We take pride in identifying the best emerging filmmakers, and work hard to support them all year round, as they grow their careers and make more incredible films

Our 700+ voters, jurors and committee members are past winners, nominees and other highly experienced professionals from the British film industry
Our careful, rigorous and fair process allows us to highlight the best in UK filmmaking, and to champion diversity of talent in our nominations, voters and juries
We also reach millions of film, culture and art fans every year, both in the UK and internationally

WHERE THE INDUSTRY FIND THE NEXT BIG THING
Films and talent first spotted at BIFA tend to go on to big things. In fact, if you’ve heard of them, they’ve probably come through BIFA
We were the first to award films like The King’s Speech, Moonlight, The Favourite, For Sama and Rocks before they went on to BAFTA and Oscar glory
Our voters spotted Ben Whishaw, Emily Blunt, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Letitia Wright, Andrea Riseborough, John Boyega, Florence Pugh and Sam Adewunmi years before receiving nominations from other awards bodies

HONOURING THE BRIGHTEST AND BEST
In addition to our competitive categories, we present honorary awards to some of the giants of British film upon whose shoulders many of us stand
The Richard Harris Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Film has been presented to Judi Dench (2018), Kristin Scott Thomas (2019) and Glenda Jackson (2020)
Other honorary awards have been presented to the likes of Gary Oldman, Naomie Harris, Femi Oguns, Benedict Cumberbatch, Horace Ové, Amanda Nevill and many other leading actors and industry figures

THE CEREMONY
THE BUILD-UP
Awards night begins, of course, with the red carpet
There is no VIP area at BIFA: nominees, presenters, partners and high-profile film industry guests walk the red carpet and mingle at the champagne reception which precedes the show
Beautiful photography and live interviews from house crews and wire press are online in minutes
Our industry partners have access to this content and can create their own. They can also help us dress areas of the room, brand bars or provide nibbles, amongst a host of other options

THE DINNER
After the red carpet and reception, 700+ guests make their way to the ceremony room
The two-course dinner (at which partners can provide wine, water, chocolates or even the meal) is a fantastic opportunity to host guests and get everyone settled in for the ceremony
It’s also a chance for nominated talent to say hello to one another before everything kicks off
No press are allowed in the room so our house photographers capture exclusive, intimate moments between guests

THE SHOW
The moment everyone’s been waiting for!
The ceremony itself is short, sharp and funny: our host delivers an opening monologue and shepherds us through the award categories
Past hosts include Jennifer Saunders, Richard Ayoade, Mark Gatiss, Chris O’Dowd, Russell Tovey, Aisling Bea and, in 2020, Tom Felton
The awards are presented by stars such as Christian Slater, Julie Walters, Colin Farrell, Jodie Whittaker, Jason Isaacs, Martin Freeman, James Norton, Alicia Vikander, Priyanka Chopra and Zendaya

THE PARTY
Our ceremony afterparty is legendary
An extra 400 guests arrive at 10pm, just as the DJs hit the decks. The party goes on until the early hours
Despite its high profile, BIFA has retained a relaxed and informal atmosphere. Winners, nominees and presenters stay to celebrate with other guests
There are opportunities for partners to get involved with the entertainment and hospitality of guests, using the screens around the room, photobooths, gifting, and other experiences

SUPPORTING THE INDUSTRY
BIFA SPRINGBOARDA year-round programme for emerging filmmakers. Providing much needed support and training to help BIFA’s debut filmmakers reach their full potential
We provide continuing professional development, networking, mentoring and a space for filmmakers to come together to work and collaborate
With the help of more partners, we want to increase the support we are able to offer to these extremely talented and promising filmmakers and expand our offering to include the exceptional heads of department nominated in our craft categories each year
EQUALITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSIVITY TRAINING
All BIFA voters and jurors undergo industry-first training sessions in recognising and mitigating against unconscious bias in their decision-making processes. Our training has been rolled out across the screen industries and to other awards bodies, including BAFTA
This year, the programme expands to offer training in Anti-Bullying and Harassment and in Fair Recruitment and Inclusivity in the Workplace
MENTORINGWe’ve just launched a mentoring programme, with an open application process for mentees
Springboard participants can also sign up, both to be mentored, and to mentor newer entrants to the industry
PROMOTING INDEPENDENT FILM YEAR ROUND

We want to spread the word about British independent film to new audiences
That’s why we’re committed to raising the profile of BIFA and the films and filmmakers it celebrates to under 25s in particular
By offering approachable expertise, using talent-led content and maximising the impact of the Awards, we are inspiring the next generation of independent filmmakers
ALWAYS-ON MARKETING
Thanks to funding from the BFI, we have been promoting independent film and cinemas as they have begun to recover from the pandemic
This support will continue until at least March 2022 via our always-on social campaign, boosted by media buy and original, talent-led content, and anchored by the new BIFA kitemark, extending our ability to promote new independent film beyond the Awards
