This internationally prizewinning volume now appears in its second, revised and ex-panded edition. Since the first edition was published in 2005, it has been adopted as a textbook at many universities.

The textbook demonstrates an integral ap-proach which combines specialized technical knowledge with the lyrical beauty of the illus-trated buildings, and background information on cultural and historical aspects.

Organized into chapters on “Raw Materi-als/Building Materials,” “Building Compo-nents,” “Building Methods,” and “Buildings (Examples),” the second edition now includes a new section on the use of glass and on pre-fabrication. The chapter on “Building Ele-ments” now includes a discussion of facades, and the chapter on “Structures” has been ex-panded to cover “Principles of Space Crea-tion.” The examples section now includes ex-tensive documentation of current projects whose systematic character is oriented around the production process.

Experience with the preceding edition has shown that the book has become an indispen-sable handbook for reference and reading not only for students and teachers but also for architects.

The first volume of the SCALE series – Open | Close – examines a simple but effective building element, the Opening, illuminating the path from idea to realization in its various fac-ets. The concept of Open | Close includes not only elements such as windows, doors, gates, loggias and skylights, which communicate be-tween exterior and interior space, but also the structure of the building itself. Because Open-ings define and determine the relationship of the building to public space, they also deter-mine the character of the site. The analysis of conception, form and construction of opening elements is supplemented and illustrated by international examples of best applications.

The second volume of the SCALE series, Heat | Cool, illustrates strategies for balanced and appropriate energy-efficient design and looks at energy-efficiency factors as part of the scheme and detailed design of a building.

Using built projects as examples, the au-thors discuss the contribution – based on the respective climatic, topographic, and urban design context – that buildings can make through the choice of materials and design, the extent to which additional services instal-lations are required for heating and cooling, and what combined measures are suitable for sustainable and holistic design. The authors cover currently available technical services for heating, ventilation, and cooling as well as ways in which the choice of materials and con-struction layout can support energy-efficien-cy in the building and optimize the lifecycle and flow of energy. Heat | Cool provides the basis for efficient and optimized conditioning of a building’s interior climate and how this forms part of the architectural design.

The authors and editors teach at the TU Darmstadt and the Hochschule Darmstadt.

In future, buildings that make sense from a bioclimatic perspective will be the norm, not the exception; planners will simply be ex-pected to design them. With its wealth of facts, this book serves as a concrete aid to planning and design. With the planning pro-cess as its roadmap, it accompanies the plan-ner from the basic evaluation stage through conception and implementation planning all the way to building operation. The building- related characteristics of the various climatic zones form the basis for the made-to-meas-ure development of integrated building solu-tions. Well-conceived graphics illustrate planning contexts and facilitate efficient planning decisions and realistic predimen-sioning. Materials, systems, and technologies are described, and their areas of application are pointed out. Reference parameters, costs, and the presentation of interrelationships equip the planner to make a strategic and well-informed selection.

As a critical component in the mix of regen-erative energies, photovoltaics help slow the progress of climate change and furnish the earth with a longterm and affordable supply of energy. They are fascinating, with their abil-ity to produce electricity seemingly from “nothing”, silently, cleanly, and virtually main-tenance-free. As a building-integrated tech-nology, photovoltaics have their ideal point of use precisely where electricity is needed and utilize existing spaces and wiring.

Yet the scale of current applications of photovoltaics still lags far behind their poten-tial, despite the fact that manufacturers al-ready offer a wide range of different technolo-gies and products. The principal culprits are design and constructional problems as well as issues related to planning law and building regulations.

This volume in the DETAIL Practice series is an illustrated guide to the technical, design, and constructional aspects of integrating so-lar plants into buildings. The chapter on build-ing law, a glossary, and additional sources and directories point the way for further study. Im-peccably realized example projects round out the book with demonstrations of the various options for installing photovoltaics on roofs and facades.

In order to understand how to design and build with steel from the perspective of its ar-chitectural applications, hundreds of steel structures have been observed, analyzed and appraised for this book. The resulting account is informed by many years of experience in teaching and providing continuing education. It opens up an innovative approach to the real-ity of working with steel: a new look both at the state of tried-and-tested techniques, and at potentials emerging in advanced projects that transcend national borders and limits im-posed by standards.

Understanding Steel Design treats the clas-sic themes, problems, and solutions of mate-rials and construction methods, supporting structure and shell, elements and connec-tions, fire prevention and sustainability, and so on. Particular attention is paid to the inter-play with other materials such as glass and wood, to requirements for Architecturally Ex-posed Steel Structures, and to innovative sys-tems for load-bearing structures (diagrids). The extensive and detailed reference to real-ized buildings is complemented by a user-friendly graphic presentation: the texts, pho-tographs, drawings, and captions are closely interrelated and all contribute to provide co-herent, in-depth information in each chapter.

The approach of Understanding Steel De-sign is matched by detailed schematic draw-ings produced especially for this volume, re-vealing how these constructions are made and how they function.

Whether it be as translucent sheets, broadly stretched membranes and inflated foil cushions, or in graceful, organic curves, archi-tecture today is utilizing plastics in the most disparate forms and for a wide variety of pur-poses. Innovative technical developments are constantly improving its material properties; at the same time, there is a growing new awareness of its potential as a construction material. While plastics used to be employed primarily as an inexpensive variant on tradi-tional building materials, they are increasingly regarded in the construction world today as a serious and viable alternative, be it as sup-porting structures, roofs, facades, or ele-ments of interior design and decoration. Thanks in large part to this inherent self-suffi-ciency, plastics are currently enjoying an un-precedented surge in popularity, even among the international architectural avant-garde – as multiwall sheets or corrugated, fiber-rein-forced panels, or as filling between glass panes. And the new generation of ecological bioplastics also pays tribute to the debate on sustainability, ridding plastics of their linger-ing reputation as environmental offenders.

From the history of plastics and mem-branes in architecture to their material prop-erties and requirements in construction and design, the Construction Manual for Polymers + Membranes cuts to the chase, providing the kind of solid and comprehensive overview of the subject that readers have come to expect from the Construction Manual series. Select-ed project examples round off the reference work and make it indispensable for the day-to-day life of the professional planner and for every architecture library.

Sports stadiums, airports, theaters, muse-ums – it falls to very few architects to tackle spectacular building tasks like these. The eve-ryday work of most architects is more often focused on “manageable” projects like the renovation, remodeling, or rebuilding of sin-gle- and multi-family houses, schools and of-fices. Whatever the nature of the building task, interior construction is always a signifi-cant design and qualitative challenge that calls for highly detailed technical expertise. After all, it affects the realm that will be brought to life and utilized by the user when the task is finished, and whose aesthetic and functional service-ability will be put to the test each and every day.

The Interiors Construction Manual sup-ports planners in their daily work as a practi-cal planning aid and reference work with the relevant standards, guidelines, reference de-tails and constructional solutions, all illustrat-ed by built example projects. It brings together the crucial facts on all aspects of interior con-struction and presents the key fundamentals of building physics, fire protection, interior construction systems and openings. In addi-tion, it offers concrete tips on integrated plan-ning approaches, energy and sustainability is-sues, materials used in interior construction, hazardous substances and dealing with build-ing services and light planning.

Textile architecture has been captivating humanity for many centuries. In recent years and decades, the emergence of innovative materials has created new opportunities in the fields of architecture, construction, and interiors. Flexible composite materials derive their fascination from the special forms these fabric structures make possible and from their unusual character as soft materials. To-gether with their functional and structural properties, they possess a range of capabili-ties equally suitable for spectacular and eve-ryday building tasks. This book deals with flexible composite materials in three sections: in the first chapter, the material is introduced with its specific properties; the second chap-ter deals with its uses in the areas of architec-ture, façades, solar protection, and interior design, with special attention to finishing techniques and construction principles. The third chapter illustrates the various fields of application with a selection of 24 international built projects.

