Tour Summary

There can hardly be a greater contrast on a birding tour than this tour through Assam and the Buddhist

kingdom of Bhutan! We began our tour with an impromptu birding session in the hotel gardens, where

we located Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Indian Cuckoo, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Coppersmith Barbet,

Striated Swallow, Dusky Warbler, Striated Grassbird, Zitting

Cisticola, Common Tailorbird and Oriental Magpie-Robin before

navigating through the bustling Indian city of Guwahati. Our next

stop was a regional waste dump. It is here, among the swathes of

trash – which had been fermenting due to the pre-monsoon rains –

that we connected with the critically endangered Greater Adjutant.

Fittingly, these large grotesque stalks were found scavenging

between heaps of waste being moved by excavators in close

proximity to the main entrance. We then had the leisure of exploring

the surrounding area, which yielded Lesser Whistling Duck,

Garganey, Glossy Ibis, Grey-headed Swamphen, Black-winged Stilt,

Whiskered Tern, Great Myna, Rosy Pipit, and Citrine and White

Wagtails. After our visit to the rolling panoramas of the landfill site,

we traversed many kilometres of cultivation and villages – dotted

with occasional Black-winged Kite – as we made our way to

Nameri. After a quick break in Tezpur, we made the final stretch of

the journey to Nameri, collecting Grey-breasted Prinia en route,

where we stopped for lunch in the company of a couple of Common

Hill Mynas.

With our hunger sated, we headed upstream along the Jia Borelli, meeting with a small groundcrew,

and then rafting back downstream to camp. The relaxing ride produced some wonderful species,

including Ruddy Shelduck, Striated Heron, Great Cormorant, Western Osprey, Common Sandpiper,

Small Pratincole, River Tern, Oriental Turtle Dove, Lesser Coucal,

Green Imperial Pigeon, Common, Crested and Pied Kingfishers,

Chestnut-headed Bee-eater, Wreathed Hornbill, Grey-throated

Martin, and River and Grey-headed Lapwings, but the undoubted

highlight was the wonderful Ibisbill feeding in the choppy flow of

water. We then returned to camp, and a spot of owling revealed

Brown Hawk-Owl before we settled for a restful night.

A quick spot of birding produced Asian Koel, Greater Flameback,

Thick-billed Warbler, Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker and Great

Hornbill in the early morning. Our departure from our lodging in

beautiful weather saw us cross the Jia Borelli River in a large dug-

out canoe, to explore the forests of Nameri. As we arrived, a

rapidly developing storm brought with it heavy rain, disrupting our

attempts to bird, as we took shelter nearby until the rain had

passed. Soon afterwards, the sun became visible through the

dissipating storm, increasing the humidity rapidly as we began to

traverse the forest looking for different bird species. It was evident

from early on that the humidity would affect our birding, as slowly

cover to avoid the intense heat. Despite the difficulties of birding in these conditions, we still managed

to locate Gadwall, Common Merganser, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Little Cormorant, Oriental Darter,

Crested Honey Buzzard, a wonderful adult Crested Goshawk, Common Moorhen, Great Stone-curlew,

Little Ringed Plover, Temminck’s Stint, Wedge-tailed Green Pigeon, Asian Barred Owlet, Silver-

backed Needletail, Asian Palm Swift, Grey-capped Pygmy and Grey-headed Woodpeckers, Black-

naped Monarch, Hair-crested Drongo, Sultan Tit, Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, Chestnut-bellied and Velvet-

fronted Nuthatches, White-rumped Shama,

Pale-chinned Blue Flycatcher, White-capped

Redstart, Siberian Stonechat, Golden-fronted

Leafbird, Lineated and Blue-eared Barbets,

Yellow-vented and Plain Flowrpeckers and

Sand Lark. An interesting mammal species

was Capped Langur. As we navigated through

the forest, we were also fortunate to find a

couple of interesting small creatures,

including a snake which remains unidentified,

and leeches which had come out after the

rainfall seeking a meal. After a relatively

successful morning, we returned to camp for a

very good lunch, which was interrupted by a

Cinereous Tit.

The afternoon session saw the group split into two, as a small group decided to remain behind at camp.

The main group headed back into Nameri forest, where they were able to locate Mountain Imperial

Pigeon, Banded Bay Cuckoo, Fulvous-breasted Woodpecker, Vernal Hanging Parrot, Common Iora,

Plaintive Cuckoo, Oriental Dollarbird, and Tickell’s Leaf and Greenish Warblers in conditions that

were more favourable and less humid. The second group spent time exploring the area surrounding the

camp, looking at the more common species, locating Black-hooded Oriole, Indian Roller, Scarlet

Minivet and Grey-backed Shrike. As the sun

was setting, the two groups were reunited

before enjoying another excellent local meal

and heading off to bed.

