THE UNIVERSITY

Bowling Green State University is an intergral part of the system of higher

education maintained by the State of Ohio. It is governed by a Board of Trustees

appointed by the Governor and is supported almost entirely by legislative appro-

priations .

A 1910 General Assembly Act authorized an appointed commission to seek a

site in northwestern Ohio for a new normal school. Bowling Green was selected

and trustees were appointed in 1911 with the first president elected in 1912.

The college known as Bowling Green Normal College opened in temporary

quarters in September 1914, and one year later moved into two new buildings on

the present campus.

In 1929 the General Assembly changed the name to Bowling Green State College.

The present name was authorized by the 1925 assembly.

The university is composed of four main divisions: College of Education,

College of Liberal Arts, College of Business Administration and the Graduate

School. Courses are offered in forty-three different departments, and the school

is recognized by all recognized accrediting agencies.

The university is located on a tract of 240 acres in the northeastern part

of Bowling Green, Over fifty campus buildings are available for this year.

The city of Bowling Green with a population of 7,800 is located 25 miles

south of Toledo at the intersection of U.S. Routes 25 and 6. The New York

Central Railroad, a branch of the Baltimore and Ohio and Greyhound bus lines,

serve the city.

The university is co-educational with a 1952 spring enrollment of 3*223?!*

The breakdown shows 1,773 men and 1,450 women. The anticipated enrollment for

1952.53 is 3,100. The highest pre-war enrollment was 1,601.

THE COACH

Robert Kc (Bob) Whittaker is one of Ohio's most successful

football coaches both as a scholastic and collegiate mentor,

Ilhittaker is starting his twenty-fourth year as a coach with

the beginning of the 1952 season. Twenty-three years he has served as

a head coach, only in his first year in the profession did he work as

an assistant,,

Coming out of college in 1929, Bob signed to aid Jim Nicholson

in footballand track at Sandusky, Ohio high school, Nicholson left the

next year for University of Toledo and the young Miami star took

over and started his climb up football's ladder of success by quickly

raising the Blue Streaks to a gridiron power.

From 1932 to 1936 the Streaks won 33 consecutive games—five

more than amassed at liassillon by the popular Paul Brown, The 1931*

1933, 1934, 1935 and 1938 teams were undefeated. He developed such

later Ohio State stars as Charles Maag, Edward Bruckner and Leonard

Thorn, His 11-year record as the Streaks' chief man reads—87

victories, 20 defeats and 2 ties.

Meanwhile, Frank J, Prout, the progressive Sandusky superinten-

dent of schools, moved to Bowling Green as president, In 1941 a

reorganization in the athletic department called for a new head

football coacha Whittaker was induced to leave the fine Sandusky

setup and take over the Falcons.

In his initial season, the Falcons chalked up one of the best

records in the state with seven victories against one defeat and a tie,

At the end of the season Ilhittaker was nominated as an Ohio candidate

for the "Coach of the Year11 award.

Page 7: BGSU Football Media Guide 1952

During the four war years Bob kept football alive in BG ,

often piecing together teams composed of Navy V-12 men and civilians

but always managed a winning season. In the six year post war period,

the 1948 season was the most successful as the Falcons were unbeaten,

A 13-all tie with John Carroll was the only mar on the slate. The

1950 season was the most dismal with only three wins, four losses and

a pair of ties. Last year VJhittaker took an inexperienced team to

a 4-4-1 mark, Whittaker's 11-yoar coaching mark at BG reads—56 wins,

33 losses and 7 ties for an overall coaching mark of 143 victories,

53 losses and 9 ties for a most respectable .716 average.

Born in Greenville, Ohio, Bob attended high school at Lorain

and Norwalk, taking part in four years of football. At Miami University

he played halfback where his teammate was Paul Brown, the Cleveland

Browns' coach and general manager, Whittaker also took prt in track

at the Oxford school, running the dashes and throwing the javelin to

a college record.

He was graduated from Miami with a degree of bachelor of

science in education. Bob took graduate work at Ohio State but

received his MA from Bowling Green in 1942,

KICKOFFS AND POINTS AFTER

Bob Wb.ittaker's Modified T-formation

The running attack, featuring quick opening line plays, off tackle smashes and end sweeps, will be led by fullback Fred Durig, the nation's third ranking collegiate ball carrier last fall, veteran halfback Bobby Gwin'and newcomers Roger McKenzie and Glenn Freimark.

Sophomore Bill Lyons will be the chief passer withaiy needed help from another capable sophomore Jerry Barner. They will have excellent targets in 6-5 Jim Ladd, 6^4 Phil White and Walter Wagner.