In the most typical method of building with wood, elements are connected by using wood joints which do not require the assistance of adhesives or metal connectors. By looking at several hundred examples from Japan, China and 18 European countries, this book de-scribes in great detail the history of timber ar-chitecture in terms of its technical, aesthetic and ecological dimensions. This thorough study is a mine of information to specialists and opens up to the craftsman of today what has become an almost forgotten world and provides a fascinating account for the general reader.

“Here is a man who has trekked though the wild Carpathian forests, the Norwegian out-back, the Russian steppes and obscure re-gions of Japan in pursuit of the wood joint. He tells the story with a sense of unfolding dis-covery; for anyone interested in how buildings work this book is a joy to read.” (the architects’ journal)

Traditionally a building material of hot cli-mate zones in Asia and Latin America, bam-boo is now being increasingly discovered by architects of the northern hemisphere as well. It is lightweight, highly elastic and ductile, and in addition possesses qualities especially in demand in an era of limited resources: renew-ability and abundant availability. Architects and engineers have significantly widened the applications of bamboo in recent years and today even wide-span bridges can be built from it. Impressed with its technical and aes-thetic possibilities, European, Japanese, and North American architects have adopted bamboo for a variety of construction tasks, ranging from exclusive private residences to experimental pavilions, and from airy cano-pies to schools or museums. The book pro-vides a detailed manual for bamboo construc-tions and presents a broad selection of built examples, among them the spectacular bam-boo pavilions of the 2010 Shanghai World Ex-position, a multi-storey car park in Leipzig, the Nomadic Museum in Mexico City, and Richard Rogers’s Terminal 4 at Madrid Airport.

For a number of years, modular construc-tion – the use of prefabricated elements in ar-chitecture – has once again become a subject of lively discussion and debate. Long written off as monotonous, today’s building compo-nents are actually highly differentiated and capable of supporting and enhancing the ar-chitect’s creativity. Numerous structures work with prefabricated components; for single-family homes the figure is ninety-eight per-cent, and modular systems are available that meet high aesthetic standards.

This book provides an overview of the vari-ous systems and their possible uses, particu-larly in the areas of housing, office, and indus-trial buildings. It explains the processes and components of modular construction and the behavior of the various materials when this construction approach is used. The authors offer strategies for planning and designing with prefabricated systems so that the archi-tect can use them productively. Numerous drawings explain the principles of modular construction, while built examples forge a link between those principles and the practical building process.

“ Building for everyone” – that is the best defi nition of what lies behind the unwieldy concept of Barrier - Free Design: the complete and total usability of buildings, including for those with disabilities, for the integration of all of society’s members can only succeed when their environment is made accessible to them.

Demographic changes demand new quali-ties of private and public space, qualities that are also required by new legislation. The Detail Practice volume Barrier - Free Design provides all planners and architects, but also interest-ed building sponsors, with basic practical in-formation and a range of possible planning implementations in the domain of barrier free-dom. It shows how corresponding require-ments can be turned into aestheti cally distin-guished architecture. And it demonstrates that taking barrier freedom into account in the early planning stages of a pro ject need not lead to additional costs compared to “classi-cal” construction and design.

In addition to an overview of planning fun-damentals, the book also includes the associ-ated body of rules and regulations as well as examples of how they are embodied in actual pro jects and perspectives on their develop-ment in the larger European context.

These days, a computer is as much a part of every household’s standard equipment as a refrigerator, and yet the explosion of computer technology in the last several decades has transformed the daily life of every member of society far more than even utopians would ever have allowed themselves to dream. No wonder, then, that from design to production, architecture too is becoming more and more subject to digital influences. The range of those influences stretches from the classical computer programs used in design and pre-sentation to media-supported design pro-cesses all the way to computerized production techniques, to say nothing of industrialized bricklayer “robots.” From measurement to planning and production, architecture is the product of a closely coordinated digital pro-cess chain. What influence do digital design and production methods have on contempo-rary architecture? How are these new meth-ods changing architecture and the way it is created? Where does the potential of digital media for architecture lie? What are the areas in which every individual firm can begin to use them? What are the advantages of working electronically? How and at what cost can these methods be integrated into the day-to-day work of the professional architect? This publication offers answers to these and many other questions on all aspects of the digital design and construction process.

The logics of digital processes in architec-ture have begun to structure the way that ar-chitects design, the way that builders build, and the way that industry is reorganizing.

The process of architectural design has become a complex workflow. At the core of the shift toward more expansive forms of digital production within the design and construction industry is the integration of communication through digital networks. The goal is to devel-op a continuous, easily accessible and para-metrically adaptable body of information that coordinates the process from design through a building’s lifecycle.

Organized around the key fields of Design-ing Design, Designing Assembly and Designing Industry, this book is a reference work on digi-tal technologies as key factors in architectural design, fabrication and workflow organization. It presents essays and case studies from some of the leading voices on the topic and will be released in conjunction with a confer-ence at The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) at Colum-bia University.

Scott Marble, a founding partner of Marble Fairbanks, is a faculty member at the GSAPP; he is also the Director of the Avery Digital Fab-rication Lab and Director of the Columbia Building Intelligence Project Integrated Design Studios.

Since architecture is generally conceived and built as stationary and sturdy, kinetic ar-chitecture exerts an special fascination. It can be described as the outcome of integrating movement into the built environment. The form, size, position or state of a building alter in response to the changing requirements of its function, users or environment. Kinetic ar-chitecture comprises completely movable structures, movable components such as roofs or interior walls and alterations to a fa-çade, for instance by integrating PCMs (phase-change materials). This book presents kinetic architecture as the answer to function-al requirements: must the entire building be mobile, must it adapt to changing conditions or must it allow for quick assembly? It docu-ments the various technical options for realiz-ing kinetic structures. The range of applica-tions stretches from a residential building with a completely kinetic façade to sliding apart-ment walls to folding or hydraulically retracta-ble stadium roofs.

This housing construction design manual documents and analyzes some 130 interna-tional residential structures from the last fifty years. From the standardized floor plans of the 1960s to the more individual concepts of the 1980s and the changed requirements and housing types of recent years, example struc-tures by famous and lesser known architects from throughout the world showcase the tre-mendous variety of possible designs. The cat-egorization of projects from a town planning perspective is supplemented by the detailed typological description of the relevant housing types. Every project is presented with its typi-cal floor plans to a scale of 1:200; sections, site plans, and photographs illuminate each building’s structure and situation.

In addition to incorporating some forty new projects, this new edition now contains figure-ground diagrams that highlight the most sa-lient features of the floor plans, making them even easier to compare.

typology+ documents and analyzes rough-ly one hundred international housing struc-tures. It uses diagrammatic drawings to elabo-rate a broad and varied range of residential types and present them systematically. In the process, it examines variants under the cate-gories of access, space (ground plan and open space), and morphology, supplemented by de-tailed typological descriptions and the elabo-ration of the special qualities of each individu-al type. More general essays draw connec-tions between the housing types and twentieth-century reference projects.

All of the projects are newly drawn to uni-form standards; every project is presented with its ground plan drawn to a scale of 1:200. Site maps, sections, elevations, and photo-graphs illuminate the urban setting, the build-ing structure and design, and the spatial and functional qualities of each residential struc-ture. Thus, typology+ not only offers a broad range of sustainable approaches to apartment block construction, but also possibilities for using and transforming them in a practical planning context.

For some time now, school buildings have represented an important field in architec-ture, and there is an enduring interest in the challenges this design task presents.

