Our cover spotlights the trio of coaches Jeff Wallace,Dan Magill and Manny Diaz, who have served updecades of championship winning tennis at The Univer-sity of Georgia. I was talking to a friend recently aboutwhat a family the former tennis teams make as a whole.Players from multiple teams all get together to watch theDawgs’ current matches but also on football gamedaysand weddings. It is a tribute to the community thecoaches on the cover have created and nurtured. And itis probably another reason when the NCAAs have beenheld in Athens, they draw some of the largest crowds.

Our sports guru on staff, Jeff Dantzler, is no strangerto this great group of guys that spans several generations ofUGA tennis. He counts many as his dearest friends andfuture groomsmen and Coach Magill is his most belovedmentor. He has been talking about these guys coming totown for a reunion at the NCAAs for months. And hedoes a great job giving accolades to the 1985 nationalchamps in his column on page 4.

We are all fortunate to get the opportunity to attenda Bulldawg Bites where some of the 1985 NationalChampionship team will be holding court. With another round of finals and graduationcomplete, Athens seems to be taking a collectivesigh of relief as 20,000 students have vacated theclassic city for the summer. Traffic is light, there isno wait at restaurants downtown, and “for rent”signs are spreading like weeds in preparation forAugust.

While summer brings a leisurely change ofpace to most Athenians, as the heat rises on cam-pus so does the pressure at the University’s DanMagill Tennis Complex. The next two weeks bringthe return of the NCAA Men’ and Women’s TennisChampionships to the “Mecca of Collegiate Ten-nis”, Athens, Georgia. We have prepared a specialissue of Bulldawg Illustrated Athens to serve as aspectator’s guide to the tournament, and I hopeyou enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed put-ting it together.

One of the most anticipated events of the tour-nament will be the induction of new members tothe Intercollegiate Tennis Association Hall of Fame,which is located right here in Athens.

“Each year we put in five or ten great playersfrom the past” explained Dan Magill, Hall of FameCurator and Chairman of the Hall of Fame com-mittee. “This year we will have the new membershere for a ceremony May 26th, where they will getan award and a green Masters-type coat.”

This year, former UGA standout and currentExecutive Director and Chief Operating Officer ofthe USTA Gordon Smith will be enshrined in theITA Hall of Fame.

“Gordon was from Rome, about 6 foot five, aleft hander. He graduated in journalism, he alsowent on and later got a degree in law (also fromUGA)….and he became recognized as the mostoutstanding trial lawyer in the Unites States.’ “Buthe always was associated with tennis in someway…and after he retired as a lawyer, the UnitedStates Tennis Association asked him to be theirChief Operating Officer” explains Magill, whocoached Smith when he was roommates at Georgiawith current UGA head tennis coach Manuel Diaz.

I had a chance to sit at Smith’s table when hewas inducted to the Grady Fellowship this pastNovember. As a nervous future law student atUGA, I had plenty to ask this giant of the Georgialegal scene before I was even aware he was incharge of the USTA as well. For a man of such in-credible accomplishments, he was more than pa-tient with all of my annoying questions andrequests for advice.

With the Georgia men’s team and women Bull-dawg standouts Chelsea Gullickson and NadjaGilchrist competing for NCAA titles, the atmos-phere at the 2010 NCAA Championship is sure tobe electric. As Coach Diaz told me this week, “Thething that makes Athens unique is the crowds.”Let’s live up to our reputation and show up loudand barking for the 2010 tournament.

Georgia tennis hit the big time 25 years agoIt was 25 years ago when the proud

University of Georgia tennis team hit thehighest of highs, christened the grandestof careers, and set the table for the Bull-dogs to become the premier program inthe land – all behind the greatest seniorclass in the sport’s history.

No program in any sport at anyschool in America has enjoyed the incred-ible sustained success that Georgia tennishas over the past half century-plus. Withonly two coaches since 1953, the stabilityand excellence of Georgia tennis is unpar-alleled.

The Greatest Georgia Bulldog everDan Magill, while also serving as directorof the Bulldog Clubs, Sports InformationDirector and barnstorming promoter non-parallel carved out the most wins of anycoach in college tennis history. In a tran-sition of power leading to continued great-ness rivaling Dimaggio’s passing of theYankees centerfield torch to Mantle andYoung taking over behind center for Mon-tana in San Francisco, Magill’s assistantand handpicked successor Manuel Diazkept the locomotive steamrolling to cham-pionships.

Since 1971, Georgia has won an as-tounding 25 Southeastern Conferencechampionships. The highlight of the Bull-dogs reign came from 1985-2008, whenthe Bulldogs captured six national titlesand played in the NCAA ChampionshipFinals an incredible 13 times in 24 years.

