and The Publisher shoots...Welcome to sweetheart’s month. What ever hap-pened to mixed scotch doubles, and couples’ tour-n a m e n t s ?

Maybe someone should start having some fun with our sports again and mix things up. Did all these “just for fun pool and dart functions die”? Maybe I’ll stop by some pool rooms and some of the bigger bars and put a bug in their ear. Is it just all about the money, what money right? That’s what I thought. When the fun comes back, our games will peak again, the only thing missing is “you”. Maybe it’s time for the room and bar owners to rally around the ta-ble again and see if we can light some fires. Remember the old saying, “united we stand divided we fall”? Well we’re doing pretty good at falling, aren’t we?

When we isolate thinking we are growing our sports we are actually stunting the growth, no one person, room or bar can be the savior. We must unite again, and I’m too damn tired and old to chase after anyone again to explain this. But if anyone wanted to pick my brain or listen about past mistakes and things that worked I’d gladly sit down with them.

Take your wife, favorite gal or guy out to celebrate Valentine’s Day to one of the great bars or rooms around our beautiful valley. It is important that we all support our local bars and rooms, and, if you have suggestions for your favorite places, let the owners know. Let them know what

would interest you and bring you into their establishments more often; I’m a firm believer we need to change SOMETHING about our bars especially.

We lost a few friends of the bars and our sports in the last few months, please remember them in your prayers and support any benefits that are taking place for them. Let their lives teach us how precious and short life really is, be kind to each other, know that peace of mind and happiness is the ultimate reward in life.

I’d like to start a new writing contest for all my readers, I will pay $20.00 for the best submitted article or story about a pool or dart experience. It must be between 200 and 300 words, can include 1 picture if you would like, but not necessary. All articles, stories and/or pictures submitted WILL become property of Blue Sky Publishing and may be used in future issues without writers permission or payment, only 1 winning article for pool and 1 for darts will be awarded the $20.00 prize for the month submitted. Inland Reef in Virginia Beach, VAThe 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – conducted its sixteenth stop at Inland Reef in Virginia Beach, VA, Saturday, January 14. The $1,000-added 9-ball scratch tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 26 players. On the A-side, Bill Duggan (Virginia Beach, VA) beat Bill Mason (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-3, while Eric Moore (Virginia Beach, VA) defeated Dave Perry (Virginia Beach, VA). Duggan then took the hot seat with a 5-1 effort over Moore. On the B-side both Joe Hughes (Virginia Beach, VA) and Vern Steinke (Virginia Beach, VA) were relegated to 7-8th place to the cues of Ray Reyna (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-2 and Joey Glover (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-2 respectively. Both Reyna and Bill Mason were eliminated in the next round by Dave Perry (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-4 and Joey Glover (Virginia Beach, VA) 5-4. Glover then ousted Perry at 4th place by a score of 5-4; but Joey settled at 3rd place in the next round with a loss to Eric Moore in the B-side finals. The tourney finals almost went two

sets, but Bill Duggan hung on to victory by a 5-4 margin over Eric Moore in set #1 for the title!By virtue of Dave Perry being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2012 Lucasi Hybrid ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS.The Tour showcases one stop this Saturday, February 4: a $500 added 8-Ball Tourney [not open to Elite, Advanced or A players] at Cue Masters Billiards in Dubuque, IA (contact Bill Kramer at 563-599-7884). Further information, entry details and schedules for the 2011/2012 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org.

Knowing that each year, the vast majority of pool leagues finish up in late March/April, the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) has now managed to secure the traditional mid-May Vegas dates of May 11-18th for 2013 and beyond at the Tropicana Las Vegas for their annual Lucasi Hybrid Cues ACS National 8-Ball/9-Ball Championships. What a combination! Vegas dates that have proven to work best for their member leagues, no tourney conflicts and an even better tourney hotel and site on the Vegas Strip.

As stated by ACS President Mike Wilson:

“With VNEA continuing to stage its Vegas event at Bally’s in late May and the BCAPL moving its Nationals to late July in 2013, the ACS will now be offering the most attractive traditional mid-May dates for drawing the nation’s pool players to Las Vegas! Add to that a high quality, newly-modernized host hotel at the Tropicana Las Vegas with the most affordable rates in one of the most exciting locations on the Strip; the ACS has hit a home run.”

