Key Club isn't for everyone. What I mean by this is that three-in-the-morning services, cheering your heart out at events and rallies, and pelvic thrusting isn't for everyone. There's nothing wrong with that, and no one starts off being comfortable with

all the abnormalities of Key Club. I will say this though: Key Club is what you make of it. If you have a craving to give back to the community, then there really is no better place than Key Club. As an international club, it might sound

intimidating, but your home club will become not only your friends but your family. We are truly unique from other clubs on campus, as well as all over the world, because of our spirit and love for serving. The abnormalities of Key Club will

become a normality and your embarrassment from cheering will fade and become a comfort to hear at events. There's this misconception that everyone joins Key Club purely for the sake of giving back. The truth is most members join for friends,

but what's really important is why they stayed in Key Club. What started as purely social gatherings will build your love for giving back and you'll be hooked. Like I said, Key Club isn't for everyone, but if you're looking for a place to give back to

your community, build a family on an international level, and create memories that will last a lifetime, then Key Club will open those doors for you.

Run for Homeless Childrenby Donald Huynh

Senior• • •

On March 1st, I attended the Run for

Homeless race event located in the heart of Mile Square Park. The weather had been quite rainy the

past few days so most of us knew to dress smartly in

warm clothing. Unfortunately, Kevin Nguyen was

not so lucky and ended up volunteering throughout

the event in a t-shirt and shorts. We arrived there and were put to work

unloading tables from a truck. Bolsa Grande Key

Club, Pacifica Key Club, La Quinta's Boys’ League,

and other clubs from other schools all worked

together to help set up the venue. After an hour of setting up and mingling, the racers started to come

to the event and the race coordinators began to

assign us to our positions. Our Key Club was mainly

stationed around the venue to help set up the

booths that were advertising their business. Afterwards, we went to the finish line to cheer on

the runners in the cold pouring rain as they

finished the race in intense conditions.

What I liked about the event was that there

was a DJ booth that played good, groovy music and that there were booths that were consistently

handing out all sorts of food and drinks such as

cupcakes, hot dogs, chicken sandwiches, coffee,

chips, and Gatorade. We helped ourselves and I

think everyone had a good time huddled under the tree as we cheered on the racers. Towards the end of

the event, we went throughout the course to pick up

stakes that marked how far the runner was and we

sat under a gazebo with Pacifica's Key Club where

some members got to meet their pen pals! Overall, I had a good time at the event and it was refreshing to

go back to volunteering at services with my Key

Club after a 3-month hiatus on volunteering. I

definitely plan on going to future events more often

so I can serve my community and possibly get free

food.

What an Irish holiday! On Sunday, March 16th, I attended Leprechaun Leap to get my weekly dose of Key Club. The event did not exactly occur on Saint Patrick's Day, but it was still nice to be surrounded by a green environment Sunday morning. When we first arrived at the District at Tustin, we checked in and received our volunteer t-shirts. We were not assigned any jobs at first, so we roamed the area to explore. Then, we were gathered back at the volunteer tent to be placed on the race course. After waiting for the truck to come, we were told that we were no longer needed in that area, so we looked for a job to do. Therefore, we joined other clubs at the water and food stations at the finish line. Although we did not do much at the beginning of the event, I was glad to leave the area, knowing that we were productive.

O n M a r c h 1 s t , I volunteered for the OC Food Bank. I expected everyone to be packaging canned goods, but I was in for a surprise. We were assigned to package pears and avocados. We were set up in an assembly l ine. The people assigned to the front of the line had to put pears in the bag, the people in the middle put the avocados in the bag, and finally, the people at the end tied the bag together. I was at the avocado section and it was pretty easy at first, but as time passed by, I got tired. All of us had to bend over to pick up all the avocados at the bottom of the bins, so our backs hurt by the end of the event. We were in a race against time during this event because we had a specific amount of bags to make before the clock struck 10 A.M. I was proud to say that our assembly line was the first to finish. All in all, this was a pretty fun event and I would be happy to volunteer again.

