HOG Pen Maintenance

Now that the HOG Pen is being used regularly it requires consistent maintenance and

housekeeping. We need volunteers to clean the bathrooms, kitchen and podium. This

program will involve cleaning the HOG Pen twice a month. We are looking for

volunteers to pick a month each and clean the pen. To reward those who volunteer

their dues for the next year will be paid for by the chapter. The chapter will supply the

cleaning materials`. If interested contact Linda Smith @ [email protected].

Chapter Meeting

It’s that time of the year when the monthly chapter meetings move to Saturday. The

next meeting will be held on Oct. 30 at 5pm. To kick off the Fall/Winter riding season,

the new meeting day and time we will be offering a Low Country Boil. The last time we

did a LCB it was a delicious and great success so come out on Saturday Oct 30th.

2010 GA HOG Rally News

At this year’s GA HOG Rally Great South HOG was recognized as the chapter having

the most people to attend (76) and the most people to volunteer. We also came in 2nd

place in the chapter challenge. Thanks to Pat Greene, JJ Long, Karl McCarthy and Paul

Van Wagner who participated in the grueling challenge. The 2011 rally will be

sponsored by Atlanta HOG and be held in Hiawassee GA.

Photos

We have a new patch program for all you picture takers. If you submit 24 publishable

pictures in a year from Great South HOG rides and events you will earn a chapter

photographers rocker for your jacket or vest. All pictures are to submitted to

[email protected] and be resized to 800x600. If you do not resize your

pictures to 800x600 they will not count and will not be published.

HOG’s TRAVEL

We had a new feature added to the HOG Holler in the past issue titled HOG’s Travel. If

you have taken a trip on your bike, taken pictures and want to tell your story and have it

published. Send your article and pictures to [email protected]

Chromed Patch

For those of you who collect Chrome Points to get your Chrome patch you only have

until the end of November to get enough points. Remember you have to have points in

all four categories to qualify for your patch. Contact Tim Summers at

[email protected] to find out how many points you have or need to qualify

for the patch.

Reminder GS HOG member’s can only bring a particular guest to rides and/or events a total of three times. This is a HOG bylaw. After that guest has participated in three rides/events they will have to join as a full member or associate member of National HOG and the chapter to participant in more events. These visits will be tracked by the Activities Director. If you want to sponsor your spouse and children, HOG members can sponsor multiple associate members.

MSF Advanced Rider Course

This is a special opportunity for only Great South Chapter Members

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 14TH, 2011 ALL DAY

The Course runs 1 day and is built on the curriculum of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation® (MSF) Experienced Rider CourseSM Suite. It is taught by devoted MSF and H-D® Certified Instructors.

The course focuses on improving these skills:

Control at low speeds

Risk management

Limited space maneuvers

Cornering judgment

Swerving and stopping quickly on straights and in curves

Multiple curve maneuvers and surmounting objects

When you're done, you'll earn an Advanced Rider Course pin and patch set, and a MSF Experienced Rider Course completion card that may qualify you for a discount on motorcycle insurance. With a couple extra maneuvers, you can earn an endorsement for M on your DL….

To top it off the course has been deep discounted by GSHD.

It is only $100. AND, you turn in the completed paperwork to mother HOG and receive a rebate of $50 Harley bucks. WHAT A DEAL.

Here’s the catch – the first 12 riders that get to Kevin Lloyd, register and prepay, are the lucky participants. But hurry, there are already three signed up as of last Friday.

Grillers Needed

Fellow GS HOG members!! Come out and support Great South Harley by donating 3 hours of your time any Saturday to grill hot dogs and burgers. Get to know other HOG member, recruit new ones to our chapter and talk bikes and rides (exaggerated truths AKA lies are encouraged). Let Great South Harley know especially Gene and Kevin that we appreciate how much they support the HOG chapter. I know we all enjoy our GS HOG discounts and having use of the HOG Pen. This opportunity is available every Saturday from noon to 3 PM. If you can spare a few hours on Saturday please contact Tim Summers at [email protected] and let him know you are willing to help out. Your support is greatly appreciated!

DINNER RIDE -- GSHD (C) – EVERY THURSDAY, AT 6:30 PM

Meet at the Hog Pen to plan and decide on a dinner destination. These are usually very easy and short rides to a local eatery. The camaraderie is great and it is a good time for new members to meet others in the chapter. One of the chapter’s most popular rides.