The next morning began with the

exploration of the local woodland

surrounding the camp, where we looked for

and found Greylag Goose in flight, Black-

crowned Night Heron, Common Emerald

Dove, Spotted Owlet, returning Amur

Falcon, Large Cuckooshrike, displaying

Bengal Bush Lark, Taiga Flycatcher, Black

Redstart and Paddyfield Pipit. We then

settled for a good breakfast before making

our way out of Nameri and through to Kaziranga National Park. After a long period of driving, through

pouring rain, we stopped to bird a small lake, where we located Eurasian Widgeon, Little Grebe and

Blyth’s Reed Warbler as we made progress toward our camp. We also enjoyed views of Rhesus

Monkey and fantastic Western Hoolock Gibbons. We arrived at our camp in the mid-afternoon, where

we enjoyed a brief lunch and a short siesta.

The afternoon was dedicated to a Safari in the back of open Safari vehicles through the Kaziranga

National Park (western) region. The birding was fantastic in this area, and we were able to add such

specials as Indian Spot-billed Duck, Swamp Francolin, Kalij Pheasant, Asian Openbill, Woolly-necked

Stork, Black-necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Spot-billed Pelican, Himalayan Vulture soaring overhead,

Crested Serpent Eagle, Pallas’s and Grey-headed Fish Eagles, White-breasted Waterhen, Red-wattled

Lapwing, Green Sanpiper, Wood Sandpiper,

Spotted Redshank, Common Greenshank,

Blossom-headed and Alexandrine Parakeets,

Common Woodshrike, Small Minivet,

Chestnut-capped Babbler,Striated Babbler

and a spectacular flock of Finn’s Weaver;

while also adding some spectacular mammal

species, including the Indian Rhinoceros,

Asian Elephant, Asian Buffalo, Wild Boar,

Swamp Deer and Hog Deer. After a fantastic

introduction to the wonder of Kaziranga and

its vast and diverse habitats, we settled for a

lovely meal in the restaurant before heading

off for a good rest.

The next day began bright and early as we headed back into Kaziranga to enjoy an elephant-back safari

through part of the park. We were fortunate, as a large storm had broken earlier with heavy rainfall but

we were not affected. We took part in the activity, managing to add Bristled Grassbird, Plain Prinia,

and Jungle and Common Mynas while also getting excellent views of many mammals in close

proximity to us, as they do not fear the elephants. We then headed on to the next area of the park

(eastern), collecting a breeding pair of Oriental Pied Hornbills at a nest en route, before arriving at a

lovely viewing point, where we were able to focus on many waterbird species. We had excellent scope

views of Cotton Pygmy Goose, Northern Shoveler, Mallard, Ferruginous Duck, Eurasian Teal, Black-

headed Ibis, Purple Heron, Intermediate Egret, Eurasian Coot, Pied Avocet, Northern Lapwing,

Richard’s Pipit, and Pheasant-tailed and

Bronze-winged Jacanas; while also

managing to get fantastic views of many

raptors, including Changeable Hawk-Eagle

and a small family of Brown Fish Owl. We

were also treated to fantastic views of many

woodland species, including King Quail,

Eurasian Hoopoe, Brown Shrike, Rufous and

Grey Treepies, Red-whiskered Bulbul, and

Blue-bearded and Green Bee-eaters before

finally exiting the park to head back to camp

as another thunderstorm threatened to break.

We arrived back at camp just in time to

avoid the downpour of another tropical storm

before meeting a short while later for lunch.

For the afternoon session, we set off in wet and rainy conditions as the storm had continued through the

middle of the day. We followed the original plan, and made our way towards a large tower in the

central section of Kaziranga. Here, we were able to view Barn Swallow and Red-breasted Parakeet.

Thankfully, at this time, the storm had blown over and we were able to continue our exploration of the

central region of the park, adding fantastic species like Common Snipe, Common Redshank, Marsh

Sandpiper, White-throated Kingfisher, Eurasian Wryneck, Bluethroat, Black-rumped Flameback, Ashy

Woodswallow, Ashy Prinia, Baya Weaver and a stunning

Himalayan Rubythoat that had come out after the rainfall had

passed. We then visited the final location for the evening,

overlooking a large waterhole, before returning to camp as

darkness fell. We arrived at the camp a short while later, and

settled to enjoy another dish of the local cuisine before returning

to our rooms for our final night in Assam on the extension.