The American CueSports Alliance today, as a non-profit, member-governed National Association, continues to offer the best overall member package available to independent leagues of all kinds in the United States:

• $10/ player league Sanction Fee to any pool league

• A free Lucas-Hybrid cue for each league

• Referee and Instructor Certification programs

• Lucasi-Hybrid All American Tour

• Twelve affiliated State Associations and their Championships

• ACS Midwest 8-Ball Championships

• Affiliation with the CCS and their Championships in Canada

• Lucasi Hybrid Cues ACS National 8-Ball/9-Ball Vegas Championships

It’s looking good for Vegas 2012! Thanks to a flood of tournament entries and Tropicana reservations received already for the ACS Nationals this May 5-11, the Tropicana has expanded the ACS room block with attractive rates in the upcoming months! For information on the ACS, check out www.americancuesports.org.

The ACS is a non-profit, national organization dedicated to heightening the interest and awareness of cue sports through the support and sanctioning of organized competition throughout the United States.

Tamii’s “Catch” Winner ...and some other entries

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND:

My name is Fred Flory (no alias yet! LOL) and the band is

Cactus Chainsaw!!

INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Throat

DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC:

Cactus Chainsaw is a blend of old school metal with a

potent dose of hard core that will leave at least the first 10

to 20 rows picking up facial fragments off the floor! Brutal!!!

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO

PLAY/STARTED SINGING AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

I was playing in bars in my home town by the time I was 14.

I was inspired by Rob Halford and Graham Bonnet mostly.

IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD

WHO WOULD IT BE?

I’d have to say Jimmy Page.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL

TIME? My Sharona! LOL

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ?

I can’t say for sure.

WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE?

Jagermeister!

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG

YOU PERFORM?

We have a song called "Black Water" that kicks ass!

WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH?

We have our first gig with me fronting the band at the end of

the month. It’s a private birthday party for Joe’s sister.

DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR NEWSPAPERS?

Yes I do as matter of fact. I’m looking at one now. Lol

DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE YOU

AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING?

Yes we do and yes we are.

CONTACT/BOOKING INFO:

[email protected]

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND:

I’m Alexandra Luciak, the bassist for the Metal band,

’Sulfuric Angel’

INSTRUMENT YOU PLAY: Bass

DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC: Definitely Metal!

The closest I can come to in describing our sound is... If Iron

Maiden and Pantera had a baby, it would sound like us!

We’re classified under Heavy Metal/Progressive Metal

/Thrash Metal for our official genres on Reverb Nation and

MySpace though.

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO

PLAY/STARTED SINGING AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

Quite young!!! My parents were Russian so there was

always classical music in the house... opera, ballet, etc. My

grandfather was the orchestra conductor for the Odessa

City Orchestra in Odessa, Ukraine! They made me start

playing the violin at age 8 but I was too ADHD to practice but

then I got an acoustic guitar at the age of 14 and discovered

rock and roll. Then I got an electric and it was all Led

Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Iron

Maiden... everything that was pre-1984 metal!!!

IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD

WHO WOULD IT BE?

Jamming with ’Tool’ would be really awesome...As far as the

’no longer living’ category goes, probably Dimebag Darrell.

Now THAT’S legendary metal guitar!!!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL

TIME?

I really dig Christmas carols for ’cheesy’ factor.

Probably ’Joy To The World’ or ’O Come All Ye Faithful’

because they just burst into this super-dramatic happiness

and the thing that actually makes them cheesy is the holiday

factor and how everyone knows them but it’s not THEIR fault

because they’re actually classic pieces composed by the

masters hundreds of years ago!

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ?

Definitely ’Joe’s Grotto’!!! Greatest sound, greatest bands,

greatest people and you’ll always find me there on a

weekend night regardless!

What’s your poison/drink of choice? I love quality bottled beer or wine. Probably Beck’s light or any lighter colored

brew because this is Arizona and the warmer climate

Page 9: Billiards Table Talk Newspaper Feb. 2011

…continued from page 8.

doesn’t usually suit a heavy, dark brew or vintage. For

wines, I LOVE Maynard’s ’Anna Goat’ from Merkin

Vinyards... It’s the BEST!!! I’m also herb-friendly but I don’t

believe in the use of poisonous chemicals on the human

body.

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG

YOU PERFORM? ’I Can’t Believe’

I just LOVE that song because it’s got this intricate bass run

in the verses and then the break stops and just rings on the

bottom D... It’s just THUNDEROUS!!! It’s our singer Doug’s

favorite song too!

WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH?

We’re playing at O’Brien’s Sports Bar and Pub at 7829 N.

35th Avenue on February 11th!!!

DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR

NEWSPAPERS? Yes!

DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE YOU

YOUR NAME AND/OR THE NAME OF YOUR BAND:

Element a440

MEMBERS:

Halo – Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Programming

Graven – Guitars

Ranie Mae – Bass

Animal – Drums

BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR BAND/MUSIC:

Element a440 delivers an intelligent brand of Edgy,

Hook-Heavy, Dark, Melodic, and Electronic rock that

enthralls its listeners. Spreading from the band to the

individual, the intense lyrics and seductive sounds merge

with the mind and body, through the crowd like an epidemic

until all are as one. A new album is currently in the works so

expect many great things from Element a440 this year.

HOW OLD WERE YOU WHEN YOU LEARNED TO PLAY

AND WHO INSPIRED YOU?

Graven - I really haven’t quite learned yet so its hard to say… but as far as influences go… all of the badass guitar players.

Ranie – I started playing when I was eleven and was

inspired by a huge range of artists.

Animal- I started around 41/2 and 5 years old and I was

inspired by Neil Peart, The Rev, & Vinnie Paul.

IF YOU COULD JAM WITH ANYONE ALIVE OR DEAD

WHO WOULD IT BE?

Animal – Well if it were someone that was alive it would

be Neil Peart. As far as dead I would have to say A7X.

The Reverend.

Ranie – Les Claypool

Graven - Jammin’ with Zombies? I’m totally down for that, otherwise I’d love to jam with Dimebag, Randy Rhoads, Glenn Danzig & the Misfits

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE "CHEESY" SONG OF ALL

TIME?

Animal – Beastie Boys “girls”, Stepbrothers “boats and

hoe’s”, Jan Terri’s “losing you”, Rebecca black’s Friday.

Graven- Everythin’ from the 80’s.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY AT IN AZ?

Graven – It’s a tossup between The Marquee and the Mesa Amphitheatre.

Halo – I agree with Graven but I would also add Joe’s Grotto.

Animal- Joe’s Grotto

WHAT’S YOUR POISON/DRINK OF CHOICE?

Halo – Jack and Coke

Ranie – Bacardi Razz and Code Red

Animal- jack & coke, & New Castle

Graven- Free

WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER TO BE THE BEST SONG

YOU PERFORM?

Graven – All of them

Animal – Parasite, or NDQ

WHERE ARE YOUR GIGS FOR THE NEXT MONTH?

Ranie – March 24th at Joes Grotto – Festival of Flesh 21+

Halo - We are also currently working on finishing our new

record titled “Whips, Knives, Candles and Quills “that we

are hoping to have done early in 2012.

DO YOU HAVE A STORY ABOUT YOUR BEST SHOW

EVER?

Graven – All of them are our best shows

Ranie – Well we got the cops called one time…

Animal- our best show I think is when we had a three out of

the four members of Element A440 halo, Graven, and I. We

had a show at the plantation and we made us sound like we

had all four of us there it was awesome. To advertise on dethkitn's page,

call Tamii @ (602) 366-9415

To advertise on dethkitn's page, call Tamii @ (602) 366-9415

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A MUSICIAN?

Graven – Playing music and everything that comes along

with it.

Animal- my favorite thing about being a musician is doing

what I love and being able to interact with the fans after the

shows.

Halo- I love having the ability to pour out feelings into song

and then perform those songs on stage! I guess I would say

that the music isn’t really designed for the audience. It is designed around the band creating something that we feel

is good. It then becomes truly rewarding when an audience

can identify with it and sing along.

Ranie – I love everything about being a musician, I can’t say I have a specific favorite thing about it.

DO YOU READ TABLE TALK AND DART STARR

NEWSPAPERS?

Halo - I have started to read it since I found out it existed.

DO YOU PLAY PRIVATE PARTIES AND ARE YOU

AVAILABLE FOR BOOKING?

Halo – I guess it would depend on the party. Is there naked

people?

The United States Snooker Association (USSA) is pleased to announce that the Embassy Billiards Club in San Gabriel, California, will host the 2012 United States National Snooker Championship from May 25-27.

With fourteen full-sized British made Riley snooker tables, all which are kept in immaculate condition, the Embassy Billiards Club has always proved to be a popular host of the Championship having been played there first back in 1995.

The Club’s most recent staging of the Championship was back in 2010 which saw Ahmed Aly travel from Brooklyn, New York, to successfully defend his title. Aly will also be present as the number one seeded player

again this year, hoping to achieve that same feat having won the title again last year for a third successive time.

