From the Publisher…Happy New Year to all our Biltmore

friends and family! Along with the new yearcomes a time to reflect upon the previous yearand develop our resolutions for the yearahead. Maybe you would like some ideas onmaking some of your New Year’s resolutions.I would like to share with you BiltmoreLifestyles’ Top Five New Year’s resolutions.

1.) Get in shape - This is probably one ofthe most common and popular resolutions.Maybe you would like to join a gym, or just

exercise outdoors with a walk or a hike for free!2.) Spend more time with family and friends - When considering

this resolution, you never know how much time we have left with thoseloved ones, so make each moment count.

3.) Quit smoking or drinking - Those are resolutions that manypeople make, but they are much easier said than done. There are sev-eral support groups that may help with those resolutions.

4.) Get out of debt - This may be hard to do in this economy, butas my mentor and father figure, Gene Rouse, used to say, “Inch byinch, it’s a cinch!” Start with a small goal, and work up from there.

5.) Enjoy life more - Take little road trips here and there. Learn todo something you have always wanted to do like skiing, scuba divingor maybe even learning a new language.

Whatever your New Year’s resolution is, make it realistic, write itdown, and stick to it. Good luck! Until next month, Susan

Born out of the earnest and sweetly absurd writings the two authors discovered in their girlhooddiaries, The Secret Comedy of Women’s mix of sketch comedy, improvisation, audience participa-tion and hilarious songs and videos reminds audiences of the very funny and very charming simi-larities all women share. “It’s really like a girlhood reunion,” says Klein.

“Our show is highly universal, made personal. It is for all ages of women,” adds Gehring, whoalso said the show is perfect for group outings for “families, book clubs, social groups, professionalorganizations and work friends,” among others.

The Secret Comedy of Women, lovingly intended for female audiences, actively engages itsaudience with its high spirited, good-natured style of humor. With reviewers calling The SecretComedy of Women “an intelligent, astute mélange of scripted sketches and improv…truly bril-liant.” (Denver Post), it is no wonder that this “two hour celebration of bras, purses, showers, breastfeeding and menopause” (Pittsburgh Tribune) ran continuously for nearly two years at theDenver Centre for the Performing Arts andhas played to nearly a quarter of a millionwomen nationally.

The Arizona Biltmore Golf ClubThe Presidential Seal of Approval

With the recent passing of President George H.W. Bush and the subse-

quent tributes to our 41st President, many were reminded of his passion

for golf and his love of baseball. Arizona Biltmore Golf Club General

Manager Dick Bates fondly recalls President Bush’s visits to The

Biltmore, their mutual love for both sports and the fun surrounding other

Presidential stays.

“President Bush was incredible,” said Bates, who has been the General

Manager at the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club for nearly 30 years. “He was

a kind and genuine person who would sit and chat in my office while the

Secret Service would stand outside my door. He liked to talk about golf,

but he loved baseball.”

Bates enjoyed an eight-

year professional baseball

career with the Washington

Senators and Seattle Pilots

before hanging up his cleats

and glove and beginning a

career in golf management.

“After he found out I had

played for the Washington

Senators (pitcher from 1964-

1969), we talked a lot about

the history of the baseball club

and how the Washington

Senators became the Texas

Rangers,” continued Bates.

“At the time, his son George

W. was part owner of the

Rangers. During his visits to

The Biltmore, we talked more baseball than anything else. He’d come

down to club (from the hotel), have lunch at The Adobe Restaurant and

not even play golf – he just wanted to talk baseball.”

Biltmore Lifestyles 9

While Bush, Sr. shared a love of baseball with Bates, President Reagan

was also a frequent visitor to the Arizona Biltmore Golf Club before and

after his time in office.

“President Reagan played the most golf here because Nancy’s mother

lived on the Adobe Course’s 13th hole,” recalls Bates. “He came here all

the time and the Secret Service would be all over the course. It was some-

what comical how he drove the Secret Service crazy because he would

stop in the middle of his round to visit with Nancy and her mother.”

Hosting a sitting President often made normal golf operations a bit

more hectic – from blocking off the tee sheet for Presidential tee times, the

intensity of the Secret Service, to stashing the Presidential Limousine in

the maintenance building.

“We always had to keep a couple of holes open in front and behind the

President’s group for the Secret Service. It certainly made running a golf

course and accommodating other golfers very interesting.