The final morning was dedicated to birding in a local forest

abutting a tea plantation, where we were able to locate such

interesting species as Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Pin-tailed Green

Pigeon, Green-billed Malkoha, Asian Emerald Cuckoo, Square-

tailed Drongo-Cuckoo, Bronzed Drongo, House Crow, Asian

Fairy Bluebird and Crimson Sunbird. We then departed

Kaziranga for the final time; while also wishing a couple of the

tour participants farewell before we made our way back to

Guwahati.

On arrival in Guwahati, we picked up our new participants while

also getting views of Eurasian Tree Sparrow. We then made our

way to Samdrap Jongkhar and the Bhutanese border, picking up

Great Egrets en route. As we passed through the grand border gate, where Yellow-footed Green

Pigeons fed, we met our groundcrew who transferred us to our overnight accommodation and the base

from which we would begin exploring the country’s magnificent low-level forest.

The next morning dawned bright and sunny,

and we began our fantastic birding from our

accommodations. We managed to add a vast

array of specials, including Asian Palm

Swift, the difficult Dark-rumped Swift,

Rufescent Prinia, Red-whiskered Bulbul,

House Swift, Oriental Dollarbird in flight, a

pair of Large Woodshrike, a Common Iora, a

couple of Scarlet Minivet, Black-naped

Monarch, obliging Jungle Babbler, a male

Asian Fairy Bluebird, Chestnut-tailed

Starling, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Pale-

chinned Blue Flycatcher, a spectacular

Crimson Sunbird, and Yellow-vented and

Plain Flowerpeckers which showed

beautifully. We also obtained excellent views of a troop of Capped Langurs and a Hoary-bellied

Squirrel. After breakfast, we began winding through the fantastically dramatic scenery of this

wonderfully remote region. The higher elevations provided more jaw-dropping scenery at every step.

The verdant forest edges with precipitous drops hid many jewels from us, only to be betrayed by their

calls from the dense thickets. Thankfully, we managed to pry them out and enjoyed excellent views of

many spectacular species such as Crested Honey Buzzard, Black Eagle, Crested and Northern

Goshawks, Common Emerald Dove, Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo, Oriental Pied Hornbill, spectacular

views of Rufous Woodpecker, Sultan Tit, Long-tailed Sibia, Striated Yuhina, Orange-bellied Leafbird,

Streaked Spiderhunter, Eurasian Tree Sparrow, White-rumped

Munia, and Grey-chinned and Short-billed Minivets. The river

streams also held some good species and we were able to view

Little Cormorant, Western Osprey, Grey Wagtail, Common

Kingfisher, Crested Kingfisher, Plumbeous Water and White-

capped Redstarts, and Black-backed and Slaty-backed Forktails.

The nearby statue of Guru Rinpuche provided our first taste of the

cultural experience of Bhutan.

As mid-morning approached, we were surprised with a lovely

coffee stop from where we were able to continue birding in a

secluded area, which provided views of Ashy Drongo, Blue

Whistling Thrush, Slaty-backed Flycatcher, Striated and Black-

crested Bulbuls, Grey-throated Babbler, Lesser Necklaced

Laughingthrush, Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, and Barn, Red-rumped

and Striated Swallows. We then continued onward to lunch, which

was expertly prepared by our efficient groundstaff. We then slowly

made our way toward base camp, where we would be spending the

next couple of nights; however, we still spent time birding and

managed to add our main target, a Beautiful Nuthatch which

feeding on a dead tree covered in epiphytes. We also added some more common species, which

included Mountain Imperial Pigeon, Grey Treepie, Blue Rock Thrush, Cinereous Tit, Grey-hooded

Warbler, Blue-winged Minla, Rusty-fronted Barwing, Silver-eared Mesia, Common Kestrel, Long-

tailed Broadbill, Large-billed Crow, Bhutan Laughingthrush, Rufous Sibia, Whiskered Yuhina,

Rufous-gorgeted and Little Pied Flycatchers, Fire-breasted Flowerpecker, Russet Sparrow, Olive-

backed Pipit, Scarlet Finch, and Lesser Racket-tailed and Bronzed Drongos. As dusk approached, we

eventually made our way into camp which

had been set up by the groundcrew, and were

able to enjoy a wonderful dinner before a

good night’s rest in our tents.

