CONVENTION THEME

Water ~ “Water is life's mater and matrix, mother and medium. There is no life without water.”

~ Albert Szent-Gyorgyi

We have chosen ‘Water’ as our theme, primarily to educate, inform and instil awareness to Tourist Guides

all over the world. Water, whether in abundance or in scarcity plays a large role in individuals’ lives. Water

is vital to a productive and growing economy, directly and indirectly affecting the production of goods &

services in many sectors, one of which is Tourism. We aim to inform the participants of the different

aspects that water can influence us and we will explore its value as a resource to all around the world;

primarily in, food and agriculture, power generation, transport and product development, leisure and

recreational sports and Tourism, as these are the many facets we encompass as guides.

Cape Town has also chosen the theme of ‘Water’ because of its location. It and its surrounding suburbs are

located between two Oceans, namely the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. There are many local Tourist

Guides that make use of the Ocean in a variety of different ways, thereby creating experiences for Tourists.

Our theme then automatically links to our chosen location for the actual Convention venue and the

accommodations, namely the V & A Waterfront area. The V & A Waterfront sits on the water’s edge and is

rich in Culture & History. Our chosen venue for the main convention, the neighbouring Breakwater Lodge

and the Graduate School of Business grounds are rich in their own History and Heritage, which we look

forward to sharing with the participants.

South Africa is one of the few places in the world where one can drink the highest quality drinking water

directly from a tap. Tourist Guides all over the world can be advocates for the prevention of water bottle

pollution and can also encourage consumer confidence in public waters.

There are many initiatives in and around Cape Town with the focus and priority being on ‘Water’. We, as

Tourist Guides can advocate for the preservation, restoration, and transformation of the environmental

and historical heritage associated with the lost water system. One such initiative hopes to enhance the

tourism value of the city through the provision of a link from mountain to sea - both World Heritage sites;

through the provision and promotion of these

sites by activating these spaces with installations,

performance art and site Tourist Guides to tell the

cultural stories associated with the water.

The 6 Blue Flag beaches in and around Cape Town,

as well as the various protected Wetlands and

Estuaries also contribute to our tourism value.

Wine farms are also starting to incorporate water

conservation projects and eco-centres into their

practices, all of which provide Tourist Guides with

endless opportunities.

WHY CAPE TOWN? 12th – 16th January 2015 The Mother City of South Africa, Cape Town lies in one of the

most spectacular scenic settings of any of the world’s principal

cities. The unique icon Table Mountain, flanked by Devil’s Peak,

Lion’s Head and Signal Hill, provides not only a monumental

approach to Southern Africa from the sea; this mountain also

actually fathered the city, and decisively influenced its growth,

climate, layout and general development.

Cape Town, today it is one of the most multicultural cities in the

world, reflecting its role as a major destination for immigrants and expatriates to South Africa. Why choose

Cape Town to host the convention? Because it is the gateway to South Africa, voted “Best Destination in

the World” (TripAdvisor Jan 2012) and “Africa’s Best Travel Destination” (World Travel Awards, July 2010)”,

World Design Capital and host to some of the largest conferences on the globe. Cape Town is the 4th city in

the world, and first city in Africa to be awarded the title “Design Capital” by International Council of

Societies.

These are only some of the reasons why we would like to host the

WFTGA Convention in 2015. Being able to showcase our beautiful

city to our colleagues from around the world would be an honour.

Sharing our rich Culture and Heritage would be a privilege. This all

being well represented through our museums and live depictions

of our old, and more recent history, can be relived and personally

experienced in World Heritage sites such as Robben Island where

Nelson Mandela was incarcerated, the Malay Quarters of the

Bokaap where descendants of slaves still tell of history passed

down by word of mouth, tradition lives on with the firing of the

Noonday gun, and the atrocities of Apartheid are reminded

through the forced removals recorded in the District Six

Museum with visits to areas where people share experiences

recounted to ensure they are never to be repeated.

When you have a better understanding of the history, then the

Township life and steady progress through democracy, development and social cohesion is appreciated

and understood. When interacting with our people and experiencing our modern African culture, with

visits to magnificent successes like Guga S’thebe, Harlem Street, Mzolis place, Nyanga Arts Centre and the

Cafda Centre you will be touched.

This inspirational City is the perfect destination to encourage

networking, the sharing of ideas and the formation of long-lasting

bonds and friendships amongst the convention participants. January

in itself provides the atmosphere of a thriving Tourism city

accompanied by stunning summer weather conditions, our blue flag

beaches and breathtaking views.

We have chosen the V&A Waterfront area for our Conferencing and Accommodation needs. When it

comes to accessibility it offers all modes of transport, restaurants in abundance, five star services,

astounding views, safe and secure environment and all within walking distance.

Our volunteer Tourist Guides will assist in all aspects of the convention, including meet and greets,

hospitality desks, tours and the offering of general and friendly assistance.

We also have fantastic support from our other province, namely KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng and the Eastern

Cape. Their constant support and enthusiasm will continue to strengthen us.

Because it’s Green, Accessible, Walkable, Beautiful... The Central City of Cape Town fits the bill for a conference of this nature because the city already operates

as a 24/7 safe, eco-friendly, “walkable” and sustainable city. The city’s public transport infrastructure

includes an efficient inner-city IRT (Integrated Rapid Transport) service, linking key venues in a swift,

user-friendly way. The Central City will be transformed into a “walkable delegate and conference village”

for the duration of the conference, minimising the conference’s carbon footprint and ensuring, where

possible the safety of all delegates.

