These include housing, shops, schools, libraries, sports facilities, community clubs and parks – all important in ensuring a liveable, self-sufficient town. The facilities are carefully distributed across each town to ensure good accessibility, supported by an efficient transport network. Most towns also have commercial nodes and other employment centres such as industrial estates and business parks within the town or nearby, to provide job opportunities close to homes. These facilities and employment centres will be developed according to demand. The detailed planning and implementation of plans for each town is a joint effort of many government agencies.

Comprising a stretch of two-storey shophouses on both sides of Upper Thomson Road, Thomson Village is a vibrant area, thriving with an interesting mix of shops and eateries. With the completion of the future Upper Thomson MRT station, more people will be able to visit this identity node and enjoy the wide variety of food establishments in the area.

Bishan and Toa Payoh residents have many recreational options, including MacRitchie Reservoir, Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park and Toa Payoh Town Park, and the popular park connector along Kallang River. To further improve access to parks, most households in both towns have been planned to be within 400m of a park or park connector. Existing facilities will also be enhanced to provide residents with more attractive outdoor spaces to enjoy. For example:

• Toa Payoh Sports and Recreation Centre will be revamped with a possible integration with the town park and library• AnewBidadari Park that will retain the original terrain and greenery where possible, and incorporate a new lake

Housing: New places to live, more amenities for all

Identity: The endearing charm of Thomson Village

Leisure: Enthralling new attractions
