PENN STATE MASTER GARDNERS PROGRAM CORNER

Declares the patio garden of Mountain View Apartments &

The Big Spring Senior Center a Master Garden

Goldenrod Solidago spp. – Garden Gem or Foe

By Carol Glasgow Penn State Extension Master Gardener of Cumberland County

Is it a weed or a garden gem? If you chose the former perhaps learning goldenrods virtues will change

your mind. First of all goldenrod is not causing your allergies, ragweed is the culprit for fall sneezes.

This lovely fall-blooming, pollinator friendly native plant has a rich history of usefulness.

Native Americans and the Chinese both valued the plant medicinally for wound healing, although mod-

ern science does not prove its effectiveness. British folklore mentions goldenrod as a directional guide to

find gold and silver treasure. It was also thought to mark hidden springs and used as a divining rod.

Goldenrod can be used in dried floral craft, dye making and as a cut flower in arrangements. According

to Victorian era gardeners goldenrod symbolizes precaution.

Goldenrod is an easy to grow perennial that tolerates poor dry soil. It has no serious diseases or pests.

The garden will be getting Solidago sphacelata ‘Golden Fleece’ to go with the other variety already es-

tablished. This end of season bloomer puts forth a showy display of golden flowers and provides a nutri-

tious feast for honey bees, native bees, butterflies and moths. From my perspective that makes golden-

rod a garden gem.

Rausa Roscinski

Center Assistant

With Thanksgiving and the Holidays

among us, nearing the end of the year, many

people like to take this time to reflect on

everything that they are thankful for. I strive

to remind myself to be thankful throughout

the entire year, not just during the holiday

season. We have so many reasons to be

thankful—rewarding jobs, a loving family,

and recently a successful hip replacement

(Cathy) are just a few things that we are thankful for every day.

We firmly believe that our community dedicated time to look out for its fellow

man in many forms of kindness throughout the year.

It is healthy to get into the habit of counting your blessings and expressing

gratitude. When you wake up each morning to another day, express thanks for this

opportunity and look for guidance to take on the day ahead.

There will be days that are harder than others, and you will face new and

intimidating challenges. When you retain strong relationships during difficult

times, your gratitude can become contagious to others.

Utilize the holidays as the time to reflect on all that you are thankful for.

Spread love and kindness to others so that they, too, can recognize the scale of love

and respect for our fellow man. Remember all that you have to be thankful for,

and notice those around you who do not have as much as you do. You can take

action in giving back. Living every day with a grateful heart will strengthen you.

Have a thankful Thanksgiving and a blessed Christmas.
