2015 MAY REVIEW - 2015 MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Bowling Green State University men’s golf team wrapped up its 2015 spring season at the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championships hosted by Akron at the Mayfield Sand Ridge Club - Sand Ridge on May 1-3 in Chardon, Ohio. The Falcons took sixth-place overall with a 72-hole team score of 1188, the lowest 72-hole score for a BGSU team at the MAC Men’s Golf Championships since posting a team score of 1173 back in 2006-07.

Chardon, Ohio - Day one of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championship proved to be a tale of two rounds for the Falcons, as BGSU carded a first round team score of 291, yet struggled over the second round of play in the afternoon with a team score of 311 to end day one on Friday in seventh-place overall.

The Falcons shot the third lowest team round of the opening 18 holes of play with a score of 291, +3, to head into the second round of play in third-place overall on the team leaderboard. However, the day was not done, as on the second 18 holes, BGSU got off to a rough start over the first four holes and couldn’t dig its way out, shooting a second round 311, +23.

With their combined team score of 602, +26, the Falcons are in seventh-place overall heading into the weekend. BGSU is two shots up on Northern Illinois (604, +28) and four shots ahead of Akron (606, +30).

“I was very pleased with the way we came out and played in the first round. The guys came out and hit the ball well and we were finding greens. However, as we’ve done all year on days in which we play 36 holes, we struggled to keep our same mental edge and focus over the second round. When we miss hit a few shots or make a mistake, we have got to find a way to get past it and make the next shot,” commented head coach Kevin Farrell. “I am confident we will bounce back, compete and shoot some low rounds this weekend.”

With perhaps the best day overall for the Falcons, sophomore Jose Narro turned in rounds of 74, +2, and 73, +1, for a combined 36-hole score of 147, +3. After posting four birdies and nine pars over the first 18 holes, Narro followed with three birdies and 11 pars over the second round. He sits in a tie for 14th-place overall.

Senior Joe Cooper carded rounds of 74, +2, and 77, +5, to conclude day one in a tie for 22nd-place overall with his 36-hole score of 151, +7. He totaled five birdies and 20 pars overall, which included 13 straight pars over his last nine holes on the first round and the first four holes to start his second round.

Recording the lowest round of the day was Ryan Triller with a first round 70, -2 under par. The senior tallied five birdies and 10 pars over his first 18 holes of play. Yet the second round saw the Maryland native struggle throughout the round, posting only one birdie and eight pars en route to an 83, +11. With his 36-hole score of 153, +9, Triller finds himself in a tie for 28th-place overall heading into the final 36 holes of play on the weekend.

Like Triller, fellow Falcon Brett Rinker failed to duplicate his strong first round over the afternoon session, as the sophomore shot a first round 73, +1, and a second round score of 82, +10, to end the day in a tie for 37th-place with a two-round combined score of 155, +11. Rinker matched Triller’s team-best five birdies on the first round, yet carded only one birdie over his second round of play which came on his final hole of the day.

Freshman Cameron Michalak tallied back-to-back rounds of 79, +7, good enough to place in a tie for 43rd-place overall with his 36-hole score of 158, +14. Michalak had a total of five birdies over his 36 holes, with four of those birdies coming on the front nine.

Miami, who played with the Falcons all day long, posted rounds of 287 and 289 to take an early team lead with a 36-hole team score 576, even par.

Eight strokes behind Miami is Eastern Michigan (584, +8) in second-place, while Ball State (585, +9) will enter the weekend in third-place overall.

Chardon, Ohio – Sophomore Jose Narro led the Falcons with a round of 69, -3 under par, on Saturday to climb into the top-five of the leaderboard, as BGSU bounced back from a tough second round to shoot a third round 292 on day two of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Men’s Golf Championships held at The Mayfield Sand Ridge Club - Sand Ridge Campus in Chardon, Ohio.

Miami held on to the team lead with a third round 294, +6, for a tournament low team score of 870, +6, after three rounds of play. Toledo (878, +14) moved up to second-place, while Ball State (881, +17) remains in third-place overall with one round to play.

Bowling Green, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University men’s golf team has picked up a transfer from the University of South Alabama in Max Rispler (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central H.S.), announced head coach Kevin Farrell.

Rispler, who redshirted his one season at South Alabama in 2014-15, will have four years of eligibility remaining for the Falcons beginning in the fall of 2015.

“Max is a really proven junior player,” commented Coach Farrell. “He will be a great addition to our team. We are excited to have Max join our program and we think that he can make an immediate impact.”

The top-ranked player in the Class of 2014 in the state of Michigan, Rispler attended Forest Hills Central High School in Grand Rapids, Michigan where he was a two-time all-conference and an all-state golfer. In his senior season, Rispler was an individual qualifier for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Lower Peninsula Division I State Championship after tying for fourth at the Regionals with a round of 72, after earning medalist and first-place honors with a round of 72 at the District Championships. He would go on to place ninth out of 120 golfers at the 2014 State Championship. As a freshman, he posted a fourth-place finish to help lead the Rangers to the Division I State Championship.

As a junior amateur, Rispler won four tournaments and placed in the top-10 in six other events over 16 junior events in 2013. He won the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) Orlando Junior Challenge in Jan. 2013 with a 36-hole score of 145 and took first-place at the HJGT Timacuan Junior Shootout just two months later with a two-round combined score of 145. Rispler also finished first at the Junior PGA Championship Section Qualifier in Michigan with a 36-hole score of 141 (73-68) in the summer of 2013. In 2014, the Michigan native placed second at the Citrus Junior Golf Tour Callaway World Qualifier in May, finished third at the Future Collegians World Tour at Harmony Golf Preserve and fourth at the FCWT’s MetroWest event. He came in fifth-place at the FCWT event at the Red Tail Golf Course, and was sixth at both the USGA Junior Boys Qualifier in Michigan and the HJGT Major Championship at Bear Trace in 2014.

