HEAD COACH JOHN RITTMAN

HEAD COACH JOHN RITTMAN

John Rittman, a longtime head coach and member of the USA Softball Women’s National Team coaching pool, was named the first head coach of Clemson softball on Nov. 3, 2017. Rittman is leading the program in preparation for its first competitive game in February 2020.

Rittman came to Clemson after serving as associate head coach at the University of Kansas from 2015-17. Rittman joined the Jayhawks after 18 seasons as the head coach at Stanford University and 10 years on the United States National Team coaching staff (2001-08, 2016-18).

Under Rittman, the Cardinals recorded 18-consecutive winning seasons, made 16-straight NCAA appearances, notched 13 40-win seasons and produced at least one All-American in 15 of his last 17 seasons. As head coach, Rittman accumulated a 750-351-3 overall mark, coached a national player of the year, 16 All-Americans, earned five Super Regional appearances, two Women’s College World Series appearances and maintained a spot in every regular-season National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top 25 poll for more than a decade.

Rittman served on the staff of the USA Softball team which won gold at both the 2016 Women’s Softball World Championship and the 2017 Pan Am Qualifier. He also worked with Team USA from 2001-08, coaching the 2004 Olympic gold medal winners in Athens and the 2008 silver medalists in Beijing. Team USA also won gold medals at the 2002 and 2006 World Championship and the 2003 and 2007 Pan Am Games.

Prior to being named head coach at Stanford, Rittman spent four seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Washington, focusing on hitting and defense. Rittman helped start the program and, within just four seasons, the Huskies

had earned a No. 1 national ranking, won the 1996 Pac-10 Championship, made three NCAA Tournament appearances and notched a runner-up finish in their first trip to the Women’s College World Series. Washington became the first team since Texas A&M (1983) to advance to the championship game in its first appearance at the WCWS.

Before his appointment at Washington, Rittman spent two seasons as an assistant at the University of Minnesota. During his second year, the Golden Gophers won the Big Ten Conference with a 20-4 league record. The Gophers set team and individual records in almost every offensive category. The Minnesota squad led the nation in hits and total bases en route to a No. 15 national ranking. Rittman also helped produce two Golden Gopher All-Americans.

From 1988-90, Rittman was an assistant coach at the University of Oregon. During his stay, the Ducks played in the 1989 Women’s College World Series, set several team and individual offensive records and produced an All-American.

Rittman graduated from New Mexico State with a degree in journalism in 1986. He was a three-year letterwinner in baseball as an outfielder at NMSU after transferring from Yavapai Junior College in Prescott, Arizona.

Rittman and his wife, Lorie, a former softball player at the University of Oklahoma, are the parents of Justin, a UCLA graduate and former fullback for the Bruins, and Jake, a freshman punter at Notre Dame.

SEASON OUTLOOK On Feb. 12, 2020, just one month shy of what will be the two-year anniversary in which Clemson Univer-sity Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich announced the launch of the Tigers’ softball program, the Clem-son softball team is slated to take to its home field at the Clemson Softball Stadium for the first time in a doubleheader against Western Carolina. The program has come a long way since Radakovich announced the approval of the program by the Clemson Board of Trust-ees. On Nov. 3, 2017, Radakovich hired Head Coach John Rittman. The Clemson Softball Stadium, which sits adjacent to Doug Kingsmore Stadium, was later built while Rittman filled his 2020 roster with 18 eager student-athletes that hail from all across the Southeast.

“When I was first hired in November of 2017, it was obviously a very exciting day for me and my family,” said Rittman. “The opportunity that presented itself — to build the program from the ground up — is one that is not taken lightly.”

Rittman came in and hit the ground running. On Dec. 4, 2017, he hired his Associate Head Coach Kyle Jamieson, who was tabbed the 2017 Southern Con-ference Coach of the Year as Head Coach at Furman University. Jamieson led the Paladins to three consecu-tive 30-win campaigns and a share of the 2017 SoCon Championship, a first for the program in 22 years. Fol-lowing in Jamieson’s footsteps was Courtney Breault, who signed on to Rittman’s staff as the Assistant Coach on July 10, 2018, after serving as Assistant Coach un-der Jamieson at Furman from 2014-17. Breault played for Nebraska in 2012 and 2013, where she was a two-time All-Big Ten Second Team selection. As a senior in 2013, Breault led the Cornhuskers to a berth in the Women’s College World Series. She began her collegiate softball career at Arkansas, where she played two sea-sons for the Razorbacks in 2010 and 2011, at which time Jamieson served as the Assistant Coach. In ad-dition to Jamieson and Breault, Rittman is also fully staffed with a full-time Director of Operations in Jean-nie Murphy, Volunteer Assistant Coach Reese Jacobs, Graduate Assistant Jake Combs, two student managers in Kennedy Adcock and Phillip Jennings and a support staff that includes an athletic trainer, strength and con-ditioning coach and academic advisor.

“After that first year of recruiting and putting the team together, we had our Team One show up in the fall of 2019. We began prepping for our inaugural season. We had a great fall in which we practiced and scrim-maged a handful of teams and signed another outstand-ing recruiting class (2020), who will play in our second season. Now, we’re gearing up to start the inaugural campaign.”

The Tigers’ 2020 regular-season schedule is high-lighted by 28 home games, including the grand open-ing of the Clemson Softball Stadium against the Cata-mounts. Additionally, Clemson was named one of six host sites of this year’s Big Ten/ACC Challenge, which features Pittsburgh, Maryland and Michigan State. Clemson is also scheduled to face four teams that com-peted in the 2019 NCAA Tournament: Georgia, Virginia Tech, Louisiana Tech and the 2018 national champion Florida State Seminoles.

