Whatever your opinion is about global warming, it's been a very warm year. I know and try not to pollute or harm our environ- ment but tend to think as my scientist son that the earth has been warming since the end of the ice age. My point being, not to start an argument, but to illustrate it's hard to get in the mood to hunt when the temperature is in the 80's! That opinion was expressed a number of times last week at the BGH October General Meeting. There weren't a lot of hunting reports even though the Missouri archery season is almost a month old. Jim Mraz presented a very interesting program about Boone & Crockett and Safari Club International scoring of big game animals. He explained the different approaches and systems they use. He had a nice display of heads and racks and demonstrated the proper technique to score them. There was much interaction and a great question and answer session after his fact filled presentation. We are really lucky to have a member with such interest and expertise in a field we all hope to use as big game hunters. Just remember all the game we take is a trophy no matter how large or small. Jim, as most of you know, scores all of our deer and turkey contests. If you have a trophy you want to enter in the Big Buck Contest, give Jim a call to make an appointment. Thanks, Jim, for another wonderful program and everything you do for BGH! Remember we have a new category this year with the legalization of use of a crossbow for everyone. As you will see in this newsletter we already have some successful members. Many of you are headed west or have already come back from the mountains and foothills. Hopefully you were successful. You may feel like I used to after three months of guiding up in the mountains that you have had enough winter and snow. The great thing about our country is that we can travel in a few hours anywhere we want and have the freedom to do so. In a few weeks we will be voting in maybe the most important election we will ever see. You may not like any of the candidates but remember to go and vote! I feel the most important thing is that the next President will name at least two new Supreme Court Judges in their term which could change the direction and the history of our great nation forever! It's your right, duty and privilege! Whatever your decision, Vote! Camp Notes November 2016 BIG GAME HUNTERS NEWSLETTER Donald L. Howell OFFICERS PRESIDENT Donald L. Whatever your opinion is about global

warming, it's been a very warm year. I know

and try not to pollute or harm our environ-

ment but tend to think as my scientist son that

the earth has been warming since the end of

the ice age. My point being, not to start an

argument, but to illustrate it's hard to get in the

mood to hunt when the temperature is in the 80's! That opinion was expressed a number of

times last week at the BGH October General Meeting. There weren't a lot of hunting reports

even though the Missouri archery season is almost a month old.

Jim Mraz presented a very interesting program about Boone & Crockett and Safari Club

International scoring of big game animals. He explained the different approaches and

systems they use. He had a nice display of heads and racks and demonstrated the proper

technique to score them. There was much interaction and a great question and answer

session after his fact filled presentation. We are really lucky to have a member with such

interest and expertise in a field we all hope to use as big game hunters. Just remember all the

game we take is a trophy no matter how large or small. Jim, as most of you know, scores all

of our deer and turkey contests. If you have a trophy you want to enter in the Big Buck

Contest, give Jim a call to make an appointment. Thanks, Jim, for another wonderful

program and everything you do for BGH!

Remember we have a new category this year with the legalization of use of a crossbow for

everyone. As you will see in this newsletter we already have some successful members.

Many of you are headed west or have already come back from the mountains and foothills.

Hopefully you were successful. You may feel like I used to after three months of guiding up

in the mountains that you have had enough winter and snow. The great thing about our

country is that we can travel in a few hours anywhere we want and have the freedom to do

so.

Take Better Deer Pictures!

How many people have seen your mount of last year’s buck hanging in your

basement?

How many people have seen your picture of last year’s buck on Facebook, Text

Messages, emails or just on your phone?

The truth is, 99% of your friends will only ever know of your buck from photos. That

makes the pictures you take of your deer more valuable than anything else!

Use these simple steps to create the perfect “Hero Shot” to show off to you family

and friends, at work or a picture appropriate enough to frame and put on the wall!

1. Wipe Off Any Blood. Carry and old rag to keep the picture from looking like a

crime scene. And stick the tongue back in the mouth!

2. Get Out of the Tailgate. No one’s interested in the roll of barbed wire you have

been hauling around since last fall. Field Pictures make the best pictures (no houses,

cars, etc.)

3. Sit Beside or Behind the Deer. Never straddle a buck or stand next to it hanging from the rafters

4. Focus on the Animal. Make it known your buck had 2 kickers and a broken left brow. (Skyline the antlers or keep the

background free of too much debris)

5. Clear Away Obstructions. Don’t let corn stalks or switch grass get in the way of your grin.

6. Get Eye-Level. The most interesting parts of the pictures are lost if you are too high or too

low.

7. Turn on the Flash. Most mornings and evenings lack the proper lighting for a quality photo

8. Don’t Zoom In. Using zoom hurts picture quality, so get closer to your subject and fill the

frame!

9. Take Tons of Photos. It’s hard to see what turns out in the field, so shoot until your body

can’t tolerate anymore, then take 15 minutes of more pictures!

Following these 9 steps will make all the difference when showing off your buck!

“In Sport, method is

everything. The More skill the method calls for, the higher its yield of emotional stir and satisfaction, the higher its place must be in a sportsman’s scale of values” — Roderick Haig-Brown Big Game Hunter Pictures

“It occurs to me that stumps would be excellent places to ensconce certain people. Politicians for instance. Maybe we should draft a law requiring everyone to sit on a stump at least one day a year. It would be civic obligation, like jury duty. It would be therapeutic, a societal authorization to do nothing. Of course, there wouldn’t be enough stumps to go around. Legitimate substitutes would include logs, rocks, streambanks, mountaintops and the lower branches of trees. The number one rule, however, would remain in force: Stick to your stump. — Charles Fergus
