They offer an aggressive closure system with a superior rubber-based adhesive suitable for most smooth surfaces including plastic. For indoor/outdoor use and is water resistant. The prepackaged products are available for the smaller projects.

Just peel the liner and press into place. The adhesive will achieve 80% bond strength in about an hour. Allow 24 hours for the adhesive to set before mating the hook and loop.

All surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of grease or oil before applying tape.1 Raw aluminum should be cleaned, sanded and cleaned again to ensure good adhesion.2 Stainless steel should be cleaned with Acetone, MEK or Heptan before applying.3 The 5305 and 5310 are used for aesthetics purposes. The 5341 and 5345 will provide better adhesion.4 For these materials, due to there open cell structure, the use of a primer is a necessity.

The following five questions are important to answer prior to choosing an adhesive. Having this information available will assist you when going through this guide or talking to a VELCRO® Brand USA Inc. representative so that you can choose the VELCRO® brand adhesive that meets your needs:

•WhatVELCRO® Brand material is the adhesive going to be on? Currently, our rubber-based adhesives are available on most of our products. Water-based acrylic adhesives are not currently available on our knit products or some of our HTH products.

S:4Step 1 in Choosing an Adhesive

Woven VELCRO® Brand tapes have a binder coat which firmly locks hooks & loops in the ground weave and helps prevent fraying of the tapes when cut. Due to this coating, many commercially available adhesives will not readily adhere to the back of this tape. Therefore, the use of a VELCRO® Brand pre-coated adhesive backing is recommended.

Pressure Sensitive Pre-CoatsPressure sensitive pre-coats are popular because of the ease of application. Simply remove the release liner and press the VELCRO® Brand tape in place. However, pressure sensitive pre-coats can creep under constant stress or deadload. A general rule of thumb is the greater the tack, the faster the creep; the lower the tack, the better the load-bearing characteristics. Pressure sensitive pre-coats should always be considered semi-permanent bonds. VELCRO® Brand pressure sensitive adhesives have been

engineered to offer specific performance characteristics to meet different requirements. See page 17 for recommended adhesives for various substrates. VELCRO® Brand molded hook tapes and some of our Soft Hardware® Brand extruded/molded fasteners are also available with a pressure sensitive foam backing, one side of which has been applied to the back of the VELCRO® Brand molded tape, the other side of which serves as a pressure sensitive backing.

Solvent or Heat Activated Adhesive Pre-CoatsFactory applied pre-coated adhesive backings, available on most VELCRO® Brand hook & loop tapes, provide the strongest adhesive bond to the tape itself and can be made ready for instant bonding by many easy methods of application (e.g., solvent, heat, ultrasonic, dielectric, etc.) They can also be used as a tie coat for a liquid adhesive.

Types of Adhesive Systems

Preparation of VELCRO® Brand Tapes - Pointed corners on VELCRO® Brand hook or loop tape may prevent a good bond. Nipping or rounding each corner of the VELCRO® Brand tape may eliminate this vulnerable area. Velcro USA, Inc. provides a complete range of converting services. Surface Preparation - It is important that all surfaces be thoroughly cleaned before applying VELCRO® Brand adhesive-backed tape. All cleaning agents should be tested prior to using, to be sure that the cleaning agent will not have adverse effects on the substrate. (Citrus cleaners are not recommended.) In some circumstances, isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) may be a sufficient cleaning agent.

Your Plant Conditions - It is important to work in an area that is clean and free from dirt and dust in the air. The adhesive should be applied at room temperature, with the ideal room

temperatures being 65˚F to 75˚F, and relative humidity 40% to 65%. (The lower the humidity, the better the bond.) Excessive cold, heat, dirt and relative humidity will be detrimental to your adhesive performance. If adhesive must be applied at tempera-tures lower than 65˚F, warm the substrate and the tape to elevate temperature prior to applying. This may help the adhesive cure. (Note: For VELCRO® Brand 72 adhesive, allow full curing time before loading or cycling.) It is also essential to have a well ventilated area to remove fumes and odors for the safety and comfort of your employees, and as required by your local and OSHA standards.

Limitations - VELCRO® Brand adhesives are not recommended for submersion in water or on plastics with high concentrations of plasticizers. Adhesives are not washable or dry cleanable.

Porous SubstrateThis type of surface is one that requires a primer or sealer to provide a suitable bonding area. Allow the treated surface to dry completely before applying your VELCRO® Brand adhesive backed tape. Better adhesion may be obtained when used with a liquid adhesive.

non-porous SubstrateThis would be suitable for a solvent activated VELCRO® Brand pre-coat (40). Better adhesion may be obtained when used with a liquid adhesive.

Smooth SurfacesImproved bonding can be achieved by roughing up a smooth surface.

Weak SubstratePaper is a good example of a weak substrate. If the surface is weak, reinforcing the substrate with additional coverage of a liquid adhesive may improve performance.