“When you start a program, you really have to be care-ful to not overschedule because you’re going to have a young team. One of our main priorities was to put together a schedule that enabled us to get our feet un-derneath us a little bit but also prepare us for the rigors of the ACC. So there are a lot of opportunities for us to grow but also allow our fans to see softball at the highest level.”

Despite having not played a single game yet, the Ti-gers’ roster will have to overcome the losses of senior infielder Ansley Gilstrap and freshman outfielder Alia Logoleo, both of whom will miss time indefinitely due to injury. Gilstrap transferred from USC Upstate in the summer of 2018 and was a two-time All-ASUN selec-tion and the 2017 ASUN Tournament MVP. Logoleo is an athletic outfielder from Nashville, Tenn., who would have likely been hitting towards the top of the Tigers’ batting order.

Rittman and the Tigers will lean heavily on their out-field, a group in which Rittman placed a heavy empha-sis on depth and versatility. In addition to big hitters like Marissa Guimbarda and freshmen Valerie Cagle and Morgan Johnson, Rittman foresees players like Arielle Oda and Madison May being able to play multiple posi-tions for Clemson in the field. Guimbarda transferred from Furman and was tabbed the 2019 SoCon Player of the Year after hitting .348 and leading the SoCon with 16 home runs, which is also the Paladins’ single-season home run record. Additionally, the Tigers added Carlee Shannon, who secured her spot on the team after an open tryout in the fall of 2019. Rittman foresees Shan-non making an impact both in the outfield an as the team’s primary pinch runner.

“In recruiting this first team, we looked at players who were athletic, who were versatile and who could play a number of positions. When you look at our out-field makeup, we have two pitchers who also play in the outfield in Valerie [Cagle] and Marissa [Guimbarda]. When you’re building a first roster and you’re kind of limited in recruiting, you’ve got to get athletes in here who are versatile. So we did that. Arielle [Oda] and Madison [May] are also two outfielders who can also play in the infield, and we have Morgan Johnson, who is someone who we think is going to bring a lot of power to the plate for us.”

In the infield is where the Tigers’ leadership lies. Four of Clemson’s five upperclassmen in transfers MK Bonamy, Cammy Pereira, Bailey Taylor and Gilstrap are infielders who gained significant playing time at their previous schools. However, Rittman will have plenty of options with the combination Oda, May, freshmen Han-nah Goodwin and Kyah Keller and the newest member of the Clemson roster, Grace Mattimore, a transfer from Army West Point, also on hand to play in the infield.

“We have a great group of infielders. We have a grad-uate senior transfer from Notre Dame in MK [Bonamy], who’s going to bring a lot of experience and leadership, and Cammy Pereira, who transferred from Furman. Those two should probably make up the right side of our infield with MK playing first base and Cammy playing second base, so we have a lot of leadership at those two

positions. On the left side of the infield, we have Han-nah [Goodwin], who’s a freshman with a good arm and a terrific hitter at the plate. We’ll look for her to possi-bly play shortstop along with Arielle [Oda] and Madison [May] due to Ansley (Gilstrap) being out indefinitely. At third base, we have Bailey Taylor, who’s a transfer from Troy. We have the ability to move Hannah [Goodwin] or Madison [May] over to third, depending on how things shake out. And we recently added Grace [Mattimore], who can play anywhere in the field for us except for the circle. Like our outfielders, we have a versatile group in the infield who’s going to compete both offensively and defensively, which will bode well for us.”

Behind the plate for the Tigers will be catchers JoJo Hyatt and Abi Stuart. Hyatt is a redshirt freshman from Buford, Ga., who joined the program in the fall of 2018 and was the starting catcher in the Tigers’ 2019 fall slate. Stuart is a true freshman from Snow Camp, N.C., who officially enrolled this past fall and also saw time behind the plate in Clemson’s fall scrimmages.

“JoJo [Hyatt] caught for us in most of our fall scrim-mages. She had some extra time to prepare for this upcoming season, having been here for more than a full year now. She’s going to be a great player for us, who has a nice arm and can hit. Abi [Stuart] has made tremendous strides as a catcher in the short amount of time that she’s been on campus.”

In the circle, Clemson’s pitching staff consists of Guimbarda and three freshmen in Cagle, Logan Caymol and Emma Whitfield. Caymol was the first player to offi-cially sign with the program back in November of 2017. Both Caymol and Whitfield saw significant time in the circle during Clemson’s fall scrimmages.

“We have four pitchers this season. Logan Caymol is a redshirt freshman. Like JoJo, she had a year to prepare with us. Emma Whitfield and Valerie [Cagle] are true freshmen, and we also have Marissa [Guimbarda]. All of those pitchers complement each other well in re-gard to the pitches that they throw and their velocity. I feel like we’ve got a well-rounded pitching staff, which gives us some options and versatility.”

There is no doubt the Tigers’ 53-game inaugural regular season will certainly be one to remember for ages to come and one that will be filled with many firsts and many milestones. And while Rittman knows the importance of not losing sight of the big picture as a young program, he also knows his team has to take it one game at a time this season in order to set the foun-dation for Clemson softball and to achieve this team’s definition of success.

“We couldn’t be happier heading into this upcoming season. We’ve got a great group of players who are eager to go out there and showcase who they are, but we’re going to get out there and get after it — each and every play — because we’re trying to build something special literally from the ground up, and that’s no easy task.”