Heart Walkby Jackie Nguyen

Junior• • •

On Saturday morning of March 8th, Key Clubbers woke up at 3:30 to make an early call time of 4:30 A.M. for the Heart Walk service at the Angel Stadium. Upon arrival, members were already freezing and were grateful to get started right away. We were lucky to stay together as a club and be assigned to the Kids’ Zone where we all took responsibilities at different booths. Mimi, Vyvien and I were in charge of the arts and crafts booth. We set up for an hour and waited for instructions. Once it hit daylight, children and their parents came pouring in and the Kids’ Zone quickly became busy. We supervised as the kids sat down to express their artistic skills! Towards the end of the event, our replacements arrived and we were free to leave after a long morning of service. Even though waking up that early for a service can be tiring, it is always worth it to dedicate your time to a good cause.

Into the Wild Run 5Kby Jenny Cao

Junior• • •

On March 22, 2014, I went to the Into the Wild Run event. As one would expect, nature was the central theme to the race. The setting was a dirt trail path winding through a dense forest, rocky terrain and over hills. I was assigned to Aid Station 4, where I was given the general task of passing out water and Gatorade to any runner that came by. My responsibility was to pour the drinks into plastic cups. We had music blasting in our phones to keep our minds occupied as we set off to fulfill our duties. There were fruit snacks, nuts, and pretzel sticks laid out for any passerby. The other volunteers and I also took some for ourselves. Not a lot of people had participated in the run itself, so for most of our time there, we simply had to remain under the tent. I thoroughly appreciate the food, shade, and the grand opportunity of getting to cooperate with other Key Clubbers.

It has been a marvelous second year as your Key Club adviser. I can not be more proud to witness the dedication and commitment in each and every one of you. For this term, your club has had more service events, more hours, and definitely more spirits. Despite all the obstacles that came along to hinder your ability to serve your home, school, and community, your club has grown stronger and you are more determined than ever before. Some of the highlights of this year include our brand-new K-Kids program at Cook Elementary School and our generous donation of $1000 to the UNICEF Foundation. Our numerous recognitions include the Early Bird Dues Qualification, Club of the Month (which we won twice), Officers of the Month, and Member of the Month. We won the spirit stick not just once, but twice. Oh, we feel so good! With all of that aside, what has truly touched me is you. Seeing a group of teenagers waking up at 5 A.M. to be at call time is truly admirable. Your selflessness is what makes Key Club the best club to be a part of. I thank you for all that you have done and will continue to do.

OUTGOING CLASS DIRECTOR

FACULTY ADVISOR

When I was a freshmen in Key Club, I could always remember learning about new activities and never really be able to remember anyone’s names. One thing I remember always saying to myself was "Dude, I wanna be able to do that my senior year." And now as a senior, I can say that Key Club has done me well. I've been able to go to Fall Rally for all four years and I still remember the different workshops I got to try out at the Region Training Conferences. I can't say that senior year was the best year in Key Club for me, but I can definitely say that it was the most memorable. I did everything that I told myself I had to at least try once in Key Club and by this time, I know most of the cheers by heart even if I never planned on memorizing them. Key Club was fun while it lasted!

-Tina Nguyen

Page 9: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

It is the first of April and this year's term will be ending very soon. I remember when I was one of the freshmen, writing an article on how I will miss the old board; never would I have thought that I would be a member of this board. I can't help feeling bittersweet. Although being class director did not require a significant amount of work, it showed me many leadership qualities; I was able to learn and progress with the rest of the juniors. Although I was a bit hesitant to take this position, I now know that it was the right choice. Being an officer has not only given me the opportunity to help our club function, but it has allowed me to form new bonds with the other officers as well. I know I will miss this position dearly, but I also know that it is time for others to take the responsibility. This has been a great year, and I would not change any second of it—through the last minute deadlines, early call times, and heavy duties, I learned that work is only work if you make it so. Otherwise, it is something you deeply cherish.

