Welcome and Introduction

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the University of Manchester and introduce you to our 2012-13 doctoral training programme. The undertaking of a PhD involves a continuous process of learn-ing and it is important that you commit to your personal and professional development in order to enhance your research skills and to strengthen your career prospects when you come to the end of your programme. Each of our Faculty Research Development Teams deliver courses that have been tailored to meet the train-ing and development needs of postgraduate research students at every stage of their degree programme. You should discuss your training needs annually with your supervisory team. Further information can be sort from Faculty training teams. (email [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]) Further information about the online tools that you can use to identify your training needs and track your progression throughout your PhD programme are provided below. We hope that you find all of the courses beneficial during your time at the University and we wish you every success with your research.

eProg is an online research progression tool and skills training catalogue. eProg can be used to record all of your training and development activity and the training courses listed in this brochure can be found and booked through eProg. For more information please visit www.eprog.manchester.ac.uk (you will need your University username and password to gain access) and browse through the training and development index.

All of the transferable skills training provided by the University can be mapped onto the Researcher Develop-ment Framework (RDF). The RDF is a professional development tool, created by Vitae, to help researchers at all stages of their careers to understand the knowledge, attributes and behaviours required to succeed as a professional researcher in Higher Education or beyond. A full outline of the RDF “wheel” is available on page 2 of this brochure. The wheel gives a comprehensive overview of the dour domains outlined in the RDF. The Faculty Researcher Development Teams have linked their courses to each of the four domains listed on the wheel on page 2. To view the courses provided by your Faculty Researcher Development Team please go to the following pages:
