What goes in a .bib file?
I Google Scholar fieldtrip time!I Go to scholar.google.com and click ‘Preferences’.I At the bottom, choose to output references in BibTEX
format.I Keep in mind, they aren’t always correct, so double-check
it against your source.

Problems?
I The original BibTEX styles are not pretty.I Most journals have a style sheet you can download.I Find yourself a popular one (linquiry2.bst, sp.bst).I (You can also create your own with the custom-bib
package. We will not do that here.)I Save it under $TEXMF/bibtex/bst/

I Still ugly.I Linguists like author-year citations.I These are handled through the natbib package.I In fact, linquiry2 and sp assume you have natbib loaded.
So, your bibliography will get prettier once we addauthor-year capability.
I natbib redefines the \cite macro, so use \citep or\citet!

Loose ends
I It’s easiest to keep one giant .bib file.I But it gets hard to manage.I You can use a program like JabRef (multiplatform) or
BibDesk (Mac OS) to help you stay organized. You canalso tag items with keywords (“Algonquian”, “General”,“OT”).
