GRACE
Romans 12:1-2
The growth pattern of transformation takes place in our minds. Christ is formed in us as we understand more about God’s Grace and what He has done for us. The more Grace we understand, the more our Details of Life are straightened out; the more our Mental Attitudes are in line with Scripture; we can show forth more a godly Love; and then begin to experience a certain degree of Happiness [Joy] in our lives.

Things We ShouldNot Have Fellowship With:
• 2 Corinthians 6:14 - unbelievers (yoked with)– Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what
fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?
• 1 Timothy 5:22 - sins of others– Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people's sins;
keep yourself pure.
• 2 John 10-11 - false doctrine and evil deeds– If anyone comes to you and does not bring this doctrine, do not receive
him into your house nor greet him; for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.
• 1 John 1:6 - darkness; deceitfulness; untruth– If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie
and do not practice the truth.

fellowship with God– Gifts are given at moment of salvation– But you must recognize which gift or gifts God has given you by
trial and error three things to look for• Comfortable with it
• God blessing its use• Public recognition

Helps In Understanding The New Testament [5]
• Nouns– Case - has to do with the function of the noun as it relates to the
verb and the other parts of the sentence– Greek has four inflected forms and eight functional ideas (cases)
• Nominative - “subject”• Genitive - “possession”• Ablative - “source or separation”• Dative - “indirect object”
• Locative - “location or sphere”
• Instrumental - ‘through/by”• Accusative - “direct object”• Vocative - “direct address”
Helps In Understanding The New Testament [1]
• Conditional clauses - clauses introduced by “if’– Four types
• First class condition - if and it is true - supposition from the viewpoint of reality
• Second class condition - if and it is not true - supposition contrary to fact
• Third class condition - if and maybe it is true and maybe it isn’t true - supposition from the viewpoint of probability
• Fourth class condition - if and i wish it were true, but it isn’t true - supposition from the viewpoint of unreality
Helps In Understanding The New Testament [2]
• Verbs: each verb is expressed in 5 main parts.– Tense (there are a variety of tenses in the Greek. Listed below
are only the main ones, their uses may vary but the basic use is given.)
• Present - action in progress - “I am counseling”
• Future - action in the future -“I will council”• Aorist - action took place in the past - “I counseled”• Perfect - action took place in the past and results continue

Reasons Why God Allows Adversity In The Lives Of Believers
God Allows Adversity [1]
• To Get Our Attention– Sometimes we get frozen in our attitudes.– God needs to shake us up!
• Acts 9:1-9; Psalm 25:1-2• James l:2-4 (reason for shaking us up)

914:12– He loves us enough not to let us get away with sin (Harvest of
Righteousness - Hebrews 12:11)– He wants better for us than we often want for ourselves (Harvest
of Peace - Hebrews 12:11)
God Allows Adversity [3]
• Self—examination– To uncover covert sins/attitudes – Harboring of past anger – Bitterness, fears, self-esteem, inferiority
• Adversity Always Reveals The Real Person– 2 Corinthians 4:17-18; Psalms 26:1-3; 1 Corinthians 11:28; 2
Corinthians 13:5; Laminations 3:40; Psalms 4:14

– Proverbs 3:34; James 14:6; 1 Peter 5:5
– 1 Corinthians 8:1 - Knowledge puffs up (we have a lot of knowledge at Salem - puffed up pride also?)

God Allows Adversity [5]
• God’s Way Of Reminding Us Of Our Weaknesses– *God wants us to understand the nature and pattern of our
weaknesses. 1 John 2:16– Major lust patterns that drive us: Ego; Power; Sexual; Material;
Approbation– **God wants to weaken our dependence upon the flesh, our own
strength, our own intellect, our own beauty which is contradiction to the world’s view
– **We should want God to work through us out of our weaknesses. Hebrews 11:34; Philippians 14:13; 2 Corinthians 12:10; 1 Corinthians 1:27-28; Romans 3:23; 1 John 1:8,10; Matthew 26:41

– *How can God prove His faithfulness unless He rescues us in adversity?
– *We must appropriate scriptural truths in order to experience God’s faithfulness
– *God may not rescue us out of adversity right away or at all but His promise is that He will walk through with us all the way - Psalms 23
– **God wants to expose our trustworthiness but He wants us to see how faithful He is (not how faithful we are)

God)– *Our focus often becomes centered more on the blessing or
vehicle of blessing than on the Blesser Himself. 1 Kings 17:2-16. Psalms 56 - Reliance upon God to purify us
– Hebrews 11: 33 - 37 - Believers became approved of God through experiences of adversity - sifted, sanded their faith

David, Jonathan was pulled in two directions between loyalty to David’s friendship and loyalty to father Saul’s throne.

