The Bilberry Alternative

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus) is a dark blue, edible fruit, similar to the common blueber-ry. During World War II, bilberry was usedby British bomber pilots, who believed ithelped their night vision. Bilberry has beena staple of European herbalism for hundredsof years, and has become one of the mostwidely used herbs in the United States forsupporting vision.

Bilberry is naturally rich in anthocyano-sides—a special class of flavonoid that givesthe berries their blue pigment.Anthocyanosides are powerful antioxidantswith an affinity for connective tissue.Bilberry supports the capillary integrity ofthe retina, plus the normal production ofrhodopsin, a substance in the rods of the reti-na that is necessary for night vision.

Studies suggest bilberry also may help theeyes adapt to variations in light intensity andmay increase circulation to the eye’s intri-cate network of tiny blood vessels.
