THE PASTOR’S PAGE
As I write this, it is raining outside. Normally a cloudy, wet day would seem a bit depressing. But not today! The temperature is predicted to reach sixty degrees (which should eradicate the last of the snow piles). I guess it’s all a matter of perspective.
It is much the same with the season of Lent. Normally self-denial and introspective self-examination; taking an honest look at my habits and priorities and identifying changes and im-provements that are called for would not be my idea of a good time. But when they are a part of preparing for and looking ahead to Easter, it can seem a bit more palatable.
When Jesus first broached the idea of his suffering death and resurrection with his disciples, they were shocked. Despite the religious leaders challenging Jesus’ authority, his ministry seemed to be flourishing. Everywhere he went crowds would gather to hear him speak and/or seek his healing. Besides, Jesus had just revealed to them that he was, indeed, the long-awaited Messiah. Suffering was not something they associated with that role.
When Jesus told them, during the Last Supper/Seder Meal/Passover celebration that he knew one of them would betray him and hand him over to the authorities and they would all desert him, it seemed unbelievable to the disciples. But, before the evening was over, it would come to pass.
Because we are so familiar with the events of Holy Week, it is easy for us to miss how many times there is a glimmer of hope; the possibility that God (or someone) will intervene and stop the ridicule, rejection and suffering Jesus is enduring.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Peter draws his sword and is ready to defend Jesus
But Jesus censures him and stops him
While Jesus is suffering the inquisition of the Sanhedrin, Peter is nearby and no less than three times has an opportunity to declare his belief in and support of Jesus
But each time he denies any association with Jesus
Pilate realizes that Jesus has been falsely accused; he could free Jesus
But he doesn’t want to incite the crowd—especially during Passover
Pilate suggests making Jesus the token Jewish prisoner freed by Rome during Passover
But the crowd shouts, “Crucify him!”
Even the taunts of the soldiers and witnesses of the crucifixion give voice to what Jesus’ supporters were hoping: “You saved others; why won’t you save yourself?”, “If you are God’s chosen one, why isn’t God saving you?” and “He is calling for Elijah; let’s see if he will come and save him.”
But Jesus refuses to defend himself, there is no divine intervention and he even asks God to forgive his tormentors.
By the time the centurion declares, “Truly this man was the Son of God” and Joseph of Arima-thea and Nicodemus (both wealthy and powerful men who could have used their influence to come to Jesus’ rescue) arrive on the scene, Jesus has already been declared dead. As they place Jesus’ body in a borrowed tomb and the Romans seal the entrance, it seems all hope is gone. Whatever dreams or expectations Jesus’ followers had had, died with him. They won-dered if they would be the next ones to face crucifixion. Their grief and fear obscured any thought of resurrection.
But resurrection would come! And it would put all the suffering, rejection, false accusations and undeserved execution into perspective.
Hopefully our celebration of the Resurrection will make our “Lenten journey” worthwhile and remind us how God can work for good even in the worst of circumstances.
Let’s strive to keep a positive perspective! Pastor Gregg Mayberry

This program coincides with the 2018 Great Michigan Read program about the book, X: A Novel by Ilyasah Shabazz, daughter of Malcolm X, and by Kekla Magoon. Renee Chodkowski, aka “The Great Foodini,” provides a culinary look at traditional soul food from the Mal-colm X era with some fun tips and tricks. She will share recipes that are reminiscent of Depression-era soul food. Join us for a fun-filled evening as we learn how people of the 1940s got creative with food rationing, and taste samples of food that Malcolm X may have eaten growing up. Open to teens and adults. Call to register: 248-524-3534 or visit troypl.org/calendar. KYND is a joint effort of many civic and government representatives, including Troy-area Interfaith Group, bringing together the diverse members of our community to promote greater understanding of our neighbors, who may differ from one another in a broad range of ways. All our books featured this month are Adult Fiction Books. Most of the following authors will be familiar to family and historical fiction read-ers. We add two Barbara Delinsky books to our collection. The Secret Between Us & Family Tree deal with secrets within a family and will keep you guessing to the very end. The Secret Wisdom of the Earth also deals with a family inci-dent that will haunt you. Nancy E. Turner writes another winner taking us back in time to the American Revolution. My Name is Resolute will help you understand how this country be-gan. Another historic fiction title, Dream When You’re Feeling Blue by Eliza-beth Berg, will take you back to World War II. The Patron Saint of Liars by Ann Patchett, The God of Animals by Aryn Kyle, Comfort Food by Kate Jacobs, Home Song by LaVyrle Spencer, Picture Perfect by Jodi Picoult all deal with modern families and how they face various adventures in their lives. Breakfast with Budda by Roland Merullo is an unusual novel sharing a life not available in many fiction books. We end with 3 books dealing with mysteries: Past Perfect by Susan Isaacs, Hour Game by David Baldacci, and Murder at the Book Group by Maggie King. All will be great reading at the end of our winter season!!!! HAPPY READING!!!

end). Due to their size difference, there are several price categories from which to
choose. People are welcome to sponsor a bell; go together with your bible study groups, committees,
