About Bisan Toron

“Bisan’s voice is a delight to the ear and heart. Her approach is not traditional. It is an experimental search for the right expression of inner landscape and yearning. Her work comes in the footsteps of giants such as Meredith Monk but her style is more personal

and unpredictable yet rooted in a distant Middle Eastern heritage.”

- Yuval Ron, Yuval Ron Ensemble

Bisan Toron is an internationally acclaimed vocal artist and voice teacher. Born in Syria and raised in Paris and New York, Bisan studied classical voice performance at NYU and holds masters in Ethnomusicology from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies, with further studies in voice and improvisation with the Roy Hart-based company, Pantheatre, in France.

Her music is informed by a multitude of cultures and vocal traditions, which she threads with vocal articulations that arise from the moment.  Bisan has been a recording artist for several film  soundtracks, including  the acclaimed film, ‘NYsferatu’, which she performed live at 2017 Rome Film Festival. Her music and teaching is grounded in the process of re-imagining the voice as a “muscle of the soul,” bridging the chasm between our inner impulses and outer expression. Bisan is currently teaching and performing on stages around the world and makes

her residence in Richmond, VA.

In my opinion Bisan Toron is a miracle worker. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone teach with so much wisdom, clarity, and energy...She does more than teach music. She changes lives.”

- Justin Nielsen Director, Fresco Arts Academy

As an act of presence, vocalization involves the conscious, physical act of managing energy – a co-

creating with Life. The question becomes: How can the body-voice meet the moment in full resonance? From this perspective, the voice is not a thing but rather, a

space that surpasses boundaries and is not beholden to any single texture, color or mode - a vast array of

human sounds so deeply felt and allowed, that even the singer is dissolved into Presence.

Rooted in Western classical vocal technique while motivated by elements of mysticism, Bisan teaches

through a unique lens that re-imagines the traditional approach to the voice. She developed the concept of ‘Voice Creatures,’ a title she gives to the rich, hidden

voices within us, waiting to be heard.
