Big Pipeline Crossing Protection Project for Williams on the Guadalupe River, South of
Victoria, TX. (near the harbor)
1.3 Million DollarsTook 3 crews 6 weeks to build!!
Summer 2005
• Bank erosion (lateral erosion) has exposed over 100 ft of pipeline, threatening pipeline integrity
• Co-designed by River Research & Design, Inc. & Submar, Inc. Contractor: Submar, Inc.
• Not a flashy stream, stays on the flood for months at a time
• Bed material: sand-silt-clay, not incised, rural.
• Pool-riffle-pool regime, slope < 1%
• Average width 100-150 ft, 10-18 ft tall banks

PRE-PROJECT-Looking US at the exposed pipeline, flow splits around island. Split flow always brings its own
challenges!!

PRE-PROJECT-Looking DS at the exposed pipeline.
6 MONTHS LATER-Looking US. Bendway Weirs managing the thalweg.
6 MONTHS LATER-Guadalupe River-Mark Bordelon -3-14-2006
Very hot down in Victoria, TX {103 degrees}. This was the
coldest day, it hit 112 degrees some days. We cut several
hundred willow branches & small trunks (3/4” to 1.5” butt
diameter, 6’ to 8 ft long, soaked them for 10 days, then
planted & watered them in (July-Aug time frame).

CONSTRUCTION-The constructed soaking pool for the willows. Pumps kept it full. Willows were cut & soaked for 10 days.

CONSTRUCTION-Looking US. LPSTP in. Prepping bank for willows
CONSTRUCTION-Guadalupe River @ Pipeline-John Lewis-July 2005
CONSTRUCTION-Looking down slope @ row of willows above LPSTP, 2/3 in ground, 1/3 out. Riprap above willows.

PRE-PROJECT Guadalupe River @ Williams Pipeline-Derrick-Oct 1, 2004
PRE-PROJECT-Looking DS at the exposed pipeline, thalweg impacting bank.
26 MONTHS LATER-Looking DS @ the protected pipeline, thalweg redirected & willow growth 8 to 16 ft tall after 2 years.

PRE-PROJECT Guadalupe River @ Williams Pipeline-Derrick-Oct 1, 2004
PRE-PROJECT-Looking DS at the exposed pipeline. Debris on pipeline, thalweg flowing under pipe.
26 MONTHS LATER-Looking DS @ the protected pipeline, great willow growth US & DS of pipeline right-of-way (hydraulic roughness).
26 MONTHS LATER-Guadalupe River @ Williams Pipeline-Derrick 11-6-07
26 MONTHS LATER-Looking DS, good sediment deposition on stone under dense 8 to 16 ft tall, 2”- 4” diameter willows.
26 MONTHS LATER-Guadalupe River @ Williams Pipeline-Derrick 11-6-07
26 MONTHS LATER-Uphill from large willows, great deposition on top of riprap
