Do-Gooders at Gala and on BoardHeidi McCutcheon | Executive Director

My goodness! I don’t believe I’ve ever seen such a long string of great, fair weather in the Pacific Northwest as we have in the past 12-18 months. It’s gorgeous outside. Many of the trees seem to be confused in downtown Shelton as they are two months ahead in blooming. Spring seems to have sprung.

Along those lines, we have endeavored to include several articles about how to spring clean your home, your business and your life – all from local experts! As you begin projects and wonder, “who can help me with that?” make sure to take a look at our member directory, located at the back of this mag-azine. From cleaners to roofers, landscapers to appliance repair – we have you covered.

The Chamber’s Awards Gala, where we honor the many businesses and volunteers across Mason County, was a spectac-ular event again this year (see page 6 for all the details). That evening, the Chamber celebrat-ed its 93rd Anniversary, the award winners were announced, and the Board of Trustees was installed.

Our Board members span many locations throughout Mason County – Hoodsport, Matlock,

Shelton, and Union – and also span a variety of different busi-nesses. From major employers to one-person entities, from retail to service and more, we look to our Board members to share the perspective of our many businesses. Our newest Board members are Pam Hanson of Cameo Boutique & Wine Shop in Union and Justin Baze from Black Star Printing in Shelton. Pam’s store has been a fixture on the Hood Canal for the past 30+ years. She offers wine tasting ev-ery weekend and has a vast array of items for purchase. If you are planning to attend a Kentucky Derby type of event (such as the one on page 11), she also has amazing hats for a fraction of the price you’d expect.

Justin is the second generation of the Baze family to serve on the Chamber Board. His father Herb now spends much of his time at the Strip Steak House, creating the way for Justin to

take on a leadership role at Black Star Printing. Black Star offers screen printing, embroidery, signs & banners, vehicle lettering, business cards and more. When Justin isn’t at Black Star, he can often be found performing with the Varmints, where he is lead guitar.

Our community’s volunteers, leaders, and do-gooders all work to make Mason County a better place to live, work, and play. My appreciation goes to all of you who take time out of your personal lives to give more. Keep up the good work!

Hometown Gal Takes Helm of Chamber BoardKelley Crabtree | Executive Director, Maple Glen Senior Living2015 Chamber Board President

As I step into the leadership role of the Chamber Board, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself and tell you a bit about my history in Shelton and Mason County.

I was born and raised in Shelton, I graduated from Shelton High in 1985… a VERY SHORT 30 years ago. I am pretty sure if we had voted “Most Likely to Never Leave” I would have been at the top of the list. I’ll be the first to admit I love to visit new places and big cities but wouldn’t give up small town living for any-thing. I have been married to my husband Fred for 28 years and we have two grown daughters, Jessica and Cassie. We are very proud of both of them, who are currently working while going to college following their passions.

We also have three granddaugh-ters who couldn’t be more amazing!

I have worked a few different jobs over the years. During my senior year in high school I began working for Olympia Physical Therapy, the contracted provider at Mason General Hospital. I then enjoyed five years at the hos-pital itself and I remain friends with those physical therapy folks, some of whom still work there! Later I spent five years working for Exceptional Foresters and took a second job at night at Nault’s Deli. In 1998, I went to work at Sunbridge (now Shelton Health & Rehab) as the Dietary Manager – I had always loved to cook and they took a chance on me. While there I received some great mentorship and I learned management skills. That experi-

Kelley Crabtree Maple Glen Senior Living

ence led me to realize that skilled nursing care was not where I wanted to spend the rest of my working career. So, I decided to apply for the Culinary Director position at Maple Glen where I could still do what I enjoy and contribute to the lives of seniors in a less restrictive environment. I started my career with Maple Glen in October 2000 prior to the community opening. I worked as the Culinary Director which included cooking breakfast and lunch four out of five days each week. While working from the kitchen I spent a lot of time giving tours, renting apart-ments, and learning everything I could about assisted living. After nine months I moved into the position of Administrative Assistant as well as continuing to provide oversight in the kitchen as the Culinary Director, minus the cooking. After one month in that role I was offered the executive director position. It was a scary and exciting time. I agreed to try it on the condition that I could return to cooking if it didn’t work out. I secretly thought they were crazy… but that was nearly 14 years ago!

