Big Picture Planning Why is the Campbelltown Road upgrade required? NSW government is planning for the future. South West Growth Centre is expected to house around 300,000 additional residents in around 110,000 dwellings. Leppington Major Centre is planned to be a key focal point for the community. South West Rail Link is providing new stations at Edmondson Park and Leppington. Campbelltown Road is one of two main roads connecting the proposed Edmondson Park Train Station and future local road network. A logical network of roads is needed to distribute traffic and provide alternative routes. Population growth and annual traffic increases in the South West Growth Centre will create congestion on Campbelltown Road if this upgrade doesn’t take place. Draft South West Subregional Strategy 2007 noted: SW D1.2.1… ’implement plans to extend and upgrade the road network in the South West Growth Centre, to support the forecast 100,000 dwellings, including upgrades/extensions to… Campbelltown Road…’ SW D2.4.3 ‘…projects to remove ‘pinch points’ at places on the network that experience high levels of congestion, including Campbelltown Road…’ The Campbelltown 2025 Looking Forward (2004) document noted: 2.2 What are the issues the Community see as impacting on our Future? Roads - Traffic congestion seen as a result of population growth not being matched with adequate infrastructure. 3. Key Influences that will help to shape the City’s future NSW Government – Investment in Infrastructure. West – East links from Bringelly/Camden to Campbelltown. New urban release areas in South Western Sydney. 4. Key Themes for Change Better integration of transport and new development. Roads, transport and accessibility. MAJOR CENTRES

WALKABLE NEIGBOURHOODS

A key element of the urban form is the walkable neighbourhood which is the area within a 400 metre radius from a local shop (or group of shops) or from another community focus (eg a community centre with a bus stop). Walkable neighbourhoods are clustered around mixed use main street retail centres shown as red on the plan. These centres include housing, community facilities, shops for daily convenience etc.