10/8 Friday Fall Leaf Ride RC Andy Andresen KSU

7:00am 4 pig

We leave GSHD at 7 am on Friday morning and go by the Atlanta H-D pavilion to join

with some old friends. It’s northbound into the Appalachians, embarking on a scenic ride

of your life. This experience includes actually smelling and feeling the mountain air, free

of charge! Enjoy the fall colors in north GA and North Carolina on a 3-day ride through

some of the most beautiful mountains in the country. Mountains and valleys, forests and

glades, wild streams and lakes and peaceful ponds. Perhaps you’ll spot an eagle or

hawk or bear or deer. Have you ever traveled the lesser known Wayah Road?

Dramamine optional…Just imagine the possibilities. Lunch we’ll do at the River’s Edge

in the Nantahala Gorge on day one. We’ll explore the wonders of the Blue Ridge

Parkway on day two. Linville Viaduct, Linville Falls, Grandfather Mountain, the old

parkway and the new. Walk and eat in Blowing Rock and dip into the Linville Gorge

(North Carolina’s Grand Canyon). The third day finds us snaking our path thru Chimney

Rock and Lake Lure before traversing the Foothills Parkway and homeward bound. This

is a 4 pig ride due to the saddle time, distance, twisties, and weather. (There’s always

weather in them-thar-mountains) Due to many requests to leave the routing the same

as last year, I am pleased to do so unless the pre-ride presents a problem. If you wish

to sleep indoors for the two over-nights, 10 rooms at the Super 8 are blocked (they’re

the only act in town that will put up with us noisy riff-raff). All are non-smoking rooms

with two double beds and probably on the rear second floor again like last year. The

rate is $67.45 plus tax. You may be able to upgrade to a king size bed on the first floor

rear for only $5 more if you reserve early. When calling to make your reservation, tell

them it is in the name of HOG CHAPTER, Register the room in your name and on your

credit card.

Call before Friday October 1st to reserve – after that all rooms blocked under HOG

CHAPTER will be cancelled. When the ten rooms are gone they may or may not have

more rooms available. Rates in other nearby motels are between $103 and $139 per

night.

10/9 Sat New Member Orientation Activities Director Tim Summers

Newcomers Orientation – Open to ALL GSHOG Members! We are proud to offer a great way for new comers, and any interested ‘older’ members to learn about Great South Harley Davidson and Great South HOG! On the 2nd Saturday of every 3rd month we will be hosting a New Member Orientation at the dealership. Meet other new members and some who have been around the block a few times with GSHOG. We’ll kick off with Breakfast with a Tech – come share coffee and doughnuts and listen to a Technician talk about care and maintenance of your favorite ride. After that we’ll get a tour through the dealership – parts, motor clothes – meet the great people at GSHD eager to assist you in fulfilling your every motorcycle dream. Then upstairs to the classroom for a down and dirty on group riding 101, discussion on how HOG runs, figuring out the calendar, understanding the ‘pig’ ride ratings, learning how to turn your dream ride into a reality (tell your nearest Road Captain and offer to help plan) and answer any questions you may have. No orientation would be complete without a ride. So after learning about group riding, we’ll head outside for a short and easy ride. Our RCs (road captains for the uninitiated) have promised to share at least one of their rides around the area that will keep it fun and fresh. We’ll either find food on the ride, or head back to the dealership for grilled burgers and dogs. Ride rating 1-2 pigs. And after you have been through the orientation once, feel free to come by for any part of it in the future. It’s a great chance to meet new members, welcome them into the group, and go on a ride.

KSU @ GSHD @ 7:30 AM

Assemble @ QT @ 9:00 AM

If you haven’t rode this one, now’s your chance!!!

After meeting Steve and fellow HOG riders at the QT at GA 278 & GA 61 in Dallas, we will ride John's Mountain to the foothills of Lookout Mountain before heading up

Raccoon Mountain for a stop at the TVA Pump Station Reservoir. Further travel takes us over a one lane road across the top of the reservoir for a spectacular view across

many miles of canyon. Riding across the valley along Hwy 27 towards Suck Creek, we challenge our riding skills up and down the western face of Signal Mountain.

Warm your soul in the sunshine along the TN River until we reach the southern tip of Signal Mountain to embrace our tanks for yet another twisty experience. We will pass the Space Ship house, travel along the main Hwy 127 and down the eastern slope of Signal Mountain. Stop in Whitwell for some fuel and share our colorful stories. From here, we head north on Hwy 108 to Gruetli-Laager to be greeted by our last set of

twisties on Hwy 50 through Pelham and Hwy 41S into Monteagle.

Sunday morning we will head to Suwannee University for a bountiful breakfast and a stop at the Peace Memorial to pray for our fallen and active military.
