“Y ou Can’t Mess With Mama!” — Marie Knight, IH Mississippi Valley Blues Festival 2008 So many blues fests and too much fun! At the 25th Annual Chicago Blues Festival it was big- ger and better than ever in beauti- ful Grant Park on the shores of Lake Michigan. Thursday’s theme “Catfish Blues” was a day with Jimmy Burns and his blues at the Mississippi Juke Joint stage and over on the Front Porch Sugar saw another fabulous show with Pinetop and band—Big Eyes, Steady Rollin’, Bob Stroger and Kenny Smith plus what a joy to see Little Willie Littlefield back in town on the Louisiana stage. For the evening Louis Jordan’s tribute featuring who else but the blues jumper Duke Robillard and Red Holloway was out of this world. The closer was Johnny Winter wsg James Cotton. The next day’s theme - “Sweet Home Chicago” with the Queen of the Blues— Koko Taylor headlining the fest and opening up for her was blues legends Cicero Blake Sugar Pie DeSanto, Eddy Clearwater, Lonnie Brooks, Jimmy Johnson, Ronnie Baker Brooks, Otis Clay and Billy Branch. Saturday’s “Let The Good Times Roll” kicked off with Chick Rogers at the Crossroads Stage and then the Banjo Project with Otis Taylor, Don Vappie and Guy Davis. Sugar, Junior & hundreds of blues fans loved dancing to Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm at the Jukejoint Stage. Later that night they followed the Koko Taylor Celebrity Foundation Blues Club Crawl Bus to three dif- ferent clubs with Koko on board as well as her older sister Aunt Vi! Needless to say it was a “Wang Dang Doodle!” But boy didn’t it rain on Sunday – after a gospel opening with the Victory Travelers and Marie Knight & Dave Keyes, Sugar had to take cover. It was “Everyday I Have the Blues” as its theme with the King of the Blues –BB King headlining and opening for him was Karen Carroll, Charlie Love, Lurrie Bell, Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Little Willie Littlefield. Before BB began he thanked Buddy Guy, Koko Taylor and Lonnie Brooks for all the doors that they have opened for the blues. It was a beautiful evening and afterwards BB joined Buddy at his club Legends before taking off down that long blues highway. Next up was Blues on the Fox—downtown Aurora, IL, was next with a picture perfect week- end featuring Eddy Clearwater, Elvin Bishop, Corey Harris, Bettye LaVette, Marcia Ball, Kenny Wayne Shepherd wsg Hubert Sumlin and Willie Big Eyes Smith. It was wall to wall people with nowhere to move and obviously a larger venue is needed to accommodate all those hungry blues fans. Thank-you Paula Gotcha!