-Vivian Leduc

INCOMING CLASS DIRECTOR

OUTGOING CLASS DIRECTOR

During my term, I can definitely anticipate plentiful of stress because hard work comes with an officer position. I have already started to attend board meetings and let me tell you that there is a lot of dedication and effort involved to maintain a club in working order. Although the club only meets once a week on Thursdays, things do not magically come together within five minutes. There is much deposition of work prior to the meetings, but organization and communication are the simple keys to success. Therefore, staying on my game is the type of mentality I intend on maintaining constantly throughout the year. I do not like making mistakes. I know that no one is perfect, but near perfection is always possible. On a brighter note, I am still looking forward to effectively sharing and tackling my responsibilities with the upcoming officers and companions! I cannot wait to create and strengthen the bonds I will have with each individual, for I will be working closely alongside with them!

-Jennifer Hoang

Page 10: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

Reflecting upon this past year, I feel as though I have formed a newfound respect for Key Club. When I initially joined, the only things that ever concerned me were attending the events, meeting new friends, and receiving hours. However, I was given the opportunity to join the board once I became the second junior class director, alongside my partner-in-crime, Vivian. As time progressed, I started realizing how much time and work was dedicated into keeping the club afloat. With that newfound respect, I was able to serve as a class director with great pride. I find it funny how so many of you have said, “I’m sorry for asking you so many questions.” It’s actually my job to help you and I have truly loved helping all of you. Being a class director has made me realize how much I genuinely love helping others, because I know what it feels like to be too intimidated to ask questions. I made sure to always reply with a smile, just so you guys would open up to me a little bit more about any concerns or inquiries that you may have had. And so, I’m grateful for having had the opportunity to serve the junior class with Vivian, as well as form greater friendships with everyone on the board.

INCOMING CLASS DIRECTOR

OUTGOING CLASS DIRECTOR

I will be on the Key Club board as one of the two senior class directors and am really looking forward to it as this will be a new experience for me. I am anticipating a better year in Key Club. Key Club is great but I think it can be better! My goals for this next year is to be more involved than I already am as well as get the senior class involved as well. I know many are going to get hit by senioritis and find it difficult to go to events but I am here to try and prevent that. Either way, I don’t believe it will be that big of an issue as I believe that the Class of 2015 is a very energetic and active group. I hope that we can attract more members and get the people in the club to mingle and get to know each other while helping out their community. I am looking forward to gaining more experiences and memories with my fellow memories as we continuously volunteer to go to events. My main goal for this upcoming year is to make Key Club fun for all the members with the help of the board!

-Robert Ramirez

Page 11: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

Serving the club as an officer this year has helped me grow as an individual and leader. It is such a blessing for me to have been able to work with and get to know more about the other inspiring leaders of the club. There was nothing better for me than to wake up and volunteer at a community service with people that share the same passion for Key Club as me. When I was first notified that I was the class director, I felt a rush of excitement and anticipated towards a good year. And it has been more than a good year. These past twelve months have been a wonderful learning experience. The immense support that I have received from family and friends motivated me to exceed beyond my limit and through their encouragement, I was able to take a step out of my comfort zone. Not only was I able to contribute more to the club, but I got the chance to interact and grow closer to other members in and outside of my class. It was a great stepping stone for me; my love for Key Club has expanded so much more and I am motivated to serve the club that I love in all the ways I possibly can and strive to improve myself as an individual.

INCOMING CLASS DIRECTOR

OUTGOING CLASS DIRECTOR

Getting this position made me look back at all the memories I have made thanks to this club; I am so grateful for all the positive people I met over the past year. Those very same people inspired me to run for this position and make my main goal to maintain the positive and high morale that is unique to Key Club. I want to let new members experience the fun and spirited atmosphere that I personally experienced, and instill them with optimism for Key Club. My expectations for the next term is to meet many new friends and to get a better relationship with the division. Last year I didn’t have much enthusiasm for divisional events, but things have changed. Working with the board and meeting other schools’ Key Clubs will boost my chances for getting a better impression of the division. I also am very excited for our socials now, since I love going “behind the scenes”, and seeing how everything is planned. Hopefully, I get to decorate Jacquelyn’s house for our Christmas social! Lastly, I just wish we’ll have a amazing and fun year, that would be just as memorable as last year!