This publication explains in ten chapters the central parameters for this architectural typology: the role of the school in the com-munity or neighborhood, questions of sustain-ability, flexible spaces for learning, suitable furniture, processes of participation in the de-sign, learning outside of the classroom, land-scape design, the opportunities in and chal-lenges for special schools, schools in the ur-ban fabric, and the role of new pedagogical concepts. Each theme is illuminated from a variety of cultural perspectives and illustrated with numerous realized buildings as model so-lutions for the given aspect. A guest commen-tary by an architect experienced in designing school buildings concludes each chapter.

The design of sacred spaces presents ar-chitects with a particular challenge. In few other design tasks is the need to achieve the right balance between function and atmos-phere of such importance: which ritual re-quirements have to be incorporated, which pragmatic needs have to be met for a service? Which specific concerns and traditions of a particular religion must be considered? Which shapes of plan, what type of volume, and which lighting and acoustic concepts contrib-ute to the sacred atmosphere of a space?

The publication provides a survey of con-ceptual principles of designing sacred build-ings for Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. It ex-plains technical and planning guidelines for this building type. Altogether sixty-nine case studies from Europe, America, and Asia span-ning the last three decades give exemplary answers to this most singular design task.

The requirements confronting our work-places have recently undergone a dramatic transformation. Constantly shifting work-space populations and varying uses of work-space call for flexible spatial structures, and so do new professions and innovative working methods. The planning of workspaces is influ-enced by the digitalization of our storage me-dia as well as by new materials and building technologies. And yet for all the importance of flexibility and technology, the ultimate focus is still on human beings. How, then, can the mul-tilayered concepts of indoor climate, lighting, acoustics, and ergonomics be reconciled with spatial structures that lend themselves to a wide variety of uses?

In keeping with the typological approach of the series, this volume of the series in DETAIL presents the various working environments organized according to use. The focus throughout is on the successful interplay be-tween technical standards, organizational structures, and human needs.

Shelters, kiosks, snack bars, market stalls, bus stops, telephone booths, toilets, adver tis-ing columns, ticket booths, mobile tents or housing units, emergency shelters, tourist information booths – this list of small, auto-nomously functioning buildings could be expanded almost infinitely. Small buildings shape our daily lives; they are found at the nearest street corner; they are present and indispensable, but as architecture they attract our attention only rarely. Yet these small structures occupy a definite place in the infrastructure of the city. Rather than focusing on the large attractions of architec-ture, architects find many potential ways to ensure the quality of everyday design hid-den in these small, sometimes charming necessities.

This volume in the in DETAIL series spans the arc between architecture and product design, since not infrequently small buildings are located precisely in the area of tension be-tween these two professions, and their suc-cessful realization is evident in the details of their construction.

When designing small residences, Japa-nese architects play with the boundaries of space, employ unusual materials, and develop new concepts for living together. The creativity of Japan’s architects is revealed by their build-ings and by their ability to organize even the ti-niest space. The short life of residential build-ings has led to an enormous store of architec-ture ideas, and Small Houses documents the current approaches.

Japanese residential buildings are and have always been a seismograph of current trends in the country’s architecture. The evo-lution this housing type has undergone since the early days of Japanese modernism is therefore the subject of Ulf Meyer’s introduc-tory essay. The project descriptions that fol-low it are dedicated to the specifically Japa-nese approach to certain elements of archi- tecture. The focus of the project description is on the architectural concept, communicated to the reader in numerous illustrations and overview plans. Scattered texts provide more detailed information about the cultural and design background.

is addressed to architects, interior de-signers, students, and interested members of the general public. Although it includes works by such renowned architects as Sou Fujimoto Architects and Atelier Bow-Wow, the primary focus is on buildings by firms that are not yet famous abroad but have already attracted a lot of attention in Japan for their powerful ar-chitectural ideas.

Bolle Tham (b. 1970) und Martin Videgård (b. 1968) founded their architecture firm in Stockholm in 1999. Their House K and Double House (both completed in 2005) received widespread attention; they finally won inter-national recognition with the Kalmar Museum of Art (which opened in 2008). They are among the young architects invited by Herzog & de Meuron to participate in the Ordos 100 pro-ject in China and are currently planning the new School of Architecture on the campus of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm; their Moderna Museet Malmö has just opened its doors. In their designs, Tham and Videgård take as their starting points the Nordic tradition – closeness to nature and economy of means – as well as the concrete parameters of the project on which they are working; the result, however, is buildings with surprising and fascinating forms. Editor Johan Linton is an architect and art historian work-ing in Göteborg; photography: Åke E:son Lind-man; the book was designed by renowned Swedish graphic designer Henrik Nygren.

In larger projects these days, architects are often purely service providers: under the con-trol of those responsible for the project or the general contractors, the architecture is cut and trimmed for reasons of cost – with all the consequences we can increasingly observe in our cities. There is a way out of this dilemma, one that strengthens the position of the archi-tect and at the same time permits higher quality architecture, as is impressively dem-onstrated by the architects Geninasca Dele-fortrie in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. They are their own clients; they identify properties with potential for development and work with the cities in question to develop building plans and concepts. They are also actively involved in financing and finding investors, and hence they are able to realize architecture that is as powerful as it is sensitive to the complex ur-ban situations in which it stands. This mono-graph does not so much focus on the projects as it does on showing, based on the example of Geninasca Delefortrie’s particular ap-proach, the opportunities that architecture and architects have to influence in a positive way project development, the awarding of contracts, and urban planning in general. In-terviews and conversations with the archi-tects establish the basic thematic structure. Each of the projects, including the multipur-pose hall La Maladière in Neuchâtel, is as-signed to a theme.

Renato Salvi (b. 1956) completed his stud-ies at the Eidgenössische Technische Hochs-chule (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) in Zurich and at Sapienza University in Rome, and served as assistant professor under Flora Ruchat and Vincent Mangeat. In 1998, he started his own architectural firm in Delé-mont, the capital of the newly created Swiss canton of Jura. His design for the Transjurane A 16 highway has received international atten-tion and recognition for the uncompromisingly contemporary and at the same time subtle way that its concrete bridges, tunnel entranc-es, and ventilation structures contrast with and accentuate the wild beauty of the Juras-sic landscape. Other chapters of this first-ever monograph on the Swiss Italian architect doc-ument a selection of his remarkable single-family houses, school buildings, and renovations.

Michele Arnaboldi, an architect from Tici-no, who has worked for Luigi Snozzi, among others, founded his own firm in Locarno in 1995. He has made his reputation above all with residential architecture. He did, however, also attract attention when his design in collaboration with Raffaele Cavadini and Albert Speer und Partner won the internatio-nal competition for the design of the Expo 2000 grounds in Hanover. This volume docu-ments thirty - five of Arnaboldi’s projects, pri-marily residences in Switzerland and Italy but also public buildings such as the new cul-tural center in Lugano, the sports center in Tenero, La Carità hospital in Lugano, and the pavilion for the Locarno film festival. Two essays and an interview with Michele Arnaboldi provide deeper insight into his attitude towards design.

A comprehensive overview on the work of renowned London architect Tony Fretton (b. 1945).

After graduating from the reputable Archi-tectural Association in 1982 Fretton opened his own architect’s office. He attracted atten-tion early on with the Lisson Gallery and the “Red House” (London). His spatial creations and their incorporation into the urban context are of subtle mastery. With his designs for the Camden Arts Centre, the Fuglsang Kunstmu-seum in Denmark, London townhouse for the artist Anish Kapoor and the British embassy in Warsaw, Fretton has emerged as one of the most prominent contemporary architects. This monograph provides a long-awaited ref-erence work to his oeuvre.