We set out early the following morning to try

and locate a few new species, having

successfully located our main target the night

before. The weather was a fantastic ally as we

set out, assisting in producing many excellent

species for our lists, including easily

identifiable Oriental Turtle Dove, Asian

Emerald and Himalayan Cuckoos, Himalayan

Swiftlet, Black-winged Cuckooshrike, Long-

tailed Minivet, Taiga, Verditer and Slaty-

Blue Flycatchers and Oriental White-eye. We continued to bird through the area in the morning,

gaining incredible views of Barred Cuckoo-Dove, Rufous-necked Hornbill, Great Barbet, Greater

Yellownape, Maroon Oriole, Grey-headed Canary-Flycatcher, Black-throated Bushtit, Streak-breasted

Scimitar Babbler, Blue-winged Laughingthrush, Rufous-capped and Golden Babblers, White-tailed

Nuthatch, Sikkim Treecreeper, Small Niltava, Chestnut-bellied Rock Thrush, Yellow-throated Fulvetta,

and Green-backed and Yellow-cheeked Tit. We also added Red-vented and Black Bulbul, Besra,

Black-faced Warbler, Tickell’s Leaf Warbler, Brown-flanked Bush Warbler, Red-faced Liocichla, and

Buff-barred and Whistler’s Warbler to our ever-growing lists. The increased bird activity due to the

warmth of the morning sunlight meant we

were often left bewildered by the vast

number of warblers and brightly-coloured

species seemingly appearing from all

corners of the forest. We returned to camp a

short while later, but not before we had

added the uncommon, goat-like antelope,

Serow, to our mammal lists. At camp, we

enjoyed a well-prepared lunch courtesy of

our groundstaff before enjoying a brief

siesta.

As is so often the case, the afternoon session

was a little quieter. The weather which had

been so warm in the morning turned to a

misty and cool afternoon with very little sunshine, and as a result the bird activity had decreased.

However, we were still able to locate some very special species in the forest surrounding the camp,

which included Himalayan Cutia and Grey Bush Chat. After a very successful day, we returned to

camp where we enjoyed another warm dinner and the local dragon warmer before returning to our tents

for good night of sleep.

The following morning, we enjoyed an early breakfast before

departing in the direction of Trashigang, with clear blue skies

overhead, birding as we made progress on the route. We were

quite successful, as we managed to locate Crested Serpent Eagle,

Spotted Dove, White-throated Needletail, Blyth’s Swift, Golden-

throated Barbet, Crimson-breasted Woodpecker, White-breasted

Parrotbill, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Rufous-bellied Niltava,

Common Rosefinch, and White-throated and Yellow-bellied

Fantails before stopping for lunch along the way, with Himalayan

Striped Squirrel for added company.

We managed to locate Yellow-billed Blue Magpie, Yellow-

browed Tit, Rufous-winged Fulvetta, Blyth’s Leaf Warbler, and

Grey-cheeked, Chestnut-crowned, Lemon-rumped and Ashy

Throated Warblers before driving further along our route, where

we located Yellow-rumped Honeyguide on the cliff faces near

some bee hives. We also managed to add a couple more species

along the route, namely Striated and White-crested

Laughingthrushes; while the flooded rice paddies produced

fantastic views of Black-tailed Crake, Plaintive Cuckoo, Siberian

Stonechat, Long-tailed Shrike, and Green-tailed and Black

Throated Sunbirds. Not long afterwards, we arrived at our accommodations, where we settled in for a

local meal and another good night’s sleep.

An early morning departure was the order of the day, and we settled for a very early breakfast before

making headway on our route to Yongkola. Roadworks meant that the road was in very poor condition,

but we managed to push on, stopping regularly as we made our way to our accommodation in

Yongkola, situated at a height of 1800m along the famous Lingmethang Road. To reach this fantastic

birding area, we covered a range of altitudes, including passing over the 2,300-metre-high Cori La

Pass. Despite the fact that this was a travel day, we still managed to bird along the way. As we

progressed, we added Himalayan Vulture, Mountain Hawk-Eagle, Himalayan Buzzard, White-throated

Kingfisher, Grey-capped Pygmy, Grey-headed and Rufous-bellied Woodpeckers, Hair-crested Drongo,

Himalayan and Ashy Bulbuls, Nepal House

Martin, Striated Prinia, Puff-throated Babbler,

White-throated Laughingthrush, Bar-throated

Minla, Chestnut-bellied Nuthatch, Grey-

winged Blackbird, Large Niltava, Ultramarine

Flycatcher, Blue-fronted Redstart, Blue-

capped Rock Thrush, Mrs Gould's Sunbird,

Rufous-breasted Accentor, Yellow-breasted

Greenfinch, Crested Bunting and possibly the

highlight of the day: a Tawny Fish Owl. We

also added Black Giant Squirrel. With weary

bodies, we arrived at camp earlier than usual,

allowing us some siesta time and the

opportunity to enjoy an early night after

another good meal.

