approximately 22% of the total greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. With
the fossil fuel consumption significantly increasing year by year, acceleration of
c limate c hange is ga in ing signi fic ant imp ortanc e rather than the c lima te c hange .

4.3.3Getting familiarEven for one to get famil iar with bicycl ing i t is recommended that you own the r ight
bicycle. Riding someone elses bicycle may not give you the r ight feel and can
sometimes give you false setbacks for reasons like bicycle is too big for me, seat is
very high for me, it is very hard to p ed al, it m ay no t supp ort my we ight, etc .
Initially, for 1-2 weeks it is advised that you bicycle short distances of less than 5 kms
per day to get accustomed to basic acts of b icycl ing l ike changing to r ight gear
po sit ion, mana ging to bic ycle in urba n traff ic, ge tt ing used to b raking, ge tt ing used to
the b ic ycle sad dle, ad justme nt for the r ight sad dle he ight, b ic yc ling o n roug h roa ds,
c limb s, de sc end s, right g ea r shifting , etc .
You m ay g et a feel that t he b ic ycle sad dle is too sma ll for your botto m b ut the sma ll
sa d d le size is no t a worry and it is a ll rig ht. The sad d le is d esigne d to sup p ort m a inly
the pelvic region and not your entire bottom. In some saddles you will also find two
groo ve lines running from the front to the b a c k of the sa d d le. These g roo ves on the
saddle are meant to comfortably posit ion your pelvic region on the saddle. For the
first 1-2 weeks or so you may experience some pain in your bottom but it is not any
c ause to wo rry. The p ain wi ll vanish in a w eek or two o nc e you g et a c c ustom ed to the
sa d d le. In c a se t he p a in pe rsists c on side r using a Ge l Sa d d le Cov er. This sho uld
c onside rab ly red uc e the pa in, if any.
4.4Bicycle2workIf your work place is more than 5 kms., from your home, then one should gradually
prepare towa rd m aking the 1st bic ycle2work trip. You should c hoose to c omm ute for
the f irst t ime on a hol iday, so that you not only take your own t ime to bicycle
comfortably but also look out for the various key requirements required during riding

You should also mark puncture shops on your route along with their shoptimings.

You should choose road which have dividers in the center of the roadsep a ra ting the onc om ing traffic. This wil l ensure sa fety from ove rta king m oto r

You should mark bus stops so that you are alert about the bus tail ing behindyou trying to halt at the bus stop. You should also mark for commonly used
parking spaces on the sides of the road since vehicles may take sudden turns

4. Check for free shifting of gears. In case gears are tight, the derailers may haveaccumulated dirt and requires cleaning. Clean the derailers ti l l i t is freely shifting

your f ingers, gloves and dress may contain enough water to cause permanent
damage to your mobile phones, etc. In case, use of phone is a must for one during
rains, one must secure the mobile phones, etc. in a fully waterproof transparent
enclosure such as from AQUAPAC or one may choose MIL standard products such as
wa terproof m ob ile p hones.