Since 1999 Tony Fretton has been a visiting professor at the following universities: Techni-cal University Delft, Ecole Polytechnique Fé-dérale Lausanne, Berlage Institute Amster-dam, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Eidgenössische Technische Hochs-chule (ETH) Zurich.

Although Karol Schayer was one of the most important figures of the Modern Move-ment he is little known outside Lebanon. This Complete Works edition by George Arbid pro-vides the possibility to study a lifework of con-siderable importance.

Using a wealth of previously unpublished original documents and illustrations this mon-ograph reconstructs Schayer’s early career in Poland (1927–39), his years as an émigré in Turkey and Palestine (1939–46), and then his very successful and important creative period in architecture and furniture design in Leba-non (1946–70) with his successive partners Fritz Gotthelf, Bahij Makdisi and Wassek Adib. Thus the lifework of this modernist architect becomes understandable for the first time, and is shown to be clearly on a par with analo-gous achievements of the period around the world. This comprehensive and richly illustrat-ed monograph is the result of many years of tireless research by George Arbid, Associate Professor at the American University of Beirut.

The town of Schlins in Vorarlberg has long been a Mecca for all those with an interest in clay construction. On the steep southern slope, the clay builder Martin Rauch worked together with Zurich architect Roger Bolts-hauser to erect his new artist’s residence. From its foundation all the way to its flat roof, it is made entirely of excavated soil from the site on which it is built : the floors and arched ceilings , the plasterwork on ceiling and walls, the washstands, tiles, and stairs – all are made from the single material clay in its vari-ous forms.

The house is a show house as well as the document of a unique collaboration. At the same time, it is a striking example of how, with the structural and design limitations of this « soft » and massive building technique, a spa-tially and tectonically adequate design can be achieved – and how an archaic building tech-nique can be used in a contempo rary manner. With today’s renewed focus on energetic and ecological consequences, clay construction, with its special ecological, organic, and aesthetic qualities, is again becoming a subject of widespread interest. The structure presented in this book has received national and international awards and represents a milestone in the field.

The Olgiati’s family estate is located in the historical town center of Flims. Rudolf Olgiati ( 1910–1995 ) purchased the property, known as “Dado”, in 1930 and throughout his life used it to realize his architectural thoughts and ide-as. Today, Valerio Olgiati is living in his father’s house, and in 2008 he set up his much - ac-claimed architectural firm on the former site of the barn. This publication portrays the life and work of both architects using the example of the house and studio – that is, through the transformations they have undergone at the hands of their residents over a period of near ly eighty years. It shows personal furniture and objects, the individual layout and design of the spaces and hence the penchants and atti-tudes of the two architects. At the same time this unusual portrait doc uments not only the relationship between father and son but also the characters of two generations and their understanding of architecture and aesthetics.

Valerio Olgiati has worked as an architect in Los Angeles, Zurich and, since 2008, in Flims. He has been a visiting professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zu-rich, the AA in London, and at Cornell Univer-sity in Ithaca, New York. Since 2002 he has been professor at the Accademia di ar-chitettura in Mendrisio and since autumn 2009 he has held the Kenzo Tange Chair at Harvard. The unmistakable straight lines and independence of his buildings have brought him international attention.

The Graubünden-based architect Valerio Olgiati has become well-known outside Swit-zerland for such buildings as his school build-ing in Paspels and the Atelier Bardill in Scharans, but not least for his Yellow House and his studio in Flims. In the form of a well-il-lustrated essay, the architect explains how he develops his projects, the parameters that in-fluence his design process, and the intellectu-al context from which he works. In a reduced, clear language this iconographic autobiogra-phy offers a very personal view of the Valerio Olgiati’s activity and of his self-image as an ar-chitect, thus supplementing with a personal statement the earlier publication “Dado”.

Text and images complement each other to create a narrative thread that offers informa-tive insights into the architect’s intellectual and visual imagination and expands our un-derstanding of Olgiati’s oeuvre.

This book presents in structured fashion the different goals of sustainability and the in-ternationally valid parameters for standardi-zation and evaluation.

Furthermore, sixteen outstanding interna-tional residential buildings of all sizes and ty-pologies are presented, showing how the de-sign qualities influence how the building is experienced.

Integrating the entire spectrum of sustain-ability into the process of design and planning is the most important question in architectur-al debates today. The authors survey the vari-ous parameters and then work out practical procedures. This panorama of sustainability provides architects and engineers with inspi-ration and assistance to achieve sustainability goals in their daily work, but it is equally inter-esting to developers and investors who are in-volved in decision making and the building process.

The approach of “Informing Architecture by Materiality” opens the way to an innovative use of materials in the design professions. Taking material qualities and properties such as texture, elasticity, transparency and fluidi-ty as a point of departure, the concept de-scribed and employed here transcends the conventional definitions of building materials. Instead, the focus is on a multitude of material operations, like folding and bending, carving and cutting, weaving and knitting, mirroring and screening.

The featured design strategies and meth-ods address established and “new” materials alike. They are applied both to the scale of the detail and the entire building. The examples comprise prototype structures as well as large building projects.

Nine chapters deal with surfaces and lay-ers, joints and juctions, weaving and texturing, nanoscale transformations, responsiveness, the integration of ephemeral factors like wind and light as well as material collections pro-viding professional resources. Written by renowned experts in this field, the book fea-tures many examples from international contemporary architecture.

The introductory part provides the concep-tual background, while a final chapter de-scribes consequences for pressing issues of today, like sustainability or life cycle assessment.

Most of the buildings that will be needed in Europe in the coming decades have long since been built. The building tasks of the future lie in the skillful reuse and transformation of ex-isting building stock, whether it be the rede-velopment of historic city centers, the building of extensions onto residential structures, the expansion of public buildings, or the redevel-opment of entire factory areas. Building in the existing fabric calls for highly speci fic ap-proaches in planning, construction, and im-plementation. It spans a broad range of build-ing tasks, from working within the guidelines of historic preservation and renovating care-fully and cautiously all the way to the com-plete transformation of what exists. In addi-tion to aesthetic transformation, technical as-pects such as improving energy efficiency and working with contaminated building materials also play an important role.

This book provides a comprehensive over-view of architectonic strategies of “continuing to build”. It presents intelligent ideas and approaches for working with existing building stock and divides them into three categories according to the method selected : addition, transformation, and reuse. Presented in this volume are everyday projects such as the revitalizing of structures from the 1950s to the 1970s – for example, the renovation of Sied-lung Heuried in Zurich by Adrian Streich Architekten – but also more specialized examples such as the open - air library made of elements recycled from the façade of a department store in Magdeburg - Salbke by Karo* Architekten.

Printed Physics looks at those technologi-cal and economical developments with which the physical characteristics of materials can be symbolically programmed, for example in the field of photovoltaics or in electronics more generally. These devices are already be-ing industrially produced by a printing proce-dure. It is no exaggeration to call this a mod-ern printing revolution, although, unlike in Gutenberg’s day, the printed product does not represent anything but instead is itself func-tionally operative.

This book is the first volume of the “Applied Virtuality” book series based on the metalithi-cum conferences organized twice a year by the Laboratory of Applied Virtuality CAAD at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology ETH Zürich, where distinguished personalities from a broad range of architecture-related fields come together to discuss particular technological developments that are econom-ically significant and philosophically interesting.

Architects today must position themselves within an extremely wide-ranging field of qual-ifications. This makes it all the more impor-tant to have a fresh introduction to the field that makes up one of their core competences, the field of design.

This introductory presentation describes and analyzes the theories, strategies, and tools of creative design for the purposes of practical work. With thoughtfulness and ex-pertise, it opens the reader’s eyes to the pro-cesses that underlie design and demonstrates different ways of communicating about com-plex design work.

