  • drew somewhere between 7,000 and 12,500 participants. Maybe it takes stripping to the buff to draw a terrific crowd.

In New York City they remain clothed and look quite fashionable. May marks a city-wide campaign by the department of transportation to promote the joys of cycling. Perhaps this is part of the reason the number of New Yorkers riding their bicycles in the past five years doubled. Around 236,000 people pedal around the city every day.

So whats going on this May in SLO? Lots and lots. Particularly exciting: Kidical Mass, Bike Fest in Arroyo Grande, Pedal to Paella and the Bike Month Blowout at the Creeky Tiki. The fashion show is making a come back and you might want to start shopping for tweed now; stores could easily be cleaned out by May.

Sure bike month is fun and all. Really, who doesnt like to pedal around, socialize, ring a bell, laugh, shout, eat scones, cake, frosting, or paella. What, though, is underlying all this hoopla? Why Bike Month?

We go all out. Were known for going all out. A program of SLO Regional Rideshare, Bike Month has developed over the years into a full, abundant celebration of everything bicycle related. A young man wrenching at the Bike Kitchen in downtown SLO noted:

There is more county-wide involvement, not just events here in town. You get a larger sense of community. Plus, you see a lot of people who dont usually ride bikes getting involved.

Bike Months blossoming reflects the improvements made in the county. Bicycle facility advancement and programs are part of the goals for County Traffic Congestion Relief. In the past three years, we have seen the completion of the Bill Roalman Bicycle Boulevard, whose traffic diverters significantly reduced whizzing traffic. Over 500 people participated in Bicycle Education classes. There is a Bike Box at the intersection of Madonna and Higuera Streets, which if you have the confidence to pedal into, allows you to move first when the light turns green! There is the short but highly visible triumph of the completed Madonna Bike Path. We have rightly earned the League of American Bicyclists silver award.

More and more, people are dusting off old cruisers, purchasing commuter bikes, pumping up tires, adjusting saddles, stepping onto pedals, and entering the bike lane.

May is nationally recognized as bike month. Revelry, group rides, and two-wheel bike celebrations happen across our country during that final Spring month. Pedal Palooza is the creative and powerful expression of a vivacious bike culture in Portland, Oregon. Happening most of June, they describe their 52 events as bikey fun. Most of the rides are initiated by individuals with ideas as specific as the Mr. Mom Ride Full-Time Dads Unite! Of course, there is the famous naked ride . . . . Last year this ride in the nude

As a bicyclist you begin to breathe deeper, to be attentive, careful, thoughtful. These modes of awareness translate into a grounded way of participating in ones community. Bike Month concretely shows the connections between bicycling and our neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. Through specific events we discover how riding makes us caring, responsible members of our locale.

San Luis Obispo promotes biking as a viable and fun alternative to cars. It is one of the reasons we are recognized as such a healthy, strong, close- knit, self-sufficient, and resilient spot on this planet. The bicycle has a place here. Bike Month celebrates that progressive fact.

For such a small urban area we are BIG on the bicycle map.
