Kindergarten have been developing a number of resources for their play based learning. Thank you to Janet Chakar for the wonderful shop sign. Kindergarten are enjoying making labels and working out the cost of all the items in their shop. Staff Changes- Mr Nguyen has accepted an offer to relieve as an assistant principal at Nicholson Street Public School. The role will commence from the beginning of Term 3 2017 until the end of Term 2 2018 as such, this is his final week at Birchgrove. I would like to congratulate Mr Nguyen on his new leadership role, it is a testament to all the hard work and dedication he has put into developing his leadership skills at Birchgrove. I am very pleased that the teacher replacing him at Birchgrove P.S. will be a teacher that the children have had before and with whom they are very familiar, Ms Greta Sun. Mr Nguyen will be liaising closely with Ms Sun over the holidays and into next term to ensure a smooth transition for the children and continuity of their learning program. Miss Sun is really looking forward to the opportunity of working with the class, as well as getting to know the Birchgrove community, and I know you will join me in warmly welcoming her to the school next term. Stage 3 have arrived safely in Canberra Camp – Canberra & the Snowfields and return to school Friday evening. As well as visiting Parliament House there are a wide variety of experiences including a trip to the snowfields, Questacon, Australian War Memorial, and the Australian Institute of Sport. They will be ready for a long sleep on the weekend! Work starts on the P to 2 Playground tomorrow, areas where the landscapers are

working will be cordoned off. The zone will include a new bike/scooter track with a pedestrian crossing and roundabouts, a new active balance/climbing zone, a boat area with soft fall and stepping stones and a fairy garden outside the classroom as you step down into the preschool, including seating, wooden platforms a fairy door, extra seating, soft fall and beautiful new gardens. It is very exciting and will be a fantastic addition to the children’s leaning and playing zones. Thank you to all the parents who have helped with the P&C fundraisers that have made this possible. The Heroes and Villains Disco on Friday night was a great success. The children looked amazing and had lots of fun on the night! (see pictures below) Their behaviour was exemplary and they did a great job of learning how to purchase glow sticks and lollies by themselves. Our stage 3 students ran the shop smoothly and made sure all the children were helped as needed. It was fabulous to see nearly every teacher there looking after the children and enjoying a dance with them. Thank you Paul for your exceptional barbequing skills, we all enjoyed our sausages. Thank you to the parents for waiting patiently for your grades turn at pick up. The staggered sign out makes sure every child goes safely to a parent and none sneak out into the dark! On Term 3 Staff Development Day

staff will be developing and planning their You Can Do It, student wellbeing lessons with their stage groups. We are also working on our External Validation evidence collection and annotation. It will be a busy day! Have a safe and happy winter break,

Tracy Gray

Learning Snapshot The Year 1 Possums and Numbats have been working together recently to measure, record, compare and estimate lengths using uniform informal units. The focus was the length of

their body and the length of their feet. They had so much fun measuring themselves and one another!

Term 2 Week 10 28th June 2017

Dear BPS Community, It’s been a busy first 6 months of the school year for the kids, parents, teachers and P&C members and I’m sure we are all excited about the end of term and a short break from all things school. Sponsorship & Fundraising We are tracking really well on some strong efforts from our Sponsorship and Fundraising team.

You may have noticed Balmain sports medicine had a marquee up at the Athletics Carnival and were assisting the children with warm up and warm down exercises.

Balmain Sports Medicine and Aussie Home Loans have recently come on board as sponsors – thank you. Ray White have committed to continuing their sponsorship and we look forward to receiving their generous sponsorship by the end of this financial year. We are in the process of compiling an easy to access one pager, which will assist all families as to who are school sponsors and how you can support these businesses and the school. This should be ready early in Term 3 and will come through on SkoolBag, available on the School Website and in the P&C display window at the front of the school. To date this calendar year we have spent $125,000 on school initiatives from heavy hitters like the playground, to readers, teacher support, laptops, speakers, events and one of our exciting new initiatives in conjunction with the school is Lego robotics. We wouldn’t be able to provide any of these initiatives without the support of sponsors, our parents and school community. Thank you. Wish List We have asked the School to put together a Wish List, so we can prioritise the needs and wants, with the intention to be more strategic and targeted with our fundraising and spending. If you would like to suggest any ideas for the Wish List please email through ideally before end of week 1 Term 3, but also at any time throughout the year as the list will continue to grow and expand throughout the year. Grants We found out today that we were successful with the SMC – Westconnex grant ($10,000). This grant is for several new bubblers/water filling stations in the playground. I know the children will benefit from more locations and having bubblers closer to the basketball court where sports are held and bodies are thirsty. Well done and thanks to Carina and Lynn in researching and putting together the grant application. Fete Final wrap up for the Fete is looking like we raised approximate $36,000 after costs, which is great effort by Jen Peters and her team of parents. Thank you. BNO Save the date October 20th - The BNO is fast approaching and is usually a Year 5 run event. We are currently looking for a BNO event team to run the event (not just from year 5), so if anyone is interested please do not hesitate to let me know sooner rather than later. New Community Events The P&C will also be hosting an informal ‘ideas session’ evening early next term, to discuss fundraising ideas including the possibility of a trivia night, ideas for a Birchgrove Signature annual event, school BBQ’s, continuing with the Fete, Christmas Twilight Markets, Band evening etc.

The idea for any initiative is to be a community event and if we have the opportunity to raise some funds at the same time then it’s an added benefit. Frankie and team have done an awesome job to date, but it’s not fair for us to rely on one person to create and execute (even though I’m sure we’d all agree that Frankie is the Queen of brilliant events bringing the community together and we all love what she creates and adore her for all her time and efforts). Please let me know if you’d like to attend so we can invite you once the time and place is set. P&C Association I recently attended a P&C Association seminar on roles and responsibilities at Berala School, which was very informative. I have requested that Birchgrove Public School hosts a P&C Association seminar, so members of the P&C and the school community have the opportunity to attend. We are currently working through dates and it’s looking like an evening in August. It is a public meeting and anyone is welcome to come along and other schools are also invited to attend. POP I’m sure you’ve heard about the POP event on Thursday 27 July, 6pm at Sydney Secondary College, which will showcase the talents of our children and those from other local schools. I wanted to Thank Janet from InPress Printing for the posters that she and her team have designed and printed. Please support Janet if you are in the market for printing, labels, creative or design, In Press offer the total print management solution. www.inpressprinting.com.au If any parents are able to volunteer on the night of POP and assist with serving food and beverages for the performers and families, please let us know. Contact [email protected] Finally, if you have any queries relative to the P&C, please send them through the school website (www.birchgrove-p.schools.nsw.edu.au) via the P&C page or attend our monthly meeting. Thanks everyone, have a happy and safe holiday and enjoy the time with your families. Kim Hall (BPS P&C President) email address: [email protected]
