Have you evernoticed—andconsideredthe signifi-cance of—

the Hebrew letters “kufkuf” inscribed before thename of our synagogue

on our building exterior to the right of ourentrance? Those two simple Hebrew lettersare an acronym for kehillah kedoshah, or“holy congregation.” They constitute thelongstanding honorific prefix to the formalnames of traditional synagogues. That time-honored label is eminently suitable for OrZarua—we are indeed a sacred community.

Historically, the appellation kehillahkedoshah was employed by AshkenazicJewry in Eastern Europe to refer to theJewish community as a whole, becauseeach community of Jews did not representmerely an ethnic group but rather was areligious unit devoted to service of Godand betterment of the world. The dignified“holy congregation” descriptor was trans-ferred to individual synagogues as Jewishcommunities splintered and migrated toother lands. Wherever it has been used,the kehillah kedoshah label has connoteda striving towards Jewish communal unity,identity, and mission, informed by classicalJewish texts and behavioral norms.

Significantly, Jewish prayer that high-lights the theme of God’s holiness—suchas the kaddish and kedushah—must besaid by a communal minyan; individuals bythemselves cannot achieve a sufficientdimension of holiness to proclaim suchprayers declaring that God is holy.Community prayer, therefore, can attain alevel of sacredness that is unavailable toindividuals. We are more potent—andpotentially more holy—when we gathertogether in sacred community.

Judaism teaches that, through prayer,study, and human interaction, holinesscan emerge when we engage in productivecommunal experiences. A genuine andholy community is marked by a compellingsense of belonging, caring, and purpose,in which community members care deeplyabout each other and the fate of their

community. Or Zarua is such a community.Or Zarua—as an intimate haven of

Torah, avodah (worship), and gemiluthasadim (acts of lovingkindness)—canbecome a refuge in a large city from thechallenging and competitive world outsideour walls. Inside our building, we can discover wisdom and warmth, and fosterdeep connections with those who share acommitment to the values that animateour institution. Or Zarua is an extendedsanctuary in which we together createpockets of holy time and space.

At Or Zarua, we create holy experienceson a daily and weekly basis. From a spiritedPurim celebration spanning the generationsto sophisticated learning about foundationaltexts and practices before and during Pesah,from energetic youth programs to passion-ate adult education, and at shiva minyanimpacked with Or Zarua Congregants, we havecreated moments of holiness both fleetingand enduring. Those holy moments may beonly sporadic, but they generate energy andinspiration that are lasting.

But creating—and maintaining—akehillah kedoshah at Or Zarua is no easymatter. It takes much effort, commitment,and financial support, from many people invarying contexts. Sustaining a holy commu-nity requires one individual after the nextdedicated to a valuable cause. At Or Zarua,we need not all have the same interests,but we each must seek ways to contribute.When we join in holy community, we are farmore than the sum of our parts.

And holy communities should periodi-cally gather to celebrate what they have builttogether and what they will achieve in thefuture. Come celebrate with us at ourupcoming gala, at which we will experiencepride in our one-of-a-kind synagogue, as wellas raise funds required to facilitate all thewonderful services and programs that are soimportant to our community. Or Zarua needsand values—and deserves—your enthusias-tic participation and generous support.

Two thousand years ago, Hillel theElder said: “Al tifrosh min ha-tzibur”—don’tdistance yourself from the community(Pirkei Avot 2:5). That timeless wisdom isstill true and relevant.

We Are PreparedOZ Congregants and staff trained in CPR and AED skills

Members of the Or Zaruacommunity have beentrained to use an automatedexternal defibrillator (AED)and perform CPR. OZ main-

tains three AEDs in the building as requiredby New York State law. An AED is locatedin the back vestibule of the building onthe first (social hall), second (sanctuary),and sixth (Hebrew school) floors.

Emergency Skills, Inc. provides thetraining according to standards set by theAmerican Heart Association. Each trainedperson must be re-certified every two years.Our trained members are able to deal withsituations in which a person is not breath-ing, is choking, or is having a heart attack,

and to use the AED, when necessary. Onlythose specifically trained and certified inits use should operate an AED.

The members of our synagogue community who are trained are AnthonyBanfield, Ellen Hawa, Sigal Hirsch, MarciaKalin, Jonathan Kaplan, Laura Resnikoff,Lisa Schmutter, Reed Schneider, CharlesSpielholz, Deborah Wenger, and AlanYaillen. In addition to CPR and AED skills,this group can help in situations whereEMTs need to rapidly enter and exit thebuilding.

If you suspect someone is not breath-ing, is choking, or is having a heart attack,call 911 and alert one of these trainedpeople.

Modern times have seen the use of theterm Tikkun Olam for social action. Theterm originates in the Talmud and has

been repurposed. This spring, we will continue tostudy the pages that introduce the concept ofTikkun Olam. We will also learn the interestingtale of how this term has been repurposed.

Talmud class meets on most Wednesdays, as shown on the OZ calendar, in theOZ Library from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with Rabbi Bolton. Anyone may join the classat any time; previous participation is not necessary. No prior knowledge of Talmud,Hebrew, or Aramaic is required. You can also begin to build your own Jewish library byordering Volume I of Tractate Gittin (Artscroll). The Art of King David: May Teen Mini-CourseSunday, May 22, 10:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.This May, Or L’Atid will be offering a one-session mini-course incorporating an in-depth text study of Samuel I and Kingswith critical examination of art objects representing King David from different

periods and cultures which are on displayat the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Teens will study texts from Samuel Iand Kings depicting King David as a poet,shepherd, musician, warrior, author,prophet and, of course, ruler. We will alsoexplore the relationships between KingDavid and Bathsheva and King David andAvigail in order to gain insight into allsides of arguably the most famous Jewishruler in history.

During our trip to the MetropolitanMuseum of Art, we will view five objectsrepresenting King David. Together we’llattempt to understand the implications ofeach object for the time period in which itwas created.

JusticeIlluminated: The Art ofArthur Szyk,a traveling

exhibit about the lifeand distinctive art ofthe Jewish illustrator,artist, and political

satirist Arthur Szyk—called “the greatest20th-century master illuminator—is thenew presentation in the OZ Gallery. Thefeatured speaker at the exhibition’s open-ing on Sunday, May 15, is Irvin Ungar,author, curator, and president of the ArthurSzyk Society, who will give an illustratedtalk on the life and career of artist Szyk,

a Polish Jew who escaped Europe in thewake of the Holocaust and emigrated tothe U.S. in December 1940. As noted inthe exhibit, “For Szyk, the artist is a warrior: His arsenal…pens and brushes,paint and ink; His battlefield…a canvas,a sheet of paper; His enemies….injusticeand oppression.” This powerful exhibitfocuses on three main themes: World WarII and the Holocaust; America; and Jewishresponse.

Since its inaugural showing in 2002,this exhibit has toured museums, univer-sities, libraries, and cultural centersaround the world. Light refreshments willbe served.
