Billingbear Park Golf Course is one of the most popular and welcoming pay and play courses in Berkshire.

We passionately believe that we offer friendly, relaxed golf, in beautiful surroundings, on some of the best quality golf holes that you will find anywhere. Whether you are a beginner, or a low handicapper, we know that you will enjoy your time with us.

Our 18-hole course just outside Wokingham is split into the 9-hole Old Course and the 9-hole Par 3 New Course. Each nine holes offers its own set of challenges to keep you on your toes.

The greens and fairways would not be out of place on a high quality private course and are the perfect environment in which to improve your golf.

Billingbear Park Golf Course is owned by husband and wife Martin and Jacquie Blainey.

Martin began his career as a golf club professional. He always harboured an ambition to own his own golf course, one that was welcoming and friendly unlike the stuffy golf clubs of that time where golf was only for the wealthy, professional types.

In 1989 the couple built their first golf course near Letchworth, Hertfordshire. The course is now called Chesfield Downs and is part of the Crown Golf group.

The golf complex at Letchworth proved to be a huge undertaking. Employing some 40 people meant that almost all of the time was taken up with administration. Martin and Jacquie both knew that

this was not for them so when a buyer came along, they were happy to sell and begin their search for a small, manageable golf course where they could create their own unique atmosphere.

In 1997 they discovered Billingbear Park Golf Course – a little-known course with great potential – and realised their search was over.

They developed the par 3 course and set about minor things like getting electricity to the site and building a machine shed. The Old Course was also developed into a super test of golf.

For nine years the business operated from a portable building, but the atmosphere in that little shed was always friendly and welcoming. The present clubhouse was built in 2005 and the friendly atmosphere continues to this day.

Our Courses - The Old Course

The Old Course comprises the original nine holes at Billingbear Park. Over the years we have worked hard to ensure that it offers a high quality course that would not be out of place at a well-kept private club.

The course unfolds over a wonderfully natural setting that is a joy to walk around. Enjoy the wide variety of flora and fauna even when your game is not as good as it could be!

The course offers one par 5, five par fours and 3 par three holes that we hope will test even low handicap golfers.

If you want to play 18 holes, then you can go round this course twice, where from the men’s tees there are nine different tee positions. As you may imagine, this changes the way that the holes and the course are played considerably.

At its longest, off the medal tees, this represents a 5,886 test to a par of 69, just one more than the Standard Scratch Score. Alternatively, you can choose to play 9 holes on the Old Course and 9 holes on the par three New Course which offers an altogether different golfing challenge.

We have golf buggies available for hire if you would like one, but generally the course is quite easy to walk.

For those of you who own a SkyCaddie GPS system, you will be pleased to know that our courses are downloadable. We also have a SkyCaddie for hire by the round.

Our Courses - The New Course

Our par three course is a thing of beauty which also provides a test for experienced and novice golfers alike. There are two lakes that test your nerve and precision, but if you do not feel up to the challenge, then you can play off the red tees and avoid the water hazards.

Just like the Old Course, we have made sure that the quality of the New Course is our main objective and regular users can see that the work to make Billingbear into a super golf course continues all

the time. Beginners are welcomed onto the tricky par-three course and many of our golfers began there before graduating onto the beautiful main course. It is a great setting to learn the game and also to improve your short game, the quickest and most time-efficient way to lower your handicap. We must be doing something right, because the Berkshire County Ladies’ team use it to sharpen their short game before the start of the season.

It is always a good idea to warm up, stretch your muscles and get rid of any rustiness in your swing before taking to the course.

Billingbear Park has some good practice facilities to ensure your game is in shape for the challenge that awaits.

You will find a nine-hole putting green together with a chipping green which will enable you to gauge the pace of the putting

surfaces out on the course which are among the finest in the county. There is a practice bunker located beside the chipping green and two large nets are located just before the first tee.

Is there a particular shot that needs a bit of refining? Here is the place to do it, so that you don’t put your handicap at risk during your round.

We all know that golf can become an all-consuming passion and many of our golfers cherish the time they spend with us every week here at Billingbear Park.

But it is also a pastime that can frustrate and even infuriate at times when parts of our game start to unravel. Even professionals, who have struck hundreds of thousands of balls over the course of their careers, can struggle on occasion, so it is little wonder that the casual player is sometimes in need of help to put things right.

Billingbear Park does not have a full-time teaching professional as such, but we are still able to offer lessons to golfers in need of assistance.

We have several different PGA Golf Professionals who are more than happy to come here and give a golf lesson whenever required. Just ask in the clubhouse for further details.

Any part of the golf game can be worked upon, from ball striking to chipping and putting, but arguably one of the most beneficial is an on-course lesson, which allows the coach to have a look at your golf game in a true playing environment. It affords you the opportunity to play our wonderful courses while you learn, too!

If you would like to have an official golf handicap and play in club competitions, then why not join us today? For a very modest fee of less than £2 a week including golf union fees you can be a part of the friendliest golf club for miles.

Most of our members came here not knowing anyone. We paired them up with other like-minded individuals and they now have regular golfing friends who they play with on a regular basis.