*Vicarious suffering for another brother = actually taking on some of friend’s adversity/suffering. 1 Corinthians 13:14 - Love is patient, kind, not jealous, bears all things...
God Allows Adversity [10]
• Means of causing us to re-evaluate our priorities– 2 Chronicles 26:5; Ecclesiastes 7:14; Matthew 6:33
*God sends warning winds of adversity and sometimes more adversity follows due to our negative response or the consequences of our own sin.

– Romans 8:29 - To conform us to the likeness of Christ.
– Psalms 107:17 - Rebellion and iniquity bring on adversity.
*What is God trying to protect me from in the future?*If my response is to ignore reasons for adversity, God most likely will bring it on again in order to reveal sin in our lives.
God Allows Adversity [12]
• God’s Way Of Testing Our Works– Matthew 214:27 - Adversity tests how well we are grounded in
the Word of God and His promises.
*God tests and tries us not to see how we will respond but to show us where we are in our walk with Him - to show us approved of God.**What do our children or friends see in us when adversity hits? Do they see us falling apart?
God Allows Adversity [13]
• To Get Us To See The Self - Centeredness In Our Life– “Self”——Most of our motivation is to self– Galatians 2:20——God wants to bring us into identification with
Himself SIN - Taken care of by the Crucifixion of the ‘old man’ (old self)
*We are identified positionally with this*We are not patched up or improved/reformed but transformed positionally by crucifixion of old man. Therefore, because of His Grace and what He has done for us, we ought to respond by putting off the old man (self). Colossians 3:9-10; Romans 7
God Allows Adversity [14]
• Drive Us To The Cross– Romans 1:17 - We live from faith to faith (what has saved us
sustains us).– *The Cross does not just keep us out of Hell but makes us Holy,
blameless, causing us to glorify God.– *God takes care of ‘self’ at the Cross– *A man that is crucified is helpless to help himself. If positionally
we accept the ‘old man’ as crucified, we should be put in a position of total dependence upon God.
*God wants to strip us of our independence*Notes and quotes based on the 6 - tape series “Advancing Through Adversity” by Charles Stanley.**Other notes and related Scripture references prepared by Nick Vitto

Notes by John Winterstein
Prayer Of A Sufferer
One day as I spoke to the Lord in prayer, I gave Him this heart-felt request...That He would remove my deep suffering from me; This heartache, and burden, and test. I just knew I could be of more service to Him If only my strength He’s renew. And my heart would so willingly heed His command, His will and lii work I would do. The answer was clear in His loving response... “Oh my child, if you only could see That this suffering and pain is a part of the plan To help you become more like me! For, if I had not suffered, then you would be lost. My prison of pain set you free! Your salvation was won when I died on the cross, and the guilt of your sin died with me. This trial is not meant to burden you down, But to teach that to me you must cling. This suffering for you is a crown; not a cross, For it’s proof you’re a child of the King! My grace is sufficient to meet all your needs... Just trust me, secure in my love. My strength, in your weakness, becomes stronger still, And peace will, descend from above.
I know very veil of the pain that you bear. My heart aches to see your distress. Just know that I love you and will meet your need, If only in me you will rest. Do not be afraid...I am always with you! You’re safe in the palm of my hand. Whatever your trial, you can be assured; By me it was lovingly planned.”
I raised up my head which so low had been bowed, And the joy in my heart knew no end. “Lord, I praise You so much that You cared about me enough for this trial to send. For I see that it’s just further proof of Your love... Your way is most perfect, indeed! Teach me that the clay to the Potter must yield, And you, Lord, are all that I need.
