Artist Statement

Painting is a battle. It is a constant exploration, a questioning of nature and the many different forms it takes around and within us. My paintings are internal landscapes exploring the fragility and strength of the human state. Each day is a journey; I am looking, searching for relationships, situations and objects that intrigue me. It could be a shadow, rock pools, a kiss, an argument, light falling on a flower, a letter or a memory. It is the essence and discovery of these moments that inspires me. In order to paint I have to evoke parts of myself usually hidden away. The only way for me to do this is through my response to music. It allows me to express sensitive perceptions from past and present through the light and dark of human emotion. As a result these paintings are honest, challenging, intuitive, celebratory and, most importantly, they are straight from the heart.

Between Shadows is a brave and ambitious collection of work created by Juliette Paull between 2008 and 2009. Paull was selected by previous Director of David Faloconer, in early 2008 to be the recipient of a substantial bursary from an anonymous benefactor and supporter of the gallery. The aim of the bursary was to enable an emergent artist to create a launching body of work for exhibition.

Julliette Paull’s journey as an artist seems to me to be unusual amongst her peers, in that she follows and expands upon a tradition of intuitive expressive painting. Exploring the unspoken, whilst so many of her contemporaries seem to remain focused on the spoken contextualisation of their subject. As such I am pleased to see an artist of this nature supported in such an extensive way.

Joseph Clarke. Gallery Director

When I first met Juliette in 2002 I was struck by a series of powerful drawings made directly from the seascape at Chapelporth. They were energetic emotional responses that echoed what it was to be stood there, in the elements, and to face up to the challenge. These drawings spoke clearly of what was to come and reflected the ambition and commitment that still remains. It was no surprise to hear that Juliette had won this accolade. It has allowed her to initiate an ambitious body of work which has helped develop and mature her visual language. Juliette has always had a clear vision of her creative journey and this has been underpinned by both a passion for drawing and for the substance of paint itself. In these new paintings I see both elements come together in perfect balance. Strong calligraphic forms float, either in stark contrast to the intensely coloured ground, or delicately emerge from the subtle pale hues. They reveal emotions once present in her direct responses to the landscape now in response to a personal inner landscape. Seeing the evolution of these paintings over a long period of time has afforded me an unusual insight into another painters’ world. I am reminded of an observation Lucian Freud made, ‘’The painter makes real to others his inner most feelings about all that he cares for. A secret becomes known to everyone who views the picture through the intensity with which it is felt.’’ These are compelling paintings with intensity and truth, and they hold many secrets for the viewer to behold.