Over the years I have been involved in the community in a variety of ways. I have served on the board of United Way, been a member of the Shelton Kiwanis Club, volunteered in several capacities at local schools, and the team at Maple Glen and I have been involved in Relay For Life for many years. For the last three years, I have served on the Chamber’s Board of Trustees and over the last two years as the vice president of marketing. I love how much I have learned about our community through my time with the Chamber and look for-ward to continuing to learn as I work side by side with the board members and Chamber staff as your president for 2015.

Chamber hosts VIPs at Awards GalaEach year the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce hosts its members and community leaders at the Annual Awards Gala, presenting the prestigious Business of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, and President’s Choice awards. The semi-formal event, presented by Premier Sponsor Little Creek Casino Resort, began with a word from our sponsors, after an Ode to 2014 by Champagne Sponsor Melanie Bakala of State Farm Insurance. The sold out crowd of VIPs enjoyed a delectable four course meal, with a menu of salm-on trio, roasted beet salad, a delectable braised short rib with risotto and an exotic crème brûlées & cheese course, all expertly paired with wines by Little Creek’s grand sommelier. Everything from the menu cards outlining these specialties, to the table numbers and place

cards were beautifully created by The Shopper, who was the Media Sponsor along with Golden Pacific Embossing.

The Chamber’s executive director Heidi McCutcheon presented the annual State of the Chamber Address which hit on the highlights of 2014. Again this year, many of the Chamber’s sponsors provided

giveaways that coincided with the presentation. The evening progressed with the Honorable Victoria Meadows presiding over the 2015 Installation of the Board of Trustees and with appreciation to outgoing board members Herb Baze and Jill Himlie. (See page 3 for an introduction of the 2015 Board Members.)

As the event wrapped, all of the nominees were honored and the winners for the 2014 awards were announced by McCutcheon and 2014 Chamber President Brian Kelly. McCutcheon said, “We are so fortunate to have an abundance of businesses and organizations who strive to make Mason County a better place to live, work and play.

Again this year, all of the nominees and the recipients of the awards truly reflect this character. Our community is a better place because of them.”

Courtesy of Awards Sponsor, Adept Law PLLC, honors went to four deserving businesses and individuals: Citizen of the Year Melanie Bakala, Volunteer of the Year Susanna Samuelson, and President’s Choice Lisa Woodard.

Business of the Year honors the business that made the most significant contribution benefiting the Mason County business community over the past year. This year’s nominees included Better On You, Joon-bug Yoga, Off the Walls! Gallery, Peninsula Credit Union, and Pier 101 Gift Shop & Women’s Boutique. The award went to Peninsula Credit Union.

Four citizens were nominated for the 2014 Citizen of the Year award, which honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions and who have given freely of their time, talent, energy and expertise. The nominees were Melanie Bakala, Spen-cer Jones, Bill Kendrick, and Patty Ayala Ross. Melanie Bakala took home the 2014 award.

Volunteer of the Year nominees are recog-nized for their contributions to the Cham-ber's programs and activities. These volun-teers have given their time, talents, energies and expertise in an effort to enhance the business community and the community at large. Volunteer extraordinaires John Lester, Jennifer Owens, and Susanna Samuelson were nominated this year. Susanna Samuelson received the award.Continued on next page

He specifically noted “Lisa a shining example as a professional and as a serviceable citizen. She leads by example, showcasing a dedica-tion and work ethic which is matched only by energy.”

The entire Awards Gala was an exquisite affair, celebrating another momentous year. In custom with past years, Cooper Studios was on hand to capture the evening’s events and photograph our winners.

SUSANNA SAMUELSON, who lives in Mason County with her husband Matt and their two sons, is the business development officer for Our Community Credit Union. Prior to working at OCCU, she built her foundation and passion for community service while working for Cath-olic Charities. Now, Susanna lives out her favorite saying “You can do no great things, just small things with great love” in each of her numerous volunteer activities. She sits on the Mason General Hospital Founda-tion Board, is the treasurer for the Olympic Middle School PTSO, and is the current President for United Way of Mason County in addition to her role on the Chamber’s Ambassador Committee. Her nominator touted her “supportive nature” and praised her for integrity as well as her true passion for helping individu-als. This is especially evident in her recent efforts spearheading a community partner education grant program which offers classroom enrich-ment opportunities.