When President Clinton came for a visit, we were asked to keep his

limousine in the maintenance building,” Bates remembers. “We were

allowed to take our employees over to the building to show them the car.

I remember the car door weighed probably 500 pounds and was difficult

to open. The entire car was bullet proof and was really different.”

Bates has had an inside look at the Presidential swings and golf

games of Presidents Reagan, Bush Sr. and Clinton, and his choice for

top golfer-in-chief might surprise you.

“A lot of folks don’t know just how good of a golfer President Reagan

was. He would come into my office before and after his round each time

he played. We chatted about Nancy, her mother and how the golf course

was his favorite place to be. I’m not sure what his handicap was, but he

was a pretty darn good golfer.”

With a history dating back 90-plus years, the Biltmore Golf Club has

also hosted Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Ford.

“We’ve had the pleasure of hosting numerous Presidents here at the

golf course and providing VIP service to them,” said Bates. “But honestly,

all of our guests and members are treated as VIPs, whether they’re guard-

ed by the Secret Service or not.”

The Arizona Biltmore Golf Club offers

five membership options. All memberships

offer preferred access to not only the

Biltmore’s two golf courses, but also to the

three outstanding courses at The Wigwam

Golf Club in Litchfield Park. Memberships

come with signing privileges at the award-

winning Adobe Restaurant, which is located

in the clubhouse. The Adobe Restaurant

serves breakfast, lunch and afternoon cock-

tails with happy hour starting at 2:00 p.m.

daily. In addition to an incredible assortment

of craft beers, the Adobe features a traditional

food menu with a contemporary twist. The

Biltmore’s membership options are reason-

ably priced and are available for individuals,

families, companies and juniors – age 40

years and younger.

For more information on the Arizona

Biltmore Golf Club’s membership options,

visit www.azbiltmoregc.com or contact Blake

Bates’ Presidential memories, stop by his

Holistic Health Tips for More Calm, Less Stress in 2019

The links between psychological stress and physical illness are wellproven: When you are under stress your body produces adrenaline, cor-tisol and other stress hormones that can impair its ability to fight offdisease and lead to cardiovascular and other disease.

“You owe it to yourself to find ways to reduce stress in your life foryour own mental, emotional and physical health,” Dr. Bradley Nelson says.

Dr. Nelson has trained thousands of healing practitioners world-wide and is recognized as an authority on how “trapped” emotions– unresolved feelings from negative and traumatic life experiences– affect mental, physical and emotional health. Some tips he rec-ommends for reducing stress in your life include:

Recognize the source: “Stress is nothing but an imbalance ofenergy, partly conscious and partly subconscious. The energythat you spend focusing on negativity and fear is directly propor-tional to your stress level,” Dr. Nelson says. “Possibly even morepowerful than these are energetic imbalances such as trapped emotions – the remnants of traumathat have become stuck in the body, leading us to unconsciously choose certain feelings, thoughtsand expectations.”

Find peace through forgiveness: “If there’s someone who has hurt you or wronged you insome way, and you haven’t forgiven them, your stress level will inevitably be greater than itshould. On the other hand, when we learn to let go and forgive others, we experience greaterpeace, calm, hope, gratitude and joy – all of which can improve our physical health as well as ouremotional outlook.”

Make intelligent and balanced decisions: “You are the pilot of your own course in life. Whenyou find yourself automatically being guided toward the emotion of anger, for example, wait a fewseconds and ask yourself if it would better serve you to change course. The ability to choose morepositive emotions is something all of us have, but it’s like a muscle that needs regular exercise inorder to serve us best.”

Release emotional baggage: Learning energy healing techniques can “lower your stress levelby quickly getting straight to the underlying causes of negative emotional choices and nagging, negative thoughts,” Dr. Nelson says. In live, on-air demonstrations he shares how to identify andrelease trapped emotions (free instructions are available at www.EmotionCodeGift.com.)

“Removing these underlying causes of stress will help your physical body to heal and functionoptimally, providing you with more energy to fulfill your commitments, meet your deadlines, andcreate a state of acceptance and forgiveness on a daily basis,” Dr. Nelson says.