The first section focuses on the much-dis-cussed relationship between design and re-search, between architecture and the scienc-es. The second section describes basic design approaches, from Vitruvius and Alberti through Erwin Panofsky and Wolfgang Kemp to Otl Aicher and Vilém Flusser. The third and largest section presents the elementary tools of design, from gestures and words through drawings, models, and simulations to critique, all as instruments of creative design in archi-tecture and its related fields.

It offers an insight into the complex rela-tionship between the two professions: from the historical analysis and theoretical exami-nation via an exploration of partial aspects such as the relationship between support structure and space or the graphic reflections by individual actors on the process of design-ing and building. As such, it provides archi-tects and students with the tools for future cooperation.

The book is a guide for students and teach-ers to understand the need for, the role of and the methods and techniques of freehand ana-lytical sketching in architecture. The presen-tation focuses on drawing as an approach to and a phase of architectural design.

The conceptual goal of this approach is to use drawing not as illustration or depiction, but exploration. The first part of the book dis-cusses underlying concepts of freehand sketching in design education and practice as a complement to digital technologies. The main component is a series of chapters that constitute a typology of fundamental issues in architecture and urban design; for instance, issues of “façade” are illustrated with sketch diagrams that show how façades can be ex-plored and sketched through a series of spe-cific questions and step-by-step procedures.

This book is especially timely in an age in which the false conflict between “traditional vs. digital” gives way to multiple design tools, including sketching. It fosters understanding of the essential human ability to investigate the designed and natural world through free-hand drawing.

The author, Eric J. Jenkins has received several teaching awards and design awards. He is Associate Professor at the Catholic Uni-versity of America’s School of Architecture and Planning where he teaches design, theory and analytical sketching. He earned a Masters in Design Studies from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and has previously published To Scale: One Hundred Urban Plans.

The goal of advancing eco cities often re-mains confined to political or technological is-sues. This book establishes a focus on archi-tectural and infrastructural design approach-es to sustainable urban planning.

Starting out from a critical assessment of five prototypical eco cities of recent decades (Vauban/Germany, solarCity/Austria, Valdespartera and Sarriguren/Spain, Bo01/Sweden), the book identifies fields in which architectural and urban designers can use their creative skills and methods to achieve sustainable results on an urban scale. Sus-tainability is undergoing a shift of focus from quantitative measures toward design-orient-ed, interactive interventions. The range of qualitative solutions in ecological design is discussed here in four topical sections on “Materialize”, “Mobilize”, “Simulate” and “Transform”. For example, “Materialize” ex-plores the potential of eco-design beyond the traditional palette of materials to show how spatial boundaries can be re-imagined as gra-dients of conditioned versus unconditioned space, working with climatic conditions rather than material boundaries to help generate new forms of urban architecture.

Thomas Schröpfer is Associate Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design. Contributions by experts in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, engi-neering and design theory, among them Achim Menges of Stuttgart University Institute for Computational Design, Federico Parolotto of Mobility in Chain, Eduardo Rico of Groundlab London, Sheila Kennedy of Massachusetts In-stitute of Technology and Matthias Sauer-bruch of Sauerbruch Hutton, provide in-depth information on the complexity of eco-design in urban environments and emphasize the need for new sensibilities in disciplinary and trans-disciplinary thinking processes.

Norwegian architecture has received a lot of international attention in recent years. This is the first publication that presents a selec-tion of the best of these projects in one  book, demonstrating Norwegian architects’ responses to a variety of different situations, both natural and urban. The natural land-scape is a strong influence in many of these building projects, and elegant and sensitive proposals drawing on a close relationship with nature has been one of the hallmarks of Nor-wegian architecture. But the increasing ur-banization of the country has also required a similar sensitivity in the response to urban sit-uations, as demonstrated by projects like the Oslo Opera by Snøhetta or the recent  urban projects of Sverre Fehn.

The book is based on building presenta-tions from “Arkitektur N, the Norwegian Re-view of Architecture”, but also contains un-published material, such as interviews with some of today’s central practitioners including Snøhetta and the late Sverre Fehn, and  essays discussing some of the main challeng-es of Norwegian architecture today.

The provision of attractive dwellings in  Europe’s population centers has long been  a topic of central concern not only to archi-tects but also to city planners, investors, and municipalities. Redensification and the crea-tion of new residential developments are  always accompanied by the question of sus-tainable approaches. In Alpine areas, such  efforts must contend with topographical and structural framework conditions that raise the bar even higher.

Living in the Alps presents intelligent ideas and approaches from selected residential  developments and construction projects from Europe’s eight Alpine countries; it examines not just dwelling itself but also the integration of various functions. New photo essays produced especially for the volume show how the structures in question are actually used. The publication offers planners, architects, cities, and towns encouragement and ideas for pur-suing approaches to residential development and housing construction.

Convergent Flux illustrates the contempo-rary architectural and urban planning devel-opments in South Korea in the context of the country’s considerable urban density.

In recent years South Korea, which long stood in the shadow of the superpowers Ja-pan and China, has surged in economic terms. That said, industrialization and the population explosion connected with it have created enormous challenges for the country at the in-terface between globalization and cultural identity. Some 10.5 million inhabitants live in the center of the capital Seoul, while the met-ropolitan area includes around 25 million resi-dents making it the second largest conurba-tion in the world after Tokyo. The result is high urban density, which spells an enormous de-mand for the more efficient use of space and encourages verticalization in architecture.

This publication outlines the current devel-opments in South Korean architecture, urban development and landscape architecture by examining 32 projects in detail. An indepth view of contemporary South Korean architec-ture is given by five essays that address topics such as the fusion of tradition and the mod-ern, the redefining of socalled “social spac-es” and the country’s special topographical situation.

The authors are both architects, trained at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Latin America has been an important place for architecture for many decades. Masters like Barragán, Dieste, Lina Bo Bardi, and Nie-meyer pointed the way for architectural design all over the world, and they continue to do so today. Their approach to colors, materials, and walls had a deep and lasting influence on ar-chitectural modernism.

Since then, however – and especially in the last fifteen years – architecture on the conti-nent has continued to evolve, and a lively and extremely creative architecture scene has de-veloped. The work of Latin American archi-tects and city planners is often guided by so-cial issues, for example, the approach to infor-mal settlements on the outskirts of big cities, the scarcity of housing and public space, the availability of affordable transportation, and the important role of cultural infrastructure – such as schools, libraries, and sports facilities – as a catalyst for neighborhoods. Within this context, the book considers numerous pro-jects that have prompted discussion and pro-vided fresh impetus all across Latin America.

Outstanding projects like the Santo Domin-go Library in Medellin, Colombia, by Giancarlo Mazzanti; Alberto Kalach’s Liceo FrancoMex-icano in Mexico; and the works of Alejandro Aravena in Chile show that recent Latin Ameri-can architecture is more than capable of hold-ing its own beside the works

of the founders.

Whether it is used individually or collec-tively, the simple dwelling house offers an ex-tremely broad field for formal and construc-tional experimentation. In Switzerland, this is manifest in a development reaching from the typical chalet to the widely noted residential structures of the architectural avant-garde of the 1920s and ’30s – from Le Corbusier and Max Ernst Haefeli to Otto Salvisberg. New Vil-las in Switzerland shows that this develop-ment is still being carried on today with great inventiveness by contemporary architects.

The seventeen selected single-family houses are distinguished by their pragmatism, constructional precision, and technical per-fection. With structures by up and coming young firms like e2a eckert eckert as well as villas by established architects like Christian Kerez and Renato Salvi, New Villas in Switzer-land illustrates the diversity of approach that is nonetheless made possible by the variety of natural and urban settings.