LISA WOODARD moved to Shelton more than twenty years ago to be close to her husband’s family and has since made her own impact on our community. She has been in the banking industry for most of her career and is the Branch Manager at Columbia Bank. President Kelly noted her contribution of, “countless hours to community organizations, often lending leadership… [with] the incredible talent of coordinating every tiny detail, looking at the big picture, rallying committees and volunteers, all the while creating a fun environment.” In addition to serving the Chamber as a past Board member including a term as president and as chair of several program committees, she also supports the Mason General Hospital Foundation and

United Way. When not working or volunteering, Lisa spends much of her time with her friends and family, outdoors – often, she and her husband are likely at the ball field with their son, Cody.

Spring Inspiration for Clever RenovationsSusan Wray | Dover Point Designs

Spring has arrived and likely inspiration is settling in. You are glancing around a room in your home or business, and you are getting the feeling that things are beginning to appear stale, cluttered, tattered or have even become completely dysfunctional and out of control. You cannot ignore the reality before your eyes... something needs to be done. Is it a cosmetic refreshing, a revamp, a minor upgrade, or a total transformation?

You might be caught in a whirlwind of endless possibilities, or stuck, not being able to wrap your head around a single definitive idea. Not to worry! The decision to begin a project can unearth a bounty of questions which prove to be exciting and motivating, while at the same time daunt-ing and confusing. As a designer, remod-eler and embellisher of interiors, exteriors, and landscapes, I often find that this is the quandary many are struggling with when they give me a call.

First: bring out the hot water bottle, a secu-rity blanket, and some chamomile tea. You can let go of the panic attack to have an in-depth discussion drawing conclusions as to the extent of the project. Typically, this can depend on a multitude of components such as timeframe, budget and purpose. Most folks have a bit more creative instinct than they realize, and once questions are asked concerning function, style, and preferences, a framework begins to emerge. Using this information, begin analyzing the area with an intentionally fresh perspective. Often, when we have lived or worked in a space for quite a while, we tend to get overly familiar with it and are not able to explore new options or take our thinking outside our daily routine. Ask yourself questions about the space. For example, does the cur-rent function of this room need to remain

or will the way you would like to use the space be changing? Do you wish to add an office or can a spare bedroom become an office that doubles as a guest room when needed?

At times, you may need to hire a consultant to add direction and identify new possibil-ities. Occasionally, my clients will ask for consultation designing an overall vision including style, color scheme, furnishing decisions and layout, but may be content to run with the ideas themselves. Others ask for periodic guidance along the way, and yet another will require my assistance as project manager, walking with them one step at a time as the changes progress.

Naturally, each and every design project can cover the scope of one extreme to another and could either take a few days to accomplish or potentially end up stretching out further as a greater vision begins to unfold. As you begin transforming your space, let me stress that whatever the size of your design plans; patience, planning and preparation are absolutely necessary. Couple these with a positive outlook and a way will be found for the big picture to be fine-tuned and carefully managed, so that when your dreams and your pocket book meet, the result will be a beautiful and successful improvement.

Rubbish! Get to Spring CleaningRik Fredrickson | Mason County Garbage & Recycling

Spring is a great time to clean out the garage, remodel that kitchen or replace that leaky roof. If you’re wondering what to do with the resulting rubbish, Mason County Garbage offers a variety of services to help with your cleanup or construction project. If you have a small clean out project they can deliver and pick up weekly or every other week.

They offer both small containers or, if your project is larger, you can get a 20 or 40 yard roll off container. Or, if you’re cleaning out the yard or the shop, they provide containers for separated materials such as wood (non-treated), metal, concrete or asphalt that will reduce a substantial amount of disposal fees by being hauled to a recycler. And if you need temporary storage during construction and home projects, they can provide secure lockable storage con-tainers for storage of building materials, tools, or even furniture.

Special services are required since deep cleaning your office typically results in sensitive documents. Good news! If you have old paperwork that may be confidential; they also offer shredding service at the Shelton office to recycle those old documents.

Now that we’ve alleviated many poten-tial reasons to put off spring clean-ing – get to it! You can learn more at masoncountygarbage.com or by calling (360) 426-8729.