About Dr. Nelson: Veteran Holistic Physician Dr. Bradley Nelson is one of the world’s fore-most experts in the emerging fields of Bioenergetic Medicine and Energy Psychology. He has cer-tified thousands of practitioners worldwide in helping people overcome unresolved anger, depres-sion, anxiety, loneliness, and other negative emotions and their associated physical symptoms. Hisbest-selling book, “The Emotion Code,” provides step-by-step instructions for working with thebody’s healing power. Happy New Year from The Adobe Restaurant!

By Pam Vincent, General Manager, TheAdobe Restaurant at Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

Happy New Year! As weturn the calendar to 2019, itfeels like a good time toreflect on 2018 and all that“we” talked about in mymonthly columns. I enjoywriting these articles andhope you enjoy readingthem.

In 2018, these articles ranged from the sweethistory of chocolate in February and celebratingpatio dining in April, to waving goodbye to strawsin September. We toasted Happy Hours inNovember and all screamed for ice cream inAugust. We learned a little bit more about ranchdressing and discussed the plethora of craft beerchoices at The Adobe.

Of all the topics touched upon in 2018, dogswere a reoccurring theme – hot dogs, wienerdogs, the dog-days of summer, and our dog-friendly patio. I guess you could say the starsaligned as 2018 was indeed the “Earth Dog Year”according to Chinese astrology.

As you kick-off the New Year and resolve toexercise more, remember The Adobe Restaurant’sconvenient canal-side location makes it a perfectpit stop for hikers, bikers and joggers to grab aquick bite or beverage. And, our dog-friendlypatio is a great spot for your four-legged exercisepartner to take a break.

Whether you’re out exercising, on a lunchbreak or simply looking for a delicious meal, Ihope to see you at The Adobe Restaurant inJanuary and throughout 2019. v

Make This the Season: That Golf Changes for You!By Tina Tombs, Golf Professional, Arizona Biltmore Golf Club

Golf season is creeping up on us in the Southwest. Most of the country isalready covered waist-high in the white stuff, while we are in short sleeveschasing the golf ball around our favorite course. We often forget just howlucky we are to live in Arizona’s paradise.

As the golf season approaches, I encourage you to take five minutes andthink about what you like about your game and what you want to improve onthis year. Grab a pad and pen and list the top five things you would like toimprove about your golf game. Try to think outside the box and answer ques-tions, such as:

• Was your warm-up routine long enough and did you stretch? • Did you hit a few chips, pitches, or bunker shots before going to the first tee? • How well did you manage your skill level on the course? • How was your focus and commitment on the golf course? • Did you risk too much when playing certain shots? • And finally, did you have a golf instructor that you worked with on a semi-regular basis

on your swing mechanics, mental focus and preparation? Did you take a playing lesson and reviewan on-course game plan?

If the answer to any, most, or all of those questions falls into the “no” category, perhaps beforethis golf season, you should devise a game plan that will address any weak links in your game.

All of the areas mentioned above are things I address on a very deep level with my competitiveplayers before their tournament season begins. Clearly, as a recreational player, we don’t expectyou to write golf’s version of War and Peace. However, who among us wouldn’t like to shave afew strokes off our handicap or shoot a career low round this coming season?

Do yourself a favor and go through the exercise described above. Take a few moments with padand pen in hand and think things through. Tina Tombs Golf has many options for you to choosefrom to improve your game and lower your score in the new year. We offer women’s and men’scoaching classes, junior classes and individual hour sessions, with cutting edge technology avail-able in individual sessions. Visit Tinatombsgolf.com and check it out.

Real Estate UpdateBy Roger Goins & Debbie Frazelle, Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage

What Is Bugging Your Home???The quiet moments are when you will hear the sounds!

Some forms of life will make no sounds audible to thehuman ear, however others will be quite noticeable such asthe wood pecker chipping away at the support beams ofyour home or the flock of pigeons dropping unmention-ables from your rooftop or from a perch above your win-

dow to the outside view. Then there are those energetic termites that silently take up residence

while chomping away at the wood or cellulose structures of your home withthe evidence of their damage not being visible until later. And, also, thosefour legged critters that usually wait until the quiet of night before adoptinga position inside your walls or roof structures to stake their claim. Thesemice and rats can be quite destructive and do spread disease.

Evidence of any of these pests should stimulate you to make a call toyour neighborhood pest/critter control company for immediate eradication!Your neighbors will also appreciate your proactive response. Your neigh-borhood realtor can direct you a good source for this service.

Wishing you a happy and productive New Year!! v
