If you’re a fan of traditional dé-cor, you probably appreciate the elegant lines and rich history of neoclassical style.

Interest in classical style really took off in the second half of the 18th century, when Scottish architect Robert Adam began

using its elements in fancy homes, says London designer Adrienne Chinn. Adam recast urns, sphinxes and vine leaves as decorative elements in mirrors and moldings. “Adam’s style owed much to the

archaeological discoveries of Greco-Ro-man domestic architecture at Pompeii and Herculaneum,” says Chinn.

The historical discoveries also inspired the development of neoclassical furni-ture, which replaced the fussy rococo style with more linear, geometric silhou-ettes.

Today, Greco-Roman classicism is the basis of many interior décor styles — Louis XV, Regency, Federal and Georgian among them, says New York designer Elaine Griffi n. “As the oldest recognized style, classicism carries with it the approbation of time and taste,” Griffi n says.

And while it never falls too far off décor’s radar, it’s really enjoying a moment now.

“Classicism’s clean, sleek lines are back with a vengeance this summer, both in a refi ned way and in over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek style statements,” she says.

There are many ways to introduce the style into traditional or contemporary spaces, and at various price points.

Rain shut-off device? Yes, it’s the law! Q: I recently heard a radio ad

saying that the law requires I have a rainfall shut-off device on my automatic irrigation system. Do I really need one,

and why?

A: With all the wonderful

summer rains we have been getting in North Central Florida, having a rain shut-off device is a great idea. Beyond a great idea, it also

is the law.Florida law requires that any

person who purchases and installs an irrigation system must properly install and maintain a functioning rain shut-off device. These devices do just what their name sug-gests; they shut off the irrigation system when they detect rainfall.

This prevents your sprinklers from irrigating in the middle of a rainstorm or after we have had a heavy rainfall. It also is the right thing to do for the health of your landscape and for our environment.

These rain shut-off devices conserve water by preventing

Q: This picture belonged to my mother. To the

best of my recollection it was given to her in the early 1950s. My mother gave it to me in 1962. It appears to be one of

Bessie Pease Gutmann’s baby pictures. I have seen single baby pictures done by her, but this is the only

double baby picture I have seen. The frame is 13 inches by 22. Within the heart on the left, slightly up from the bottom, are numbers and letters, they are “©N.B. 1932.” That picture is titled “A Little Dream.” The letters and numbers within the heart on the right picture are “N.B. 1932.” The title in the picture is “Heavens Gift.”

There is sentimental value to this picture, but I would like to know if there is a monetary value also. My daughter has asked for it to be hers one day, and I would like to be able to pass along some of the history associated with it.

— K.B., Internet

A: Bessie Pease Gut-mann, 1876-1960, is

considered by many to be one of the most famous American artists of infant boys and girls. I am sure the two prints you have are Gutmann’s work. I do not think you have a double baby picture, but two separate images matted and framed together. The two prints you have would sell for less than $50.

Q: I have an original of a one-page newspaper,

“The Kensingtonian,” dated Jan. 25, 1912 . Kensington is a suburb of Philadelphia. Is there any value to a 102-year-old newspaper? The newspa-per measures 17 inches by 22.

— H.B., Ocala

A: Newspapers are a large category of

collecting. The one you have is low on the totem pole of collector interest. I think dollar value would be very little unless there is interest in the Philadel-

phia area. For more information, check out one of the best websites I am aware of in the newspaper collecting world: Rick Brown of the NCSA, Newspaper Collectors Society of America produces the site www.historybuff.com.

Q: In your April 5 column, reader D.W.

asked a question about a scooter given to him in 1940 by his father. My father, who was born in 1914, saved his childhood riding toy which we rode in the 1950s. Ours was also a wooden single rider scooter with front wheel axle and foot pedals. The “T” handle, pushed forward and backward, propelled it, providing reckless rides downhill. In retrospect, since our downhill sidewalk was very steep, it is impressive that my sisters and I survived. It was called an Irish Mail.

— J.C., Internet

A: Reckless downhill rides sound like fun

“Remember When” moments. I am glad you shared it with our readers.

Who knows, perhaps someone will send us a photograph of their Irish Mail scooter.

Q: I found my college stuff, and with it, was

my homecoming program fl yer. It was with Red Skelton as our host that year. I was able to go backstage while my friend interviewed him for our school newsletter. He autographed the program for me. I want to put it in my will for my grandson. Should I have it autho-rized, and can you do this?

— D.M., Ocala

A: I suspect you have triggered a number of

“Remember When” moments for our readers. We never missed the Red Skelton Show on television when I was growing up. Freddie the Freeloader was a favorite character of mine.