McCutcheon to Serve on Chamber Executives Association BoardHeidi McCutcheon, the Executive Director of the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce, has been elected to fill a three-year term on the Board of the Western Association of Chamber Executives (WACE).

WACE is an association of chamber of commerce executives and staff professionals with approximately 860 members in 20 Western states and Canada. The association is designed to promote and enhance the professional development of chamber of commerce executives and is the largest state or regional chamber of commerce execu-tives association in the United States.

“I’m honored to serve on the WACE Board and represent Mason County as well as Washington State,” said McCutcheon. “I’m looking forward to working with the board

members to provide directors across the nation with the education and informa-tion they need to continue to lead in their communities.”

Incorporated in 1924, the association has played a significant role in the growth and development of chamber of commerce professionals. Over the years, membership has become synonymous with access to a network of experienced chamber executives and exposure to emerging trends and usable ideas on every facet of chamber of com-merce management.

Dumpster Diving Initiative PassesAfter almost two years of effort, the City of Shelton passed a dumpster diving ordinance this past December. At that time, Chamber representatives asked how they could support law enforcement to decrease crime downtown.

One idea was an ordinance prohibiting dumpster diving as without having such an ordi-nance, police officers were hard pressed to sort out the mischief occurring in the alleyways. We thought it was a good step in the right direction for creating a vibrant downtown. We pro-posed it to the City Commis-sioners, who asked the city-cre-ated Poverty Task Force (PTF) to consider the ordinance as they did their work.

The PTF included the ordi-nance in their recommenda-tions, included in a December 2013 report to the commission.

Chamber Gets Results with Local and State Government

McCleary decision, revenue proposals abound from the Governor’s office and from Democrats in the legislature.

At the same time, Republi-cans insist on reforms before revenue, looking at a myriad of ways to make government more efficient. Several Chamber rep-resentatives attended an AWB event last month and had the opportunity to hear from state leaders about these and other issues that affect businesses.

Minimum WageIt appears that a $12 minimum wage has tremendous support in Washington State. The Asso-ciation of Washington Business believes it’s not a matter of if – it’s a matter of how. Either the legislature can increase it in-ternally or it could be posed to the voters through an initiative in 2016. Washington State has the highest minimum wage in the country.

Thanks to the work of the sub-sequent Human Services Com-mittee, the police department, and your Chamber, the City Commission voted to approve the ordinance. We believe this rule gives our law enforcement officers one more tool in their efforts to keep our city clean and safe.

Alleyway Lighting Another recommendation of PTF was for the City to consid-er lighting the alleyways. When Mason County PUD#3 heard about this, they contacted the city with a proposal: we’ll put up the lights, you pay for the power. We are proud of the City Commission for partner-ing with the PUD and voting yes on this project.

Legislators Go to WorkAs our state faces the need to better fund education as a result of the state Supreme Court’s

Supporters say that increasing the minimum wage builds the economy from the bottom up, because when someone makes more, they spend more - putting more money in to the economy. Opponents say that people have low wages because they don’t have enough educa-tion, experience and/or skills to move up to higher paying jobs.

It is interesting to note that although there is support for increasing the minimum wage, people in Washington also be-lieve that small business growth is critical and prefer solutions that favor small business.

It is possible that there is mis-understanding how increasing labor costs could affect the small business owner. Some business owners say that if their wage expense increases, they will face the possibility of having to eliminate jobs in order keep their business afloat,

ultimately creating higher unemployment. We’ll keep you informed on this topic as it moves forward.

New Revenue and the EnvironmentAt first look, who wouldn’t want cleaner air? Governor Inslee’s Carbon Pollution Accountability Act (a cap and trade reform) is said to “to cut emissions to make Washing-ton healthier and incentivize innovative businesses to meet the needs of the growing clean energy economy,” according to a policy brief on Governor Inslee’s website.

The fact is that Washington is already one of the greenest states, currently a rate of 36% below the national average for greenhouse gas (GHG) emis-sions per capita and has been on a downward trend over the last 10 years - despite growth in the economy and popula-tion. Washington is within 3% of the state’s 2020 GHG emissions goal. This has been accomplished through collabo-ration, not through regulation and taxing. While many people generally support environmen-tal efforts, the support drops dramatically when it includes increased cost of food and electricity.