This book presents current developments in city planning and architecture in East Asia. It describes the many neighborhoods in which the region’s large cities are modernizing or ex-panding with innovative structures and ad-vanced construction projects. It combines a typology of public structures with an analysis of the compositional principles of urban envi-ronments. Thus, it finally connects new devel-opments in city planning with new develop-ments in architecture, and considers exam-ples such as CCTV, Lujiazui, Kansai Airport, Xinyi, Taipei 101, Chek Lap Kok, Cheong-gyecheon, Roppongi Hills, Da Shanzi, Shahe, Omotesando, and Marina Bay from a new per-spective.And the new perspectives presented here are not just theoretical: some forty full-page bird’s eye views prepared especially for this volume show these future urban settings in highly detailed images of breathtaking beauty. The result is a rich portrait of the com-ing together of global and local influences in non-Western countries.

With its systematic approach, this presen-tation by one of the leading international ex-perts in the field is a reference work on a topic of central importance to the world of con-struction today.

Economic strengthening and the develop-ments associated with it, such as population growth, rural flight, and the explosive growth of cities, pose enormous challenges for city planners in urban centers throughout the world. But clumsy “test-tube” urban plans like those developed for China – in part by German planners – have shown that different stand-ards and rules apply in the non-European world than in Europe’s organically developed urban structures.

This manual analyzes contemporary urban phenomena in economic growth regions using the Ethiopian capital city of Addis Ababa as an example, and presents a catalogue of sustain-able strategies for city planning practice in the Second and Third Worlds. In the process, it provides planners with generally applicable methods and tools that are usable at the de-sign stage and equip them to develop and de-ploy dynamic planning and project manage-ment processes. To this end, it illuminates such topical subjects as the changing agrarian and industrial landscape, the activation of ur-ban wastelands, and the increasing density of urban hubs. In addition, it uses real projects as examples to highlight avenues for practical implementation.

In reading Chinese cities, as this volume attempts to do, the focus is not primarily on well - known cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an but rather on what it is that is essentially Chinese about the Chinese city – the features and hallmarks that all Chinese cities have more or less in common, their spatial grammar, their syntax, in short : their code. It is only by deciphering their commonal-ities that we become able to form a clear pic-ture of the Chinese city’s internal structure and to intel ligently evaluate and organize our diverse impressions. Moreover, decipher-ing the code of the Chinese city enables the author to “read“ cities newly designed by Western architects. He thus also helps the reader to arrive at valuable new insights into China’s booming process of urbanization and urban development.

Palmbout Urban Landscapes, founded in 1990, is now one of the leading urban plan- ning offices in the Netherlands. It exemplifies current practices of urban planning in that country. Its approach is characterized by a constant search for a new relationship be-tween urban planning, architecture and land-scape architecture. In this process of experi-mentation, Palmbout Urban Landscapes has established a profile not only in the field of the relationship between urban planning and architecture but above all in terms of mutual interactions between urban planning, analy-sis and design of landscape and infrastruc-ture. The book documents some sixteen pro-jects organized into six thematic blocks, inclu-ding such extensive projects as Amsterdam Ijburg, a design for an urban extension to Amsterdam with a total area of 450 hectares, 18,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, 30,000 square meters of stores and other facilities, and Maastricht Belvedere, a restructuring of 280 hectares of a former industrial site with 4,000 residences, 100,000 square meters of office space, parking lots and a vehicle bridge.

In recent years and decades, dealing with the architectural legacy of the industrial age has been an increasingly common task for ur-ban planning: industrial buildings and sites, infrastructure, and residential areas that have become vacant lots as a result of structural transformation cannot, if only because of their dimensions, be ignored within the urban space. Innovative reinterpretations of such relics that update existing building fabric in a way that goes beyond critical reconstruction or revitalization, such as the Toni Site in Zurich or the Île de Nantes, can be observed through-out Europe these days.

The publication urbanRESET brings togeth-er succinct examples of this separate catego-ry of urban-planning from throughout Europe. The projects are presented in detail with plans and color illustrations. Interviews with key players and theoretical essays show how local processes of reinterpretation and reactivation can produce sustainable effects.

urbanRESET sheds light on the common foundations of these works and condenses them into methodological inferences for a for-ward-looking urban praxis.

Knox’ in-situ studies present 50 especially significant city districts from the whole of Eu-rope in words and pictures. His field research focuses on typologically outstanding city dis-tricts that have developed a high degree of individuality.

Cities are the symbiosis of diverse districts: the smaller units serve to provide an impor-tant identity function: business centers and amusement districts such as the City and the West End in London, technology and science quarters (Adlershof in Berlin), designer dis-tricts such as the Zona Tortona in Milan and the Fashion District in New York. Two other factors that play a major role are the conver-sion of industrial wastelands and new districts colored by a supranational capitalism or a sustainable or dubious planning – such as the Vauban residential quarter in Freiburg in South Germany or the Lower Ninth District in New Orleans. Paul Knox also always analyzes how and why these districts have turned out the way they are: outlining their visible and also their hidden and often blurred “biogra-phy”. A fascinating journey through space and time!

Constructing Landscape is a systematic in-troduction to technical and constructional open space planning, with all the relevant top-ics, from the most common materials and sur-faces to the construction of open space ele-ments and the use of plants. For landscape architects and architects it is an indispensa-ble guide to correct and professional execu-tion planning as well as to preparing solid and well-thought-out requests for proposal. Con-structing Landscape is divided into two sec-tions, Materials and Surfaces and Building Construction and Building Elements. The first section provides an overview of the various building materials of landscape architecture and their specific characteristics. It also ex-plains the qualities of surfaces and the differ-ent approaches to treating them. The second section begins with an introductory chapter explaining the principles of statics, the con-nections of load-bearing elements, and the various approaches to anchoring building components and supporting structures. The subsequent chapters use drawings and text to present the constructional principles and techniques associated with the various build-ing elements. Each chapter concludes with a collection of sample projects, illustrated with photographs and technical drawings.

The rediscovery of the city that has been evident recently has by no means superseded the human desire for nature. On the contrary, the goal has been finding urban solutions that do justice to these growing needs and do so in ways that meet the requirements for design, ecology, sociology, and economy. This publication addresses the subject of design-ing inner - city spaces. It documents twenty eight recently realized examples in Europe, most of which feature greenery, designed by international landscape architects such as Gustafson Porter, Field Operations, Michel Desvigne, Gross.Max, Latz + Partner, and West 8. The projects, built between 2004 and 2010, range from private urban gardens by way of squares, streets, and promenades to large scale projects such as the revitalization of riverside areas or master plans for the green spaces of entire cities. Urban greenery is an important contribution to ecological urban development. The projects documented offer examples of how this can succeed using the most modern materials and technologies.

With their centuries-long development, the English landscape garden, the formal French garden, as well as Japanese and Chinese gar-dens constitute an unparalleled repository of design solutions familiar throughout the world. They are frequently drawn upon as ref-erence works, but often in a piecemeal and haphazard fashion and from botanical or art-historical vantage points.

That is where the books of this new series come in. They present the various garden types from the perspective of contemporary landscape and garden design. Starting from the formidable beauty of the world’s most dis-tinguished gardens, they point the way toward the essential compositional principles, the plants most commonly utilized and their most characteristic uses, and the possibilities for employing them in contemporary projects, thus providing readers with a rich source of in-spiration for their own designs and creations.

The panorama of The Chinese Garden stretches from the surviving historical gar-dens all the way to such modern examples as the garden at the Bank of China in Hong Kong (designed by I. M. Pei), Ai Weiwei’s Yiwu River-bank Park, the Garden of Flowering Fragrance in the area of Los Angeles, California, and the Garden of Awakening Orchids in Portland, Oregon.

