SCLATER, M.A., M.B.O.U.

SOME time ago Dr. Richmond, of the United St-ates National Museum a t Washington, sent me some critical notes on the first part of the ‘Systerna Aviuin Bthiopicarutn.’ .4mong them was one 011 ‘the genus Buccunodon, which is usually attributed t o J. & E. Verreiiux, Rev. Mag. Zool. 1855, p. 218, but whicli cannot he found mentioned at that rererence. The earliest mention of the name which I was able to find was that of Hartlaub in his Om. Westafr. 1857, but Dr. Richmond infornied me that i t was to be found in the (‘ Addenda ” to G. R. Gray’s ‘ Catalogue of Genera and Subgenera of ljirds,’ published in 1855.

After wnsiderable enquiry and search in the zoological libraries of this country, I was unable to find any trace

of the “Addenda,” and I wrote to Dr. Richmond agrtin on the subject. He then informed irie he had seen a copy of the “Addenda” in the library of the Carnegie Museum at Pitt.sburg11, and that lie knew of no. other. I then wrote to Mr. Clyde Todd, of the Oarnegie Museu~ii, on the subject, and he very kindly :it once sent me the volume in question to examine. The little book has an, interesting history, as i t is the copy presented by G. R. Gray to John Gould. It resembles in every respect the copies of the Uatalogue uaually to be found in zoological libraries, but contains two extra pages following the title pip and iiitrodnction, containing a second title page and Addenda.

As this additioiial matter seeins to be quite unknown to. bibliographers, and tile Addenda may be of use to systeina tists to settle the types of some of the genera mentioned, it seemed worth while to have the nowly-discovered matter reprinted in frill :-