Because you were lucky enough to get the auto-graph in person, there is no doubt the signature is authentic. However, it would be wise to have the signature authenticated for the sake of future generations. Contact www.psacard.com. They specialize in autograph authentication.

motifs like acanthus leaves look elegant, particularly when paired with a black card or pleated silk Empire lampshade,” Chinn suggests. Stiffel has a wide selection with silver or burnished bronze bases. (www.stiffel.com) “Ornate plaster corbels used as brackets for decorative display shelves bring a classical element to a room,” she notes. Look for plaster ones, or unfi nished wood that you can paint or gild yourself. (www.architecturaldepot.com) AllModern has pairs of bookends with busts of Hercules or David. The Perseus console from Currey & Company is a sleek, silver-leafed iron piece with a Greek key border. (www.allmodern.com ) At Arhaus, scroll and fl oral wood carvings frame the Clara mirror, while the Adele dining chair, upholstered in velvet, features inlaid antiqued wood rosettes. (www.arhaus.com ) Restoration Hardware has a group of architectural ornament fragments cast in brass and mounted on museum stands, among them swag and tassel, cornice and acanthus scroll patterns. Vintage Italian etchings of capital styles would make nice wall art, and so would an intricate charcoal drawing circa 1900 of classical carved marble portraits. A series of intaglio cameos of neoclassical themes are cast in plaster and framed. The retailer’s also got larger pieces, including wooden columns, pillars

and plinths that could be used as display stands for artwork — perhaps for a plaster bust of Ariadne, or a carved fi nial. (www.restorationhardware.com) Griffi n’s not surprised that the Greek key motif is a trend. “Its sleek, straight lines and crisp right angles are perfect counterparts to contemporary design, and are among the few design motifs that truly look great everywhere and with everything,” she says. She likes to use the design in dressmaker-inspired details, such as embroi-dered tape trim on cur-tains and upholstery. Or, if you want a bold look, consider going for an all-over pattern. Smith and Noble offers the Greek key motif in bright combina-tions of tangerine, navy, red or deep pink with white, or a more subtle pairing of pale gray or aqua with off-white — es-pecially pretty for sheer curtains. (www.smithand-noble.com) Jonathan Adler is known for his use of Greek keys: he puts the pattern on rugs, throws, china and furniture, such as a needlepointed ottoman and a white lacquered cocktail table. (www.jonathanadler.com) If you’re interested in collecting from this style, antique stores invariably have pieces with prov-enance. Or check out www.rubylane.com; the online vintage shop has items including an elaborate desk painted with Pompeian frescoes, a pair of marble lions, salvaged Ionic columns and a circa 1880 hand-painted Italian leather screen.

Q: We have three “air-pressurized”

toilets in our home. They fl ush great, but they are older models, and when fl ushed, sound like a jet engine taking off! Everyone knows when anyone in the house is using the toilet, especially at night when we’re trying to sleep. I would like to know if I can remove the pressure systems and install regular fl ushing systems in these toilets?

— BR, Rhode Island

A: An “air-assisted” toilet uses com-

pressed air to quickly fl ush the water through

the bowl. Originally, they were popular in commer-cial applica-tions. However, when water restrictions

came into play, some contractors started using them in residential bathrooms as well. It sounds like you do have some of the older, air-pressure toilets, because a common complaint was about the fl ushing noise. The good news is that over the years most air-assisted toilets have

been redesigned and they now fl ush at a much lower noise level. I would not recommend trying to rebuild or convert your existing toilets. Replace-ment with a modern “high-effi ciency toilet” should be your best option.

Reducing the loud “jet-fl ushing” sounds at night should give you and your family a fi rst-class ticket to snoozeville.

Q: During cold weather, water drips from the

exhaust fans in the bathrooms. The ducts are metal and are connected together to form one duct to go through the roof to vent outside. About three years ago I had a new roof with a ridge vent in-stalled, and this problem has developed since that time. Previously, I had a roof exhaust fan. How can I stop this leak?

A: Moisture from the bath fans condenses

inside the pipes in colder weather and drips back through the fans. I don’t think adding the ridge vent in place of a power-ventilated fan would make any difference.

The power fan generally does not operate in the

winter. You might want to check to see if the roofers covered the opening where the bath fans

vented through the roof. Bath fans and ventilated kitchen range hoods must vent by means of a metal pipe to the exterior, either through the roof or through a sidewall to the exterior.

Bathroom vent fans cannot terminate in an attic or vent to the soffi t area (overhang) where humidity buildup can cause mold and decay. Too many times I have seen damage to the roof’s

decking where fans are improperly vented. The dampness also will soak into the attic’s insulation providing an ideal environment for mold and ceiling stains to appear.

