Bielsko-Biała is an exceptional, exquisitely situated town, surrounded by mountains, at the intersection of important communication routes. Bielsko-Biała is not only the capital of the Beskidy Region, but also an important tourist center. This is a city where charming 19th century secession-style buildings alternate with green squares and parks. Bielsko-Biała was once a seat of weavers and wealthy factory owners, lying closer to Vienna than to Warsaw. It was often called the Silesian Manchester because of the cloth produced here and recognizable all over the world, Little Vienna because of its architectural similarity to the capital of Austria, Little Berlin due to fact that German was the only language spoken in the offices of factories and in suburban houses, and finally Little Turin, because it was just here that Italian manufacturer Fiat founded its subsidiary – today’s Fiat Auto Poland. While walking round the town’s center, market squares and narrow, old streets, one cannot help being impressed by the monuments of the past. History has left here magnificent buildings: charming churches, castles, traces of the old city, numerous statues, and many old stone and wooden townhouses from the 17th to the 19th centuries. WELCOME TO BIELSKO-BIAŁA Bielsko-Biała is among the most prosperous cities in Poland. At the same time the cultural development of the town has never been neglected. The Wooden Weaver House conceals the stories of Bielsko clothiers, the 14th century castle is the seat of the Town Museum, the town’s art galleries are famous and crowds of people attend concerts performed at the Bielsko-Biała Centre of Culture. The theatres can also be proud of their success: the one-hundred-year-old Teatr Polski (Polish Theatre) and Teatr Lalek (Puppet Theatre) “Banialuka.” Also located here is the Studio Form Rysunkowych (Cartoon Studio), in which such famous cartoon characters as “Bolek,” “Lolek” and “Reksio” were created. Another great advantage of the town is its proximity to the Beskidy Mountains, which offers the opportunity of appreciating the beauty of the mountain landscapes and encourages one to enjoy outdoor activities all the year round. The multitude of sport and recreational facilities; the excellent conditions for water sports – sailing, canoeing, windsurfing – on Żywiec Lake and Międzybrodzie Lake; the glider school on the slope of Żar Mountain; the numerous hiking trails; the cosy hostels; the tobogganing runs; the network of ski lifts and the cable railway – all this makes for a town and region of exceptional beauty and interest.

STUDENT LIFE - UNIVERSITY ACTIVITIESStudent life means more than just studying. Attending lectures and classes at the institution of higher education gives students many opportunities to develop their individual interests and to check their progress both in competition and in cooperation with fellow students who often share similar passions. One of the university priorities is to work for the students good to be understood in the broadest sense. From its very inception, the university has succeeded in establishing relations with students based on partnership. The authorities of the university try to make the students’ role in shaping the institution as great as possible. One sign of these efforts is the students’ participation in many committees which have a crucial influence on the functioning and development of the university. Students also have the opportunity to express their opinions both directly, at meetings with the authorities and the research and teaching staff of the university, and indirectly, in the form of evaluations conducted at the end of each semester. The opinions expressed are meticulously analyzed, and the “students’ say” has a significant influence on the university organization and the teaching process.

The university not only works to ensure a high level of teaching but also provides excellent conditions for wide-ranging development of students’ interests. For this purpose the university sponsored numerous guest lectureships and student clubs. They can also take part in extracurricular programme of research circles. Apart from these, the students can realise their artistic talents in the events such as WSEH-Art organised in Oscar Wilde Pub.

One of the statutory tasks of UEH along with teaching is taking care of students’ health and their physical education. An attractive range of PE classes is designed for this purpose. The range includes various forms of sports activities (gym and fitness club with different classes such as aerobics, step, ricochet, team games) and a variety of extra classes (volleyball, basketball and handball).

The University of Economics and Humanities is the sole FEDE examination centre in Poland. FEDE (Fédération Européenne des Ecoles) is a prestigious organization concentrating schools and colleges from Western Europe. After completing studies at UEH the graduates have the opportunity to receive two diplomas: the Polish degree diploma of “licencjat” and “magister” which are recognized in Poland, and the FEDE diploma honoured by employers in the European Union. Under the patronage of FEDE there are International Language Contests and The Contest of EU Knowledge organized every year.

