Why is science not a stagnant study?

Ch. 1.4 (pp. 19-23)

Learning Target: BiotechnologyI Can...Describe examples of frequently improving technology and infer how their use yields new information to be evaluated.

I Will…• Compare and contrast different types of

microscopes, and medical imaging techniques.

• Discuss the use of computer models to study biological systems.

• Describe ways in which the use of DNA has impacted biological sciences.

Why does science continually need to reevaluate our body of scientific

knowledge?

• New information and new discoveries add to our understanding of life and existing knowledge base.

• This means it can change what we thought we knew!

Imaging technologies • Provide new views of life• A microscope provides an enlarged

image of an object for deeper study.

Imaging technologies • Provide new views of life• X-rays, CAT scans, and MRIs are used in

medicine.

Computed Axial Tomography(CAT Scan)

Complex systems are modeled on computers• Computer models are used to study

systems that cannot be studied directly.• Aides in:• Heart Attacks• Effects of medicines

on the human body• Movement of water

molecules out of a cell• Spread of a disease

through a populationComputer models are used when experiments are not safe, ethical, or practical.

New understandings of DNA allow us to study genetics at the molecular level.• Molecular genetics allows for genetic

engineering.• Genomics compares entire sequences of

DNA within and across species.• DNA testing is used in both medicine and

forensic science.

Learning Check : Biotechnology

• Provide an example of how technology has assisted biologists gain a better understanding of life.

• How might the use of technology inform you about lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, or habits such as smoking?