-Thien Pham

Page 12: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

Key Club has been such an amazing experience for me lately. I have been the class director for the freshman class and learned many things, whether it be about life or maintaining a club. I put my efforts into this club, but I also realized that I did not put enough. I was distracted with my sports and academic work and did not always put Key Club first. Although I did not always stay on track, my friends on the board helped me and assisted me to become a better person overall with all of their help. Key Club has helped me in life because of everything it taught me to become. To be brave, courageous, strong, and independent. I learned so much from this club that will affect my life in the long run and I know that this club will benefit me for the better.

-Thomas Nguyen

INCOMING CLASS DIRECTOR

OUTGOING CLASS DIRECTOR

I as the future sophomore class director am proud to lead and be responsible for a position in Key Club. Ever since I first interviewed to be a part of the club, I’ve always thought about having a position to be an officer. When I was elected to be a part of the board, I was gladly appreciative to be more involved with the club. Although I was the only one who ran for the position, I believe that every member that is not only in my class, are leaders in their own way. My short-term goal for my class to accomplish by the end of my term as a sophomore class director is for everyone to put more of their time into our club and end the year with the limit of 40 hours of completing services. Every community service, meeting, and other activities all happen with the participation and attendance of all the members and officers.

Page 13: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

My term is coming towards an end as BGKC’s first K-Kids coordinator. It is difficult to start something from scratch. Mr. Tonthat told me that there will always be troubles along the way and that is where I will learn and improve. The first day of the K-Kids program was nerve racking. However, as time progressed, the program improved and more Key Club volunteers were eager to sign up and assist me. Soon, the K-Kids program will be going to a retirement center to pass out food boxes to the elderly. K-Kids has greatly improved me as a person through more public speaking and being a role model for the kids. I still have problems within the K-Kids program, but there is only room for improvement. Jessica Lu, the next K-Kids coordinator and my successor, will be taking over soon. Without a doubt, junior year has made being an officer increasingly more difficult than what it already is. These are tough times, but I seek solace in the K-Kids program, friends, and co-conspirators. We make small differences in each other's lives and I dream that someday I can make real progress.

INCOMING K-KIDS COORDINATOR

OUTGOING K-KIDS COORDINATOR

On April 2nd, I volunteered to get a chance of becoming project chair. The event that I was in charge of was helping out with the track meet, which was right after school. Once the bell rang, I just quickly ran over to the track in order to make it before call time. I will have to admit that my first time as project chair was a struggle. I was not prepared with my supplies to keep track of the attendees. To find a way to mark the the attendees’ availability and hours, I had to use my planner to quickly jot it all down. Although I was not prepared, I will let this become a lesson to me. Since I am currently still an elect, my flaws will surely come into action. As the event’s PC (also known as project chair), I had to take on responsibility and and become a good member in standing. the members who volunteered had really relied on me, so therefore it was a totally new experience for me. With a minor flaw, I was glad that in the end everything went smoothly!

These thirteen months as Bolsa Grande Key Club’s tech editor have been a truly unique experience for me. I traded in the small price of my time and hard work for countless opportunities to serve and lead over 100 high school students just like me. Reading hundreds of articles has made me realize how life-changing Key Club can be, taking photos at events has allowed me to document the wonderful experiences Key Club has provided, and creating newsletters has given me a chance to let my voice, and many others’, be heard. If anything, this esteemed position has strengthened my love for Key Club. I hope that my successor, Vyvien Pham, will be able to enjoy the same things I did with this position. I ask that she always keep in mind that she is here to serve our club--our members--and to always remind herself why she wanted to be tech editor. The experiences she will face are more than worth the dedication, commitment, and hard work she is to put in.