The University of Economics and Humanities is a member of the Examination Centre of TELC

(The European Language Certificates). This is a system of examinations created according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: learning, teaching and assessment by the European Council. The Institution is an accredited TOEIC ( Test of English for International Communication). TOEIC tests cover all levels of fluency and can be used either for final examinations or as placement tests. Moreover, TOEIC is recognized worldwide by many business institutions.

The TELC Certificate can be gained after passing the written and oral exams (covering different levels of fluency), which checks language skills with an emphasis on communication skills.

Page 5: Bielsko-Biała is an exceptional, exquisitely situated town, surrounded by mountains, at the intersection of important communication routes. Bielsko-Biała

The TELC Certificate can be gained after passing the written and oral exams (covering different levels of fluency), which checks language skills with an emphasis on communication skills.

TELC language examinations are organized by WBT partners, TELC Examination Centers in Poland and many other European countries. The written part is checked by computer in the Central Examinations Office in Frankfurt am Main. However, the letters part of the exam is marked at two stages by two different examiners. The oral part is evaluated by the licensed examiners in the institutions that conduct the exam.

At present the university holds exams in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian and Russian.

After passing the TELC examination one receives the certificate with a mark that confirms language fluency. The certificates are printed and sent from the Central Examinations Office in Germany. The TELC Certificates are known and honoured throughout the European Union. The institution is also a partner of ETS Global and a

certified Testing Centre for TOEIC, TOEFL, WiDAF. The institution takes an active part in the cultural life

of the town and the region. One sign of this commitment is co-organization of the Festival of Science (Festiwal Nauki), the idea of which is to present the scientific and cultural advantages of the Beskidy Region to its inhabitants.

ECTS

The growth of student exchange among domestic and foreign institutions was one reason for implementing new strategies of operation and development of programmes and schemes in higher education. New regulations encompass, among other things, creating common principles of recognizing diplomas awarded in foreign institutions and also taking into account the full period of studies done abroad.

For that purpose, on the initiative of the European Commission the European Credit Transfer System (known as ECTS) was drawn up. The ECTS allows transparent presentation of the rules for studying and getting credits abroad. The full recognition of studies means that the period during which a studies abroad or in any other Polish school are treated like the same period spent at the “mother” institution (together with transferring all credits and examinations). This is independent of differences in programs of study that may occur. The basis of ECTS consists of three elements:•Information about the schedule of classes and student’s achievements,•Agreement between partner schools and the student,•Using ECTS to determine how much work the student has done to get certain credits.

The ECTS credit points are measured as a numerical value (from 1 to 60), which is assigned to certain modules and is proportional to the student’s work input needed to receive credit in a course. The points reflect how much work the student has to do to in each subject compared with the “overall work” that is required to complete the whole academic year at the given department. The ECTS grading scale takes into account all forms of classes: lectures, laboratory classes, non-laboratory classes, seminars, tutorials, examinations and others.

The ECTS credit points are a relative but not absolute measure of the “amount of work” required from a student because they specify what part of the “overall work” required in a given academic year equals work done in a certain subject in the department that awards the points. The student is obliged to get 60 points during the whole academic year, which is about 30 points for each semester and 20 points for a trimester. ECTS provides reasonable (as regards the required amount of work) selection from the class schedule while studying abroad or in another domestic school. Receiving the appropriate amount of points provides the basis for completing the academic year. ECTS does not eliminate the grade scale which is used to evaluate the quality of the student’s work.

Page 7: Bielsko-Biała is an exceptional, exquisitely situated town, surrounded by mountains, at the intersection of important communication routes. Bielsko-Biała

These elements in practice correspond with three key documents:•Information package - containing general information about the school, academic calendar, administrative structures and procedures, the description of classes and practical information for students (description of the town, accommodation, health care system, recreation and student life).•Learning agreement - an agreement between student and partner schools (the school that is sending the student and the school that is welcoming the student), which is signed before the student’s going abroad. In this agreement the student agrees to take a certain program of classes chosen from the offering of the welcoming school. Under the terms of the agreement the welcoming school is obliged to give the student the opportunity to take part in the chosen classes, while the sending school confirms its agreement to authorize all the student’s credits according to ECTS.•Transcript of credits - it describes the student’s achievements before and after the period of studying abroad. In this transcript all modules taken by the student are listed, together with the amount of points and the marks received. A copy of the transcript should be given to each party, i.e., sending school, welcoming school and the student. The grading scale with reference to ECTS

ECTS GRADE DEFINITION DOMESTIC GRADE