Think about this: There are 130 facilities targeted in this legislation, including refin-eries, power plants and large

facilities which manufacture concrete, aluminum, pulp and paper, agricultural products and more. Most of these emitters face tough competition on a regional or worldwide basis. Rising production costs will force them to make difficult choices to move out of state or to close. Employment opportu-nities decrease for us, and all we have done is drive those higher carbon-emitting companies to states and countries that allow higher emissions.

Ultimately this won’t reduce carbon emissions - it will just move them from our back yard. You can also bet that fuel and energy costs will increase: A recent study estimates that this program will cost the average Washington family an addition-al $56 per month by 2035.

In the same timeframe, cap and trade will decrease income by an average of $3.1 billion per year or nearly $1,200 per household when divided by the number of Washington households. We’ll update on this subject as well.

Military Exercise will Increase Shelton Airport Activity June 17-24Off the coast of Washington lies an earthquake fault line referred to as the Cascadia Subduction Zone or the Juan De Fuca Subduction Zone. Scientists be-lieve this is the only fault line within the “Ring of Fire” that has not experienced a major quake in the past 50 years.

At the direction of the Gov. Inslee, branch-es of the military will begin planning for a “what if ” scenario this June called “Ever-green Tremor.” The scenario will be based on a 9.0 earthquake off the coast that pro-duces a 12 to 40 foot Tsunami wave with aftershocks of 7.0 or greater magnitude, triggering additional wave action. Needless to say, this scenario would be devastating to all of our coastal neighbors. Sanderson Field has been selected to support all search and rescue to Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties.

In June, the military will arrive at Sander-son Field with 40 to 60 personnel along with C-130 aircraft and helicopters to begin their planning. Most of this will be what is called a “table top” exercise, where military planners work through various situations in order to produce a procedures manual.

Then, in 2016, the military will exercise those procedures brought about by this year’s planning exercise. So, when you see a marked increase in helicopter activity June 17-24, rest assured planning exercises for the “Evergreen Tremor” are taking place.

Head to the Shores (or Hills)For many of us, it’s the reason we choose to settle in Mason County. With a salt water canal at its center and a myriad of lakes, streams, and waterfalls surrounding the inner fingers of Puget Sound – this area is rich in shellfish and water related opportunities. As this amazing weather starkly contrasts with the glacier conditions in the East – it’s time to start planning your outdoor activities!

SHELLFISH GATHERINGGo prepared with buckets, boots and crab pots and delight in the mouth-watering taste of the area’s shellfish bounty. Warm weather is a less than desirable time to harvest shellfish but this early seasonal cool mornings and favorable days are perfect to get out on the beach! Stay away from the months without an “R” if you are uncertain. When in doubt, purchase from one of the local harvesters instead. The HAMA HAMA STORE Oyster Saloon is open daily in Lilliwaup with delicious chowders and daily seafood frys. Stop in their shop or at TAYLOR SHELLFISH south of Shelton on 101 to take home some local beach product. If you are harvesting your own, be sure to check out the current regulations at wdfw.wa.gov before you head to one of our many public beaches.

A few spots along Hood Canal:• BELFAIR STATE PARK – An excellent beach

for oysters year-round. Stay overnight, and grill your catch at your campsite.

• LILLIWAUP State Park and South Lilliwaup – Clams and oysters open all year.

• TWANOH State Park – Clams and oyster• WEST DEWATTO – DNR owned beach has

clams and oysters open all year.• EAGLE CREEK – Has excellent oyster beds.

The scenery along this stretch of highway make the extra drive to this little beach well worth the effort.

In Puget Sound:• SOUTH DOUGALL POINT – Clams and

oysters open all year.• DNR 24/GRAPEVIEW – DNR owned beach

Clams and oysters open all year.• MCMICKEN ISLAND STATE PARK – Clams and

oysters open all year. • DNR 33 – Clams and oysters open all year. • HOPE ISLAND STATE PARK – Accessible by

boat and located between Steamboat and Squaxin Islands, is a great place for shell-fishing.

• OAKLAND BAY – 6 miles north of Shelton, makes for a fun but muddy hunt for oys-ters, manila, and eastern softshell clams.

