“My daily quest is to make sure that our team is focused on the details that matter to you, our guests. I listen and read guest comments to know what’s important to you. For example we know that daily maid service sets us apart from vacation rentals without professional management. So we are really focused on keeping your villa or townhome super clean and orderly. Also we hear all the time that guests appreciate our landscaping staff for their loving care of the flowering plumeria trees, bougainvillea, and other tropical foliage that just grow and grow!Of course I like meeting people from all over the U.S. and from around the world. And I always share my little slice of Hawaii especially the farmer’s markets and the beaches that I enjoy with my family.”

Dan joined the Classic Resorts team eleven years ago soon after moving to the Big Island from the Mainland. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in economics.

“As I welcome guests and get them oriented to Mauna Lani, I also like to make them aware of things to do around the Island. I’m a good resource since I was born in Hilo, raised in Waimea, and went to school in Honolulu. Now that I’m back home on the Big Island, I appreciate it even more. First time guests of course have a check list of the major attractions that all visitors need to experience. The volcano, a luau, a sunset cruise. Return guests have done those activities and often want to know where the local people go. One place that local people like to eat is the Hawaiian Style Café in Waimea. You might have to wait in line but that’s a chance to meet other people and learn about other local favorites!”

“I especially like to interact with guests and tell them about my favorite places around the Big Island. If they’re going to Hilo, I’ll say “be sure to stop at Ken’s House of Pancakes!” Or in Kona I encourage them to taste a shave ice from a shop on Alii Drive. We have a beautiful sandy beach here at Mauna Lani but sometimes a guest will ask me about beaches away from the resorts. So I guide them to a beach I like between Puako and Hapuna. – I don’t even know if it has a name! One big improvement I’ve seen is the addition of The Shops at Mauna Lani. This gives all of us a close-by place to buy groceries, pick up a snack and just stroll around doing some window shopping.”

Your aerial trekking course explores a storied mauka (mountain) forest, which spans a river bed on the slopes of the extinct volcano, Kohala. Zipping from tree to tree, you fly past the plants of Hawaii, native kukui trees and fragrant gingers, blossoming ohia shrubs and magnificent eucalyptus. Below you stretch remnants of old taro terraces, which once formed the agricultural foundation of Hawaiian society.

You may also catch signs of the Kohala Ditch, an irrigation canal completed in 1906 to provide water for the sugar plantations that formerly surrounded Kohala’s main towns, Hawi and Kapaau.

Hawaii’s volcanoes are different from most volcanoes around the world. In other places when a volcano erupts people flee for their lives. In Hawaii we get in our cars and drive down to the lava flow to check it out. In many ways they are gentle volcanoes; they are volcanoes with aloha. Unlike 90% of the earth’s volcanoes, which are located at the boundaries of tectonic plates, Hawaii is smack dab in the middle of a plate. It is this difference, the location and source of Hawaii’s magma, which makes our volcanoes relatively viewer-friendly.

Hawaii’s volcanoes are located in the middle of the Pacific Plate. Like all tectonic plates that form the crust of the earth, the Pacific Plate is moving – inching ever so slightly to the northwest. From deep in the earth a “hot spot” of magma rises upward and melts through the plate.

When the volcanoes are close to the hot spot, like Kilauea, they are very active and growing. As they get pulled away from the hot spot, the volcanoes become less and less active until finally, they are completely severed from the hot spot and become extinct. With waning activity and finally extinction, these volcanoes sink, erode, and slough away as landslides. Finally sinking underneath the ocean surface again, they become seamounts.
