Biology 12 Heart Dissection Lab Details
*Mar 7th(Fri) for preparation; formal lab on Mar 11
th(Tues)*
Groups of 2-3 Objective: Using photos taken with your cellphones (s), name and label 20 different
parts of the heart
Pre-lab
Pre-lab: as a group, decide ahead of time which parts you will be looking for.Choose some backup parts in case you cannot find some of your original ones
Create a checklist and submit to Mr. Plattner before the lab. Decide the approximate order of parts you which to photograph, as part on the
outside maybe hard to photograph once you get outside of the heart
Lab Instructions: DIY! And have fun
You will be given a heart from an animal You will decide which cuts to make and where Keep in mind: Small cuts are better than big cuts if you are unsure Shallow cuts are better than deep cuts It is already dead. If you make a mistake, no biggie. Let go of the 'formality' of lab
instructions and have fun exploring.
Additional Questions
In addition to submitting any number of photos that, combined, show 20 labelledparts of the heart, do the following:
1) Measure (or take photos that will allow you to compare) the myocardium fromthe left side of the heart and the right side of the heart. Which one is bigger (wider)and by how much? Why?
2) What is the largest width of each of the following: right atria, right ventricle, leftatria, left ventricle?
3) Into how many arteries does the aorta pump blood? Show it with a picture.
