INTRODUCTION : CONTEXT AND APPROACH
n A View: Senegal is a country whose natural resources are under considerable strain
n Rapid population growth, increasingdemand for natural goods andservices;
n Innefficient carbonizationtechniques;
n Non sustainable forest resourcesmanagement practices;
INTRODUCTION : CONTEXT AND APPROACH
n To minimize further environmental degradation, the senegalese government with the financial support and the committment of the World Bank identified and formulated a project to addressthe critical problem of rapidlydecreasing traditional householdfuel;
INTRODUCTION : CONTEXT AND APPROACH
n Transfer the responsability of forestmanagement and exploitation of forestresources to the rural communities.
n The Sustainable and Participatory Energy Management Project is directed towards: community based sustainable forest management; introduction of efficient carbonization techniques; promotion of improved woodfuel stoves and interfuel substitution.
INTRODUCTION : CONTEXT AND APPROACH
PROGEDE (SPEMP): Pioneer in Poverty Alleviation
n In its sphere of influence, theSPEMP seeks to adapt the people’sneeds to environmental realities.
n The SPEMP is committed to theEconomic Development of Rural population but in way that isenvironmentally sustainable andsocially equitable.