The next day-and-a-half were spent exploring the lower and middle sections of the Lingmethang Road,

where we added an array of forest and bamboo-dwelling species, despite rather variable and

challenging weather conditions. Our first morning began rather hazily and a little bit cool, as we began

our attempts to locate as many forest-dwelling species as possible. Initially, the cold conditions

rendered the forest quiet and inactive, but as

the warmth seeped into the valley the trees

came alive with activity and producing such

sought-after species as Hill Partridge, Red-

tailed Minla, Golden-breasted Fulvetta,

Black-throated Parrotbill, Dark-sided

Flycatcher, and Red-headed and Ward’s

Trogons before locating a Northern Red

Muntjac and a family of Assam Macaque,

and a timely stop for lunch.

After lunch, we slowly made our way back

to camp, focusing on particular species.

Although it seemed to be rather quiet, we

located many secretive species, including

White-naped Yuhina, Rufous-throated Wren-Babbler and Long-billed Wren-Babbler, as we made our

way back towards the lodge. A brief siesta followed by dinner allowed us to extend our activities into

the night and we managed to locate Hodgson’s Giant Flying Squirrel, but sadly the Hodgson’s

Frogmouth remained elusive.

Our final morning in Yongkola was relatively clear with a bit of cloud cover, meaning the conditions

were quite cool. We began with a pre-breakfast walk, which turned up Rusty-cheeked Scimitar

Babbler, Nepal Fulvetta and Black-chinned Yuhina before settling in for a warm breakfast. After

breakfast, we departed the lodge and made our way along the Lower Lingmethang Road, stopping

regularly as we encountered bird parties which

produced very good views of Spot-winged

Starling, Mountain Bulbul, Rufous-vented

Yuhina, Yellow-browed Warbler, Spot-winged

Grosbeak, Rufous-necked Laughingthrush and

Golden-naped Finch. We also stopped in the

canopy forest to target a few of the more

difficult species, including Black-headed Shrike-

Babbler, Hoary-throated Barwing and Pale Blue

Flycatcher – which we had fantastic views of

while also viewing Orange-bellied Himalayan

Squirrel. With the weather steadily getting

worse, we stopped at our lunch area to enjoy a

good meal as a large thunderstorm broke

overhead.

Once the storm had passed, we made our way toward Sengor along the famous upper Lingmethang

Road, where we hoped we would have the chance to connect with one of the main target species: the

Satyr Tragopan. With perfect weather conditions, we were not disappointed, as we encountered a large

number of both male and female tragopans on the side of the road. We continued to bird all the way to

camp, encountering many other species, including Little Forktail, Short-eared Owl, Red-billed Chough,

Crimson-browed Finch and White-collared Blackbird, before we arrived at our campsite. After a short

turnaround, we headed back to the area along the upper Lingmethang Road, where we encountered

more tragopans in the gloomy and misty conditions, which provided fantastic views and made all

participants very excited. We returned to

camp, where we enjoyed dinner in a warm

dining room which the groundcrew had set

up as the outside temperature slowly

decreased.

The next morning began with a very warm

cup of coffee, which was most welcome in

the cold conditions before we set out for the

day of birding. We headed into the

Himalayan hemlock forests, providing us

with a prime opportunity to connect with

many new species, including the gaudy

Blood Pheasant moving along the forest

floor, foraging. The hemlock trees also

played host to Darjeeling Woodpecker, Green Shrike-Babbler, Spotted Nutcracker, Hume's Bush

Warbler, Rufous-fronted Bushtit, Black-faced Laughingthrush, loads of Fire-tailed Myzornis, White-

browed Fulvetta, Stripe-throated Yuhina, Hodgson's and Rusty-flanked Treecreepers, White-browed

Bush Robin, Rufous-breasted Bush Robin, Himalayan Bluetail, Plain Mountain Finch, Red-headed

Bullfinch, and Rufous-vented, Coal and Grey Crested Tits in the company of the only mammal seen

during the day, the Large-eared Pika, foraging in the undergrowth. As midday approached, we settled

at the lower altitudes, where we enjoyed another field lunch before investigating the surrounding

rhododendron thickets, where we had outstanding views of Grey-backed Shrike, Fire-tailed Sunbird,

Dark-rumped Rosefinch and Spotted Laughingthrush before returning to our base.