Solvent Activated Pre-Coat (40)A non-tacky adhesive pre-coat applied to the back of VELCRO® Brand tapes. This product is recommended for applications where a more permanent bond is desired. This adhesive system is activated by MEK, acetone or MCL. This system can also be used with liquid adhesive or ultrasonically welded when porous substrates exist. Ultimate bond strength is achieved in 24 hours. The service temperature of this adhesive is -40˚ to 250˚F.

Heat Activated Pre-Coat (43) A non-tacky adhesive pre-coat applied to the back of VELCRO® Brand tapes. This product is activated by the use of ultrasonics and dielectrics (RF) machinery or other common heat-generating equipment. This adhesive will bond to a wide range of fabrics and plastics and has excellent water resistance. Ultimate bond strength is achieved in 24 hours. The service temperature of this adhesive is -40˚ to 160˚F.

Bonding Methods1. ULTRASONIC WELDING–Pre-coated tape should be positioned on top of substrate. A perimeter weld at least 1/8” wide should be used to prevent peel delamination. Machine settings including pressure, weld and dwell (hold

The benefit of perforating parts is that the material can be nearly cut through and then wound back up on a roll. When ready they can be dispensed as needed with just a small amount of force to break the pieces apart. Acrylic-based AdhesiveRefer to Adhesive Guide.

Adhesive BondThe force of attraction between two unlike surfaces (similar to a magnetic force). The strength of the bond is determined by the surface’s energy. The higher the energy, the higher the bond.

AnodizedA material such as aluminum, has been subjected to an electrolytic process, where natural oxidation has been controlled. This involves immersing the aluminum in a chemical bath and applying an electrical current to it, causing oxide to be produced from the resulting rust on the aluminum. This layer of oxide hardens the aluminum and makes it resistant to corrosion.

Back-to-BackIs a product comprised of two woven products where hook bonded to hook or hook bonded to loop or loop bonded to loop using a permanent adhesive.

Bulk-PackagedRefers to product packaging (for straps, cut pieces, mated cut pieces, etc.) where the finished items are shipped all together in one master package/box.

Bullet-tipTip or end of a custom fabricated strap that has a rounded appearance.

Clear AluminumRaw aluminum unpainted.

Coated Direct Foam TapeThese foam tapes are manufactured with an acrylic adhesive coating on both sides of the foam tape which gives it more versatility in bonding different substrates. These foam tapes have a high initial tack, and are suitable to bond high, medium and low energy surfaces. The 64-series, which are coated direct foam tapes, are specially designed to bond powder-coated substrates and low energy surfaces (plastics, ceramics, teflon, etc.).

Custom PackagedRefers to product packaging (for straps, cut pieces, mated cut pieces, etc.) where the finished items are custom packaged (individually, in lots, etc.) to meet customer’s specification.

Cut & MatedThis term refers to a product that is cut into individual pieces with both hook and loop engaged/mated.

Cut PieceThis term refers to a product that has been cut to length into individual pieces.

Cycle-LifeThe number of times reclosable fasteners can be engaged and disengaged before the closure strength is reduced to 50% of its original values.

Direct Foam TapeThese foam tapes are 100% acrylic adhesive throughout. They are designed for high performance and high temperature applications and are suitable for high to medium energy surfaces. All clear foam tapes are direct foam tapes.

Double-Face StrapCustom fabricated strap comprised of one loop and two hook sections (all sections face same direction) at either end of the strap.

Double-Reverse/Back StrapCustom fabricated strap comprised of one loop and two hook sections (hook sections face opposite direction to loop section) at either end of the strap.

eZ-Peel TabTip or end of a custom fabricated strap that offers a pull tab for disengaging hook from loop.

Face StrapCustom fabricated strap comprised both of loop and hook sections (both facing same direction).

FastenwriteTM

This is a patent pending technology that offers a wet/dry erase writing surface. It is laminated to a VELCRO® Brand hook that engages into nearly any loop surface for easy labeling, identification and management of bundled materials. It can be die-cut into custom shapes or added to the end of a strap as a labeling tab. The wet/dry erase system makes it easy to quickly change the writing on a label with the wipe of a cloth.

FastenfoamTM

A double sided pressure sensitive foam tape. This tape is available with permanent adhesive on both sides, permanent one side and removable on other as well as removable adhesive on both sides. These high density polyethylene foam tapes offer superior tensile strength and is available in 1/16” or 1/32” thicknesses. FastenfoamTM is perfect for P.O.P. displays, signage and many other applications.

Foot (measurement)A unit of length that is 12 inches and equals approximately of a 0.3048 meter.

GalvanizedIron or steel coated with rust resistant zinc.

GrossA unit of measure used in the textile industry equal to a group of 12 dozen or 144.

Heat Transfer PrintingProcess to place a logo (one, two or four color) on a strap utilizing a label that is bonded with a heat activated adhesive.