PUT THE BOAT IN THE WATERPaddling or motoring – renting, owning or bor-rowing – it’s time to enjoy your hundreds and hundreds of miles of shoreline from the freedom of a boat! Here are just a few local options:

TWANOH STATE PARK offers a ramp and dock. The park also provides moorage. Fees are charged for launching, trailer parking and mooring at docks, floats or buoys. The HOOD CANAL MARINA offers moorage and fueling just a stone’s throw from Alderbrook Resort and Spa in Union. The PORT OF ALLYN Boat Launch is at the northern end of the Case Inlet so you get quick access when coming from the north via Bremerton or Gig Harbor. ARCADIA POINT on South Puget Sound offers excellent access to launch if you want to plan a day at Hope Island or perhaps lunch in Olympia! What better way to arrive in our neighboring communities than by boat!

The scenic drive along Hood Canal never gets old!

The PORT OF SHELTON launch is also available for access to Hammersly inlet and exploring Oakland Bay; but beware, low tides can make this launch difficult.

The PORT OF HOODSPORT dock is also available for public use. There are boat slips available, overnight moorage is available at $10/slip/night. There are some great little shops and restaurants in Hood-sport that make this a fantastic day excursion for the whole family.

Our family waves goodbye the serious fishers before the sun rises with a launch from POTLATCH or UNION and joins them for lunch in Hoodsport or at Alderbrook – at a more civilized hour!

DON’T HAVE A BOAT?If you do not have a boat to launch, don’t despair! ALDERBROOK RESORT & SPA in Union has variety of boat for rent – motorized and un-motorized as well as charter trips. Union Paddle and Row, Lake

Cushman Resort, and North Bay Kayaks offer a variety including paddle and motor boats. The WATERFRONT AT POTLATCH and at SKOKOMISH PARK AT LAKE CUSHMAN offer a wide variety of rentals including kayaks, paddle boats, motor boats, electric boat and a pontoon party barge.

Check out the directory starting on page 27 for a list of Chamber members who offer water access options. Some have discounts during the shoulder season (now) and offers special deals just for locals! Call or visit their websites for details.

SEE THE SIGHTS Hopefully these suggestions and the budding trees have inspired you to brush the cobwebs out of your kayaks and tune up your outboards; but if you are more interested in getting the cobwebs out of your head and tuning your body for some outdoors adventure – consider a trip to the backyard!

A day’s exploration of the OLYMPIC NATIONAL FOREST can take you from breathtaking mountain vistas with meadows of wildflowers to colorful ocean tide-pools. The southern portion of Hood Canal near Hood-sport provides recreation oppor-tunities near Lake Cushman, the Hamma Hamma and South Fork Skokomish Rivers, and provides ac-cess to Wonder Mountain, Mount Skokomish and the southern part of The Brothers Wildernesses.

The low snow pack makes high elevation lakes such as Elk, Jeffer-son, Lena, or Mildred Lakes a great early season choice this year. These areas provide opportunities for hiking, camping as well as fishing. Take a short hike within old growth forest around Spider Lake, or climb the challenging Mt. Rose Trail for views of Hood Canal, the Olympics, and the Cascades.

Achieving Garden GloryAshley Brady | Brady Trucking & Landscape Supply

As the weather begins to warm, our thoughts naturally turn to the outdoors – our lawns, garden beds, and Pinterest-worthy dream spaces. After you pull weeds and mow the lawn, what do you need to get your plot in tip top shape?

Every yard is different. So, depending on the acidity of your soil, what you hope to plant and the budget you are working with-in you might consider one of the following:

Certified Organic CompostAn organic compost made of finely ground decomposed plant matter; it is a great ad-dition to your soil to help retain moisture and utilize nutrients.

Evergreen MulchFinely ground, aged evergreen clippings that are highly acidic; it is a perfect appli-cation for mulching around acid-loving plants like blueberries and rhododendrons.

Garden MixA three-way mix of mushroom compost, topsoil, and sand; it is an ideal choice to prep vegetable garden; you will be ready to plant directly in it.

Ground Cover BarkRanging in size from 3/8” – 7/8” of nug-gets and fibers, this fir product is void of any fine particles; it is an excellent looking and economical beauty bark choice.
