Friday 10th March 2017WORLD BOOK DAY

In celebration of World Book Day this year, the Red Ties cohort met Marcus Alexander, author of the fantasy series Keeper of the Realms. He spoke to them about how travel and his love of high adrenaline sports had helped inspire him to write books.

All pupils were given a £1 book token which can be exchanged at bookshops for World Book day books or put towards the cost of other books. Various quizzes with a book theme were organised both in the library and for tutor time.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAYStaff and students have been celebrating International Women’s Day. Sixth Form girls were invited to attend a special event at Burntwood Academy organised by Tooting MP Dr Rosena Allin-Khan. British Judo star Nekoda Davis, who competed in the Rio Olympics, spoke to the audience about the women that had encouraged and supported her. Her advice was: “Don’t be afraid to stand out from the crowd.” The girls also took part in a brainstorming session to come up with ideas of how to make positive changes.

Back in college, tutor groups took part in a quiz that highlighted the amazing achievements of some famous women through history. At lunchtime staff & students held a Panel Discussion which posed the question ‘What it means to be a man’. The aim of the day was to encourage all the boys in college to think about women including their mothers, sisters, teachers and friends and how they support them in living their lives.

STEM TRIPA group of students in Years 9 & 10 took part in a STEM activity day at Kingston University. The visit has come about as a result of the college gaining STEM Assured status and working to build stronger links with universities and employers.

MATHS FESTSixth Form mathematicians attended Maths Fest, a day for students to celebrate and be inspired by mathematics. They listened to talks by prominent mathematicians including Simon Singh & Matt Parker.

SURGICAL SKILLS WORKSHOPA group of Sixth Formers and Year 11 students visited the Hunterian Museum and took part in a surgical skills workshop. When we first arrived we were shown videos of a live surgery. The session was led by a Junior Doctor which was very helpful as we were able to ask questions about the procedures and gain a deeper understanding of what was going on.

The highlight of the day was being able to have a go at suturing and we tried out our skills on actual cuts on fake limbs. We also had time at the end to look around the museum and see the various specimens of various organisms on display.By Nidarsan Ravikumar 12AMA & Nicholas Mbabazi 12IXM

CERN PHYSICS TRIPWe flew to Geneva on the 22nd February and had a chance to explore the area around our hotel and the river at night. On the next morning we visited the United Nations building and saw two rooms: one of which had a colourful ceiling on the new wing of the United Nation HQ which was renovated by Spain as a gift to the UN. In the afternoon we went to CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, where physicists and engineers probe the fundamental structure of the universe. We were given a detailed history of CERN and explanation of the standard model in physics which predicted the presence of quarks & leptons. We had a tour of the ATLAS facility, one of two general purpose detectors on the Large Hadron Collider which is looking for the presence of Dark Matter and the Higgs Boson.

On the final day, we travelled back to CERN to visit the Universe of Particles, an interactive display which featured parts used on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). After revisiting the gift shop at CERN, we travelled to the Natural History Museum where we saw a variety of animals on display. Then it was time to head back to the airport and return to London. Overall, the trip was very helpful and gave students a detailed insight into the inner workings of particle accelerators and detectors such ATLAS, ALICE and CMS at CERN. I would like to thank Mr Dennett and Ms Davidson who gave students this opportunity to visit CERN and other attractions around Geneva. Rovin Perez 13JRD

RUGBYA selection of Year 7,8 & 9 boys had a chance to watch a Harlequins first team training session when they visited Surrey Sports Park ground in Guildford on the 7th March.Gino Bryan 7AO said: “It was fantastic to see behind the scenes at a professional rugby club; we didn't realise how much goes into making the players the best they can be! It was an amazing day out.”

The Red Tie team played Kingsdale Foundation school and won 5-0 in a strongly contested game in poor conditions. The match’s only try was scored by Shahryar Kahn 7CP when he came on in the second half; it was only Shahryar’s second game of rugby ever.Over the next two weeks the Year 8 & 9 teams will play their remaining fixtures in the South London Emerging Schools League. TABLE TENNIS TEAMS MAKE NATIONALSThe U13 and U16 boys table tennis teams from Ernest Bevin have won in the Regional Finals of the English Schools Table Tennis Association (ESTTA) Butterfly School Team Championships, placing them in the top 4 table tennis school teams in the country.

After a wobbly start with 3 losses, the U16 boys showed true grit and determination as they managed to turn the game around and come out as winners. Their win provided inspiration for the U13 boys, who played the following day winning an astounding 3 out of 3 matches. This is a fantastic achievement for the Ernest Bevin table tennis teams, who will go on to represent their school and Greenhouse Sports at the ESTTA National Finals at the end of March. Coach Renan

VOLLEYBALLOn Saturday 25th February Matthew, Jake & Rayyan woke up super early to attend national camp trials in Kettering. At the same venue the National cadet and junior boys squads were put through their paces at the weekend camp which included; Freddie, Dan, Ali & Ruben in the juniors and Visman, Christian I, Christian M & Nasir in the cadets. Then on Sunday 26th February we hosted the third match of the London U15s Grand Prix at Ernest Bevin College with 12 teams in attendance. In the end the EBC yellow tie team claimed first place after defeating Lycee Francais in a very close final.

And... after this the juniors had a London League fixture against Dynasty which they eventually lost 3-1. Coach Ashley

YEAR 9 RUGBYClearly inspired by their day out to watch Harlequins first team train, the Purple Ties produced some of the best rugby from an EBC side & beat a Fulham Boys team who had some very talented individual players. EBC dominated the territory playing the majority of the game in the opposition’s half. On two occasions our players were held up over the line and failed to score. The breakthrough came from Ishaq Uddin 9CW picking up from a scrum and dived over. Fulham Boys then took a 12 – 5 lead with two tries against the run of play. Just before half time Pharrell Emakpor 9SAA scored to level the game. The second half was all Ernest Bevin, Joshua Andrews 9EG used his pace and dived over in the corner. In a physical contest the boys kept their heads and where rewarded when Abdu-Noor Shalem 9SAA stole the ball off an opponent and crossed the line to secure the win. Joshua Gomes 9EG and Christian Ocloo-Momori 9SAA were immense in the forwards, and Pharrell and Tachengetwa Masanga 9JDB controlled the backs. All the players should be proud of their contribution.
