Andy’s Say

Spring is sprung, the grass is ris. I wonders where the birdies is? And what a great spring so far, car shows, cruise-ins and pa-rades are everywhere. Two in particular I hope you catch are Richmond Ford’s June 9th Cruise IN & Open House, 4600 West Broad St. (Remember how gracious Ron Kody was to host our 60th anniversary banquet this past January?) Of course next on the list is our own 43rd Annual Car Show and Swap Meet – June 16th – Richmond International Raceway, Gate #2 off Laburnum. We’ve had a good number of you sign up to help this year – thank you! Please bring your old car to display!

A little farther down the road we’ll have our Summer Picnic, Sunday, July 8th at the Elmont VFW Post on Cedar Lane in Ashland, (Rain or Shine.) Club will provide burgers, dogs, rolls & drinks. Please bring a dish to pass and your own table service. Drive your old car too and why not bring a friend or potential new member along? Please RSVP to Alice so we can have a head count. August 5th is our annual Ice Cream Social at the Nash’s. See our website for more details on both these events. On May 4th George Duke, George Field and I made a quick trip to my home town of Dansville, New York to pick up a 1940 Oldsmobile, Series 60 coupe given to me by a family friend. I’ve known the car for nearly my whole life. I had the pleasure of working on it and driving it for sev-eral years in the late 1980s early 1990s. Rumor has it my Grandfather may have sold it new to the Vogt family. It passed down their family tree and after nearly 95,000 miles to me. It was a good trip apart from two flat tires on the trailer and one traffic ticket issued to a member of our party. I won’t say who. We paid visits to Bennett Buick-Chevrolet, (celebrating 90 years as a GM dealership this year,) and Hopkins’ Farms. Both places played large parts in my past life and I was glad to introduce a couple of my new friends to them. They also carry good supplies of used tires. Hopefully you’ll all see the Olds later this summer. On May 3rd we tried something new – our regular meeting was held at Lakeside Farmer’s Mar-ket thanks to Peter Francisco. It was a nice evening outdoors and several of our members ar-rived early to eat at Virginia Barbecue or Cousin Vinny’s Pizza or wherever else. A real high-light was Joe Guckert’s magnificent 1935 Auburn. (I’m going to call it a convertible coupe, cor-rect me if I’m wrong.) It is also supercharged with those neat pipes out the side and all. His wife Debbie says it was always his dream car now it’s a dream come true! Joe, if you’re not using the Porsche as much now maybe???? Well that’s all for me – see you at the shows and further along the way. Andy Fuhrman President – but the clock is ticking!

EDITOR’S RANT Get ready, get set, it’s almost SHOW-

TIME. Yes, you are encouraged to

bring your car to YOUR own car

show. As a matter of fact you can bring

it on the cheap and if your nice, you

might not even have to fill out a regis-

tration form. However, we historically

don’t include our own members’ cars

in the judging competition so that our

paying guest attendees can walk away

smiling with their hot hands wrapped

around precious metal symbolizing

their hard labor restoring or maintain-

ing their prize possession. We, howev-

er do get to enjoy the usual comradeship of our fellow

members and drink soft drinks and Alice and Morris

Cameron’s sandwiches.

Well, it’s happened. The Robbs 1956 Packard Carib-

bean convertible “Pendy” has arrived back in its own

garage after a 5-year professional restoration.

Although all went fairly well it’s just been such a long

time and the details are maddening. We are fairly cer-

tain, mind you, this has been our very first and last pro-

fessional restoration, not only because of the time in-

volved, but for the seemingly endless invoices.

We note with sadness the passing of Bill Stewart, long

time member of the Crater AACA club whom some of

you may know.

Coming up in 2013 is the Lincoln Highway tour that

has been long awaited by some of our members. Spon-

sored by the Lincoln Highway Association the tour will

have two groups. The two groups will leave Times

Square, NY on June 22 and San Francisco on June 23,

2013. Both groups will arrive in Kearny, Nebraska on

June 30 for the arrival ceremony and parade, followed

by the Official LHA Centennial Celebration on July

1. The annual LHA meeting will be in Kearny July 1.

4. Here’s the schedule.

Hello

Everyone!

By

Joe Gagliano

2011 AACA

President

I am truly honored to have been

elected President of AACA and to have

received the confidence of the members

and the Board of Directors.

It has been a great 75 years and last

year was a truly memorable one for

Mary and me, particularly due to our direct

involvement with the 75th Anniversary

event in Louisville, KY. We have

always enjoyed our AACA experience

with national activities as well as having

such a great time at region and chapter

events. National tours are our favorite

and we try to participate on them when

we can, especially the Reliability Tour.

As members since 1972 it has been a

great journey.

Sometime in the past I read something

that stuck with me, it said:

“It’s not the journey that is important;

it’s the people you meet along the way!”

I think it is so true of this great hobby

and especially AACA. We have seen,

ridden in and owned many automobiles

over the years, but it is the people we

remember and appreciate the most.

The hobby is multi-faceted and so diverse,

but it is the people and members

that remain the life blood of the hobby,

while the friendships endure. We continue

to remember and reflect on the

most interesting, special moments and

experiences.

While most clubs continue to worry

about surviving, AACA is positioned to

thrive. We have great members, a great

headquarters staff and leadership, a tremendous

Board and, of course, great

friends.

Let me share with you some thoughts

and goals I presented at the 75th Annual

Meeting in Philadelphia this past February:

Focus on our Strategic Planning-

We have made some great progress

in this area, now is the time to distill it

down to a reasonable and attainable

list of deliverables. It is now time to

implement.

Take Advantage of Technology-

Move forward with the advances

developed into our new web site and

take advantage of this wonderful tool

and the advantages and benefits of the

web.

Continue our Collaborative Efforts

with other clubs and hobby groups-

We are all in this environment together

we need to leverage these relationships

to everyone’s mutual benefit.

Lastly, take a serious look at attracting

and recruiting the next

generation of club leadership-

That means a system and process of

interesting new leaders to come forward

and participate at the divisional

and national levels of the club. We

need to assess our expectations and

requirements to enable talented and

skilled members to seek and fill our

management roles within the club.

The challenge is how do we make this

doable with other family and work related

obligations?

It continues to be a great journey; we

look forward to meeting new people and

making many more friends along the way!

Page 11: BI-MONTHLY CELEBRATING 60 YEARS · CELEBRATING 60 YEARS ... Gate #2 off Laburnum. We’ve had a good number of you sign ... Sometime in the past I read something

As the club prepares for its 60th anniversary and

hosting the 2012 Reliability Tour, I got to thinking;

if getting there is half the fun we should have some

wonderful memories this time next year. As I’ve

had 24 years in this club, I think back on some of

the tours and outings I’ve been on and heard

about. So, as the Statler Brothers sang “Do you

remember these:” Riding to White Post Virginia in

mid-October in a member’s pickup with no heat;

while two former AT&T employees rode in a

Packard with a heater and said THEY were toasty;

A day tour over to the Aviation Museum, pushing

a member’s Pierce Arrow around the parking lot to

get started, then THEY realize they left the switch

off (As it turns out, it was good practice because I

got to do it again 20 years later.); A tour in NC

where a man who was born and raised in Ashland

knew a shortcut back to the motel, and they got

there about two hours after everyone else in 100+

degree heat; Day tours to a member’s house to see

his vast collection and hear the stories behind

them; Day tours where a Model T and bailing

twine are the official tow vehicle.

So as the 60 year mark approaches, those are some

of my memories of touring in our club. P.S. The

names were not used to protect the innocent, but

you know who you are.
