This presentations will answer the

following questions:

• Who are we?

• What are our goals for our students?

• How do help them accomplish these

goals?

– Our Curriculum

– Outside of the Classroom Experiences

• Where do our students go after Ursinus?

• What questions do you have?

At Ursinus College, we do science differently

The Biology

Department

Welcomes

You!

The Biology Department is

• A diverse group whose research

interests range from the smallest

molecules to organisms to populations

Biology Department Curricular Goals

(What we want our students to learn)

• SCIENTIFIC THINKING – The ability to approach problems scientifically, employing

observation, hypothesis, prediction, and experimental design. The ability to read and

evaluate scientific literature with a critical eye.

• TECHNIQUES & TECHNOLOGY – The ability to perform basic techniques in laboratory and

field biology. The ability to use computer hardware, software, and web-based resources to

acquire, process, and store data.

• ORAL & WRITTEN COMMUNICATION – The ability to communicate scientific findings and

ideas in oral, written, and visual formats. The ability to explain complex biological concepts to

scientists and non-scientists.

• BIOLOGICAL LITERACY – Knowledge of the core biological concepts that pertain to all

subfields within the discipline and may be applied to the career path and/or graduate

placement exams.

How do we help our students

accomplish these goals?

One-On-One Advising

with Faculty

Peer Mentoring

(Recitation, FUTURE

program)

Faculty, staff, and students develop

close bonds

How do we help our students accomplish

these goals?

• A wide range of courses

• Our graduates are broadly trained biologists who are well-

prepared for any post-graduate endeavor

We offer a wide range of classes

• Innovation in Biology

• Within the Cell

• Glial Cell Biology

• Human Physiology

• Protein Biogenesis

• Microbiology

• Developmental Biology

• Human Molecular Genetics

• Molecular Biology

• Structural Biology

• Cellular Neurobiology

• Molecular Neurobiology

• Developmental Neurobiology

• Advanced Integrative Physiology

• Immunology

• Virology

• Biochemistry

• Human Anatomy

• Biological Oceanography

• Biology of Neotropics

• Darwin and Evolution

• Insect Biology

• Marine Biology

• Plant Biology

• Freshwater Biology

• Animal Behavior

• Ornithology

• Ecology

• Mammalogy

• Conservation Biology

• Stem Cell Biology

• Biology of Food

How do we help our students accomplish

these goals?

• Small Classes

• Innovative teaching methods

• Collaborative learning

• Flexible curriculum – allows

for double majors

We even have an outdoor classroom in

the IDC

You don’t have to be “just a biologist”

We offer classes in beautiful places (other

than our beautiful campus)

Costa Rica Wetlands Institute,

Stone Harbor, NJ

We encourage

students to Study

Abroad

You can work with faculty on research

projects (even in your first year)

The IDC provides state-of-the-

art research facilities

Our students present at national

meetings and publish with faculty

The Parlee Center encourage students at Ursinus:• to ponder the moral and ethical dimensions of science and medicine,• to pursue careers as ethical and civically-engaged scientists and physicians,• to better communicate science to the general public.

SpeakersFellows of the Parlee Center

FUTURE Program

Fellows of the Center for Science and the Common Good are selected for their potential to become outstanding

civic as well as scientific leaders.