Rispler, who plans to major in business administration at BGSU, joins fellow 2015 signees Pablo Heredia (Sevilla, Spain) and local Bowling Green product Trey Walker (Bowling Green H.S) as the new additions to the Falcons’ roster come fall 2015.

2014-15 SEASON IN REVIEW

The Falcons faced a very challenging slate in 2014-15, in which BGSU played in a number of events that included top-50 nationally ranked NCAA Division I programs and individual players. As a team, BGSU recorded seven top-10 team finishes out of 12 total events. Individually, the Falcons registered 11 top-25 finishes, highlighted by Jose Narro’s win at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational in September.

In 2014-15, BGSU played against a total of 51 top-100 nationally ranked players, 22 top-50 ranked individuals and five top-25 ranked collegiate golfers throughout the year, as head coach Kevin Farrell put together a very challenging schedule.

Overall, the Falcons posted seven top-10 team finishes, which included a sixth-place finish at the 2015 MAC Men’s Golf Championships in May.

As a team, the 2014-15 Falcons posted a team stroke average of 297.81 on the season, which encompassed 12 events and a total of 36 rounds of play. Three times this season BGSU carded a low team round of 282 - first at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational, second at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic and third at the Lone Star Invitational - which is tied for the 12th lowest 18-hole team score in BGSU history since 1972-73.

BGSU also carded a team round of 286 twice at the Barona Collegiate Cup and a score of 288 over the second round of play at the Lone Star Invitational.

The Falcons also jumped into the record books this season for the lowest 36-hole team score at a two-round event, as BGSU finished with a combined score of 586 at the rain shortened Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational in April. The 586 team score is the third lowest 36-hole team score for a Falcons’ squad in a 36-hole event since 1972-73.

At the 2015 MAC Championships, BGSU as a team posted a 72-hole score of 1188 to take sixth-place overall for the second straight year. The Falcons’ tournament score of 1188 is the lowest 72-hole score for BGSU at the MAC Championships since posting a 1173 overall at the 2007 MAC Championship event.

Bowling Green posted a first round 291, which is the lowest team round for a Falcons’ squad at the conference championship event since carding a 291 at the 2011 MAC Championships and a 290 at the 2007 tournament.

Individually, sophomore Jose Narro was named to the 2015 All-MAC First Team, becoming the first Falcon to received the all-conference honor since Matt Schneider earned first team recognition in 2009. Overall, Narro became the 32nd Falcon to receive All-MAC First Team honors all-time, while his all-conference recognition in 2015 marks the third straight year in which the Falcons have had a golfer receive MAC All-Conference Team honors overall – 2013 Wes Gates (Second Team), 2014 Brett Rinker (Second Team) and 2015 Narro (First Team).

Narro finished in a tie for 10th-place overall at the 2015 MAC Championships with a 72-hole score of 291, +3, to make it three straight years in which a Falcon golfer has finished in the top-10 overall at the conference championship event - 2013 Ryan Triller (T-9th), 2014 Brett Rinker (T-5th) and 2015 Narro (T-10th).

Both Narro (Sept. 10, 2014) and Rinker (Nov. 11, 2014) were named MAC Men’s Golfer of the Week on the season, as the sophomore duo led the Falcons with season stroke averages of 73.22 and 74.39 overall on the year, respectively. Narro recorded eight sub-par rounds of play over 36 rounds on the year, including a career-low round 66 at both the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational and at the Ka’anapali Collegiate Classic which is tied for the fifth lowest 18-hole score in BGSU history since 1972-73. His season stroke average of 73.22 ranks second only to Garry Winger’s average of 72.40 in 1993-94, as the lowest stroke average in BGSU history, while he added his name to the all-time BGSU tournament medalist winners with a first-place win at the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational with a 54-hole score of 206, -7 under par.

Both Rinker and senior Ryan Triller each went on to tally three sub-par rounds overall on the season, while senior Joe Cooper posted four sub-par rounds on the year, including shooting a career-low 68 on the final round of play at the 2015 MAC Championships.

Overall, the Falcons registered 11 top-25 individual finishes and recorded 19 sub-par rounds of golf on the year with a lineup that mostly consisted of two seniors, two sophomores and a freshman.

Dear BGSU Golf Alumni and Fans,

This season was filled with lots of highs and lows. We had a lot of great tournament

rounds, but couldn’t seem to put three rounds together. The good news is that we have the

two best upperclassmen in the conference coming back next year. A lot of good players

graduate in the MAC this year and our junior class is a powerhouse. We are also really excited

for our incoming class. A few of them can really make an immediate impact. Pablo is on the

Spanish national team, which means he is one of the top-six junior players in all of Spain. His

junior amateur resume is unbelievable.

Look in the next few weeks for a separate attachment to come out for our fundraising

goals. Alums Pat McGohan, Justin Gillham, and Otto Larson have done an outstanding job

supporting the program and helping me get these big time recruits. The two major goals we

are fundraising for are - our travel budget and our salary for our assistant coach. Details will

follow in the pamphlet and our three alums will be reaching out to you by phone.

Good luck in all summer events!!
