Program was held by Janet Jensen , Self employed Artist with her speakers being Lisa Scheve and Katie Hunhoff of the River Walk. Lisa S. began with giving the mission of the Riverwalk of promoting the arts and stimulating the growth and economy of downtown and riverfront of Yankton through a yearly outdoor sculp- ture display and contest. The time line was provided of when artists had to sub- mit applications for the 2011 sculptures. The public is currently invited to vote on the Peoples Choice Award which will have a permanent place in Yankton and 12 new sculptures shall be installed on May 12-13. The Celebration to announce the new sculptures will be held along with the Auction gala in April of 2011. Sponsorships are also being sought by the River Walk inc. Susan provided a powerpoint on the current sculptures and explained that the bases are permanent but the sculptures are removable. The cookie sales held went over very well for the group and they hope to do the same fundraiser in Dec. of 2011. Paula Tacke thanked the speakers and Hostess and announced the next meet- ing on Monday Jan. 31 at Minerva’s at noon with Arlene Kathan as our hostess and speaker, informing us about the fos- ter parent and adoption programs through the South Dakota Department of Social Services. YANKTON AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY Yankton American Legion Auxiliary met January 17, 2011, President Betty Adam presiding. Mae Tienken introduced Krista Roth who works for Independent Living Choices. She told about the emergency dialer telephone and how it works. They provide home modification adaptive devises such as ramps or lift chairs, reachers and hand controls. These are all paid for by the State, certain financial guidelines must be met. There are 111 Auxiliary members; Brenda Reisdorph is a new member, two more for goal. Dorothy Johansen said there’s a Bingo Party at HSC on Thursday, January 27th at 12:45 p.m. Cheer chairman, Amanda Johnson, sent cards to members. At the American Legion & Auxiliary membership dinner on January 13th, June Baggs was presented a Certificate for 65 years of Auxiliary membership. Bring valentines for the “Hugs for Heroes” project to Mae by January 28 to be taken to Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. Correspondence from District Seven President, Kathy Hornstra, was read regarding the American Legion & Auxiliary Mid-Winter Conference to be held at Cedar Shore on February 11-13, 2011; she requested members to bring items for the silent auction; 160 paid memberships needed to be a gold dis- trict. Millie Wootton, Auxiliary member, residing at Sister James Nursing Home, will be 95 years old on January 24, please remember her with a card. A desert lunch was served by Nadean Auch and Marlys List. The next meeting is February 21, the program will be Children/Youth/ Education Reports. Lunch hostesses are Shirley Juffer and Dorothy Johansen. YANKTON TOASTMASTER CLUB 1294 Yankton Toastmaster Club 1294 met Saturday Jan. 29 at the Fry’n Pan Restaurant. The meeting was called to order by President John Swenson. The invocation was given by Mike Arens fol- lowed by the Pledge of allegiance to the flag. Harry Voelzke introduced his guest Kwen Sanderson. Vernon Arens was introduced as the Toastmaster of the meeting. He called on grammarian Steve LeBay to give the word of the day, which was “oblation” and means removal. Table topics was led by Steve Hamilton on the subject of words of wisdom. Speeches were given by Angela Mann on “The Big C-L” from the specialty speech manual. Master Evaluator of the meeting was Woody Sanders, who evaluated the meeting and called on Kevin Buhl to evaluate Mann, Kathy Hejna to evaluate Swenson. Presentations were also given by gram- marian LeBay, joke master Jeremy Skrenes, Ah Counter/Nail Dropper Tara Arens, Timer Carol Hale, and vote count- er Skrenes. Table Topic winner was Atie, Skrenes and Joy Winther, best speaker was Mann, and best evaluator was Buhl. Other participants in the meeting were Roy Wilcox and Lorena Riechert. PARTNERS IN POLICY MAKING USD Theatre Student Wins ACTF Competition VERMILLION – Cody Strand, a theatre major specializing in act- ing from The University of South Dakota, was one of two winners of the prestigious Irene Ryan Acting Competition at the Region V, Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (ACTF) in Ames, Iowa, Jan. 16-22. Strand, of Brandon, and his acting partner, Ty Hudson of South Sioux City, Neb., competed against 296 other actors from a six state region for the right to advance to the national finals of ACTF at The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., in April. The competitive audition consisted of six minutes of prepared mate- rial, including an original comic scene, a serious scene and a Shakespearean monologue. Several other USD student pairings reached the semi-final round of 64, including Hudson and Mary Ridder of Sioux Falls; Reece Porter of South Sioux City, Neb., and partner Jamie Fields of Sioux Falls; and Maggie Conley of Des Moines, Iowa, with Jessie Atkinson of Sioux City, Iowa. Other student actors from The U in the competition included Allen Jones of Miller, Rebecca Barczak of Clarksville, Ind., Chris Johnson of Crown Point, Ind., Brooke Grassby of Rapid City, Natalie Polisson of Crown Point, Ind., and Elizabeth Wright of Yankton. The Region V festival at Iowa State University attracted more than 1,000 students from col- leges and universities in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and South Dakota. Students showcased their talent and competed for scholarships and awards in all areas of the- atre, including acting, design, playwriting and dramaturgy. Additionally, students utilized the festival to attend a variety of workshops and auditioned for summer employment, including Ebony Shanklin, a USD student from Sioux Falls, one of 11 actresses cast in “Las Hermanas Padilla,” a new play by Tony Meneses which received a staged reading directed by Rob Urbinati, a professional director from New York City. USD Theatre students special- izing in design and technical the- atre were also awarded accolades at the festival: Erin Gallion of Salina, Kan., received second place for her “Twelfth Night” make-up design; Ben Kramer of Sioux Falls, second place scenic design of non-produced work for “Macbeth”; and Natalie Friesen of Freeman, costume designer for “Twelfth Night”, was selected to showcase her costumes in the festival’s costume parade.