Sophomore Bill Bradshaw shows the best booting ability with letterman Dick Cain and Jerry Barner»

Sophomore Harold Yawberg, a left-r footed performer, will handle both of these'jobs with Paul Scheig and Bob Dallas in reserve.

1952 PROSPECTS

Bob Whittaker starts his 12th season at BG much better fortified

with experienced material than a year ago. The 1951 season concluded

with four wins, four defeats and a tie, and the Falcons were improving

with great strides as the season expired,

Whittaker hopes he can pick up where he left off last November with

17 lettermen as the nucelus along with 19 junior varsity performers.

The Falcons will feel the loss of two of last year's fine blockers—

end Gene Aldridge and halfback Dick Pont, Pont was also the second best

ground gainer. They were two mainstays that helped all-Ohio fullback

Fred Durig set a new rushing mark of 1,444 yards for second place honors

in the nation's small college division.

Depth again, as always, will be Whittaker's big problem with injuries

to key men a big factor in the success of the 1952 season.

The BG backfield situation has a promising look. Along with Durig,

who is a cinch at fullback, veteran halfback Bob Gwin is back at the left

half post.

At quarterback Whittaker will miss the services of Rex Simonds and

will have to turn the job over to inexperienced sophomores Bill Lyons and

Jerry Earner, Both saw little action with the varsity last season, Tommmy

Thomas will be available for the safety job and should see some offensive

action.

The replacement for Dick Pont will have to come from a junior v arsity

man. Likely candidates are Roger McKenzie, a transfer from University of

Cincinnati, and Glenn Freimark, a promising sophomore. Bill Bradshaw, who

shows plenty of punting ability, might work between the halfback jobs.

Other offensive backfield reserves will include Hugh Schick at

fullback with speedsters Ray Cimaglio and Dick Wikle also in line.

Page 11: BGSU Football Media Guide 1952

In the defensive backfield Benny Pate and John Ladd, out most of

last season with a head injury, will take over the halfback jobs* Barner

will help Thomas at safety with Bradshaw and Freimark backing up Ladd and

Pate at the important pas defense posts.

Overall the backfield will have good speed with Durig, a deceiving

power runner, Gwin and Freimark elusive speed merchants, while McKenzie can

run over or around them.

In the line Whittaker has some problems, especially at guard, Bob

Hallett has been converted from end to guard, although he might play some

dofonaive end, Paul Scheig, a veteran lineman, will alternate between

tackle and guard, getting assistance from Bob Dallas, Letterman Shelley

Lifshitz will aid the cause.

On defense Keith Fowler will take over with John Chieco and John

Cocula working into the ineup later in the season, Scheig will also

work some on the defense.

The tackle posts will find big Lloyd Farkson trying to better his

all-Ohio honorable mention honors of last year, Darrell Clay and Dick

Palguta will divide the right side job with letterman Maynard White

looking after the reserve duty.

The end position has some fine prospects in 6-5 Jim Ladd and Phil

White, both good pass receivers, and all-around performers, Dick Cain

and Walter Wagner should prove capable relief men, Cain will do some

punting.

Overall the Falcons have the potential to improve on last year's

record but facing four Mid-American Conference foes in the first year

of league participation will be a big task. The attack should be more

divided between the air and ground than last year. Pass defense might

improve some while defensively there might be some decline over last

year. The inexperience at quarterback may be costly early in the season.

PRESS, RADIO AND PHOTOGRAPHERS INFORMATION

The press box in the Bowling Green stadium, although not elaborate

or any too large, can adequately handle all working press, radio broad-

casters and authorized scouts.

Because the space is limited only press and radio men actually working

the games are requested to make application for space. Other press and

radio representatives desiring to see any or all of the Falcon games will

be furnished complimentary tickets upon request. No women will be allowed

in the press box during contests.

Applications for press and radio reservations should be made as early

as possible. Early reservations will help you and us. Those desiring wire

service should specify same in reserving space and also notify the Western

Union at your terminal. This makes a double eheck on the installation of

this service. Reservations can be made by writing, wiring or telephoning

Don Cunningham, Director of Athletic Publicity, Bowling Green State

University, Bowling Green, Ohio. Office phone is 5661 or at home residence

223| Pearl St., phone 6973.

Photographers desiring field passes should contact Mr, Cunningham in

same manner as the press, Dark room facilities will be available for those

desiring same.

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics hopes that all visiting

newsmen and radio broadcasters will feel st home when covering out? cobtests.

We stand ready to give you the best possible service while you are here,

and should you have suggestions as to how we can improve this service, we

will welcome the opportunity for you pass these thoughts on to us.