INCOMING TECHNOLOGY EDITOR

OUTGOING TECHNOLOGY EDITOR

Key Club has taught me many things. It taught me how to become a better individual and step up for the community and not just for myself. I enjoy attending service events and learning different ways to better for my community and nation. I recently have received the position as Tech Editor for Bolsa Grande Key Club of 2014-2015. I am honored to earn this opportunity and prove to many how I have grown as a member. With my dedication, responsibility and optimism, I will provide all that I've earned and achieved and help members grow their passion for Key Club the way I did. As a tech editor, I will always keep the cub's online website up-to-date, provide the club with monthly newsletters, capture memories of the members hard work during services, and most importantly, guide the members throughout their journey in Key Club. I'm looking forward to this opportunity and excited for the new term to begin!

--Vyvien Pham

Last year was my first year attending Bolsa Grande High School. I had never attended an American high school and never knew school could offer so many clubs and activities. I took the initiative to join Key Club and luckily made it in. This decision was, in a way, life changing. I started the position as treasurer last year with no knowledge about it at all. Through the year, I was able to attain new leadership and organization skills. I didn't know what to expect when Duy first nominated me as treasurer, I did not know anything from this position but to be honest, I am very happy to have accepted this nomination. I have gained so much knowledge that I will utilize in my later years. I have discovered a passion for community service and to help others. I have met wonderful people and lifetime friends. I could not thank this club and organization enough. They have made my two last years of high school worthwhile. They have made me grow and mature as a person, which is what I am most thankful for.

INCOMING TREASURER

OUTGOING TREASURER

As the upcoming treasurer elect, I’m anticipating several attainable goals to come. What I personally want to give to Key Club is the money that we need. In today’s society, money is a key factor to everything; therefore, I want our club to have the money that we need in order to do the things that we need to accomplish. In doing so, we’ll be able to give back to the community, such as saving a mother and child from tetanus. In order to reach this goal, I plan on fundraising and having a “goal” for each time we fundraise. Reaching our goal may even benefit us by earning our club a badge to put on our Key Club flag! Perhaps we can host a fundraiser each month at places outside of school, like Wal-Mart, Target, or even the mall! If we end up having more money than we were expecting, we can decrease the price of DCON. With these goals in mind for the next term, I’m sure we won’t run into financial problems!

--Joann Vuong

Page 16: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

When I first joined Key Club, I had absolutely no idea what I signed up for. I thought it was just a regular community service club; and to be completely honest, I only wanted to look good on my college application. I did not expect to be so affected by this club. However, thanks to it and its members, I am no longer that obnoxiously rude, loud mouth that I was before. I have matured and grown to be a better person. I learned to be kind to others, to be helpful without asking for anything in return, and to be spirited. I also learned to love waking up early in the morning, cheering for others, and meeting complete strangers. I learned to believe in my own capabilities and to strive for whatever I want. It makes me sad to know that this is my final year as a Key Clubber. Everything feels so bittersweet and a part of me is reluctant to let it go. If I had the chance to experience this club all over again, without a doubt, I would. Maybe a little differently, but I would do it again nonetheless.

INCOMING SECRETARY

OUTGOING SECRETARY

It felt surreal when I found out that I was elected as the next Key Club secretary for the school year of 2014-2015. Understanding that it will require a lot of work and dedication, I will try my best to fulfill the duties of a secretary to the best of my abilities. I know that with the transition from a board officer to an executive board officer comes greater responsibilities, and I am grateful and thankful that the club members believed and supported me. I am excited and anticipating towards all the wonderful memories that will be made along the year and the lessons that will help me grow as a leader and a person. With many inspiring individuals becoming a part of the upcoming board, I know that this upcoming term will be successful. I am delighted to have the opportunity to serve the club and the community with them and to obtain knowledge from them.

