Chairman’s ForewordWelcome to this year’s Biddulph Festival which has finally come of age, 21 years this year. Starting on the 22nd June

we embark on a variety of arts inspired, community and charity events which continue until the end of July.

I’m Jacky the new Chair of the Biddulph Festival Committee; for the past ten years I have been part of the Biddulph

Festival, standing in the background as Vice Chair and being part of the committee and helping to organise events

throughout the Festival. I’m taking over from the wonderful duo of Eric Cox and Frank Harris who for the last 20

years have been instrumental in making the Festival what it is today – very big shoes to fill!

The new team includes Ant Capostagno (Vice Chair), Emma Edwards (Secretary), Jodie Hancock (Events Co-ordinator)

and Wayne Rogers (Treasurer). A change of Committee has brought fresh ideas as we strive to keep the Festival up to

date. Whilst continuing to drive our core value of celebrating our wonderful community.

The first event of the Festival will be a live local showcase on Friday 22nd June. The official opening of the Festival

starts with the parade through the town centre with the theme of ‘Out Of This World’, on the 30th June at 10.30am.

The parade seems to get bigger and bigger each year.

Of course, there will be the old favourites like Biddulph by the Sea (21st July), it is always good to see Biddulph Town

centre come alive with happy children having fun in the sand and hopefully the sun will be out to shine. The Churches

Together café will be on the steps of the Town Hall every Saturday morning in July serving delicious homemade cakes

and cups of tea.

New for this year, ‘A Harry Potter Themed night’, ‘Peaky Blinders and Gin Night’ and a musical event ‘Hullabaloo

Music and Mayhem’. Please look further into the brochure for more information on these new events and many more

established events.

Last year, nearly 6,000 people attended our Festival events and over £4,000 was raised for various charities, many

thanks for your support last year and over the years.

Please join me in thanking the organisers of the huge number of events that will be running during the Festival, for their

hard work and creativity to make the Festival varied and successful.

Many thanks, to Biddulph Town Council and Staffordshire Moorlands District Council for their backing and also to the

local sponsors for their continued support.

Special thanks to Veronica Brown for producing another impressive brochure and her efforts for supporting the

Festival which is very much appreciated by all.

Lastly, I would like to convey my personal thanks to everyone, both past and present, who has worked so hard to make

the Biddulph Festival so successful, and to you, the people of Biddulph and surrounding areas and those who have

travelled further afield who have given us fantastic support over the years.

So watch this ‘space’, let’s all have a blast at Biddulph Festival, with stratospheric fun and soak up the atmosphere as

you rocket from one event to the next and let’s hope it will be ‘Out Of This World’.

Biddulph Festival 2018 is proud to support our Charity Partners

BIDDULPH LIFELINE

The members of Biddulph Lifeline feel that Automated Electronic Defibrillators should be accessible to as many people in our town as possible. In 2011 we decided that a small working party of people in the town should campaign to provide them. The group became “Biddulph Lifeline”, and the ECG waveform became the group Logo.

The initial task was to raise funds, and our County Councillors at the time were generous in providing money from their community funds. The Town Council has also consistently and generously supported us with regular grants.

At first a number of local businesses were approached and agreed to keep a machine on their premises, but heart problems can happen any time and anywhere. So vandal-proof boxes, fitted with code locks were bought, and West Midlands Ambulance Service now operate a system whereby, in case of emergency, a member of the public could dial 999, and be given the location of the nearest box and the code required to open it.

The next issue was the maintenance and checking of the boxes. It was decided that Lifeline must continue, to make sure that they will always be ready for an emergency.

Putting a Defib in a box is not the end of the story. Batteries become discharged and need to be changed, and the adhesive pads have a “use-by date”. Both items are very specialised and expensive. So, in order to keep our citizens alive, we need to keep our Lifeline project alive. We need to make regular routine inspections of the equipment, and to keep changing and updating the pads and batteries, and we need to keep raising the money to buy these replacements.

The story continues, and you can keep up with it on www.biddulphlifeline.co.uk

Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) has been working to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death (YSCD). CRY supports young people diagnosed with potentially life-threatening cardiac conditions and offers

bereavement support to families affected by YSCD. CRY promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research.

Sadly, in recent years Biddulph has lost 4 young men with undiagnosed heart conditions, Alex Osbourn, David Moss, Mark Hancock and Jordan Burndred. Their families and friends continue to raise funds to arrange screening of the hearts in young people aged between 14 years and 35 years in the Biddulph area. They also raise awareness to support the CRY charity.
