IndustrialIT for the Beverage IndustryThe taste of success: creating value through integrated solutions
2
Drinking Culture: Tradition and Individuality
Bottled beverages have been part ofthe world’s cultural history for centuries.Today, consumers can choose from anoverwhelming assortment of brands. But, what counts in the end isindividual taste. Each beverage takesits place based on patterns ofconsumption and its ability to satisfyindividual needs: thirst, energy, entertainment or pure pleasure.
Soft drinks, fruit juices, mineral or tablewaters, beers, champagnes, wines, liquors: customer preferences changefaster and faster. The need to reactquickly to changing market conditionsand competition is growing. ABBhas taken a new look at how manu-facturing, supply chain managementand business processes interact inregulated industries.
Our team understands the needs ofthe beverage industry because of ourlong-term partnerships with worldwidemanufacturers of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. We can drawon more than one-hundred years ofexperience with manufacturers of retail-ready, packaged, consumer brand-named products, as well as companiesthat grow and convert raw materialsinto ingredients and beverages.
The result? A tailored offering ofproducts, applications and services thatsupport the delivery of an outstandingvariety of beverage products that areconstantly transferring and evolving.
Just as individual as the consumer’schoice is the individual attention wedevote to our customer partnerships.
Fit for the future
Tough competition, tight margins, pricewars and wavering sales predictions –whoever wants to win in today’sconsumer goods industry needs notonly stamina and flexibility, but acrystal ball to predict future trends. That’s especially true in the beveragebusiness. New concepts, products andtastes are continually being developed(“light,” “energy,” “probiotic”), and allof them are competing for customers.
In addition, the industry is pressuredby strict rules and regulations for foodand beverage production, fluctuatingraw material quality, the demand forincreased productivity and capacity, and the need to cut costs.
In this business environment, it’s goodto have a strong partner. Someone withbroad-based experience and specializedknow-how; someone who keeps trackof all your business processes andactively supports your company withconsulting, planning, products andservices; someone who analyzes andindividually optimizes each step ofyour value added chain; someone whoensures, even on short notice, the bestpossible return on investment.
Our expertise begins at the level ofindividual sensors, touches every aspectof the manufacturing cycle, and thenmoves beyond to complete e-businesssolutions.

When you need better on-line access toreliable data, increased productivity, and theability to trace and track the manufacturingprocess, ABB is your source for controlproducts, systems and technologies.
Our control products and systems offermulti-tasking, multilanguage support, graphical operator interfaces, flexibleconnectivity, fast installation and easydiagnostics and programming. All essentialcomponents are designed with redundancy. If one component fails, the redundant partnerimmediately takes over with no interruptionof your operations. Optionally, ABB safetysystems can be integrated.
Improve productivity, reduce costs
When you need to increase the actual output, speeding up the time-to-market of new softor alcoholic drinks, or new packaging designs,a higher level of automation is required.Traditional and manual manufacturingprocesses can be complemented, or replacedby automation.
Every control product we build delivers:
• Ease of use and maintenance• Scalability and expandability• Seamless integration with existing systems
and package units• Electronic recording and signatures• Integrated batch control and management
Progress happens in real-time
Whenever you need real-time automation, our human machine interface helps youroperators monitor and control themanufacturing or process sequences ...stand-alone, with existing PLCs, or integratedas a distributed control system.
Product and quality information is deployedrapidly and uniformly, so that personnelthroughout your plant view your process andbusiness through the same real-time “window.”Better information means faster decision-making and more control over assets andthe manufactured product.
Relevant information at your fingertips
One click with the right-hand mouse buttonbrings you further information about a signal,a mixing motor or a plant component (in otherwords an object). This information, (theaspect), is connected to the object. ABB’s“aspects” or additional information include:
• Graphic displays with real-time datafrom your process
• Faceplates to operate and control the tags, and I/O points
• Pre-configured trend and group displays• Alarm and event displays• Trend, alarm and event history• Reports
7
Manufacturing and Process Control: flexibility and re-usability
You control it
For discrete or process automation, IEC 61131-3programmable controllers range from small, compact units to powerful controllers withsizable memory and speed.
The controllers offer the ability to interface tothousands of local or remote I/O points. Theyare communicative by supporting, for example, the IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), PROFIBUS,FOUNDATION Fieldbus, HART, and severalRS 232C protocols, as well as OPC standards.
Processor units, power supplies, communica-tion modules and process inputs and outputscan be set up for redundancy.
Save costs for wiring
The control unit works with various fieldbustypes. This option allows device access fromthe control room and saves the costs forseparate service bus wiring. A right mouse clickoffers the following device views:
• Online parameterization• Diagnosis• Signal forcing• Electronic registration of changes
(audit trail)
Engineering
Should you require re-usable information –either in the context of a project or aslibrary solutions – you can create objectsand aspects that can be used again andagain. These objects contain elements suchas process control programs, various usergraphics and dialogs, or pre-defined reportsand documents.
Our suite of engineering tools integratesfunctions for offline configuration and onlinecommissioning in just one tool. All data – thefunctional blocks used for the control logicand all variables – are stored in a system-wide,global database.
Manage your assets
Maintenance conditions vary from simplyidentifying status changes in an intelligentdevice or identifying high, low, or deviationlimit conditions in the control system,to identifying abnormal conditions usingadvanced process equipment condition.Asset monitors use real-time plant informationas inputs to:
• Detect maintenance conditionsbefore failure occurs
• Assist in diagnosis of the problem• Automatically offer correction
recommendations• Update the CMMS system

Current regulations focus on quality andtraceability. Beverage manufactures areasked to trace and archive all relevantproduct data for the complete manufacturingprocess, and be able to retrieve informationmonths or years later:
• What ingredients were used? What wasthe origin of the ingredients, how werethey controlled and identified duringthe manufacturing process?
• What personnel were engaged with themanufacturing process? Responsibilities?
• What were the key product andmanufacturing data for special orders, vintages, batches, lots or campaigns?
All of these are recorded automatically in thatthe Information Manager collects, stores andretrieves historical manufacturing, process orbatch, and business data from ABB or othersystems. Standards such as ODBC, OLE DBand SQL provide access to all real-timeand historical data, regardless of where itresides in the process or business network.
Learn from your history
Integrated with ABB’s automation system, the Information Manager combines theManufacturing Execution or ProductionInformation Management System (MES/PIMS)environment with the control environment. When you need to compare real-time signals

and status, alarm and events, with historyor previous reports, the relevant history isavailable with a single mouse click.
Whenever you want to repeat your “goldenBatch,” the trend displays create a batch-to-batch comparison that improves both qualityand reproducibility.
Reporting made easy
Regularly scheduled reports, as well as ad hocreports can be generated easily in the formatyou specify. Reports can be created in thefamiliar Microsoft Windows® desktopenvironment using Excel or Crystal ReportsTM.The Information Manager includes add-ins sothat these office packages have access to real-time, historical and production data. Generatedreports can be automatically e-mailed, printed, saved to a file, and archived.
Capture better informationfor better decision making
With manufacturing facilities spanning theworld, managers must be able to analyze andview information from multiple sites. TheInformation Manager presents data in the formof graphical displays, trend displays and webpages so that it is readily accessible from amanager’s desktop or laptop PC regardless oflocation. The production manager can on hisPC have a simple KPI continuously providedto him as a displayed value or a ticker barfrom which he can drill down for moredetailed information should this KPI change.