Gardens inside buildings represent a sus-tainable vehicle for a host of ecological and economic advantages. Factors such as im-proving the indoor climate and the workplace situation and hence increasing quality of life are the critical parameters of this very special design task.

This book offers a comprehensive intro-duction to the planning and implementation of this special kind of garden, taking the con-crete planning process as its guide. From design fundamentals and concept develop-ment with different typology variants all the way to the choice of materials, the various construction principles, and building services, all subjects relevant to planning are com-prehensively presented. The planning infor-mation is illustrated with numerous inter-national examples, with projects ranging from a ”green wall” as interior design element and private house gardens in Australia, New Zealand, and Germany all the way to award - winning ecological office buildings in the USA and the Netherlands, an old - age home in Sweden, and an indoor park in Canada.

Urban riverbanks are attractive locations and highly prized recreational environments. The designs of urban river landscapes must fulfill a broad range of requirements: flood control, open space design, and ecology are as a rule the three dominant themes, and they must often be reconciled within a very re-stricted space. The river must be understood as a process: governed by changing water lev-els, shifting seasons, erosion, and sedimenta-tion, the river environment is not a static enti-ty but constantly changing – the design must be flexible and take this into account. This book is the product of a multi-year study that subjected more than fifty Western European projects to a comparative analysis. The result is a systematic catalog of effective strategies and innovative design elements. First, design-ers and planners are given an overview of the broad and varied spectrum of design possibili-ties. The book’s process-oriented approach is especially helpful where the focus is on long-term, sustainable mea-sures. The publication consists of two linked volumes that enable the reader to consult the systematic catalog and the case study section side by side. The easy-to-navigate structure and an extensive glos-sary provide further guidance, while the work’s highly distinctive design makes it visu-ally appealing as well and invites the reader to leaf through and explore it.

Trees are ideal sources of shade; where they cannot be used, their function is taken over by tents, pergolas, and pavilions. In the context of global warming, shade-providing construction is becoming an increasingly im-portant building task. In Part One of this book, specialists in the field present the typical forms of shade-providing construction as well as the design approach associated with each. Part Two presents easily consultable over-views of 140 plants that have proven to be ef-fective givers of shade in temperate, subtropi-cal, and tropical zones. Part Three presents thirty built projects by architects and land-scape architects from five continents. These constructions illustrate a wide variety of func-tions and scales and cover various climatic zones and cultural contexts. All structures are constructionally and systematically analyzed with texts, true-to-scale drawings, and photo-graphs from their foundations to their connec-tions and the shadows they cast.

The new volume in this series on contem-porary landscape architecture is concerned with how life quality can be increased by im-proving our living environment through plan-ning and raising the quality of public space. How green do we want our housing to be? What are the essential criteria of a successful planning of open space in residential architec-ture? Will the changed relationship between city and country contribute to that, perhaps in the form of urban agriculture?

This book is being published on the occa-sion of the German Landscape Architecture Award 2011, the Special Housing Environment Award, and the largest competition for ideas from students and young professionals in landscape architecture and open space plan-ning: the Peter Joseph Lenné Award. With a revised design and reworked structure, the essays and project descriptions in the book reveal the strategies with which the profes-sion is meeting new challenges.

Andrea Palladio is universally regarded as one of the most important architects of the Renaissance. He was the first “profess-ional architect” and was strongly influenced by Greek and Roman architecture, particu- larly by Vitruvius. His treatise “Quattro libri dell’architettura” also earned him worldwide recognition.

Palladio’s villas are UNESCO World Herit-age Sites.

This book documents and analyzes ten of Palladio’s eighteen surviving villas specifically in terms of their relationship with their natural surroundings; their influence on those sur-roundings is investigated as well. The selected villas constitute a representative cross sec-tion of Palladio’s wide-ranging output. The landscape formations of Veneto, where these villas are located, may be divided into three types: plains surrounded by mountains, arid plains, and marshland.

Monika Gora’s oeuvre is based on nearly twenty years of work as a landscape architect and artist based in Malmö, Sweden, which has produced numerous works in Scandinavia and Central Europe, which have been awarded many prizes and been published internation-ally. Moving beyond the seriousness of classi-cal landscape architecture, Gora’s work re-veals a playful approach to the environment and proves that the built landscape need not be a deadly serious matter but rather is there for the senses: for astonishment, brooding, an aha or a laugh, somewhere between intellect and sensibility, beyond the materialism of gar-den and landscape architecture and far from the conceptualism of museum art. This is demonstrated, for example, by her amorphous light objects called “Jimmies”, which provide white or colored light for playgrounds, housing colonies, while also inviting people to sit or climb on them.

Kongjian Yu and his office Turenscape are beyond doubt the foremost landscape archi-tecture firm in China today. The vast scale of China and its apparently boundless growth have enabled Yu to test many ideas that are still largely theories in the Western world. His work, increasingly valued and appreciated in Europe and North America, has attained an extremely high and elegant level in both con-ception and execution. Kongjian Yu is known for his ecological stance, often against the re-sistance of local authorities. His guiding de-sign principles are the appreciation of the or-dinary and a deep embracing of nature, even in its potentially destructive aspects, such as floods. Among his most acclaimed projects are Houtan Park for Shanghai Expo, the Red Ribbon Park in Qinhuangdao, and Shipyard Park in Zhongshan. This book explores Yu’s work in some ten essays by noted authors and extensively documents some 20 selected projects.

City by Landscape documents the work of a landscape architect active in the interface be-tween urban planning, open space planning and architecture.

For many years Rainer Schmidt Land-schaftsarchitekten + Stadtplaner have been among the leading offices in the fields of land-scape and urban planning; the projects are also increasingly being realized international-ly, above all in North Africa, the Middle East and China.

The company’s overriding objective is to find answers to the urban-planning problems of today, and to do so in the awareness that 21st century landscape architecture should be a ‘built’ reflection on how people deal with one another and with nature. The office puts these answers into practice as designs and strikes a successful balance between design, functions and feelings. The intelligent use of natural resources is of prime importance for the work of the office so as to maximize the ecological, economic and social impact of the projects.

In various essays the book addresses the central topics in Schmidt’s work and docu-ments some 40 selected projects including the highlight Business Towers in Munich, the Park City Schwabing, the Congress Center Doha and the Great Mosque of Algiers.

Infrastructure is currently a much dis-cussed notion in the field of landscape archi-tecture. It regards the entire urban and rural space as a network that calls for an integrated planning approach. Natural and man - made infrastruc-tures are viewed as forming a single, overarch-ing whole. The book examines this new and ecologically sustainable approach with essays by well - known experts in the field. It also doc-uments thirteen international examples. The Infrastructure Research Initiative is part of the SWA Group, which was founded in 1957 by Pe-ter Walker and Hideo Sasaki and has since de-veloped into one of the largest and most im-portant landscape planning agencies in the United States. Among the projects of the firm that have captured international attention are the technologically innovative roof domes for Renzo Piano’s California Academy of Science in San Francisco ( 2008 ), which were planted with indigenous flora.

Since it is now clear that in the future many raw materials will only be available to us in limited quantities, scientists have for some time been conducting intensive research into possible alternatives. Sustainability is the or-der of the day and the magic word for a better future in politics and industry. Moreover, envi-ronmental consciousness and a penchant for thinking in terms of material cycles have caught on with consumers : the use of environ-mentally compatible materials and production methods is desired, even taken for granted by the client. Designers and architects thus have a special role and responsibility. For they are the ones who decide what materials will be used on their projects and thus wield enor-mous influence on the sustainability of our product world.