In order to gain a handicap, golfers are required to complete three rounds of 18 holes on the Old (long) Course, and hand over the

signed scorecards. Our handicap secretary then puts the golfer onto the computer system so that their first handicap is given to them.

After that, you just play in our regular medals or stablefords which are held on the first and third Wednesdays each month and also at weekends. We also hold knockout competitions among the members. It is fun to play against other people to try to win the competition, but also against yourself in trying to improve your handicap.

Billingbear Park offers its members an excellent results service which is available online. The website www.masterscoreboard.co.uk allows them to follow results of club competitions and track their own handicaps. It also enables them to follow who is leading the race for the Golfer of the Year, the prestigious piece of silverware that is awarded in May to the Billingbear Park player who has amassed the most points throughout the season in club competitions. You will find the membership form on the downloads page of our website, www.billingbearpark.com.

Alternatively, we offer a nine-hole membership for those who only wish to play in nine-hole competitions. This is also priced very reasonably – far less than filling up the car with fuel, for example. You still need to put in the three eighteen-hole cards, but after that, you just play in the nine-hole competitions.

There are also two options for junior membership on the par three course, one offering unlimited free golf for payment of an annual fee, or the second a smaller up-front payment allowing access to the course at greatly-reduced rates.

Our members’ handicap card will be accepted anywhere, just like those of other clubs. This is because part of your subscription goes to the English Golf Union, as well as a payment to the Berks Bucks & Oxon Union of Golf Clubs. Of course, you can just play here for fun, but if you want to take your golf more seriously, then this is the best way to go. You learn so much more about yourself and your game when under the pressure of genuine competition, whatever the prize!

Each June we hold a members’ presentation, barbeque and par three competition. This is followed by the presentation of the prizes for the previous year’s competitions.

Golf societies return again and again to play at Billingbear Park. Once they have tried our famously well-manicured greens, our smooth fairways and delicious food and drink, they cannot wait to re-book.

Our unusual gem set in the picturesque countryside between Wokingham and Twyford, has two courses.

Our Old Course has eighteen tees and nine holes, making a very interesting course if you wish to play it twice.

Our New Course is the type of par three course that is played by the professionals before the Masters Competition begins in Augusta. Two of the holes can be played over lakes if you wish, with tee

positions to suit all standards of golfers. The course is very attractive and great fun to play.

The Clubhouse

We have been in our cosy and comfortable clubhouse since 2005. It is an ideal place to relax and chat about your round of golf, or other things, if it did not go well!

We are open every day of the year except Christmas Day, weather permitting. The welcome will be warm and genuine and our renowned Billingbear Park hospitality is available to all, so even if you have not played golf do come for a meal or a drink and enjoy the lovely views over the courses.

You can choose to eat in the comfort and warmth of the clubhouse, or, on those good weather days you can sit outside and watch your fellow golfers finish their rounds.

We have a standard menu, which you can view and download from our website, as well as a specials board each day for you to choose from.

For the early risers and those who just enjoy a bit of a feast, we have a delicious full English breakfast. We also offer an extensive children’s menu.

A range of soft and alcoholic drinks are available to accompany your meal.

We operate a dawn ‘til dusk policy with the clubhouse and therefore our opening times will vary during the course of the year.

Food orders are taken from 9am until 2.30pm and from 8am until 2.30pm on Sunday. We offer a roast dinner on Sundays which is very popular and it is advisable to pre-book by calling us on 01344 869259 to avoid disappointment.

Billingbear Park Golf Course is the perfect place for your parties, meetings and corporate events.

Our clubhouse and all its facilities are available for hire most evenings of the year. We have hosted some great discos, buffets, barbeques and hog roasts and are confident whatever your occasion we can make it special. We can comfortably seat up to 45 people, with full restaurant facilities, or accommodate about 90 guests for a less formal party. Guests can also spill out on to the patio area, which is a delightful setting, particularly on a balmy summer evening.

We also have space for a marquee, which has a wonderful view up the golf course and over the lake.

We operate a full bar and our catering is second to none. So if you are looking for an ideal venue for your reception, club evening or special birthday make sure you contact us.

Billingbear Park is about two miles north of Wokingham in Berkshire and easily accessible from the nearby A329M and the M4 motorways.

Because we are in a lovely rural location, it is not easy to locate us using Navigation Software, or Online Mapping Programmes like Google Maps, so better to follow the directions below.

Directions to the clubFrom the A329(M)Take the Wokingham exit and follow signs for Binfield. At the Travelodge traffic lights, turn left. At the Binfield Kitchen roundabout turn left. Go straight over the next roundabout, to the Warren Pub/Citroen garage roundabout where you turn right. Follow the road until you see the M4 bridge ahead of you. We are located on the right-hand side, just before the motorway bridge.

From WokinghamGo past Waitrose, straight over the traffic lights, get into the left hand lane and turn left at the T-junction. Follow this road to the mini roundabout and turn left, over the A329(M) and at the roundabout opposite the Citroen garage go straight over. Follow the road until you see the motorway bridge ahead of you and we are on the right-hand side.

Public transportThe nearest railway station is Wokingham, which is around three miles, or a ten-minute taxi ride away. Frequent trains run to London, either direct to Waterloo or to Paddington with a change at Reading. The fastest service takes around 48 minutes.
