This season, a new colour joins Birdy’s palette as matt black is introduced to the series. We chose a deeper shade of black that resonates with sophistication and style, colouring the entire shade, base and interconnecting metal parts to create a compelling monochrome lamp. Although strong in appeal, the darker colour adds a neutral version to the series that is easy to integrate into a wider range of interiors.

Birdy in black. Black Beauty.

Design: Birger Dahl

A new monochrome version exclusively in black, adding a strong accent or vivid contrast to the surroundings.

The lights in the Birdy series are hi-fliers, soaring among the best of mid-century lighting designs. Since the original Birdy lamp was first released in 1952, products in the series have won awards, become recognised as lighting classics and been launched as contemporary designs. The series includes table, wall and desk lamps available in grey, off-white and reddish-brown Marsala, complemented by metal parts crafted in polished brass, matt brass or matt steel.

Award-winning designer Birger Dahl (1916 – 1998) was a pioneer of contemporary Scandinavian lighting. Th e mid-century years were a formative period of his work, when he forged his signature streamlined style and launched a new vision of lighting design. Dahl’s career had actually begun the previous decade, when he became head of design at Norwegian electronics fi rm Sønnico and created the award-winning Dokka pendant lamp. Dokka was the fi rst lamp in Norway to receive a Golden Medal award at the prestigious Triennale di Milano, which brought Norwegian lighting under the international spotlight.

While acclaimed for his lighting designs, Dahl is also considered to be one of Norway’s leading Post-war interior architects. Strict geometric shapes, such as circles, cones and cylinders, were the

building blocks of Dahl’s design vocabulary, which he soft ened with gentle contours. He emphasised the purity of form, highlighting the shape of the object rather than hiding it behind decorative details or layers of ornamentation. Sensibilities like these explain why his work still appears modern today, and why lighting designs such as Dahl, Dokka and Birdy are so compatible with the interiors of our time.