Each fan should have its own opening to the exterior. The separate pipes should not be joined together, because one fan could push the moisture-laden air through the vent pipe to the other bath-room’s fan. Most bath-room fans have a one-way gate valve so that air fl ows out but not in, but the gate valve can become stuck open due to the buildup of dirt and lint. The pipes should be insulated in the attic space to slow the condensation process.

In addition to your question concerning vent

fans, in most homes there is either a vented or an unvented range hood. If the hood is vented and open to the attic, a grease fi re could naturally be sucked up through the greasy pipe to the attic. If your home has a vented range hood, make sure the hood vents through the roof with a vent termination designed for that particular hood.

How to prevent exhaust fans from dripping water

over irrigation when we have been getting enough rain. This prevents overwatering, which can promote diseases in the turf grass. These devices also help to protect surface and groundwater. Surface water runoff and water that percolates deep into the soil can transport excess fertilizers and pollutants into the ground-water and our ponds and creeks. The most common type of rain shut-off device is one that has absorbent discs that expand and contract with collected moisture.

When the discs expand to the preset limit, the irrigation system shuts off. Install the shut-off device where it will be exposed to straight rainfall — not under a tree or in the path of your sprinklers.

It is important to test the device because the one that was installed with your system may or may not be functioning anymore. Using a rain shut-off device saves water and money, and is healthier for your landscape. To learn more about these devices and how to test them, visit the University of Florida’s IFAS Extension website at www.solutionsforyourlife.com.

Q: I planted what I thought were green

straight cucumber plants from a garden center this spring. They grew well, fl owered, but the cucum-bers they produced were yellow and shaped like a ball. Did they revert back to a different cucumber type, or did I do something wrong?

A: If you saved your label or tag, check to make

sure you didn’t buy lemon cucumber plants. This type has fruit that are round and yellow. If that is not the case, it could be from cultural problems. All vegetables need regular fertilizing as they grow; if the plants were nutrient defi cient, it could cause odd-shaped cukes. Irregular watering or moisture stress also can cause fruit to be rounded or deformed. It happens when the plant is some-what dry when the cucum-ber is developing, and then when we get a very heavy rain, the cukes blow up like a balloon. To prevent this in the future, maintain good soil moisture by using a drip system on a regular basis. For practical answers to gardening questions, contact the Marion County Master Gardener offi ce at 671-8400.

I’ve learned through the years that the right lighting in the right spots transforms a room. So when it came

time to select the fi xtures for our lake home redo, I followed these three tips to ensure the lighting was a bright spot in my decor:1. KITCHEN LIGHTING SHOULD WORK HARD BUT BE BEAUTIFUL: I swear the kitchen in my little lake home could have been used as the set for “I Dream of Jeannie.” Mid-century modern, I’m sure it was the height of style when it made its debut back in the ’50s. But I knew this turquoise tribute to domesticity was not going to work for me. So my husband, Dan, and I teamed up with an architect to bring this all-impor-tant space into this century. His plan included lighting sugges-tions — lovely oiled brass fi xtures — that completely

nailed my vision for the room.

The lights in your kitchen need to provide the illumination necessary to chop your veggies without cutting your fi ngers, plus add lots of style.

Pendants succeed on both levels, as they offer a contempo-rary take on a traditional silhouette.

The island is the hub of the kitchen, so it needs a killer focal point. Try an interesting chandelier that will help bring oodles of charm to a traditional kitchen.

If your kitchen is a neutral color, you can pick a fi xture that stands out a bit. I’m crazy about the oiled brass fi nish that’s so hot right now. It’s warm but not shiny.

2. A LITTLE GLOW MAKES A ROOM WARM AND WONDERFUL: The ceilings are low in my lake house, and the rooms can feel a little dark. So our architect suggested we install library lights over the bookcases in our living room. In the evening, when they are turned on, the lights give the room a warm, welcoming glow .

Sconces are another classic way of adding a little illumina-tion to a room. My friend Beth employed sconces as an art element over her fi replace. They are a beautiful parentheses to lovely artwork.

Beth’s dining room boasts towering ceilings, so she needed some soft lighting to make the area around the table more intimate. She turned once again to sconces. 3. OVERHEAD FIXTURES SHOULD ADD TO THE AMBIANCE: Back in the day, the trend was to pick matching light fi xtures for the entire home.

Today, the doors are wide open, and we’re mixing fi xtures in a gamut of fi nishes and styles.

That said, coordinating lighting looks in a particular area makes a design seem cohesive. For instance, since our lake house’s kitchen and eating area were going to fl ow one into the other, I wanted to make sure the lighting all harmonized.

The chandelier over your dining table sets the tone for the entire room. It could be modern and edgy, a great pick for a transitional home, or a unique chandelier for a dining room that is elegant and dramatic.

For a dining room that’s light and bright, use a collage of formal and informal pieces that blend together. A rustic lantern works to make such a space feel relaxed and approachable.