A key Central City resource recognised by city

stakeholders is the water springs at the foot of the

mountain which spew more than 2.4 milion litres of

water a day into the storm water system.Through the

Reclaim Camissa project, the City intends tapping into

this rich potentially potable water source to sustain its

citizens. Reclaim Camissa will put into place the

infrastructure to connect people to this resource, with

beautiful parks, pedestrian walkways and urban public

places by celebrating the waters that link the mountain

to the sea and the people to the environment.

It’s Beautiful Called by some, the Fairest Cape, the Cape of Storms, the Cape of Good Hope and the Mother

City. Cape Town lies between two National Heritage sites – Robben Island and Table Mountain, both easily

accessible. The majestic mountain creates the backdrop to the Central City, making it one of the most

beautiful and best loved cities in the world.

CONVENTION VENUE

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BREAKWATER LODGE and

GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS

In the early 1840’s, the British authorities were given

the suggestion that long term British convicts that

had been sentenced to labour could effectively be

used in South Africa as construction labour for

“public works”.

The Capetonians opposed this plan, however the idea of the convict system remained popular in the minds

of the colony leaders and the Home Office because it could contribute vastly to the expansion of the

colony at a lesser expense using free labour. The other advantage was that it gave an opportunity for

offenders to be taught certain skills which could benefit the colonial labour market. The motion of “convict

labour” was passed in 1844.

The original Breakwater Prison was established in 1859 on the premises of the now Breakwater Lodge. Its

purpose was to house the long term male convicts that were to work on the construction of the

breakwater in Table Bay. The colonial system

was mainly concerned with separating groups

of convicts into labour forces made up of men

of the same race. Some races were seen as

less able to respond to rehabilitative

programmes, which led to the construction of

the Treadmill in 1880. It can still be viewed

today and is located at the end of the row of

isolation cells. It was a cruel invention which

was used for petty jail offences. The Industrial

Breakwater Prison was built in 1901 to house

the white male convicts. The design of the prison and enclosed courtyard had a capacity for 352 prisoners.

A portion of the stone courtyard walls still have the original etched sketches done by the prisoners over

the years.

At that time the white community were taught trades according to their class and category. Most worked

as skilled labour at the docks. The Breakwater Prison was only used as a convict station for 10 years.

Between 1911 and 1926 it housed more juvenile offenders.

The building is currently been leased by the University of

Cape Town and the Graduate School of Business along

with the Breakwater Lodge, Protea Hotel.

YOUR HOST CITY: A SAFE CITY Despite perceptions to the contrary, Cape Town is as safe as most international cities, and this is in no small measure due to the efforts of the Central City Improvement District (CCID).

One of the main drivers behind the establishment of the CCID in 2000 was to make Cape Town’s Central City the safest in the country. The vision was to set up effective preventive and reactive security measures through highly visible police officers, mobile vehicles and a bicycle squad twenty four hours a day.

This public/private partnership collects more than R27 million a year from property owners in the city, half of which pays for extra security on the streets of Cape Town’s CBD.

Altogether, 200 security officers keep the streets of the CBD safe, day and night, for all those who work in, live in or visit the city. The dedicated team of security managers and foot officers, who are highly visible, patrol the streets on a 24-hour basis.

Multi-lingual officers All officers are fluent in English. The other languages spoken are Afrikaans and Xhosa. A CCTV surveillance network, paid for by the City of Cape Town, assists in keeping crime at bay. In addition, Cape Town now also boasts a municipal police force. Three hundred and fifty officers have already been trained, 35 of whom are allocated to the central city specifically.

CCID security officers work in a close partnership with the private sector and all law enforcement agencies by communicating on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. The CCID officers work regularly with the SAPS in special operations related to illegal activities in problem buildings, illegal trading, fraud, drug trafficking and prostitution.

This unique partnership has seen a consistent decrease in the crime rate – and to date, since 2000, the CBD has experienced an astounding 85 percent decrease in crime.

A mobile Safety Kiosk, set up last year by the CCID Security Department, which provides visible security in a range of locations, has made a huge contribution to security in the city. The kiosk provides visible policing in key locations, events, hotspot areas and problematic locations. The CCID Security Department has also been expanding the Safety Kiosk programme.

TRAVEL TO AND WITHIN SOUTH AFRICA Delegates to Cape Town mostly arrive and depart by air. Once on the ground, getting around is relatively

simple and convenient, with taxi and hire-cars (and hotel shuttles) being the preferred modes of transport

for international travellers.

Johannesburg (OR THAMBO), Durban and Cape Town have modern airports with facilities to match. Apart

from shops and restaurants, international arrival halls have banks and foreign exchange outlets. Lounges

are available for business-class travellers. All of the airports offer wireless Internet (WIFI) access

throughout the building or designated ‘hot spots’ where coverage exists. There are WIFI facilities at both

the International and Domestic Terminals at Cape Town International Airport.

Public telephones, which operate with either coins or phone cards, are found in all terminals. In the

International Terminal there are cellular (mobile) telephone rental outlets. There is one outlet in Domestic

Arrivals. Cellular telephone coverage is available across the Western Cape.

Departing passengers should allow at least two and a half hours check-in time for all international flights.

An hour and a half is normally adequate for

domestic check-in and this will allow for

sufficient time for parking and check in

processes. Foreign visitors leaving South

Africa may claim back Value Added Tax on

purchases from the VAT refund

administrator at Cape Town International

Airport. The goods and proof of purchase

receipt have to be shown to the

administrator before check-in.
