“This is the only grilling cook-book that offers distinct choices basedon the kind of day you are having,”says Purviance. “For example, do youhave time for a full-blown version ofbarbecued ribs, or is today so busy thatyou need a great version that takes halfthe usual time? Now you have the

FUN BY THE NUMBERSLike puzzles? Then you’ll love sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment yousquare off, so sharpen your pencil and put your sudoku savvy to the test!

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS:Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the num-bers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, columnand box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues alreadyprovided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle.

Those who think it is permissibleto tell white lies soon grow color-blind.

Celebrating 110 Years Of The RaceThat Changed Everything

(NAPSA)-There’s more to the old adage “Ifat first you don’t succeed, try, try again” thanmany people realize.

For example, consider the automobile pio-neer Henry Ford. For him, the motto was quiteappropriate, because while on his way to creatingone of the most successful automobile companiesin the world, he suffered his share of setbacks thatincluded the failure of the Detroit AutomobileCompany in January 1901. He was 38 years old,m a r r i e dwith oneson and, after losing$86,000 inthe failedventure, hewas broke. He had tomove inwith hisf a t h e r ,W i l l i a m ,and plan thenext move toward achieving his dream of owninga car company.

“He knew that racing grabbed the publicimagination and it just so happened that one ofthe big_gest races in the country was beingplanned practically in Henry Ford’s backyard,”recalled Edsel B. Ford II. “I don’t think it was mygreat-grandfather’s intention to ever win thisrace. He couldn’t afford to hire anyone, so he hadto drive his own car. He had never raced beforeand he was up against the greatest driver in thecountry.”

That greatest driver, Alexander Winton, proved to be Ford’s lone competition on Oct. 10,1901 as 8,000 fans came to the Detroit DrivingClub to watch. All the other competitors droppedout when their vehicles failed to start, so the mainevent essentially became a 10-lap match racewith the winner receiving $1,000.

Even though Winton jumped to a big earlylead, Ford slowly be_gan to close the gap. As thecars raced past the front stretch grandstand on theeighth lap, Winton’s car began to sputter andFord took the lead for good in front of a cheeringcrowd.

“It was a thrilling moment. It was an historicmoment and a moment that identified Henry Fordas a winner worth watching,” said Edsel Ford.“After he drove into the winner’s circle, a greatcrowd of spectators crowded him and shoutedthat they were willing to back him in any venturethat involved wheels.”

Now, Ford Racing is celebrating thatmomentous day by highlighting great momentsin its storied history at www.fordracing 110.com.

In addition, fans can learn about the ongoingsearch for the trophy Ford won that day-a cut-glass punch bowl that was sold at auction follow-ing his death in 1947. Now, Edsel Ford wants itback. He launched a search 10 years ago butfailed to find it. So for a Ford of today, it’s timeto try, try again.

Back in 1901, Henry Ford discov-ered that an auto race could helphim win a second chance at creat-ing a car company.

“When buying an emerald, the most impor-tant factor is color; the more vivid the green, the more valuable the stone,” says LynnRamsey, president of the JewelryInformation Center, a New York-based tradeassociation.

Don’t be put off by a few fissures, orinclusions, in your stone, advise experts. Itis rare to find an emerald without these nat-ural birthmarks, and they do not detractfrom the stone’s beauty or value as theymight with another type of stone. However, these fissures do affect an emerald’s care. For thousands of years, gem dealers havesought to purify the color of their emeraldsby immersing them in clear oils or paraffin. In addition to these ancient methods, clearresins often are used today to enhance theclarity of emeralds. Using hot water, steam, chemicals, ammonia or an ultrasonic cleanercould remove oils or resins and damage thestone.

Emeralds will remain beautiful anddurable for years if taken care of properly.Do what the experts advise: Avoid abrupttemperature changes and contact with roughor sharp surfaces, including those of othergemstones. Store your emeralds in a fabric-lined jewelry box or wrap them in a softcloth or tissue. To ensure a long and safelife, have your jeweler check the setting atleast once a year and clean the stone at thattime.

Designers of emerald jewelry use awide variety of different cuts. For example, you can choose from the traditional rectan-gular step-cut, known as the “emerald cut,”

Spanish explorers in South Americawere amazed to find magnificent emer-alds in the possession of the Aztecs andIncas.

The source of many of these stoneswas Colombia, where emeralds wereregarded by experts as the ultimate inquality and color. In fact, the world’slargest emerald crystal, at 7,052 carats, was discovered in 1969 in the CrucesMines in Gachala, Colombia. AlthoughColombia remains the world’s largestsupplier of the fascinating green gem, many exceptional emeralds on the mar-ket today come from Zambia,Zimbabwe, Pakistan and Brazil.

Like the aquamarine, emerald ispart of the beryl family, a normally col-orless mineral. Its magic comes fromminute traces of chromium, which givethe emerald its characteristic springgreen color.

How would you like to wear a gem-stone that could protect you from illnessand let you see into the future? Accordingto ancient belief, an emerald could do justthat. Regardless of these legendary attrib-utes, however, few would deny the pleas-ure and delight of owning May’s mesmer-izing green birthstone.

Since approximately 2000 B.C.,emeralds have been prized by connois-seurs and sought after by the rich and pow-erful. They were mined near the Red Seaduring the time of Cleopatra, who woreher emeralds lavishly. Sixteenth century

as well as a variety of rounds, ovals, squares, marquises or round-top cabo-chons. The choice of cut is a personalone and does not affect the stone’s value. While there is no official alternatechoice for May’s birthstone, those seek-ing a different stone could choose onewith an equally vivid shade of green. These include tsavorite garnet, greentourmaline or the lesser-known, butequally beautiful, chrome diopside.

Whether the emerald actually hasthe power to heal maladies or improvevision as some ancient peoples believed, few can resist its universal beauty.Regarded as one of the rarest and mostprecious gemstones in the world, a ver-dant green emerald set into a ring or pen-dant can bring years of pleasure to thelucky owner.