High energy SurfacesThese are surfaces that bond well to pressure sensitive adhesives (Examples: Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Tile, Epoxy Paints, Urethane Paints, Enamel, Etc.).

HookThe Hook side is the rough or hard side, it is often referred to as the “male”, “hard” or “rough” side.

Kiss-CutThis term refers to a pressure sensitive product that has been cut to length but remains on carrier/release paper.

LeeD® CreditsA rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC). LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design is an internationally recognized green building certification system.

LoopThe Loop side is the soft or fuzzy side and is often referred to as the “female”, “plush” or “pile” side.

Low energy SurfacesThese are surfaces that do not bond well to pressure sensitive adhesives (Examples: Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Glass, Teflon, Etc.).

Meter (measurement)A unit of length that is a little more than three feet, or about 39.37 inches.

MagnetAn object made from a material that is magnetized and creates its own persistent magnetic field. An everyday example is a refrigerator magnet used to hold notes on a refrigerator door.

Mil-SpecRefers to Military Specification - which are a set of standardized tests and rules (depending on product) that must be met for product to qualify.

Molded vs. WovenMolded materials can be produced in widths up to 12” wide, manufactured in various hook heights (for increased engagement with low profile loops) and from numerous resins (Nylon, Polyester, PVC, Polypropylene and Polyethylene) to vary their performance and/or cost. Woven materials can only be produced from Nylon or Polyester yarns and are typically narrow in width, offer less stretch and have greater cycle-life.

Multiple AcrossDefines when more than one finished coins/parts is placed side-by-side on a release paper.

nylon vs. PolyesterNylon materials are the dominant type used in manufacturing hook & loop. They offer the best cycle-life, color selection and are the best for most applications. Polyester materials are best for outdoor applications. They provide higher moisture and U.V. resistance.

Pad PrintingPrinting process for placing a logo (one color or two) on a strap via ink transfer and a pad.

Painted MetalRaw metal painted with latex or oil based paint.

PeelThe amount of force needed to disengage a hook and loop closure system by peeling the tapes 180 degrees apart.

PerforatedThis term refers to a non-pressure sensitive product that is cut mostly through, allowing the pieces to remain connected.

Powder CoatedA type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a “skin”.

Put-upA term used to define the size of roll (in inches, feet, yards or meters).

RemovableCapable of being removed or taken away. Detachable or demountable.

ReusableAble to be used again; especially after salvaging or special treatment or processing.

Reverse/Back StrapCustom fabricated strap comprised both of loop and hook sections (one facing up and the other facing down.)

Release LinersIs the covering placed on pressure sensitive products to protect the adhesive and stop it from sticking to the product as the material is rolled up. They are available in both mylar (a plastic film) and paper depending on the product chosen.

Rubber-based AdhesiveRefer to Adhesive Guide.

SelvedgeIs an edge of woven material that is cre-ated to minimize fray. It is also an edge on non-adhesive backed Hook or Loop that has no engagable surface.

ShearThe amount of force needed to disengage a hook and loop closure system by pulling the tapes in opposite directions.

Stainless SteelA form of steel containing chromium, resistant to tarnishing & rust.

SubstrateIs the surface/material pressure sensitive adhesives are adhered too (I.E.: Polypropylene, Paper, Etc…).

TackThis is the initial stickiness or bond of an adhesive. It helps hold the adhesive in place while the adhesive cures but has no relationship to the end strength of the adhesive after curing.

Tensile StrengthIs the maximum load a material can support without fracture when being stretched, commonly expressed in units of pounds per square inch (PSI).

TensionThe amount of force required to separate hook and loop tapes in a pulling or lifting motion perpendicular to the tape’s length.

Three-upDefines when three finished coins/parts are placed side-by-side on a release paper.

Two-upDefines when two finished coins/parts are placed side-by-side on a release paper.

ultrasonic Welding vs. SewingUltrasonic welding is a process used in fabricating straps or assemblies that melts like materials together via heat and pressure. Nylon and Polyester materials that are narrow (4” or less) in width are able to be bonded through ultrasonic welding. Sewing is another process utilized when manufacturing straps or assemblies. It is typically stronger than ultrasonic welding and can be used to attach both like and unlike materials.

VeLSTRAP®

Custom fabricated strap comprised mainly of loop with small hook section on one end (facing same direction as loop) and buckle on opposite end - strap can be used for wrapping or cinching.

Volatile organic Compounds (VoCs)VOC refers to organic chemical compounds which have significant vapor pressures and which can affect the environment and human health. Although VOCs include both man-made and naturally occurring chemical compounds, it is the anthropogenic VOCs that are regulated, especially for indoors where concentrations can be highest.

Woven vs. KnittedWoven materials are typically narrow in width, offer less stretch and have greater cycle-life. Knitted materials typically can be produced up to 60” wide, have less stability and more likely to stretch when stressed, less cycle-life and are more cost effective.

Yard (measurement)A unit of length that is equal to 3 feet or 36 inches, and equivalent to 0.9144 of a meter.
