Why We Ride

Bike East Bay member Foresta Sieck-Hill

shares her love for Bike to Work Day

Why do you bike? I bike because it gets you exercise and then you feel great once you’re there. And I like talking to people along the way.

Most memorable Bike to Work Day? When I worked at Pedal Express, we delivered the kegs to Bike Happy Hour by bike. We put them on long haul trailers and had to go really slow so it wouldn’t get all shaken up. People were already waiting in line with their cups. When we came around the corner, they started cheering!

Favorite Energizer Station?I have only ever gone to Frank Ogawa! Pedal Express had a delivery downtown so I would stop by. It has a really big impact on me to see all the different types of people who ride bikes in one place at Frank Ogawa. You realize there’s a place for everybody in bike culture.

Bringing my daughter Josefina last year to Frank Ogawa was so meaningful. She was so excited to see all the bikes! I had just gotten her on a bicycle and I was definitely nervous about riding on busy streets. But it was great. With so many bikes out there on Bike to Work Day, drivers seemed to know what to do. It just felt really safe.

Local Partner Spotlight

City Slicker Farms celebrates the

opening of a new farm with a

Bike to Work Day Energizer Station

For 15 years, City Slicker Farms has been working to empower West Oakland residents to meet their needs for healthy, fresh food by promoting farming in reclaimed backyard space and unused plots. “At the heart of it is supporting underserved communities – low-income adults, children, seniors and people in transitional

housing – so that they can get healthy food,” says Samaki Dorsey, Community Partnerships Coordinator. This year, they’re hosting a new Energizer Station in West Oakland.

Bikes play an important role in City Slicker Farms’ work. Staff, volunteers and kids in the “Youth Crew” summer program use a bike trailer to haul harvested vegetables. “The kids learn that bikes are a way to get around and do work,” says Samaki. “It teaches them independence from cars. They don’t need to rely on someone to give them a ride somewhere.”

City Slicker Farms is taking a big step forward this year by opening the West Oakland Farm Park, a farm and community space on Peralta Street near 28th Street. It will include a community garden, a demonstration nutrition area, beekeeping space, a playground, and plenty of space for community groups to visit and host events. Samaki describes it as “more than a park; it’s an activated space for everyone to enjoy.” They’re working with the City of Oakland to install a bike corral on Peralta Street to encourage folks to arrive by bike.

Community Partners keep Bike to Work Day rollingCity Slicker Farms is just one of the hundreds of community partners that Bike East Bay works with to encourage thousands to ride on May 12. Every single Energizer Station is hosted by a bike-friendly business, community organization, city staff or neighborhood group. This year, Bike East Bay is bringing Bike to Work Day to more neighborhoods than ever, with ten new Energizer Stations in Richmond, Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward and Livermore.

Pedal over to 2847 Peralta Street to check out

the West Oakland Farm Park, and visit their

Energizer Station on May 12 to get your free Bike

to Work Day bag!

The local bike movement grows each year on Bike to Work Day thanks to Bike East Bay members like Joe Ferrera. This year, he will be volunteering to sign up new members at Energizer Stations. “I know that as a bicyclist, the more bicyclists I get involved, the more things will improve around me,” says Ferrera. “It’s not

something just a few people can do on their own.”

Bike East Bay (formerly the East Bay Bicycle Coalition) founded the Bay Area’s first Bike to Work Day in 1994 to get more people on bikes. The event has grown by leaps and bounds: this year over 20,000 people are expected to visit the 130 Energizer Stations spread around the East Bay.

While Bike to Work Day is a gateway for first time riders, Bike East Bay knows it takes better biking conditions to keep them riding year-round. A recent study conducted as part of Berkeley’s bike plan update showed that 70% of residents are interested in biking but are concerned about road conditions. “That’s why we need to connect our cities with a safe and complete network of bike lanes,” says Ginger Jui, Bike East Bay’s membership manager.

Bike East Bay is pushing cities to build protected bike lanes, which physically separate bicyclists from car traffic using barriers or parking. This Bike to Work Day, you can try out the protected bike lanes newly striped on Telegraph Avenue in downtown Oakland, Fulton Street in Berkeley and Christie Avenue in Emeryville.

Bike East Bay Membership Gets You a Bigger BagJoin Bike East Bay as a member to get the most out of Bike to Work Day. Your support will improve streets for bicycling in the East Bay and encourage more people to ride.

