INTRODUCTION This has been a very busy week starting with the visit of 50 Japanese students from the Kyushu High School who enjoyed an English breakfast before sampling a selection of sixth form lessons. Year 11 pupils visited the teaching labs of Public Health England for their Microbiology Open Day organised in collaboration with the Royal College of Pathologists. On Tuesday Miss Torpos organised a Community Languages Information Evening for pupils wishing to take a public examination in their home language and on Wednesday we enjoyed a careers talk from a Quantity Surveyor as well as the regular Tea Dance for our Senior Citizen friends. Thank you to parents for attending Target Setting Day on Thursday. The productive conversations with form tutors will ensure that our pupils are on track this year. FINCHLEY CATHOLIC VS BISHOP

DOUGLASS BASKESTBALL

MATCH

On a cold and crisp autumnal evening at Bishop Douglass, the Year 7s began their first cup fixture against local sporting rivals Finchley Catholic School. The two teams were welcomed onto the court by an emphatic home support. As Ajani Giscombe gained possession from the tip off, Bishop Douglass did not let the occasion startle them, passing and moving around confidently with one early opportunity to put points on the board squandered. Despite dominating play and Ajani playing point guard like Lebron James, it was the Bishop Douglass players who found themselves behind when Finchley Catholic School sniffed out a turnover in possession and took the lead. Again, displaying ardent mental resilience, Bishop Douglass rallied round with a stunning 3 pointer from Tristan Daley, swooshing the ball into the hoop. After more possession and some scrappy play, both teams were fighting to get the win, but again the MVP (Most Valued Player), Tristan Daley, took the initiative with a darting run from the wing to shoot Bishop Douglass into the semi finals. With a semi final place now secured, the Bishop Douglass Basketball team find themselves one game away from a grand final and an opportunity to bring the trophy back home to Bishop Douglass. WORDS OF THE WEEK

SPIRITUALITY MATTAERS "He is God, not of the dead, but of the living" (Luke: 20:38) God teaches us this week about the resurrection. There are many questions that us as Catholics have about the resurrection; When will it be? What will it be like? But the Lord answers these throughout this week's gospel. Jesus teaches us about the Kingdom. A place where there is no death, no pain and no evil. It is a place where we will be in eternity with God. Although our earthly bodies may perish in this life; it is by no means the end. This week we remember those who have died in the face of evil. May they be receiving the gifts that the Lord has promised. May their souls no longer experience the evils of this world.

THIS WEEK’S MATHS CHALLENGE

SOLUTION TO LAST WEEK’S CHALLENGE

KYUSHU HIGH SCHOOL VISIT On Tuesday 8th November, Bishop Douglass School was fortunate enough to host an exchange visit from Kyushu High School in Japan. The morning started with a wonderful welcome and breakfast meeting where 44 Japanese students and 5 members of staff were treated to a full English breakfast. 20 sixth formers sat with them and exchanged questions and answers about both London and Fukuoka. Although our visitors spoke an intermediate level of English, communication was made much easier via google translate! Visitors attended sixth form lessons and were very impressed. Mr Iwamoto, their English teacher commented on the excellent work ethic of our students as well as the warm welcome which was extended throughout the visit. Laura Capitelli 13A commented on how much she enjoyed the visit, “The students were all really friendly and I learnt so much about the Japanese school system and how different it is to ours”. A huge commendation should go out to our sixth

formers who once again were an absolute credit to

the school in how they presented themselves.