At the same time, we are dealing with a flood of new materials, which calls for special-ized knowledge of their properties, their pos-sible use, and their handling. Material Revolu-tion bridges the gap between research and in-dustry on the one hand and designers and architects on the other by offering a system-atic overview of the currently available sus-tainable materials and providing the reader with all the information he or she needs to as-sess a new material’s suitability and potential for a given project. Along the way, it examines natural and biodegradable materials, while also presenting materials with multifunctional properties and the potential for diminishing energy requirements.

Dealing with color is a complex subject : in-fluenced by standards, fashions and trends, we derive our ideas and concepts from color theories, intuition and personal preferences. The color swatches and systems for describ-ing color common today are based on purely quantitative principles and include well over 1,500 colors. So how do we choose a particu-lar color? More than ten years ago, the color chemist Katrin Trautwein established a com-pany for manufacturing fine paints, starting out from Le Corbusier’s color palette. She now has more than 900 recipes for paint from which she has proposed – based on her work with architects, designers and conservators – a selection of 128 colors that produce pleas-ant results on their own and also combine well. Each color is presented with a sample; their potential uses and significance are also discussed.

Katrin Trautwein has lectured throughout the world on how to approach colors, given seminars, given expert opinions, advised ar-chitects, taught painters and worked as a restorer.

Lace-up shoes with the likeness of Barack Obama, a lighter that shows an airplane about to collide with the Twin Towers, plush slippers shaped like penises: the world of commodities today is marked by stylistic diversity, irony, and trash – there are no limits on so-called bad taste.

Inspired by the exhibitions at the Werk-bund-archiv – Museum der Dinge in Berlin and now at the Gewerbemuseum Winterthur, this book attempts to get to the bottom of the cur-rent fascination with the ugly, the grotesque, the provocative, and the nonfunctional.

Products from the most disparate realms are juxtaposed on facing pages. The result is confrontations that are sometimes surprising, with a fascination all their own. Introductory essays by prominent authors shed additional light on wide-ranging aspects of design, mo-rality, and irony. It is not just tasteless items that are placed under the microscope; useless and politically incorrect ones have their place in this volume as well.

The book is a fundamental reference work for exhibition designers, architects, and mu-seum professionals who want to adequately conceive, design, plan, and produce clearly fo-cused thematic exhibitions.

Each thematic field represents different challenges for an exhibition design. This typol-ogy by Bertron Schwarz Frey elaborates the special features of the various thematic fields – nature, archeology, history, art, and science. Sketches, floor plans, visualizations, and pho-tographs illustrate the approach, whose es-sential structure remains the same while find-ing a different solution for each theme. For students of architecture, interior design, exhi-bition design, scenography, and visual com-munication it is also useful as an introduction to the subject. The book presents current ex-hibitions including the Museum für Naturkunde and the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the Pommersches Landesmuseum in Greif-swald, and the Württembergisches Landes-museum in Stuttgart. Ulrich Schwarz has been professor of design at the Berlin Univer-sity of the Arts since 2000.

Synesthetic design strives to develop prod-ucts that systematically incorporate all five senses.

In future, the current wealth of medical technical insights in psychology, physiology, motor functions and neurology, and the devel-opment of innovative materials with astonish-

ing new properties will open up almost un-limited opportunities for the designer’s crea-tivity. Haverkamp brings together for the first time precisely those aspects of this funda-mental scientific knowledge that are specifi-cally relevant for designers. The result is a clear and well-organized handbook that offers designers of all schools a a solid foundation for their own designs.

Michael Haverkamp has been working on the concept of multi-sensory design for many years; he is an internationally recognized ex-pert on sound design and synesthesia re-search in general.

Italian interior design has been distin-guished for decades by its innovative power and courage, not only on an aesthetic level but also in its use of new materials and combina-tions thereof. Italian designers have shown a greater willingness to absorb influences from art and design, blurring the lines between those disciplines, sometimes provocatively, sometimes subtly – one of the reasons why their trend-setting creations are in demand worldwide for interiors of restaurants and stores, private residences and hotels, offices and museums.

The book presents a selection of the latest designs from 2000 to 2009, realized in Italy and other countries, including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Israel, and Dubai. The architects and designers in-clude established masters as Renzo Piano, Michele De Lucci, and Giorgio Armani but also representatives of the younger generation. Among the volume’s foremost features is the comprehensive project documentation with many technical drawings and detail photographs.

With its many sample images, magazine covers, and model double pages, this book makes it possible to follow along and analyze how to find the appropriate form for editorial themes and how, as a designer, to shape and organize content attractively for readers.

This book places the focus on the editorial design of Mike Meiré. In six different case studies, Meiré reports on how he went about designing the magazines brand eins, kid’s wear, Arch+, and 032c, and what he had to bear in mind when helping to relaunch the Swiss daily newspaper Neue Zürcher Zeitung, which is so rich in tradition. GARAGE the most recent magazine designed by Meiré for Dasha Zhukova, the Moscow gallery owner, is also included. Meiré speaks openly about inspira-tions and about being influenced by current artistic positions, and pop culture. In five additional chapters, Meiré explores the basic building blocks of editorial design: cover de-sign, photography, typography, pictorial lan-guage, graphics, and layout grids.

Gerrit Terstiege is Editor-in-Chief of the magazine form.

Graphic designers love music. This is at-tested not least by the tremendous enthusi-asm that readers of the typography magazine Slanted bring to its TypoLyrics column, in which designers interpret music in entirely new ways with the help of fonts. For this publi-cation of the same name, celebrated graphic designers like Fons Hickmann as well as talented young designers from all over the world have taken song lyrics and used them as the inspiration for innovative font designs. The result is a collection of fascinating visuals – typographic images that present contempo-rary fonts a little bit differently. The extraordi-nary interplay of type design and music brings the fonts to life and practically sets them dancing. In contrast to classical pattern books and font fans, this volume provides a special, more emotional experience of typography and illustrates the great expressive potential of typefaces.

On analogy with the traditional classifica-tion of fonts, the book is organized into eleven chapters, each of which treats a particular font family and song lyrics from a particular musical style, from classical to punk.

Lines are thoughts that can be drawn and are often more precise than words. Only ideas that can be drawn can be translated into a design. 1D, the first dimension , is thus the point of departure for the design process both in training and in professional practice. This publication focuses on the learning and func-tion of drawing. Drawing assignments created for The Basel School of Design are comment-ed on based on a conceptual system in the form of a “ network card”. On the one hand, this shows the quality of the drawings; on the other hand, it provides the vocabulary nec es-sary to communicate about the com plex pro-cess of drawing – with the goal of ever better results. An introductory essay addresses drawing as a process of perception and reali-zation. The book is rounded out by statements from renowned designers, each accompanied by an original drawing, on the significance of drawing to their work.

The importance of the focus on pivotal texts for the design research cannot be over-stated. However, while certain charismatic names come up in the discussion, the commu-nity has thus far lacked a handbook that is straightforward and accessible. Grand and Jonas have now filled this gap. Compiled on the basis of a deep and extensive knowledge of the field, their essays situate and elucidate these exciting texts and aid readers in under-standing them.

The desk is a place of work and of action, but it also serves as a place to exhibit person-al things and preferences. Thus it always characterizes in two ways a material and sym-bolic unity. The desk is not only very informa-tive in itself, but also must always be studied and understood in the context of its cultural, gender-specific, and field-related surround-ings. The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the use of desks. Desks in insur-ance companies, banks, administrative au-thorities, call centers, and design studios in twelve countries on all continents were stud-ied. This publication presents the results in the form of extensive visual material, empiri-cal analyses, and critical essays. The study was carried out by the Köln International School of Design (KISD) in collaboration with universities in Hong Kong; New York; Seoul; Taipei; Curitiba, Brazil; Pune, India; Auckland; Milan; and Fukuoka, Japan.
