The PYREG technology follows the idea of the consequent upcycling of biomass. Valuable biochar meeting high quality requirements can be commercialized at profitable prices.

The gentle thermal treatment destroys pathogens, germs and organic contaminants, whereas nutrients remain unaffected.

Furthermore, refinement of biomass represents an active contribution to climate protection. Carbonization of biomass permanently sequesters carbon dioxide. Carbon is removed from the ecological cycle for a long time.

The PYREG process additionally delivers heat of up to 150 kWth for each module – renewable energy, to be used for heating and drying applications.

Biochar can be used in a great variety of applications. Quality criteria to be met in each process are a decisive factor. Carbonization (i.e. the conversion of organic material to biochar) is a method known for centuries – but only the PYREG process enables the parameters to be controlled in a sufficiently targeted way. As a consequence, differ-ent quality levels of biochar can be obtained, and nutrients are recycled in a gentle manner. Efficient, ecological and not accompanied by harmful byproducts: These are the properties you can rely on, so we became a global leader in this sector not without reason.

BIOCHAR FOR SOIL IMPROVEMENT

Thanks to its huge porosity, the internal surface of biochar amounts to more than 300 m²/g. Therefore, this material is able to resorb a quantity of water and solved nutrients, which equals the fivefold of its own weight (refer to Scheub et. al. 2015: Terra Preta).

Without previous treatment however, biochar is not yet able to improve the soil quality, so it first has to be loaded with nutrients and populated with microor-ganisms. “Loading” of the biochar can be performed by different methods, e.g. by composting. 300

If you think that carbonizing is not a meaningful choice in the age of “Decarbonization”, be convinced: Just the opposite is true. In contrast to brown or hard coal, biochar means active climate protection. In the course of the last years, the number of biochar products on the markets does not stop growing. Each year, new manufacturers attempt to sell carbonizates, often only of moderate quality and environmental sustainability. For that reason, it is possible since 2012, to obtain a certification from an independent authority. The European Biochar Certificate (EBC) inspects and certifies the quality of corresponding products as a voluntary industrial standard all over Europe.

The PYREG process is a continuous method and uses the principle of dried carbonization. For that purpose, the bio- mass is not incinerated, but first degassed at a temperature of 500-700°C and then, by admis-sion of a well-defined air stream, carbonized. The material passes through the PYREG reactor, hauled by conveyor screws. As this process enables users to precisely adjust treatment parameters like temper-ature control, carbonization time and admission of primary air, the optimum quality of the final product can be achieved.

Inside the PYREG reactor the process gas from the input biomass is separated from the material and finally burned at a temperature of 1,000°C by the FLOX® burner (flameless oxidation) inside the sepa-rated combustion chamber. Consequently the forma-tion of problematic substances like oils or tar is sup-pressed, because the carbonization gas is not cooled, but purified by complete oxidation in the combustion chamber. The entire process is self-sustaining; the only energy

required to maintain the process, originates from the biomass itself. For that purpose, hot flue gas from the combustion chamber is directed into the outer jacket of the reactor, in order to support drying, degassing and carbonizing of the biomass. It is even possible to benefit from excess heat produced; an amount of up to 600 kWth may be used for drying of humid biomass or for heating.