--Gianhu Nguyen

Page 17: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

This term has brought many new smiling faces, more interesting services, and a new family bond. Bolsa Grande Key Club has had many accomplishments: 2 Club of the Month awards, 2 spirit sticks, Most Articles at every DCM, Diamond Distinguished level, 1K Club from raising over $1000 for UNICEF, and much more. It has been a pleasure serving 120 amazing individuals who have all helped me grow as a leader and as a person. The members are what inspire me to keep doing my job, for if I slack off, the members will be greatly impacted as well. Junior year has been busy with the heavy load of AP classes and extracurricular activities; therefore, I have not been as active of a member as I would like to be. Without a doubt, juggling my life and all of its components has been challenging, but that does not mean that I think of Key Club as a burden. As a matter of fact, Key Club relieves my stress more than it induces stress. Being vice president is not all about fun and games, but the members make it all worthwhile.

-Jenny Nguyen

INCOMING VICE PRESIDENT

OUTGOING VICE PRESIDENT

Vice president. I still haven’t gotten used to that title yet. A huge part of me still thinks I’m the tech editor. And yet another part of me already knows what I will love about this job most: giving people the opportunity to serve their home, school, and community through volunteer events. I am also very excited for this coming year, as I hope more members from our club will be able to attend K-Kids, Kiwanis meetings, Fall Rally, DCON, and DCMs. One of my goals this year is to encourage our club to reach out to the other branches of our Kiwanis family and attend more division events with Division 4 North. On the other hand, I will also strive to make our home club more united; we can accomplish that through attending more services and socials together. I plan to go above and beyond efficient as a vice president, so that by the time I have finished my term, I will have inspired many others to become leaders who will take over in guiding our club to success.

Page 18: BGKC March 2014 Newsletter

This whole year of Key Club has been one of the most special to me of all four years. I was graciously offered the chance to serve as president, and it's definitely been a roller coaster ride. I've reached some of the goals I set for myself in the beginning of my term as well as failed to achieve others. I was not a perfect president, and I regret some of the decisions I made during my term. Nonetheless, I don't regret serving. I hope that even through my failures and trials of this year in Key Club, to have helped at least one person realize their true abilities. I hope everyone serves in Key Club with enthusiasm and joy, because service is what you make of it. I'm so grateful to have been a part of something so much bigger than myself. It's been quite a journey, and I'll never forget being in Bolsa Grande's Key Club.

I am still awestruck to accept the fact that I will serve Bolsa Grande Key Club as its president for the 2014-2015 term. For the following term, I have nothing but positive changes to improve the club. Some of my goals for next year include increased communication within the club and the board; increased organization and timeliness; more DCM attendance; more fundraisers for PTP (Pediatric Trauma Program), Project Eliminate, UNICEF, and the club in general; more spirit; and much more! I want the members to think of Key Club as a second family and to know that the true purpose of community service is the act of giving, not the hours that it provides. Also, I hope to educate the members more about Key Club and to improve our relationships with our Kiwanis and our K-Kids. Key Club is one of the most prestigious clubs on campus, so it's our time to shine and prove to everyone that volunteers can work and have fun, too!

To my readers:

Thank you so much for keeping up with these newsletters during this past year. There was a time during my term when I thought no one read these newsletters, and I had started to feel useless--what was the point in making newsletters if no one read them? Alas, I was proved wrong.

My goal in making these newsletters was always to focus on our members. I don’t think Key Clubbers get enough recognition for everything they do. Yes, we have Member of the Month and end-of-the-year awards, but that’s not enough. Through newsletters, I am able to shine the spotlight on members through photos, articles, or any little blurbs. I am truly grateful for being able to accomplish this goal.

So to those of you who have stuck by me and read these newsletters--even if you just skimmed through: Thank you. I hope you have enjoyed reading articles, understood all of my puns, and found amusement in the derpy photos I have shown.