Alan Morris, the Executive Director of the USSA, said: “The Embassy Billiards Club has a long tradition in hosting snooker’s premier annual event in the United States, and we are very happy to be back there for the 2012 Championship. The Club has always been very generous in showing its support for the hosting of the event, and offering a warm welcome to all the players from around the United States.” He added: “The Board is also considering a new Championship format to be implemented this year, which we believe will be much fairer to all players and eliminate any meaningless Group matches.”

2nd Avenue Corner Pocket in Cedar Rapids, IA

The 2011-2012 Lucasi Hybrid Cues All American Tour – presented by the American CueSports Alliance (ACS) – showcased its seventeenth Tour stop of the year at 2nd Avenue Corner Pocket in Cedar Rapids, IA, Saturday, January 14. The $500-added 9-ball handicapped tourney on 7-foot Valley bar boxes drew 20 players. In the A-side semifinals, Scott Hargens (Cedar Rapids, IA) [rated a “7” on a regional rating system used] took down Craig Rice (Cedar Rapids, IA) [7] 7-1, and Anthony Garcia (Cedar Rapids, IA) [7] clipped Scott Kitto (Cedar Rapids, IA) [8] 7-7. Hargens then took the hot seat over Garcia by a 7-5 margin.

On the B-side Craig Rice recovered from his A-side semifinal loss to eliminate D.J. Wolrab (Cedar Rapids, IA) [5] 7-4 – relegating Wolrab to 5th place, while Randy Tollefson (Vinton, IA) [5] upset Kitto 5-4, tying Scott with Wolrab. Rice then clipped Tollefson at 4th place by a 7-4 score; and Craig continued his hot hand with another hill-hill win – over Anthony Garcia 7-6, eliminating Garcia at 3rd place. Craig Rice then sought to avenge his loss to Scott Hargens, and he did so in a decisive

manner – upending Hargens in two 7-5 sets for the title!

By virtue of Craig Rice being the highest-finishing ACS member in the event, he qualified for a free 9-Ball singles entry into the 2012 Lucasi Hybrid ACS Nationals at the Tropicana Las Vegas – courtesy of the ACS. The ACS wishes to thank sponsors Lucasi Hybrid Cues, Championship Billiard Fabric and Nick Varner Signature Cases for their support in donating “Value-In-Kind” product for this and all stops on the Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour. Sponsorship opportunities and tour stop openings are still available for the 2011/2012 All American Tour by contacting the ACS.

The Tour showcases one stop this Saturday, February 4: a $500 added 8-Ball Tourney [NOT open to Elite, Advanced or A players] at Cue Masters Billiards in Dubuque, IA (contact Bill Kramer at 563-599-7884). Further information, entry details and schedules for the 2011/2012 Lucasi Hybrid All American Tour are available at www.americancuesports.org.

~Robert Brown

I had the honor of setting down and doing an interview with one of the greats in billiards. A man who made his living playing “on the road”. Four time 1 pocket champion and the 1st inductee into the 1 Pocket Halls Of Fame are just a few of his awards. Grady ”The Professor” Mathews . Author of a book called “Aim High and Kiss Low” and 17 DVD’s.It was for me, a very fun afternoon. Along with the answers, he told me stories. Some made us laugh and oth-ers were very emotional. After the interview he invited us to his home to see some of his memorabilia and trophies. When I left Mr. Mathews home I went home and watched “the Color of Money”. I looked for a character named Dud. Sure enough, it was him.Q) How old were you when you started playing.A) 13 in San Mateo.Q) What got you interested in the game?A) Father was a bowler. Got tired of watching and started playing on pool tables.Q) Who was your biggest influence or mentor when you were developing your skills?A) Eddie “ The Knoxville Bear” Taylor, Erving “the Deacon” Crane, “ Portland Don” Wat-son.Q) Why did you pick billiards over another game?A) I like golf. I have caddied for some pretty high profile people. Golf was expensive and I just kind of fell into playing pool. I went to the same high school as fellows named Jim For-gosy, Barry Bonds, Tom Brady.Q) Did you ever play in leagues?A) Only once, in the 70s. The team I was on won the national championship. It wasn’t a big deal to me.Q) Do you remember what league that was?A) I don’t even remember. The reason I played in it was some of my best customers played in it and they asked me to play, so I did.I couldn’t make any of the sports teams. I was a pretty good athlete back in Missouri. When I moved to California there was over 2000 kids. My new friends and I thought we were dis-criminated against. We tried out for baseball. We hit every