It is fitting that the tournament isback in Athens for the silver anniversaryof that first national championship team –one that came together and delivered apowerhouse performance behind a re-markable group of seniors.

The top three spots in the Georgialineup were filled by Mikael Pernfors,George Bezecny and Allen Miller, all mem-bers of various UGA, collegiate tennis, andstate Halls of Fame. All were amongst thegreatest athletes to ever play at Georgiaand all have gone on to highly successfulcareers in and around the game.

Pernfors followed up the nationalchampionship by winning the NCAA sin-gles title for a second consecutive year, be-coming the first player since DennisRalston at SMU two years earlier to ac-complish this incredible feat. In fact, thenext player to compete in two straight fi-nals was Georgia’s Wade McGuire in 1992and 1993. The next player to win twostraight individual national champi-onships was Georgia’s Matias Boeker in2001 and 2002. Pernfors is a member ofthe college tennis hall of fame, the state ofGeorgia tennis hall of fame and centercourt at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex isnamed for him. Pernfors went on to a

highly successful pro career, highlightedby a run to the finals of the 1986 FrenchOpen.

In his senior year, Pernfors went 72-3, and in the NCAA final, he defeated hisroommate – Bezecny.

“Gorgeous George” won 42 of hisfinal 43 matches heading into the singlesfinal, most notably, an incredible victoryin the team final when Bezecny overcameagonizing pain from an injured knee tonotch a critical win in the triumph overUCLA. A member of UGA’s Circle ofHonor as one of the most distinguishedathletes in Bulldog annals, the three-timeAll-American is amongst a small group ofplayers who has captured a team nationalchampionship and played an individualtitle. Bezecny also has gone on to a stellarcareer in the game. He is currently thehead pro at the Fisher Island Club inMiami.

Miller is the first ever four time All-American in University of Georgia athletichistory. A member of the College TennisHall of Fame, the Circle of Honor and stateof Georgia tennis hall of fame, this lifelongBulldog love literally got to live the dreamof delivering a national championship tohis beloved alma mater. As a sophomorein 1983, Miller teamed with OlaMalmqvist to win the NCAA DoublesChampionship – joining the aforemen-tioned elite group to win a team title andplay for an individual championship.Miller and Pernfors wound up the 1985season as the No. 1 ranked doubles teamas well.

The greatest senior class ever had an-other member, All-SEC standout DeaneFrey, who enjoyed a stellar career. The No.5 player, who had the clinching point inthe victory over UCLA, was Philip John-son, one of the great players in Bulldoghistory. Johnson moved to the No. 1 spotthe next two years and went undefeated inSEC duel play. He led the Bulldogs to the1987 national championship in Magill’snext-to-last season at the helm. FreshmanTrey Carter was a standout in the No. 6spot, and joined Johnson in becoming thefirst Bulldog to win two team nationalchampionships.

These extraordinary Bulldogs, who’sclass, popularity and success in their per-sonal and professional lives dwarfs theirincredible success for Georgia tennis, hasgreat cause for celebration on the 25-yearanniversary of the grand championship.

NCAA TENNISCHAMPIONSHIPS

A lot has changed since Athens hosted its first NCAA Ten-nis Championship in 1972.

For instance, the Billboard top 20 featured songs such asAmerica’s Horse With No Name and Neil Young’s Heart ofGold. In 1972 the Watergate Scandal broke loose, a gallon ofgas cost 55 cents and crowds were raving about the new Fran-cis Ford Coppola film, The Godfather.

In 1972, the Georgia tennis team featured a freshman hot-shot tennis player from San Juan, Puerto Rico named ManuelDiaz. 37 years later, the Puerto Rican has reached legendarystatus in the collegiate tennis world and currently serves as thehead coach of Georgia’s storied men’s tennis program.

Despite all of his successes over the past four decades,which include a .831 winning percentage over 21 seasons as ahead coach, coaching Georgia to 12 SEC Championships andfour NCAA Tennis Championships, and being selected as theWilson/ITA National Coach-of-the Year in 1995, 2001 and2007, Coach Diaz can remember playing in that 1972 AthensTournament like it was yesterday.