Having exhausted our options in the

hemlock forest, we headed back towards

camp, where we took a short break before

making another run along the Upper

Lingmethang Road in search of more Satyr

Tragopan, which, again, were easily located

before we returned to camp for dinner.

We woke the next morning to cloudy, misty

conditions and generally poor visibility. We

took the decision at this stage to head back

in the direction of Yongkola, where we still

needed to connect with some bird species

we had missed earlier in the trip. Things

began well, when we managed to locate

Spotted Forktail and Slender-billed Scimitar Babbler feeding on the blossoms of select Rhododendron

species. Unfortunately, at this stage, the inclement weather meant we had to move to new areas where

we attempted to bird further. After a frustrating period where we were not able to bird, we finally found

a spot that was clear of mist and allowed us to locate some wonderful species, including Blyth's Shrike-

Babbler and Black-eared Shrike-Babbler. As it got warmer the mist dissipated, allowing us to focus on

some more difficult skulking species – the likes of White-browed Shortwing providing brief glimpses

for some and proving rather difficult in the low-light conditions. With conditions again deteriorating,

we stopped for lunch in the field.

A short while after lunch, we began birding

through the bamboo thickets, which

produced some fantastic bird parties with a

suite of colourful species, including Broad-

billed Warbler, before the weather finally

intervened and stopped us from any further

activity in the area. We returned to camp a

short while later, locating the regular Satyr

Tragopan at the roadside before enjoying an

exploration of the immediate area around

camp, which produced Chestnut-headed

Tesia before settling for our final night in

Sengor.

Our final morning in Sengor saw us out and

about before sunrise searching for a Himalayan Owl, which provided brief but enjoyable views before

we settled for breakfast. As we departed the camp, we managed to locate Snow Pigeons feeding on the

banks of a fallow farm field. A short while later, we entered the hemlock forests where we managed to

locate Eurasian Hoopoe, Eurasian Magpie, Great Parrotbill, Golden Bush Robin, Alpine Accentor and

Eurasian Wren before passing over the Thrumshing La Pass and on toward Jakar (Bumthang). As we

descended in altitude, the temperature increased and the weather cleared to beautiful blue skies before

we finally stopped for lunch next to a small stream in an open field.

We immediately began exploring the area

around our lunch site once our meal had

been completed, and managed to locate the

difficult Solitary Snipe while also enjoying

views of Oriental Skylark and Brown Dipper

in the immediate vicinity. With a lot of

travelling still head of us, we made our way

towards our destination, locating Himalayan

Monal, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch and

Himalayan White-browed Rosefinch along

the way. Red Fox and Wild Boar provided

welcome mammal surprises. We arrived in

Jakar in the late afternoon, where we were

lucky to find Brown Parrotbill feeding in

some dense bamboo thickets near town;

while also managing to locate the monotypic Ibisbill, and Green and Common Sandpipers in the Jakar

River before arriving at our lodge as the heavens opened. A short while later, we were treated to a well-

prepared local meal in the warm dining area before retreating for a welcome rest in our cosy

accommodations.

The following day was essentially a travel day from Jakar to Trongsa via the Latong La pass. Although

we had a long distance to cover, we stopped regularly to bird and were awarded good views of Green-

crowned Warbler and Common Myna. The

valley was awash with brightly coloured

rhododendrons as we made our way down

towards our accommodations within site of

the massive Trongsa Dzong – a fort turned

monastery built atop a series of high ridges.

We arrived at our camp a short while later,

where we enjoyed a well-prepared lunch.

The afternoon was set aside for the

exploration of the Trongsa Dzong that

loomed large in front of our hotel.

Exploring the streets, we took in the culture

and fantastic designs of this historical

masterpiece. Having enjoyed the cultural

visit, we decided to try our hand at birding and headed off to a nearby site in the hope of adding further

species to our lists. Although it was relatively quiet in the late afternoon, we still managed to add

Common Cuckoo before returning to camp for dinner and a restful sleep.