Everyone who joins or renews at select Energizer Stations will get a special membership perk: a BIGGER Bike to Work Day bag! The bigger bag also includes a Chinook Book, which gives you discounts with local, sustainable businesses ($20 retail value). Your membership pays for itself with discounts at over 70 local bike shops and retailers.

The East Bay is home to many bike-friendly businesses and each year, Bike East Bay recognizes three that go the extra mile. This year’s winners are kW Engineering, the Berkeley YMCA, and Mountain Hardwear.

kW Engineering is a small engineering firm that does big work on conservation by refurbishing existing buildings for better energy efficiency. CEO Jim Kelsey describes it as “saving the world, one building at a time.” As a dedicated bike commuter, Jim brought his love of bikes into the workplace by remodeling kW’s building with bike-friendly features. The company has installed wall-mounted bike racks on each floor and provides regular bike tune-up sessions for employees. Every May, kW employees compete in the Team Bike Challenge and kW gives awards for achieving mileage goals, with prizes including bike lights and messenger bags.

The Berkeley YMCA goes above and beyond to encourage both staff and members to get out and ride. The Y recently moved the offices of ten employees to make space for a large indoor bike parking room. “In the last three or four years we’ve been putting biking as a top goal for members to get to the Y,” said Executive Director Hae Won Row. A recent survey showed that 15% of members chose to bike to the Y, and Hae Won aims to raise that to 25% in the next two years. During Bike Month, the Y rewards members and employees with a punch card system. Every time you arrive at the Y by bike, you get your card punched, and the card is redeemable for prizes. Hae Won is also a supporter of the proposed protected bike lanes on Milvia Street and is excited about the arrival of bike share in the East Bay later this year.

Mountain Hardwear makes commuting to work a breeze, with indoor bike parking, showers, and even a washer and dryer for rainy day bike rides. Add a fleet of cruiser bikes for navigating headquarters and you can see why this business took the cake in the large company category.

As a member of Mountain Hardwear’s culture committee, Zachary Alexander looks for new ways to integrate bike culture into the company. Zach believes that “As more people ride, it’s a positive feedback loop, and more people want to try it out.” To support these new riders, employees post their bike commute routes on a large map in the bike parking area, inviting others to join

them on their rides to and from work. A significant number of Mountain Hardwear workers commute from Marin, and Zach expects to see bike commuting get a bump when a new bike path opens on the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge in 2017.

East Bay Students Lead the Charge

for Bike-Friendly Schools

Around the East Bay, students are taking action to encourage classmates to bike to school. Supported by Alameda County’s Safe Routes to Schools program as well as national Safe Routes grants, these young leaders are inspiring positive change in their school environments.

A Bike Mural for Cesar Chavez Middle SchoolUnion City has some awesome new bike art to boast about. Until recently, Cesar Chavez Middle School’s bike parking area was easy to overlook, hidden behind a drab wall. The Student Leadership Class, however, thought the bike area should be beautiful and inviting. The Safe Routes to School National Partnership helped them secure a grant from the NFL’s 50 Fund, and students designed and painted a mural with the help of Illuminaries, a professional street artist group.

The mural depicts hawks, snakes, and cats bursting forth on bikes and skateboards, emblazoned with the words “LET’S RIDE!” The bike parking area used to be hidden and ignored; now it’s cool and attention-grabbing, and more students than ever are inspired to bike to school. The bike racks are a lively space that Cesar Chavez students are proud that they helped create.

Winning Bike Access at Foothill HighFoothill High School has a traffic problem. With many students driving alone to get to school, nearby streets become packed and parking is scarce. Senior Reshma Pyala and the school’s Safe Routes Committee audited the school’s bike and pedestrian access, and they found several glaring problems. The best way to bike or walk to Foothill is through the adjoining Oakhill Park, but the park’s unpaved paths turn to mud in the rain. To top it off, the school didn’t have nearly enough bike parking. “Bike racks were overflowing and students were locking their bikes to fences in the neighborhood,” says Reshma.

The Safe Routes Committee petitioned their Parent-Teacher-Student Association for funds to make improvements. Reshma described it as a great learning experience: “We had to validate what our group was about and prove that we were working toward something legitimate.” The PTSA and the City of Pleasanton were moved by the students’ presentation and provided $6,000 for new bike racks at Foothill. Bolstered by their victory, students of the Safe Routes Committee are now seeking to pave the Oakhill Park pathway to make it safer for biking.