“The first time we hosted the NCAAs in 1972,” remem-bers Diaz, “I was a freshman and competed in that event. It wasthe first time we had scoreboards on every court and we had

chairs on every court…The crowds were monstrous.”While the tournament committee had already settled on

sites for the tournament through 1976, the NCAA was so im-pressed with Athens that the University became the “semi-per-manent” home of the tournament beginning in 1977. Georgiahosted the NCAAs 13 years in a row from 1977-89 before thetournament left for Southern California in 1990. “It was a phe-nomenal setting…for a round of golf,” said Diaz, “I think thetournament committee saw that it was a great setting for a pro-fessional event, but it didn’t compare to Athens for the NCAAs.”

Since 1990, Athens has hosted the event 11 more times.Diaz gives tremendous credit to living legend Dan Magill for theevent’s success in Athens. “Coach Magill was so instrumental ingetting such great support for the event,” said Diaz.

This week’s NCAA Championships will mark the 22ndtime the national championship will be decided in the classiccity. “We aren’t trying to corner the tournament, but we areavailable and willing to host,” explained Diaz. The event re-turns to Athens in 2012 after heading to Palo Alto, Californiain 2011.

“It’s just a great treat for the University to have an event ofthis magnitude in our own backyard,” said Diaz. It provides a

great deal of recognition to the University and the fact that thecommittee continues to choose Athens for a tournament site isa tribute to the University and Athens as a whole.”

To call Dan Magill a living legend maybe somewhat of an understatement.When I went to get some photos andcheck out the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hallof Fame located in the complex with hisnamesake, you can imagine how sur-prised I was to find Coach Magill sittingbehind a desk, ready and willing to givea personal tour of the facility. It’s good to be the Mecca of College Tennis.The Athens heat, the thunderous crowd, and anavalanche of barking mad Georgia fans have char-acterized the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championshipsfor 22 of the past 38 years, making UGA the semi-permanent home of the most prestigious event incollege tennis.

Bulldawg Illustrated had a chance to catch upwith Head Men’s Tennis Coach Manuel Diaz to geta quick insider’s perspective on what to watch foras competition heats up on South Campus.

In the singles tournament, who are the majorcontenders for the NCAA title this year?

Well, there are a lot of talented players in thefield, and any of the top 10 players is capable ofwinning the title. Some players to watch are Hen-rique Cunha from Duke (5’10’’ Freshman, Brazil),JP Smith at Tennessee (6’2’’ Junior, Australia),Oleksandr Nedovyesov from Oklahoma State (6’3’’Senior, Ukraine), Steve Johnson from SouthernCalifornia (6’4’’, Sophomore, Orange, CA) andChase Buchanan at Ohio State (6’2”, Sophomore,New Albany, Ohio)

Who are the teams to watch for in the teamtournament?

Well, You have gotta say Virginia and Ten-nessee, who have great years and probably go intothis tournament as the favorites. But, there areprobably another four teams that could beat any-one in the field, its just a matter of if they can putfour matches together. That is the big challenge ina tournament like this.

While the Dan Magill Tennis Complex has played host to the Men’sNCAA Tournament 22 times, 2010 marks only the fifth time thewomen’s tournament will be held in Athens.

Bulldawg Illustrated had a chance to catch up with Georgia headwomen’s tennis coach Jeff Wallace before practice Monday to get someinsight on what hosting the tournament means to the program and whoto keep an eye out for on the court.

Speak a little about some teams to watch out for in the 2010 I mean, obviously you have got to take a look at Baylor, being the

#1 seed. I would say North Carolina has had one of the best years thatthey have ever had, and then you have Florida who won the SECChampionship, so I think that they are a dangerous team as well. But Ithink that any of the 16 teams coming in feel that this is a year whereanything can happen, so I think that everyone has a game plan to comein here and win this.

How does hosting the NCAA’s impact the Georgia Tennis pro-gram?

Well, it’s just a great facility, I mean, it’s the Dan Magill Tennis Com-plex, “The Mecca of College Tennis”, so it’s a great place for all of theseteams to come, and I think everyone enjoys coming to Athens andspending time in this facility. And within our community we have agreat college town, so it’s neat to have the biggest tournament in all ofcollege tennis here on campus.

On the singles side of things, who are some players that fansshould follow closely?

Obviously you have Chelsea (Gullickson) and Nadja (Gilchrist)who are two Georgia players who are going to be playing, so we certainlywant the fans to come out and support them. Georgia Tech has the #1player in the country in Irina Falconi. You know, again I feel like it’s a bitlike the team tournament in that there are a lot of players who feel like“I can put a good week together and win this thing.” I think in doublesit’s kind of the same thing. Nadja and Chelsea have put together a greattournament and a great season in doubles, but again I feel like there are15 teams at least who feel like on a given week they can win the tour-nament. I feel like the fans should really keep an eye out for everybodyin this event.