An early morning departure was once again on the cards, after a good breakfast. We headed south,

making our way toward the lush bamboo forests of Tingtibi. We began birding as we departed from

Trongsa, managing to find another monotypic species in the form of the skulking Spotted Elachura,

which provided amazing views. We continued further and birded along some dense riverine forest,

which produced some really fantastic species: Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo, Chestnut-crowned

Laughingthrush and Black-hooded Oriole all showed well before the mist began to rise from the valley

below, curtailing our efforts. Our next stop was for tea and an attempt to locate the Black-throated

Prinia, which showed distantly, leaving us

desiring better views – but we were surprised

with views of a Tickell's Thrush. Once tea

was complete, we made our way along the

Mangdue Chu River, following its course to

our lunch stop, where a Rufous-bellied Eagle

displayed well for us as we enjoyed another

expertly prepared meal.

With lunch complete, we began the final

stretch of our drive to Tingtibi and our base

camp for the next couple of days. On arrival

in the hamlet of Tingtibi, we tried to locate a

recently observed White-bellied Heron, yet

despite all efforts, this critically endangered

species remained elusive. We were, however, rewarded with views of a Kalij Pheasant, River Lapwing,

Blue-bearded Bee-eater, Pin-tailed and Wedge-tailed Green Pigeons, White-throated Bulbul and Great

Cormorant. We arrived at camp just before sunset in time to view a large number of Great Hornbills

coming in to roost from their feeding grounds while we prepared to settle for dinner and a relaxing

evening.

The next morning began with a major mission: to locate the

critically endangered White-bellied Heron. We returned to the

area where the bird had been seen two days prior, but we were

unable to locate the individual along the river course. Having

given up hope, we headed higher into the bamboo thickets where

we managed to locate Blue-throated Blue Flycatcher, Banded Bay

and Chestnut-winged Cuckoos, Blue-throated Barbet, White-

browed Piculet, Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrike, Rufous-faced

Warbler, and Fulvous-breasted and Bay Woodpeckers; while also

getting excellent views of Gee’s Golden Langur. All of a sudden,

we got glimpses of a large bird in the river, a White-bellied

Heron, fishing on a near bank. Minutes later, we were standing

above the area looking at a fantastic specimen through the scope.

Overjoyed at having found this critically endangered species, we

returned to camp for lunch and a brief siesta.

We set out for our afternoon run, targeting specific species as we

had been successful in the morning with many of the common

targets. We headed down to a mature stand of bamboo, where we

managed to locate a few common species: Ashy Woodswallow,

Common Tailorbird, Yellow-bellied Warbler and Yellow-vented

Warbler. A few minutes later, we were viewing White-browed Scimitar Babbler while also getting

views of White-hooded Babbler in the company of Pale-billed Parrotbill as they slowly moved closer to

us, heading for their roost site. Satisfied with another day’s birding, we returned to base for dinner and

another good night’s rest.

The next morning entailed an early

departure from our base to return to

Trongsa. We chose the route that took us

through a quiet stretch of mature forest

where activity was a little erratic. However,

we still managed to add some good species,

including Lesser Yellownape, Common

Woodshrike and White-bellied Erpornis.

We then made our way towards our lunch

stop, where rain once again intervened,

leaving us to eat our lunch under the cover

of a tent and limiting our birding.

We departed after the rain eased up,

allowing us to attempt to locate new species

regularly, and were rewarded with Himalayan Goral. Unfortunately, with the threat of further rainfall,

many species chose to remain hidden. However, we were brought to a standstill when we heard the call

of the Common Green Magpie, and after many frustrating moments we managed brief glimpses of this

spectacular species. The rest of the afternoon was uneventful, as rain set in once again, and so we

travelled directly for our accommodation, where we enjoyed a good meal and settled for the night.

Our final morning in Trongsa saw us enjoying a relaxed morning of birding around the lodge. The

well-wooded garden produced many beautiful and otherwise difficult species, including Peregrine

Falcon in flight, Russet Bush Warbler, spectacular Red-billed Leiothrix and another chance at

Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush out in the open while on the manicured lawns. We finally departed

Trongsa for Kuruthang in the mid-morning, via the Phodrang and Pele La passes, following a very

scenic route along the river course. Along the route, we stopped to view Black-throated Prinia,

Eurasian Jay and Large-billed Leaf Warbler

before pushing on to our destination in

Phunaka. As we arrived in Kuruthang, we

stopped along the river which offered us the

chance to connect with a few water birds,

including Ruddy Shelduck, Gadwall,

Eurasian Wigeon, Mallard, Great Crested

Grebe, Little Stint, Wood Sandpiper,

Common Greenshank, White Wagtail, Little

Ringed Plover and Lesser Sand Plover; while

also getting views of a new species: White-

browed Wagtail. A short while later, we

arrived at our accommodation and enjoyed

dinner and a restful night.