pitch, caught every ball, every throw was thrown. Still we didn’t even make the 2nd day. Even high school sports you get politics in there. You don’t have a chance. I wouldn’t trade my life for anything anyway.Q) What, and against who was your toughest match?A)i have played a lot of tough matches. Leonard “bugs” Rucker, he was 1 of my toughest 1 pocket matches. He was a great black 1 pocket champion from Chicago.Q) What’s the 1 match that stands out as your most fun match?A) I don’t know … I guess the most rewarding match was the night I won $60k.Me, “that would be a fun night”!Grady. “Well. I raised a family on no entitlements. I don’t know how I did it. I have no idea. Because it was hard. I had the same bills that everybody else did. Sometimes I would get $10k in debt and I would go on the road, I wouldn’t come home until I had all the money. Anyway, it was interesting.Q) Do you remember who you won the $60k from?A) There was this famous partner. Me and a guy named Bill Rosenbaum were partners against Keith McCredie, he is a famous player (he was in the Color of Money also) and a prominent Seattle attorney named Harry Blattis.Q) What, when and where was your 1st major title?A) I won the One-pocket championship 4 times, 83, 84, 85, and 95. I won some other tourna-ments but there has always been the question “what exactly is a major tournament?”Q) Do you consider the Olympics a good venue for this sport?A) It would be great if they can keep the politics out of it.Q) What do you think would have to happen for that to come about?A) They have been lobbying for it for some time now, the prevailing organizations and prominent players. I’m not sure what it would take.Q) How important is physical fitness?A) Oh … I think it is very important. Let me give you an example; my longest match was 90 hours. If a guy

AN AFTERNOON WITH A LEGEND

showed me a stack of hundreds this thick, I had to be in shape. That’s why I could outlast most people because I was in shape. I was a runner … I could play a long time.Q) The oldest mention of billiards is 1406 with Mary, Queen of Scotts. It has come a long way from kings and queens to the common man. Where do you see our sport 100 years from now?A) I’m not sure they will ever achieve perfection. In my career I always tried to achieve per-fection. Let me give you an example, in straight pool, a 150 point game is the length of a championship match. So perfection would be a 150 ball run. But, that’s not real perfection. If I run 150 balls, I’m not going to have perfect position every time. You get out of line and have to adjust. These guys today, they play so good. So , 100 years from now , I see them playing near perfect if not perfect games.Q) What advice would you give to up and coming young player?A) Build a resume! Janette Lee is a

multi-millionaire. She used to get advice from people like me and Buddy Hall and we would practice with her. But… she had a resume. She got good ( at pool ) and good endorsements. Now she gets $20K for an appearance fee.Q) Your book “Bet High and Kiss Low” came out in 2001. Is there anything you would like to add to it now?A) If I had it to do over again (when I get healthy I might rewrite it), I would take the bad things out of it and there are some things I would like to add to it. Some interesting games and matches I would like to write about.Q) Any thoughts or words of wisdom you would like to share?A) Rough translation of a funny story … “don’t piss off the female players. They are the ones on TV now.I would like to thank Mr. Mathews for his time and hospitality. If you have a chance stop by Gradys Billiards and say hi.

MEET the FebruaryBartender of the Month:

AUDI A-6SUPERCHARGED SEDAN

Text and Photos by Chad HaireThe Audi A-6 sedan has two features. First, it’s expensive. The base price on mine started at $49,900. But of course you “need” all of the extra toys that jack the price, which came to $61,530. Secondly, this is a first-class ride. I drove it for a week and couldn’t find anything to complain about (except giving it back).

As a sport sedan, this delivers. The small 3.0 liter V-6 is supercharged with 310 horsepower, hooked to a great 8-speed (yes, eight) automatic gearbox. I reached a brisk real world 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds (unless you want to believe Motor Trend magazine, which listed a questionable 4.6 seconds time. They expect us to think a two-ton Audi with 310 horses can run as fast as a two-ton Mustang with 500 horses? Ain’t gonna happen, but M/T magazine has always been shelling out the bull). Handling, braking,

and steering are excellent. The suspension also has four adjustments for ride comfort/handling ability.

Another great feature is the interior. Audi has a reputation for assembling a fantastic cabin, and this one is top notch, with beautiful materials, fine workmanship, and lots of bells and whistles properly spread. The main computer system for radio, suspension, navigation seems complex for first-time users, but easy to learn and simple to use once learned. In any case, it’s far superior to units found on other German cars.

When you’re not driving fast, the A-6 makes for a good soft luxury ride. If I had to drive from Scottsdale/Phoenix to New York right now, this is the vehicle I would take. A real smoothie and a great car if you can afford it.