We departed our accommodation early the next morning and made our way towards Jigma Dorji

National Park, where we set about trying to locate any species we had missed earlier in the tour. The

Barred Owlet, fantastic views of Blyth’s Shrike-Babbler, a very brief glimpse of a Slaty-bellied Tesia, a

very worn and tired looking Hume's Short-toed Lark and a skulking Lesser Shortwing giving a brief

excellent open view for some while moving through the undergrowth. We also managed to get better

views of Brown Dipper while also viewing a pair of Yellow-throated Martens during a coffee stop,

before departing the park to a local sports ground where we

enjoyed a well-prepared lunch.

A short while later, we returned to camp to prepare for another

round of cultural exploration, at arguably Bhutan’s most famous

dzong: Phunaka Dzong. The spectacular monastery, adorned with

its rich tapestries and religious paintings, formed the centrepiece

of our afternoon activity; while our return to camp yielded a

Slender-billed Oriole at close quarters before we settled in for the

night.

The next morning, we departed Khurutang and made our way to

the country’s capital: Thimphu. First, however, we had some new

species to add to our lists. We stopped to get views of a Mandarin

Duck female in the company of an Ibisbill before pushing on to

the Royal Botanical Gardens, where we began birding in earnest

as we located many exciting species: Ultramarine Flycatcher,

Speckled Wood Pigeon, Fire-capped Tit, Grey-sided Bush

Warbler, Brown Parrotbill, Common Chiffchaff, Tickell's Thrush,

Brown Bullfinch, and Darjeeling and Rufous-breasted

Woodpeckers.

After lunch, we set out to explore another part of the Botanical Gardens, when once again the heavens

opened, leaving us stranded and wet as we made our way back to the vehicle. We slowly made our way

up to the Dochu La pass, where we stopped to enjoy a warm coffee and a slice of cake before making

our final approach to Thimphu, adding House Crow as we went. It was the craftsmanship of a 51m tall

seated Buddha statue that indicated that we had arrived in the capital. A short while later, we settled

into comfy accommodation before joining the Yangphel staff for an enjoyable and festive dinner before

returning to the hotel to retire for the evening.

Our second to last morning saw us arrive

early at the Tiger’s Nest monastery, perched

precariously on a cliff face overlooking the

valley. While some participants made it to the

top with a great deal of effort, some others

were forced to return to the bottom as the

strenuous 8km hike, ascending 800m from the

parking area, proved too much. However,

everybody was able to get excellent views of

many different bird species, including

specials such as Spotted Laughingthrush,

Solitary Snipe, Indian Blue Robin, Golden

Bush Robin, Slaty Blue Flycatcher and

Spotted Nutcracker, before making our way

to our hotel for a welcome rest and an excellent dinner overlooking the well-lit Paro Dzong.

Our final full day of the tour saw us up at

the crack of dawn. Before the sun had risen

we rode out from camp with a group of

sleepy participants determined to locate a

Himalayan Monal. The weather conditions

seemed good, and as we began to ascend the

3,986-metre pass, we got glimpses of a

large, colourful chicken-like bird in the

distance. We quickly covered the distance to

reach the Himalayan Monal, where we

enjoyed incredible uninterrupted views of

this amazing species for about 30 minutes.

We continued towards the top of the pass;

however, the weather once again turned. We

were constantly on the move, trying to stay

ahead of the mist layer, yet we still managed to add some fantastic bird species, including Goldcrest,

Alpine Thrush, Asian House Martin, and Collared and White-winged Grosbeaks. With the weather

eventually making birding impossible, we stopped for lunch at an impromptu tent set up by a small

groundcrew.

We returned to the lodge a short while after lunch. At this point, the guests were offered the option to

go shopping or to find a few new birds. Those that chose to look for bird species managed to locate

Spotted Laughingthrush before we returned to camp to enjoy our final dinner as a group.

Our final morning of the tour dawned clear and beautiful, with many of us enjoying the luxury of an

extra sleep-in before breakfast. A short while later, we were transferred to Paro International Airport,

where we said our farewells and parted ways after a successful tour through the wonderful Buddhist

kingdom of Bhutan. We recorded 449 species, while also adding 25 mammals by tour completion.
